Clue #95 - Apollo Candy & Podcast Contributions

The ApolloCandy.com website is finally live. Check it out and keep an eye out for clues and the name "Alvar Hanso". Thanks to Dazzedelf for being the first to email us about this.

Podcast Contributions
We had what we think is a great idea for our podcast this week. Some people have been frustrated at the pace & planning of Rachel Blake's latest campaign. We want to hear you guys tell Rachel what you would do differently if you were in her shoes. How would you distribute glyphs and codes differently? Would you hide them online or in the real world? How would people find them, share them, and put them together? Where would you go into hiding?

Be CREATIVE and THOROUGH in your thinking and either 1) Email us your ideas today or 2) Set up a Skype account, email us your username, and be available around 5:00p.m. Central Daylight Time (GMT-5:00) today!

I would make mini games that require some logic, some trivia, you win you get a glyph. I think there should be 5 glyphs per week day, giving us about 3 weeks of minigames with puzzles. As for Rachel, well she was careless in a lot of respects, like emailing Dr. Zander at his work email. No wonder she got a virus she was being silly.

Actually Alvar's last appearance was on 12/31/2002...but the date on the now famous pic on THF.org was October 28, 2003. So still no significance to the Oct. 23 date on the candy bar.

As for the podcast, we're only telling Rachel how we think she should have done things not TPTB, right? That's a different set of recommendations in my mind.

Also, is it common in ARG's for the main character to keep a whole community online posted as to his/her actions? I've never read a novel where the hero in danger stopped to even check e-mail let alone post to a website. But I don't know what the rules are for an ARG.

Smokey: I noticed that too but I couldn't read what it did say. And it's probably not important but the info on the site exclaims Bensen's development of a milk chocolate bar. We've been discussing the printing on the bar over in ITE. The going theory is that "WhereisAlvar.com" may be printed on the bar. Currently that domain is being held by a "sitting agency". According to the guy who did the legwork, the company holding "whereisalvar.com" is the same company that was holding "apollocandy.com". Who knows maybe ABC will send us all a free candy bar with a glyph inside the wrapper.

TPTB are smart, they put out an ingame site for a candy bar, with no clues on it, and everybody is talking about that instead of ranting about the missing glyph code we haven't found since it was "released" yesterday. Stupid code is probably in an Apollo bar.

I couldn't get "The Ad" to work... so I was looking through the source code, and I found the URL for the commercial:

http://www.apollocandy.com/ApolloAd01.html

Caution: it is loud, so be careful at work.

Anyway, at the end of the ad, it says "Log on to appollocandy.com to find out how to get your free Apollo Bar"

Anyone see anything like that on the site, I couldn't find anything. But the ad looks like it will appear on TV (it has the "presented by ABC" that the Hanso ads used to have) so maybe we will be able to get a free candy bar after they air it.

I see it, but I don't think it's a face, I think it's shading in the foil, due to the foil layer being uneven over the chocolate letter printing on the candy bar. My opinion.

i posted this earlier...

I wish TLE-clue page would omit what is said in the video fragments when they post the found fragment codes.
Perhaps they could just post a ‘link’ to what is said instead.
The reason is, I would like the opportunity to hear the video fragment for myself before reading what is in it. Its hard for me to look at the code that is found without taking a peek at the what is said about it in the posted clue.

what do you guys think? I emailed them this request... but wanted to post it here in case others wanted to debate the request.

and received this response from TLE guys....
***********
Yeah lostmyid, that makes sense. This is the first request that we've gotten to do what you're asking. I think most people like the way we've been posting...or at least they've become accustomed to it over the last few weeks. If we get several more requests like yours, we'll consider changing it but for now we'll probably keep the format the same just to keep with the pattern we've established.

Sorry we can't help more. If you just want the code, only read the title of the post, write down the code and then close the browser. Maybe that will help.

Thanks for emailing.

so, if you feel the way i do.. send them a note.

It may just be me, but it looks like the writing on the candy bar the woman is eating ends with ".com"

The broken bar writing begins with "wh", appears to be missing a letter or two, followed by an "e" and then whatever is beneath the wrapper.

Lends credence to the whereisalvar.com theory...or is that too long? I suppose the word could just as easily be "whose" as "where"

No sweat. I forgot about them until today too.

At Comic Con they were selling Lost jigsaw puzzles. Tapdawg bought #1 about the Hatch and #2 about the Others. Number 3, The Numbers, was due out in August and #4, Before the Crash, was due out in the fall. This is the only website I've found so far that has them for sale. http://www.tdcgames.com/lostpuzzles.htm

Puzzle #3 still says "Advance Order" even though it was supposed to be released Aug 1st. I thought the word from Comic Con was that #3 would pertain to the ARG.

The site says "EACH PUZZLE IS REVEALING, BUT COLLECT ALL FOUR 1,000 PIECE PUZZLES TO REVEAL THE TRUE SECRETS."

Here's Tapdawg's first post about the puzzles LostOverLost.blogspot.com

The ad is running weird, but I got it... it starts with a small caption, Presented by ABC, Inc., and ends with another caption, Not Sold In Stores.

The date of one of the Alvar pic for the board on the hanso website was October 28, 2003

Most of the ad is a cartoon of a boy & dog in space suits and a spaceship with a voice-0ver telling you to go to apollocandy.com

when you see the cracked open candy bar it looks like it has Wham (part of the 'a' & all of the 'm' being under silver foil)

when you look at the girl about to eat the bar it LOOKS like it "could" just be Whamm

this is all reminscent of little boys imagery pre-space flight era like 1950s & 60s TV, etc...

I have to say the pic on this site of the actual candy itself doesn't look anything like the bar she ate. This one looks like a Hershey bar, but the one on the show was thick and rounded (and a bit mushy looking), like a 3 Musketeers or something.

Someone decided to mention at @ 3:04pm that it linked to THF, but I left it as well as "group" alone because it's just a bunch of umbrella-ed companies... The Foundation is part of The Hanso Group of companies as you can set them up separately to be LLC, charities or private companies, etc.

Anyone have anything to add?

Admin: Good point. That was discussed on the last comments thread but not this one. It seems strange that Hanso would be interested in a chocolate company.

I've heard the Hanso Group phrase used before so I Lostpedia'd it:
here's what I found

One theory mentions that "The Hanso Group is Alvar Hanso's corporate arm, with the Hanso Foundation serving his "philanthropic" purposes." Also the Marine Merchants that TVM visited was part of the Hanso group.

One idea I find interesting (and I am getting DEEP into speculation here) is that it may be a case where the right hand doesn't know what the left is doing. The people who control THF may be different than those that control the rest of the Hanso empire. Which casts a slightly different light on all the talk of secrecy in the frags.

It could be a whole new dimension of intrigue or careless use of the "group" and "Foundation" interchangeably by ARG writers.

Enlarge it, play with the colors, but I'm sticking with my thoughts; although, I have another opinion:
the candy bar the woman is eating is milk and NOT dark chocolate either boys & girls!!

I'm annoyed because when I get my FREE Apollo bar, I want DARK chocolate... you hear me TPTB!!!

Quickie thought - I'm of the view that at a certain point TWM hijacked THF for his own purposes. The group/foundation issue could be a support for that. as in, the Group is what is left of Hanso's original empire, while the foundation is now Mittelwerk's.

I'm drawing a bit of a blank for a contribution for the podcast. Because I would have done the whole ARG differently. At this stage it's not even making a lot of logical sense. If Rachel put the whole video up in every single place she has put up the fragments, what exactly is the Hanso Foundation going to do about it? It'd be impossible to stop. Instead she's running her covert website over what looks likely to be a good few weeks, making it really hard for people to see the video right away, and giving THF plenty of chance to track her down and put a stop to it.

So really, I'm not sure what I can say that would really contribute. Plus they are probably recording by now. *shrug* Next time.

I was waiting to point out that when you look at the picture of the woman about to take a bite of the bar (other than it being milk and not dark chocolate) that there is still more of the bar to the left that she hasn't unwrapped so the word could be LONGER than what we're thinking.

In Oodles "rearranged" broke bar picture here could be room for two more letters and an 'e' before we go back to a covered bar.

you can't really tell anything after the possible 2nd 'e' as it's covered by silver foil; although if there is a "possible" apostrophe then I'm sure it's followed by an 's' ;-)

Sorry, I had to delete and repost because I'm anal about making sense with you guys, but it still looks like an "m" under the foil... as a matter of interest... the candy3.jpg, what is the hole filled with as it looks like a snippet from somewhere else just to complete the bar?

marcus-the foil fill-in comes from placing the put together pieces over the image of the bar BEFORE the foil is unwrapped and the chocolate broken (ie. the second picture in the series of three). The letters are placed over where they would be under the foil.

So what exactly are we expecting from this site? Apollo Bars are not in stores...they are the private purveyor of chocolate to Alvar Hanso and his companies. Does that mean they only make their bars for Hanso? They have been financially intervened upon and "infused with new life" by The Hanso Group. Does this mean Hanso owns them or just has them in their back pocket? Unless apollocandy.com gets it's own Persephone, or unless Alvar himself is using it to get info to us (going on the assumption that he is hiding)...I'm not sure we're going to get much not Pro-Hanso from this site.

I'm comvinced it's wheresalvar.com too - if only I could upload pictures I could show you what I mean.

The beginning is clear from the earlier links as "where" - how can I show you my "woman eating the bar" picture?

email anyone?

ps Has anyone noticed that the broken bar has two positions - one broken end up, one broken end down - one straight from the splash page and one from the "home" link
Why would that be?

And why the two subtly different links from the splash page? an outer and an inner?
Or am I not techy enough?
