Clue #117 - WHEREISALVAR.COM & Fragment Code "PFKAB5QXK"

We recieved the following email from rachel@rachelblake.com at 5:32am. All I have to say is, "Let the Apollo Bar fun begin!"

THE TIME HAS ARRIVED. IF YOU HAVEN'T BEEN TO WWW.APOLLOCANDY.COM...GO THERE NOW. FIND THE APOLLO BARS. THEN HEAD TO WWW.WHEREISALVAR.COM. LET'S SHOW THE HANSO FOUNDATION WHAT THEY'RE REALLY UP AGAINST. YOU'VE WAITED A LONG TIME FOR IT...AND, I PROMISE YOU. THE TRUTH IS COMING.
- RACHEL

Thanks to Sarah, Jen, and Your Mother for forwarding us their emails first!

Fragment Code "PFKAB5QXK" was found by our friend Timmy who went down to Illoura Reserve, Balmain in Australia. He followed Ninja's hints and saw a rusty anchor with the glyph and took photos. He then entered the code on hansoexposed.com and got on the leaderboard. The video fragment is of Mittlwerk saying, "We have engineered into the vir..."

Thanks to TimmyC, dazzedelf, and Esther for the emails!

haha i mentioned in one of my paranoid posts about TPTB would take photos of ppl getting candy bars and use it *against* us (in a fictional way of course- well *ahem* hopefuly) and how creepy that would be. Of course I was ignored. *cough*

Well, it turns out to be the opposite but close! We're to put our own pics up of the golden wrappers? This is still creepy.

But wow, it looks like a major new phase has launched!!

I'll def. be going for a bar tonight.

Get your seatbelts on..when ppl wake up to this they are gonna freak lol.

Crazy idea but what if the order that the letters go missing on the top are the next glyph...
example:

whereisalv_?com
where_salvar?com
so the code would be (ri)
That was just an example.
I would try to figure this out myself but I am off to school.
Good luck all you day glyph hunters.

From what I've gathered so far these Apollo Bars are not just being handed out to anybody.

Certainly in the UK distribution, you have to explicitly go to Forbidden Planet and tell them a daily code to get your Apollo Bar, and as it seems the only way of getting the code is from apollocandy.com you need to be a TLE player to know what's going on.

At the very least the chocolate itself has "whereisalvar.com" pressed into it so non-players may well still go to the site.

Also notice on whereisalvar.com Rachel says "when enough people are watching" so I don't think we need to have 100% of all bars registered to players.

As an aside, I have a strong suspicion here that the Apollo Candy Company are going to defect from The Hanso Foundation. Surely with Apollo Candy being part of the Hanso Group and Dr. Hackett putting stuff in Sprite you'd think they were part of THF's plan. But here is Rachel using Apollo Candy as a vessel to get more information out to us...

The subplot thickens

I've got my bar! I picked it up at the London Forbidden Plant. They've got hundreds there so they won't be running out any time soon.

Question: does anyone know what to do with it? I can't get the whereisalvar.com site at work, so I don't know what's happening there, but someone in the last thread mentioned taking a picture of yourself with the bar. I don't want to open it and spoil the picture (I mean, release the nanites!)

8/24/2006 06:45:00 AM
Blogger Grimlock said...

Yeah, first check your bar to see if it's got a golden-colored grid of numbers on the back. If so, make sure that's showing in your picture. Take a picture of yourself with the bar.

Then, go to whereisalvar.com, sign in, enter your location, golden code if any, and picture file to upload. All pics will be resized to 500x376.

Polyglycerol Polyricinoleate (PGPR) is an artificially derived emulsifier that is mainly used to replace some of the cocoa butter in chocolate used in

lower grade candy bars.

PGPR is a yellowish, viscous liquid comprised of polyglycerol esters of polycondensed fatty acids from castor oil.

It is strongly lipophilic, soluble in fats and oils and insoluble in water and ethyl alcohol. In chocolates it is used as a viscosity reducing agent.

Yes, that's right, you heard it here first, folks: this game has gotten ten times as idiotic as it was yesterday. We are now dependent upon the bars either falling into the right hands, or people who know absolute jack about the game getting bars, going to whereisalvar.com, bothering to read the instructions, snapping a photo, and uploading it --that is, if they didn't just eat the whole damn bar and chuck the wrapper first. At least the system in the UK requires a password...here in the US, they're going to wind up in the hands of people who HAVEN'T A CLUE about any of this. Stupid, stupid, stupid. :(

Okay just gotta say one word:

LAME!

Well, right, when have I been able to say just one word.

They really have outdone themselves on this one. It's like fragments only without any puzzle to find the pieces and without any video! Lol. It's rubbish from a game perspective and makes NO SENSE from a story perspective. It's like I was saying in chat last night. They've sat down around a table and gone - "We really managed to make act 3 suck, now we need to think hard as to how we can possibly come up with something that makes less sense and is more boring".

Still at least they are consistant (if this is Act 4, maybe it's just additional lameness for Act 3)
Act 1 > Act 2 > Act 3 > Act 4

Why are we collecting bars that only benefit the Hanso Foundation? How did she manipulate the packaging? Something (in the context of the game) smells fishy? Was Rachel captured? Is this even Rachel writing to us?

Hmmm......

Fenris,

I think the real problem with the game is that early on we were treated to a fascinating story. There was a linear plot, of course puzzles were thrown in to make it challenging, but after comic-con nothing. No plot, No Story, No Compelling characters, just random fragments of Beardy and Mittlewerk.

If they could just get the story back on-line I'd be happy! Without it this game seems pointless!!

I pretty much lurk here all the time and don't comment much mainly because of the great comments and ideas that everyone else has - I don't want to bog the blog down with the same comments everyone else is making. So I read and have fun with it. But now that there is a phase where I can actively participate, I can't actively participate. Oh well. I just have to keep my eyes open for new glyphs, maybe I will find one to get on the leaderboard. I love the game and I love this site. There is only one place to come for TLE information, and that's right here!

Why haven't we heard about Fixer's offer on DJ Dan's webcast to set up a meeting for Rachel and "HIM"? That seemed like the story was continuing to move forward. Instead of meeting with Hanso, Rachel creates her own version of MySpace?

thinbluemime, the episode will be called "The Glass Ballerina," featuring Sun's dream of the future and her 9-year-old daughter.

So now oracles have entered the game. I mentioned Robert Temple's "oracle octaves" a long time ago on alt.tv.lost. They are a series of oracular centers of the ancient world, each spaced one degree of latitude apart from each other. If one draws lines through the oracular centers, it looks like the 8 lines of a musical octave. (I also thought these "steps" were the "stairs" in "Theresa falls up the stairs, Theresa falls down the stairs," because I think Theresa stands for Tiresias, the blind seer.)

So it's interesting that the illustration of a golden oracle bar on WIA depicts a 3x3 grid showing these numbers:

0 8 0
8 0 8
0 8 0

We've talked about the 3x3 formation before, noting that a couple of the glyphs have this form, as well as the "hash" mark, and how it looks like the 9 dots puzzle.

Your mother: This is an educated guess that i'm putting forward. Rachel will meet Fixer after enough oracles have been found on the whereisalvar site. She's probably in contact with people at Apollo. The other 20 glyphs will be released in the next few weeks, as we all wait patiently and diligently by our computers, annoyed at the rate of release. And for the Dallas event, i can't help you because i live in the Northeast.

I have to agree with Fenris - This better have a point, otherwise it is just a ploy to have the Rachel Blake team show their faces on-line.
There are several issues with this plan:

- What the hell does this have to do with Lost and the TLE or even Rachel Blake??? We might find out later and go "OH!!" but without any previous info, this just seems like a lame promotion.

- How does this reward the true faithful player? It does not! Not when anyone can get a bar...even those that don't know or follow the game or even the show. Do they have a plan B when these famous bars don't make it online?

Bottome line, we the fans created this Promotional Monster and now we have to live with it. The Jeep and Lymon connection worked for a bit but quickly became irrelevant. The Jeep one was even worse... finding links inside the car accesories... please!!! At least the Lymon had a strange feel to it. Now it's chocolate bars and tomorrow it will be underwear or something else...
No doubt that this is a step in the wrong direction.

Here is what I think about the about the WhereIsAlvar site:

I think Rachel is afraid for her life, and the WIA site will show the Hanso Foundation that there are thousands of people all around the world that support her. It's sort of like on online protest. Once enough people "show thier support", the Hanso Foundation will be powerless to "take out" Rachel Blake because of all the publicity, and will need to stop their shenanigans.

Passafist said... Actually that's not me. They are broadcasting live today from Nasville, and so I trapped back in Jersey. Since their talking with an artist (in this case matthew west) I probably won't be on til monday, cause we're off today. It's all kind of technical, but I'm David A Dein, the goofy guy, not Johnny Stone the actual host.

I knew that voice didn't sound right - too old for your pic. I'll try to listen on Monday :)

Is anyone planning on being at the give away in Indianapolis, IN tomorrow evening? I'll be there and I'm bringing friends to help me get as many bars as they will let us have. I figure I'll ask around to see if those who get the bars know what they're for and if not, ask them if I can have the wrapper. We figure they'll be some wrappers thrown away so we're going to watch for that, got rubber gloves and plastic bags to pick up the throw aways.

If any one else is going we can all work together.
