Clue #28 - Gary Troup Info (3) Newspaper Ad & Response

The Hanso Foundation bought AD space in several metropolitan newspapers across the US. Jennifer in Boston was first to notice and send me an email. I've heard it's in the Chicago Tribune, LA Times, Philadelphia DailyNews, New York, Washington, and Dallas (and I'm sure other places). Here is what the AD said:

A message From Hugh McIntyre, Director of Communications at the Hanso Foundation

Don't Believe "Bad Twin"

For over thirty years, The Hanso Foundation has stood for compassion and innovation, but today, our reputation has been attacked in the novel "Bad Twin," written by Gary Troup and published by Hyperion books.

Throughout the pages of "Bad Twin" readers have found numerous passages featuring misinformation about the Hanso Foundation and its partners. The Hanso Foundation strongly objects to the book "Bad Twin," and encourages readers to make up their own minds.

The truth about the Hanso Foundation is available at www.TheHansoFoundation.org and not on the pages of Gary Troup's "Bad Twin".

Experience it for yourself.

Thank you, and namaste.

Hey does anybody thinks Alvar's picture looks like Jack's father? I know it's a long shot, but think of the possibilities... A man very rich, powerfull... he was dead but appeared for jack at the island... Maybe I'm just talking shit but the photo of Hanso looks very similar to Jackie's daddy xD

I have an unrelated comment to the paper, but I wanted to know if other people had the same thing happen. When you go to the Hanso Foundation website and sit through the intro, is the audio not quite synched to the video at the beginning? As the clip continues it gets better, but at the beginning I'm not even sure that the what the woman is saying (with her lips) is what the audio is. Plus it seems to me that there are two speakers, one that says everything but namaste at the end of the message. I haven't seen anything about this and didn't know if was just my computer or not, it's just weird for a professional website to have such a stupid glitch in it. Anyway, thanks for any thoughts!

Just explaining my words... I've started thinkin about that couse' persephone says pointing the Alvar's pic: "Doesn't this match anyone?", so I've started to think about men that we already know who could match the photo.... I've also thought of Locke's dad... but, for me, Jack's dad looks more similar.

No, your just looking too far into this. The first line 'notice the grainy far away picture' shows she's clearly refering to the fact the picture is different to all the rest, not that it looks like someone else.

I googled it and found this:

For, Hindu(s), of course, the greeting of choice is "Namaste," the two hands pressed together and held near the heart with the head gently bowed as one says, "Namaste." Thus it is both a spoken greeting and a gesture.

Anyone find it weird that this seemingly unreligious company (active projects in Mathematics, Life extension, and Genome advancement) would use a religious based greeting.

I just realized this today while looking at the Hanso newspaper ad (which didn't appear in the Washington Post, btw). I never really knew what the flourish from the O in the Hanso logotype was, but looking at it it's clearly a ying yang symbol, with the O representing the black dot of the white part. Does this mean anything?

Also, I think this was probably just part of the logo design, but I think it's interesting that there is more
"White" in the ying yang than there is "Black"

Posted this below, but this is the active thread of the moment. PLEASE let me know if this is totally from left field...

So, has anyone acknowledged the fact that the "Rachel" in the code could refer to Rachel Nave, granddaughter of S.K. Nave? There's some stuff I read above about M. Sontag @ GPC listing Nave as one of his favorite authors, and some other stuff (in-game or not?) about suspicious circumstances around S.K. Nave's death. I just don't have the brainpower to put it all together...except for this: a knave is another word for a jack. Not very subtle, but interesting.

Something else that I don't know what to do with. In Rachel Nave's amazon list(http://www.amazon.com/gp/richpub/listmania/fullview/1TDA72A9PXIMY/ref=cm_lm_pdp_title_full/104-6985386-8733503), she mentions a tesseract: Four-dimensional hypercube; its vertices are (+/-1, +/-1, +/-1, +/-1). It is a polychoron formed from eight equal cube cells that are perpendicular to each other at their faces. It is the tetraspace analog to the square in planespace and the cube in realmspace. In some literature, the term tesseract refers to the inner projection of a tetracube into realmspace, which looks like a cube within a cube.

Phew.

Anyway, just wanted to get that all down before I forgot.

Could the pic of Alvar, theorized in some places to possibly be a woman, be S.K. Nave? Related to Jack? Though, I like the Locke's father stuff...

Personally I think there is a better chance of Locke's Dad being the real "Sawyer" (the one who's con resulted in the death of our sawyer's parents). THink about it, Locke's dad is a con man, were not sure of his real name, hes of the right age.... PLus I doubt that Alvar Hanso would have gotten himself in the money problems Lockes dad did nor would he have had to steal a kidney from his son.

Persephones text under Alvar Hanso's picture, says "It doesn't match anyone else?"

The strange part is, it says "it" not "he" which would point at Alvar. By saying IT, it is as if they keep the gender, or, what it is, a secret.
Cause they say "it doesnt match *anyone* else" They can't be meaning the picture, that would be "anything" else.
It always struck me as strange, that single line, I may be stuck on that particular thing to see the big picture, but its bugging me.

If I were to match that grainy Alvar Hanso picture to any of the actors we've seen in the TV show: It would have to be the fake Henry Gale.
Same nose, sunken eyes, different hair.

Since Michael rescued this man (to bargain for his son, or bc he's become an Other) he must be important to the Others. Not just someone to kill to prevent from talking.
So either he is "Him" or Alvar Hanso. Or just a relation like his son.
If Alvar Hanso was life extended like Joop the Orangutan that would explain him being young, and would also explain why he's so good mentally manipulating everyone.

I listened to the audiobook. It's cheesy, on purpose I would guess. But it's entertaining enough. And the references to show elements are funny.
It doesn't say anything disparaging about Hanso foundation or Widmore as companies specifically. It does say some nasty things about Mittelwerk. Which might be his motivation for writing an PR ad in a newspaper.

2 and a half cents, Nate

Re: the Namaste at the end of the Hanso messages

Namaste is a Yogic greeting that means "Seek the inner light of life" (or roughly that, it's hard to translate these things)...it makes sense when you pair it with the 108 sins, and the 'Dharma Initiative' as dharma is 'doing what is right' etc.

Anyone see a pattern? I think they ARE a religious company...just not in a conventional way.

Stef: The reason I noted them as being an unreligious company was due to the things they're studying. but you could argue this is further proof. alvar hanso may have existed. but this could suggest that someone has uncovered someone else (female, imo) who has disposed of Alvar and is posing as him.

the reason I thought this was in the text after the world map, the text moves around a lot, throwing 'where is he' together in a way that, to me, emphasized 'she'.

add this to the fact that we have NO picture of 'him' aside from one that a clue has made a point of emphasizing the fact it is 'grainy' and doesnt fit with the others.

we also have no picture of liddy wales.

a lot of things are pointing this way.

If you scroll down a bit past the 1/4 mark, there's a picture of the 'Important News' section which can be found on the front page, bottom left of the Hanso site.

I don't know if they've corrected it.. but before there was a picture of a city with the words '...and our OUR work for a safer environment.'

So yes, even they can screw up the grammar or spell-checking every once in awhile.

Stefanie is right. The whole show has strong spiritual overtones and has had almost from ep 1. The Hanso site makes the company out to be a godsend for mankind. On the other hand, as we all know, just because you think you know what's right doesn't mean you really do and power corrupts. Perhaps Alvar started the thing off with the best of intentions, and many areas of the company may well still have good intensions (the thing about Sri Lanka and how "it just isn't right") but (Evil Dr?)Mittlewerk has somehow taken control. Maybe he is in hiding. Maybe he was even on the plane...

I'm not sure how much cross-speculation is worthwhile, but much of the Others behavior has seemed strongly cult-like to me (the use of drugs to keep claire docile, the overwhelming interest in children, dialogue such as Fenry's "He's a great man!", the fervent devotio, as well as their apparent ability to recruit Michael).

The fact that the others are quite possibly former scientists who are/were employed by Hanso/Dharma makes these religious implications even more curious since scientists aren't known for being particularly devout.

So far, the religious undercurrents have not played a large role in the game. Other than the inconsistencies betweenthe superficial use of harmoneous phrases and symbols and Hanso's actual influence in the world having much darker undertones, there hasn't been much evidence in this arena. Still, fun to speculate about.

Re: the gender of Hanso. All of the references to Hanso in public (though they are admittedly rare) confirm that he is, indeed, male. I think there's even an oblique reference to him in Bad Twin about how he was "a gentleman."

The picture is deliberately grainy and indistinct (indeed, much of the meat of the most recent clue is to point out how indistinct it is!). Liddy's picture is still a mystery but other than both being involved with the Hanso Foundation, there is nothing else linking these two. If I were to guess, I would say Liddy is going to become an additional character at some future point as I believe middlewerk will.

It seems to me that the game is still largely in an expository stage, letting people know that haven't been rabid fans of Lost who Hanso is, and the possibly nefarious influence of the Hanso Foundation.

Anybody notice that on the Mental Health page the Hanso quote at the top is a link? It just flips out the "Inquire Today" window, but I don't remember that from yesterday...

Re: Bad Twin

I listened to the audiobook. It's cheesy, on purpose I would guess. But it's entertaining enough. And the references to show elements are funny.
It doesn't say anything disparaging about Hanso foundation or Widmore as companies specifically. It does say some nasty things about Mittelwerk. Which might be his motivation for writing an PR ad in a newspaper.

I notcied the 'inquire now' link on the mental health page a couple of days ago, assumed it had already been mentioned since you can't get any further with it, same as the other logins/links on the site.

You know, if Alvar "made his mark" during WWII he would be a very old man. The end of the war was 61 years ago and he'd have to be at least an adult before he could make that mark. Of course, if your company has it's very own Life Extension Project going on you're going to benefit from that...right? So, he'd be between 80ish and say, Joop's age, 105. He may look much younger, but there could be side effects. Back to Locke's father=Alvar Hanso; I wonder if the treatment could cause kidney failure.

There has to be something more to these newspaper ads than just "something neat." It seems like it would cost a considerable amount of money and time to publish this ad across the country in various papers. Has anyone looked into there being an actual clue there?

Curious, but I'm guessing glitch. Are you all utilizing your tab buttons when exploring the pages? You should b/c it reveals the hidden links.

just watched orientation ep in uk and remember the red egyptian hieroglyphics, they mean cause of death. persephone leaves her codes in red. hieroglyphs themselves, were called τὰ ἱερογλυφικά (γράμματα) / tà ʰieroglyfiká (grámmata), that is "graven characters" on monuments (such as stelae, temples and tombs). maybe alvar's tomb is somewhere on the island with the symbols on it

I have yet to see this mentioned...but I think there is a clue in this ad. I have found two masseages in the ad. They are written backwards (so you'd need a mirror to read it correctly) and are in fine gray print. Look in the space between the 2nd and third paragrap. All I can make out is "If you are one, know one". It looks like there is something else written below that line but I can't make it out yt. Also at the very bttom of the ad above the Hanso logo is another message-Happy Mothers Day!

I don't know if this has been found yet, but go to Garytroup.com there is a website there-although not about Gary TRoup-about a man amed Enzo Valenzetti. There's a black/white picture there-could this be Alvar?
Enjoy the site and all links! I'm still going through it-there's so much to this game it's unreal!
