Clue #21 - 3rd Official Hanso Press Release

Another HANSO PRESS RELEASE from thehansofoundation.org
Hugh McIntyre gives out his email & phone #! What a great guy!

Oddly, the press release says that the release date is 5/6, but whatever. In summary it explains that there has been a security breach of the website, but that no one's data has been compromised. There is also a secret link at the bottom of the letter than if clicked will sent you to a website. To my knowledge, no one has heard back from trying to contact Mr. McIntyre either by phone or by email.

Phone Number: (206) 861.5017
Email: Hugh.McInTyre@hansofoundation.org
Hidden Link: http://persephone.thehansofoundation.org/

There was a random video on the Hanso site for just a few hours.
HERE we go! Video with SOUND!
or HERE! Pointless hack/hoax?

Nothing happens when I click.

It can't be a hoax, because http://www.thehansofoundation.org/content_tvad.swf also exists. Moreover, the press release is located at http://www.thehansofoundation.org/press/05_05_06.pdf .

Since the site is real, I don't think it's an intentional hoax. However, it may still be a meaningless artifact.

I work in web design and when my group is working on a web page that is planning to incorporate some video, but the video we're going to be using isn't ready yet, we'll sometimes grab another video to use as a placeholder for testing purposes.

It's possible that this hack is accidentally targeting the Bush video instead of the Hanso commercial. I find it hard to believe that the producers would intentionally use a video with a former US President as part of the game as it opens them up to too many real world issues.

5/05/2006 02:09:00 PM
Blogger Charles said...

Continuing from above... The fact that:

1) The URL that led to the Bush page wasn't formally part of the site but was a content loading page that was probably used by the flash developers to build the site and...

2) It looks like that video has now been taken down,

Leads me to believe that it was something that was accidentilly left in the flash, not something that was intended to be part of the site/game.

Charles, do you know what's going on with the "miracle" link on the Press Release page for WWPDP? In the second paragraph, the word "miracle" is connected to what appers to be a JAVA link, but nothing happens when you click it - accidental code or just not completed yet?

Well here are the numbers.

106 98 111 32 117 98 115 32 114 115 110 102 32 102 118 32 102 118 101 71 32 49 32 108 110 90 32 116 117 98 46 83 69 71 32 103 110 32 111 118 32 116 98 73

Now you can run these numbers through a ROT13 translator (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ROT13) to get this.

wob hof efas si sirT 1 yaM gho.FRT ta bi goV

Reversing that you get: Vog ib at TRF.ohg May 1 Tris is safe foh bow

Swap the b with n and the V with L and the h with r and you get:

Log in at THF.org May 1 This is safe for now

Theory: "This is safe for now," remember how the Hanso Foundation letter said that the original website had been breached. Well this website is probally a secret replacement for the Hanso website, only accessable to those who could of cracked the code.

maybe they're just abbreviating their own website?

Also, probably not likely, but since they make note of May 1st, maybe you need to adjust your internal clock to May 1st?

I bet the clue means, as pointed out above, to reset your internal clock on your computer to May 1st. When I do that and go to hanso foundation website, the date on the page changes to May 1st. Don't know if it means to log in at the bottom of the main site or the board of directors, tho.

The ROT13 decoder doesn't decode numbers. So I guess you have to make it manually. That means it's not May 1, but May 14.
Maybe then we'll get news from Persephone.

5/05/2006 04:59:00 PM
Blogger Division said...

With May 2nd being the date of the UK launch for the game, is it possible this message was meant to be read before the launch of the game? It seems to me like it was meant to point people to TheHansoFounation.org before the launch of the game, not sending us there afterwards. Otherwise the next, real, May 1st is 361 days away and long after when the game is supposed to end. Also, the fact that THF.org seems to be the site for an actual organization it seems entirely plausible that this may be another remnant from before the launch of the game. But hey, maybe it does have something to do with adjusting the clock on your computer, seems the best direction to do more digging if you believe this is important...

Lol, please ignore all of my previous post.

It wouldn't make any sense to release the press release on May 5, when you actually have to go to that site four days prior.

I think someone just made the mistake of not decoding the 1 or just didn't realize it that the online-decoder didn't do it and now false information is spreading all over the internet...

5/05/2006 05:15:00 PM
Blogger Ryan said...

In that case, we really can't even be sure it'd be the 14th... my guess is that it's May 1st, since the 14th would be too arbitrary.

Blogger MaJISHaN said...

Oh... ok, I will.
If you ignore my last one. ;-)

5/05/2006 05:16:00 PM

But which date wouldn't appear to be arbitrary? The 10th just because there is a new episode on TV? The 8th just because of the numbers? The 6th because it's sooner than the 14th? I don't know...

Well, I guess we'll just have to wait til the 14th or til another clue pops up. =)

5/05/2006 05:21:00 PM
Blogger Ryan said...

The only other clue I can think of are the letters you have to change out after using the ROC13 code... could there be anything there?

5/05/2006 05:29:00 PM
Blogger MaJISHaN said...

I don't know if there is anything more to it. To change the letters is pretty much common sense to make it legible.

Maybe we are searching too hard for more and more clues.
After all it's still the beginning of the ARG. And therefor converting ASCII code AND ROT13 decoding AND changing letters is enough... I think.

Sounds like the ABC guys got hacked. That is so not cool. Shame on whoever did that

I don't think this press release was refering to one of us hacking the site, but the "Hanso" site being hacked by Persephone. I could always be wrong though.

Or am i just missing your sarcasm?
