Clue #27 - Persephone (4) Whose Running This Place?

If you login and go to Executive Bios and click on "October 28, 2003" underneath the picture of Alvar Hanso, it takes you through a series of links. Here is what Persephone tells us:

Persephone: "Notice the grainy far away picture? It doesn't match anyone else.

Then it takes you to a global map which shows Alvar's last known public appearances in London (14.06.2000), Copenhagen (12.11.2000), Paris (23.02.2001), Geneva (12.07.2001), Rome (18.09.2001), back to Geneva and Copenhagen, then to somewhere off the map, then back to Copehnagen(01.01.2001),. His trip ends in Madrid(31.12.2002) on December 31, 2002

Persephone: "This is the last record I found of any public appearance of Alvar Hanso. The man hasn't been seen in public since 2002!!! Is he hiding? Alvar Hanso was never there. Whose running this place anyway?"

Wait for the green dot... it sounds like morse code.

SAFE G other ideas SAFER, SAFE 9, SAFE M, SAVE ME (See Clue #45)

Is this correct? What does this mean? Also, looking at the dates, does anyone else think they made a mistake with the 01.01.2001 date? Did they mean to do 2002 or is Alvar traveling through time?

Also, read the phone transcript on Clue #7 again (option 2). It sounds like Persephone interrupting asking "What have they done with him?"

Blogger Saeid said...

I think the morse code says "SAFEG" which makes no sense. G and R are similar in morse, so I'm guessing it is saying SAFER. :)

If you notice just before the map jumps from Roma back to Copenhagen, it looks as if he goes up to the north pole and then comes back to Copenhagen, only the dates are out of sequence which seems that maybe when he went to the north pole, he went back in time. hmmmmm...

I saw all of the dates, but they are not in the usual fomat of M/D/Y. I know that there are many countries that do it differently, is Dutch like that at all??

Also, my computer is a certified POS and it takes a sold 3 minutes for the Persephone message (from the Newsletter section to) to load. I noticed that right behind the "Welcome Back" some letters appear and then are quickly covered up.

Has anyone else noticed or been able to get a screen shot, I'm gonna try but it's kinda difficult on my machine.

anyone else think the whole 'where is he' thing, with all the text flying around seemed to link the is and he, to make it look like 'she'? like alvar hanso might be a female? clutching at straws much?

After you click on the map, when the words flash "where is he hiding" "who is running this place", etc. you definitely see the outline of a creepy face, in green...kinda make out a mustache and glasses, in the map ...before it goes to code. That same face shows up only once or twice in Joops live cam...(not talking about the outline of the african american man from the hanso website)...this is a different face, definitely creepy.

Also, "Alvar" isn't bolded anymore. Significance? I have no clue.

Implications of the human genome project

KERRY O'BRIEN: For almost a decade now, a great deal of hope has been invested in the future of genetics in medicine to defeat our worst diseases, particularly since major world powers committed huge huge sums of money to map the entire genetic blueprint known as the human genome.

Now an American company is on the verge of completing that map, which should allow biotechnology companies worldwide to isolate genes that cause disease and devise treatments, if not a cure.

Site.checkIfSeen("chlaw9lu") for the newsletter, so when you don't have an 'older' code, i think (assume) you will not see newer clue's.

I wouldn't read too much into the dates standing for letters, thats just going overboard, and I doubt they will use the same puzzle type twice. It's too easy.

Now they use morse code, maybe next time they use a playfair cypher or something similar, I think it will just keep getting harder and harder

Regarding the posters about the last "letter" in the code, I haven't had a chance to write it down myself yet, but the discrepency could come from the fact that there are two major morse code systems "International" and "American" There are a couple of differences in the two systems which could account for the difference translations

The first Morse Code set that comes up when you do a Google Image Search is wrong: http://www.cwhistory.com/history/TeacherPack/morsecode.html

This does not match International Morse Code or the obsolete American Morse Code - so what is it? Can anyone find a different source for this chart?

All of the other Morse Code charts I have looked at match the Wikipedia chart: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morse_code

American Morse Code: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Morse_code

This is what I got

s ...
a .-
f ..-.
e .
g --.

Rotating the letters doesn't give us much:

safeg gefas
afegs sgefa
fegsa asgef
egsaf fasge
gsafe efasg

Reading the code from right to left doesn't do much either:

welns snlew
elnsw wsnlw
lnswe ewsnl
nswel lewsn
sweln nlews

There may be a way to recombine the code into more or less letters (ala Kryptos):

.. ..-. . -. .- -.

... but I havent found anything yet...

Ok, so using some high tech methods (ie. microphone against speaker) I got a copy of the morse code and slowed it down to like .25 speed.

Just use the standard PC sound recorder if you wanna try. I definetly hear "SAFE G". There is a definet break after "safe" also it is no 9. Unles my alphabet is innacurate there is no way it could be confused for 9 ( - - - - ) G is ( - - .) there's not even enough characters for it to be 9.

The one place that there is some wiggle room is S ( . . . ) When you slow it down there is a slight pause between the first 2 and the last one. (. . / . ) This would translate out to be "IEAFE G". Plug that into an anagram server and you get nothing;

agee if
age fie
age fe i

Anybody else have thoughts on the morse code?? Cause I can't figure it out. Could Safe G be a hint towards another cyper? G is safe, take it out leave it in, I dunno code craking is not my thing but if this spurs on anyone who does know what they're doing let me know!!

I think she's referring to the link we clicked on where it says that the photo was taken in October 2003 as a public relations stint. I think she is trying to say that is not where the picture came from, that there is no public record of him after 2002?

Pistolharris, I think Persephone means that picture is not of Alvar. this is because the picture is dated 2003, and Alvar hasn't been seen since 2002.

Most people are probably trying to figure it out on their own and not relying on a website like this one for what to do next, it says SAFE G, we'll figure out what it means eventually

Thanks for clearing that up for me! Though if it's not him, it's curious that that's the only image we have of him, despite his supposedly numerous public appearances. It's also the footage that Dharma uses in their training video in 'Orientation'. There has to have been a real Alvar Hanso, at least before 2002, so... hmm.

"Is there a significance to the date OCTOBER 28th 2001?

The Electromagnetic Research Initiative has a pic from "Early morning hours of October 28, 2001"

Is there a connection to Hanso's trips? Is this the date of "the accident?

Well, that date coincides with the gap during which he flies north off the top of the screen, for sure.

Given that October 28, 1943, is generally the date of the Philadelphia Experiment (perennial discussion topic when it coems to Lost in general), I would think it's clear they did not make a mistake with the curious date changes in Hanso's trips.

He flew around in 2001, then flew somewhere north during October, then mysteriously re-appears on the map earlier in 2001 then when he left the top of the map.

I'll be the first to admit this is totally grasping straws but did anyone else notice that Peter Thompson turns green as Persephone talks about the date and Hanso when you first click the link.

Green with Envy perhaps, maybe he made a powerplay at Hasno to take control of some project. Though the fact that his picture is stock means he won't be in the show it still could come into play later on, I'm gonna keep an eye on that guys page.

I agree with what was stated earlier, but posted this elsewhere and wanted to share:

Okay, so everyone keeps wondering if the dates are erroneous during Persephone's model... but I think they may actually be accurate. Note how Hanso ends up in Roma at 9/18/01 - the icon BLINKS to make special note of it. Then, the next trip sequence goes back to where he came from, but ends at Copenhagen in 1/1/01... Then, finally, he ends in Madrid in 12/31/02.

Now, please note the Electromagnetic Research Initiative, and note the phenomenon that takes place 10/28/01... right before Honso reaches Copenhagen, he flies off the map, and comes back at 1/1/01. Most of us took this to be a misprint, but the fac that:

A) This magnetic storm occurs sometime during Hanso's trip
B) It ALSO blinks, much like ROMA's date did, implies that it is of importance.

The string between ROMA, COPENHAGEN and MADRID is what's important.

So, that takes us to SAFE G... perhaps this has to do with the electromagnetic research? Not sure, but I think this is probably what we are supposed to asume from the information we're given. So, we just need to find out what that magnetic storm was.

Also, AFE are all points in the chart on the ERI page - perhaps they're vector points?

I have listened to the morse code over and over again for quite awhile.(am I lost obsessed or what;-) I'm one of the first here to say it was SAFE G and I'm sticking with that. The ending is diffently
If there was a slight pause/break between -- and the . it could = me but there is no pause/break between the last 3 beeps. And it diffently isn't 9 according to international code. Here's a morse code site for proof;

Still don't know what SAFE G means though.

Guys, don't be so focused on just the morse code, look at the whole picture - the entire event probably has to do with the electromagnetic storm that occured in 10/28/01 since he flies way up north, which is stereotypically where the "northern lights" are. Maybe safe G stands for same Gamma rays? What types of gamma rays are there?

5/08/2006 07:05:00 PM
Blogger AlextheSuperfly said...

After listening to the morse many times, then recording it and slowing it down, it definitely comes out as ... .- ..-. . --.

Now, depending on which conversion you are using (and I have no idea which is the more valid) you either get safe 9 or safe G. I think it is important to note that there is a gap between the E and the 9/G - it is very pronounced. These are 2 seperate words.

It cannot be Safer, as the 3rd from last beep is far too long to be a pip. (R=.-.)

It also cannot be safe me, as there is no gap between the last two beeps. (me= -- . , not --.)

As for what this means...I haven't the foggiest. Safe 9 seems to make some sense, as it seems to be a location (ie. there are some safes andwe want the 9th one!) Safe G gives me no clue at all, although that doesn't mean that it doesn't mean anything.

PS. If anyone has anywhere to host a sound file, I can send them the slowed-down code if you want (although it is very easy to do yourself)

Now, all I noticed is "devel" and "st"...to me, that's an awful lot like "devil" and "saint" and with the play on good/evil/religion in Lost, and the others, etc...I don't know...I have no idea but thought it was interesting.

It seems like Alvar visited Joop and the Life Extension Program 3 times.

What is interesting is that Alvar visited Copenhagen a first time, for some reason went off the map, and somehow returns to Copenhagen at an earlier date.

So, I'll assume he time traveled at the place somewhere off the map.

But why? I think it has something to do with Joop. Why else would he get there, run off, and come at a previous time? Was it to save Joop's life? Somehow related to the experiment? Did something go wrong with Joop?

But it never played the morse code. Weird.

This might be out of left field but it makes me think that the ascii number that decoded to:

was actually saying that you had to log in using a windows pc.
As in: "WIN HOST PC"
Because that flash animation only worked on internet explorer for pc (perhaps firefox is able to work while safari can not) Can anyone reverse engineer the flash code to see what's up with that?

I agree with Saeid and Adedmat. At this point it's enough to know that the morse code translates to SAFE 9 or SAFE G. Speculation is fine (I mean, that's why we're doing this, right?), but we're going to need some more information before this clue is to make sense.

Personally, I find Persephone's overuse of the word safe to be the most curious aspect of her messages. At first I thought it was in reference to her fear of the sedition/hacking being intercepted by Hanso, but now it seems indicate the next proposed communication. In this context Safe 9 could be an obscure way to inform us that a new message will be delivered tomorrow. Otherwise, we'll just have to wait and see.

Hanso did say they would be producing more ads. My guess is that our next clues will be delivered in a commercial during this week's episode, but I'll still be checking THF.org tomorrow, just in case ;)

To get to the morse code you've just gotta be patient. After the map dissapers and the text is flashing around for a couple of cycles the infamous green dot will show up and the morse code will play on a loop till you click the page.

I think it might be a bit premmature to assume Hanso travelled back in time. All we know is that a hacker revealed what appeared to be an itinerary for Hanso's public appearances and one of these supposed chronological dates preceeded others.

Occam's razor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occom%27s_razor) would dictate that we first explore the possibility that Persephone's dates are not in fact chronolicical, which certainly seems more plausable (at least to me) than time travel.

So far the evidence is simply a series of dates (which are hardly verifiable) that Hanso traveled North on October 28th and that there was an electromagnetic storm on the same date

Assuming the dates are correct and they are chroniclogical, after the trip he apparently arrived before he left. Seems shaky at best.

Is there a possibility that he travelled into the past? Absolutely. In fact, if we assume that Hanso has this ability it might explicate the somewhat obscure methods Hanso is using to extend Joop's (and possibly AH's) life. It also could plausible explain where AH is since he might be in transit to a future date.

Still, it's not the simplest explanation and the assumption doesn't get us much further than we were anyway.

I think the implication is that the PR image on the Hanso executive bio pageis fraudulent. If it is actually Hanso, then the date that the photo is taken is certainly being called into question by persephone.

Like Chip, it looks like I'm hooked as well :D

Speaking of which...are you folks using specific message boards to discuss the different theories? It seems the comments section is becoming a tad cumbersome for discussions :D

need some help with oceanic-airlines.com or oceanic-air.com. How do I get to this seating chart???? I want to see the Walt video and stuff that was mentioned above.

maybe I can redeem myself a bit

go to http://oceanic-airlines.com/seatingchart.htm

click on the "check in" button on the lower right after it's done loading

You should see ETHAN ROM with some boxes. If you spell out "OTHER MAN" it will show you the clip of walt being abucted.

also, while everyone is talking about oceanicarlines.com and getting red dots and gray videos, I have yet to see anything there but a blank screen adn the label "Possibility". I think this site is fake, personally. I am skeptical of ordering the Gary Troop book. Has anyone read "Bad Twin" and if so, is it any good as a book or is it a piece of crap meant for all of us brainwashed losties. Thanks guys, this game is freakin sweet.

thanks, rhettoric, how did you find that URL? I ran a site mapper and it was not listed. Same with the GPC site, how did the Michael site appear??? Are ABC/Disney giving us clues as members of this site!? I am amazed at some of the codes/links that have been broken or discovered. Very impressive work.

Alright, Im sorry to clog this blog....lol. But I was just messign around with that seating chart now that I foudn it. If you put the numbers in (everyone knows the numbers) before clicking 'Check In' you see a very cool video and the site switches to the official "Lost" ABC site. Domain remains the same. Signing off for tonight, good luck all.

any thoughts on why the locations/dates are different.
London flashes in black then disapears
copenhagen stays on in black
paris does not flash and the static is still until it disapears
geneva stays on in black
roma flashes very fast in white
copenhagen flashes slower than roma in white
madrid flashes slow in white...

todd- there are a *lot* of sites out there that people are putting up to look like theyre part of the game, and they arent. be careful where you get your clues from. theres a lot of tuff out there that has nothing to do with the game.

there is a good sitelist here:

note that many of the sites that people are trying to get clues from are confirmed fansites, and not in game.

about official Lost Experience sites...here is a link to a fuselage thread where VIP Gregg Nations said that the only official lost experience sites are hanso and gary troup site. He says there will be more ( I am guessing the widmore one that is registered to ABC???) but for now those first two are it!
Here is the link:

Perhaps I'm just an idealistic newbie to ARGs... but shouldn't some of the fun of the game be in figuring out whether a site is 'in-game' or not based on how events and clues play out? Sure, some may be misled by the fansites that are 'out-of-game', so to speak... But hey, that can make the search more fun. Frustrating to say the least, but at least more intriguing. The straight-laced path of clues is cool and all, but leaves something to be desired. And honestly... why WOULDN'T the good people at ABC throw some curves at us? Is there ANY rule anywhere that says they have to tell us the complete truth about what is 'Official' and what is not?

Just my humble opinion... :)

Anyone who has issues seeing the updated content on the webpage should use the URL "http://thelostexperienceclues.blogspot.com."
The problem is that you have the page cached. Putting a period at the end of ".com" will force a bypass of cache and load a fresh page.

ya know bloody wanker...i agree with you inspite of my post. ;)

it is part of the fun. and I also agree that ABC would not be completely honest(to increase the flow of fun) as well....but GEE! there sure are a lot of sites out there!

yes...all these Oceanic Air sites are making things a bit confusing...This is just MHO but I tend to think that the www.oceanicairlines.com (no hyphen) site is a clue...unless someone other than the Game PTB has put it up here to confuse us even further :o!

Blogger rhettoric said...

that site actually came out last year, it doesn't have anything to do with the game. Still, it's pretty fun.

As for bloody's comment, this is my first ARG as well. I think there will be quite a lot of speculation and confusion even if we KNOW what sites we can "trust" :D

Personally I think it's kinda frustrating trying to figure out if a site is in game. But in reality your using the exact same kinda skills to determine status. Web checking googling names and companies, whether or not we like it determining what sites are in or out of game is the game. Or at least a part of it.

P.S. Todd: You can download the first chapter of Bad Twin on iTunes for free if you wanna give it a try. I liked it, and I've heard (friend of a friend etc.) that the ghost writer was Stephen King.

Can people stop posting the stuff about oceanic-airlines.com, that site has not been updated since season 1 of lost, so it is not a game site.

Just so everyone knows over at the fuselage.com forum it has officially been confirmed that for now only THF and Gary Troup websites are official. The rest are fan made, or at the very least not part of the game yet. These were confirmed by a lost official.

Murpheys Law - Definitely a change.. there is a kind of screeching as well. I remember a few days ago where after a few minutes the music would kind of become this white noise and I would hardly notice it..

There is some deep/low/bassy noise in there too.. it's not a beat. Wow, we should really be paying attention to every little miniscule detail on this site!

can the G in SAFE G possibly stand for Geneva? Geneva is the only city that you do not have to click on to move on, and the only city that stays up with copenhagen when madrid comes up and Persephone starts her message... just a thought

Liddy Wales picture is a question mark, and next Lost Episode is entitled "?" (which will probably be about the hatch in the middle of the island, as in hte map Locke saw).
Could it be another hint will be released in Linda's picture after next Lost episode?

Just a thought, and probably completely unrelated but i've just been going back through the THF site and it occurred to me that the mathematical forecasting institute sounds very similiar to the general theme of the Foundation series of books by Isaac Asimov. They're all about the development of a mathematical equation for predicting the future and the power struggle to secure control of this....

Dude, have you tryed using the word 'miracle' on the newsletter page? As the password? Persephone tells to call center in the tv ad section. Have you try that?

There is something about a project in Copenhagen and a project that started in some country in Africa, but they dont tell the name of the country.

If you mean the date link, it *is* still working (I've just gone to see it myself). Did you make sure you 'logged in' to the newsletter first? As I forgot to and it wasn't there, so logged in and then it was.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the tip!
When I cleared out my cookies I was able to see the Alvar Hanso link using Safari.
The cookie was not listed under "thehansofoundation" so I just cleared all of them.
The newsletter animation played as if I'd been there before.
Anyone experience this on a windows machine?

You say that it's "intentional" but why would they do that intentionally?
No code or mystery there just frustration!

its not a cookie. flash caches all the files. you have to find the folder where the .swf files are and get rid of them, and itll be like you never visited the site before.

I just got an update from the Hanso Foundation site RSS feed that says "Alvar Hanso profile updated".

I went to look at it and I can't see what is different, but it is still all funky since the last Persephone message. Did anyone make special note of what the bio actually read?
