Clue #114 - More Apollo Candy Stuff

It's about time we posted the latest info from Apollo! Head over to apollocandy.com and click the button for "UK Distribution" to discover when and where you can find Apollo Bars in the UK. In addition to this update, Scott Brown (who?) also posted info about Apollo Candy in Entertainment Weekly's Popwatch blog. He's even got a press release from Apollo to go with it!

The website www.whereisalvar.com is active. I am trying to research who registered the site and see if it is owned by a familiar game source.

Anyway, when you go to the link, a user name and password box comes up asking you to login. I have a tried a few but none seem to work.

Has anyone else seen this or know anything about it?

I have been lurking, but decided to make a temp blog page to be able to post here. I just posted this mins before this new thead so I am reposting it. Hope that's allowed :)

I don't know if this matters, but the bar in Chicago is "The Rockit Bar and Grille" and is owned by Billy Dec, a player here in Chicago, but what is interesting is that Jen Scheff, who was the Bachelorette that aired on ABC, was a waitress there. So the bar does have a slight ABC connection.

But I agree that Rockit is a wierd place to do this LOST buisness because most people that go to that bar are more of the "Greys Anatomy" & "Desperate Housewives" crowd. I bet maybe a handful of patrons on any given night would say they watched a few episodes of Lost and didn't like it. lol

Howard, thanks!

Was wondering why it looked like they had two places listed on the same day in NYC and when it would be... there might be another update yet to the site.

ESPN is owned by Disney/ABC, but it does leave me feeling very curious as to what's the overall connection!?!

KoriJane- I'll plan on heading there tomorrow... it's on Park Avenue between 26th & 27th Street.

lhorse-

I've been to ABC studios for other events before (i.e. Nike/Cadillac Esplanade which had vehicles setup like a showroom in the studio, but open to the public as part of a promotion for some golf tournament). If they got another sponsor, will it carry through to everything or is it a coordination like the NYC 1/2 marathon (ABC-TV) or the ESPN event (ABC-related)? I'll be curious to find out!?!

Thrasher- congrats... I was hoping they'd add the other dates back in, so maybe I can snag another bar for a guy I promised.

I'm not saying that my theory is the end-all, be-all of the game. I may modify it based on things that come out in the meantime, but right now it's my best guess. If I am proven wrong, I will be happy to admit it (because my theory is a bit depressing as far as meaning of the Numbers go).

And then that turns out to be just a minor plot point in an unpublished Philip K. Dick novel? ;P

Matt:

Interesting theory, but I think to discount the Equation as fictitious in game-world is going too far. I feel cheated if what's "in the story" is fictional in the story.

Assume for purposes of game-world that there is a "Valenzetti Equation", and it can predict the precise number of years, months, days, etc. until extinction. Since the variables that go into such an equation are numerous and varied, one can assume that the "results" change almost every time the equation is run. For example, new medicines are developed, or new weapons are developed, and the number goes up or down accordingly. So the power in such an equation is really in using it to test hypotheses -- to "push the needle" up or down. Otherwise it is valuable only as a thermometer, to keep track of variances from "normal".

What if, in spite of all that, the Equation keeps showing the same answer? Nothing we do changes the outcome -- everything points to extinction on a date certain (Aug. 4, 2015?). Perhaps TWM believes he has found a way to change the result. His plan is to save the world, not destroy it. Sure there may be some "collateral damage", but that's unavoidable.

Rachel and her goons are threatening the one chance for survival of our species.

IF The Valenzetti Equation can predict the exact date of the "End Of the World", would not the believers in the equation also need a date the equation BEGINS?

(put aside for a moment the notion that the equation is valid even in a work of fiction. Whether it is or isn't does not really matter, only thing that matters is what the proponents of this theory BELIEVE)

I have found a date (possibly the begin date for The Valenzetti Equation), that has so many ties to Lost it can NOT be a coincidence.

I'm not entirely convinced MtP's right about the VE not being real, but I think he's dead-on with most of the other points of his theory. The VE could still be real (in the gameworld, anyway) but have certain variables in it that could change, and TWM could be doing all this running around to keep those variables from changing, so as to preserve the certainty of the equation, which in turn can be used to justify his crazy plan to kill a whole lot of people just to save the human race.

From Wikipedia:

Forbidden Planet is a science fiction, fantasy and horror bookshop in London, England, with a chain of smaller stores across the British Isles, named after the movie Forbidden Planet.

As well as books the store sells comic books, videos, DVDs, games, and a wide variety of movie and television merchandise.
[edit]

History

It began life in 1979 as a small store in Denmark Street. The store's success led to overcrowding, necessitating a move to much larger premises on New Oxford Street. It then added a chain of smaller branches across the UK and Ireland. On 30 September 2003 the London store moved to even bigger premises at the eastern end of Shaftesbury Avenue.

The original chain split into two rival firms, called Forbidden Planet and Forbidden Planet Scotland (Forbidden Planet Scotland later renamed to Forbidden Planet International).
[edit]

Forbidden Planet NYC

There is also a Forbidden Planet bookstore in New York City, on Broadway near Union Square. It has similar interests, selling comics, books, role-playing game paraphenalia, collectibles, and anime/manga. It was started as an expansion of the Forbidden Planet stores in the UK.

I thought of that and came up with this:

Maybe the numbers aren’t the equation themselves, but the answer...

If we want to assume the equation was based on Jan 1st 1962 at 12:00:00 am, then…
+ 42 years, 23 months, 16 days, 15 hours, 8 mins, and 4 secs =

Dec 16th 2005 at 12:08:04am

But you're right! What's the start date?

That's probably the biggest variable of them all. TWM is very certain that he knows some particular figure, and for some reason thinks the savants at the Vik Institute have confirmed it...but he could still be wrong. There's no *certainty* to be had if the beginning variable is an unknown or even approximated value. This is why he gets frustrated and sighs in the video: he *isn't* sure and this could all be a waste, valuable as any other doomsday prophecy (read: mostly worthless).

Does it have something to do with the numbers being a fibinacci sequence?

Also, the factors as to the end of the world may have changed since 1962, so TWM may have a new end of the world date calculated at the Vik?

ok, I've got a feeling no one cares, but I have insane theory #2:

I'm a realistic person, so I understand that not everyone who watches lost is playing the game
also, there are those of us who play the game and don't watch lost(I'll get around to it)

for those not playing who watch, how will they get caught up on everything that has gone on in-game?
I offer three opitions I don't like

a) Everything in-game related to the show will be slowly revealed in season three(making it dull for those of us who played)

b) J.J. or Rachel will explain everything that has happened in-game in a short prolouge to the seasons first episode(people who didn't play will be left more confused than a normal episode would leave them)

c)nothing in game will have any effect on the show

that's all I've got

Anybody notice that when Kate took a bite of the Apollo bar early in season 2 it was like caramel chewy goodness, but the bars on the give away seem to be solid chocolate?

Can anyone confirm this? Or does anyone care?

I have this wierd idea about the Central Park giveaway. I metioned before that TPTB are meaning to isolate us in the park. They want to seperate the real players from the general public who would stumble into a free bar. There's no event slated at The Summerstage or on the great lawn for Thursday, so it's just wierd.

Imagine if TPTB secretly photographed us and posted shots of us conspiraspies getting candy bars as part of the game. Really creepy. A workmate of mine who I keep posted on the game also agrees that they are trying to get us off the beaten path.

Call me paranoid if you want, but just immerse yourself in the game and pretend it's real life for a sec and think about what I am saying. It's as creepy as the game is sometimes.

After all, on this very website, in its "definition of terms" regarding ARG states:

TINAG: This Is Not A Game, an important concept in alternate reality games, this is said to remind people that they should be pretending that the world of the game is real

In this case proceed with caution when going to Central Park to get your candy bar!

Ciao,

I don't remember what it looked like in that episode, but I was rewatching some old episodes last week and I noticed somethign similar.

****Spoiler (very minor)****

In "?" when Locke is trying to re-draw the hatch door map, he is writing on an Apollo bar wrapper. I think I remember the front of the wrapper saying the bar had caramel and nuts in it. Kinda weird that they wouldn't keep up with continuity. Maybe there are just various kinds of Apollo bars? Who knows...

I pointed that out when we first saw the Apollo site, cuz I'd actually just rewatched the early episodes of Season 2. The one in the show looks kind of Milky-Way-like, while the one online looks more Hershey-bar-ish. I doubt they thought back at the beginning of Season 2 that they'd ever be giving them away, and it's probably cheaper to make a bunch of plain chocolate bars than ones with stuff inside...

I find it interesting that the misspelled words may have a meaning:
"patern" angrams to "parent" or "entrap",
apparently it is also a Latin adjective (Latin scholars correct me) meaning "father's", "paternal", "ancestral".
"fullproof" could mean just that: "full proof".
Perhaps we will be shown proof of Rachel's relationship with Alvar Hanso.
On that note I also find it interesting that the soon-to-go-live website (or perhaps it already is live?) is "whereisalvar" rather than "whereishanso" or some such name, using Hanso's first name as normally only a friend or relative would.

Has this been mentioned-found yet? The Apollo Candy bar has the embedded picture of the back of a human skull?

ThinBLue-

Long time, no contact!?! How are you doing?

Are you agreeing with that assumption about the skull? There are so many possibilities with one's imagination going full tilt...

Look at how much that grilled cheese sandwich sold for on Ebay...

Yes, I can see ET if I imagine looking at ET's face...but also imagine a human skull , viewed from the rear off to the side....

Capcom, you have a point I never thought about that. Thanks for pointing it out.

Marcus - thanks for the e-mail info to RSVP to the Park Ave. CC tomorrow night. I sent an e-mail, just in case. I want to agree with you that you shouldn't have to be inside to get an apollo bar - but, as I'm sure you know, there's not a lot of space to stage something outside of that place. I mean, the sidewalks on Park are a little wider than normal - but still a sidewalk. I could be wrong.

Marcus, that was me...I did a quick search and was trying to find an image that ressembled the apollo skull. No "back of head" shots, but still uncanny at the chocolate skull site (the thought of buying and eating one of those is what I meant by "sick")

Chocolate skulls...wow, that's some artwork there. Only the very finest chocolate skulls for your midnight necromancy! Martha's Halloween favors have got nothing on those! :-)
