Clue #38 - Persephone (11) Hole 2, Photo

Persephone posted another message at persephone.thehansofoundation.org . This time is just said "2". Since she was talking about mouse holes the other day, we tried this: hole2.thehansofoundation.org .

Who is it? Some have been saying Marvin Candle but we don't think so, do you? A new character? What do you think it means?

The Speaker over at "insidetheexperience" (i.e. the ABC mouthpiece) is being very mysterious about how we should "read" this picture. Who will be the first to "decode" it? Send us an email if you get it.

EDIT:
We just wanted to say "GOOD WORK" to everyone chatting in the comments and sending us emails. We've considered a lot of options and aren't completely sold on the legitimacy of anything just yet. Maybe Persephone will give us more on Tuesday. We're going to call it a night but will check back first thing in the morning. Remember to EMAIL if anything develops.

*Thanks Jim, Chris, Darla, Robyn, Matt, Jake, John, Alana, Oliver, Andrea, Danny (and more!) for helping with this clue.

maybe this M business is what we have to type on the new Joop invisible txt box?

Regarding the filename q9als2002.gif, q9 could be an abbreviation for quinine which is a drug used to treat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ALS.

No, I don't think this has anything to do with the game but it's amazing the patterns that you can find if you look for them.

I would suggest taking "cTlhbHMyMDAyIA" through a anagram generator. "q9als2002" as Base64 = cTlhbHMyMDAyIA. I personally dont have to time to shift through all of the anagrams.

I know this doesn't really add any detail to the face or help identify this person OR solve "the clue", but I think it does help rule out the lines as being a binary message or barcode or anything else.

When the photo is blurred just slightly using a gaussian blur, the rigid contrasting lines begin to look more and more like shades of gray and an actual BW photograph. To see what I mean, visit here:

I'm going to repost one of my last comments cause i think we are going in exagerated paths. No way the "game" would be solved messing around with dificult operations on an image processing software. It just doens't make sense. So i guess, some of us should focus on this (i think it's more logical):

Let's see. We've got Lung Cancer and a mysterious cure. The we got joop living so many years. Then, on the WWP Press Release we have the word "miracle" clickable. And the guy in the photo i think it's the same one from the new image.

Finnally: The file name refers to Alvar Last Seen in 2002. And we have on the map that location that gives us the strange code. Any clue?

Lessons learned and meta-game strategy

After 24 hours and well over 1,000 posts related to this puzzle, it seems we're no closer than ever to an answer. I think this is intentional on the part of the gamegods, and I think we're supposed to learn from it. Here's what we have learned:

1. Not every puzzle will have an answer that is revealed immediately. Think about it, folks, they're going to try to keep the world occupied all summer -- maybe longer -- and we just can't be solving a puzzle every day. Sometimes the puzzle might not be solvable without additional clues, and those might take time to develop. Also, there might be multiple parallel puzzles going on simultaneously. I wonder what we've been missing while we've been focused on No-Face.

2. The game world is complex, vast, and well-funded. (This thing isn't going to go away soon, with the combined marketing weight of Coke, Chrysler, Verizon, and Monster behind it.) The world of THF alone contains many characters who have not yet been introduced, and numerous mysterious projects that have not been explored. There are many doors yet to open. And there are other companies, with yet other characters, that haven't been called into the game yet.

3. We should expect that, like the writers of the TV show, the gamegods will introduce story lines without fully knowing where they will lead. They have created a large environment for play, and now they get to let us run loose in it.

4. There is interaction and feedback between the game and the players. When people started decompiling Falsh and reviewing source, the creators started hiding clues in Code. They're listening.

All of this is just to say that anyone who is trying to "solve" the game is on the wrong track. The "I think this anagram means that Alvar and Joop are twins, and THF has created a mutant strain of monkey people from their pole-shifting EMRI research gone horribly awry" posts are missing the point -- it's their world, people, and we just get to play in it for a while. Characters and storylines will develop, play out, and spawn new stories. Enjoy the story-telling and puzzle-solving. Don't be looking for a quick exit.

Patience and good luck.

One thought on the Als/Denmark thing. If you look at the newsletter page on thf.org, in the top right corner there is a map for WWPDP, and there is a red dot over Denmark with one of those little hospital icons. The dot doesn't show up when you go to the actual WWPDP page, nor does it link to anything but there could be a connection. Given the scale of the map it's impossible to say if the dot is indicating Als Ilsand or Copenhagen. Alvar was supposedly in Copenhagen before arriving in Madrid December 31, 2002 where he was last seen. There's definitely another Hanso facility in Denmark, we know this because that's where Joop is (the press release about his 105th birthday is out of Copenhagen).

A couple of other random (and purely coincidental) things came up randomely when I looked at the Als Wiki

- There is a huge castle on Als that has been converted to a hospital

- Denmark is a kingdom with an Heir Apparent (Prince Frederik)

I tried to work in the heir apparent/Thomas Mittlewerk thing, since Als is near the German Border (for those of you who are't aware, Mittlewerk was the name of an underground facility where the V2 rocket was built during WWII (During which Sam Toomey was stationed on an island in the Pacific and heard the numbers)) But Mittlewerk was actually in Harz, Germany which is nowhere near the border with Denmark.

Anyway, I'm just talking here . . . thoughts?

MJM- I suppose not, no. lol

Lanie- I think a great boon to us here is that we've learned from experience that Persephone knows when we're all wandering around in a giant Charlie Foxtrot (Ask a Soldier if you don't know what that means...). Back in the day when we were trying to figure out what 1 and 6 means, she told us it was 8. She knows when we're floundering, and I have confidence that she'll step up and point us in the right direction.

That's what I like about this game...you buy a PC game in the EBG or summat and it's a disk with a definite end. This game is adaptive, with the adaptations usually going in our favour.

As everyone knows, I've been a big proponent of the JFK, JR theory, but can't figure out why that would be a clue. My incredibly smart and amazing mom has a correlary. JFK, JR was the heir apparent to Camelot, i.e, the horse head in the face. And he died in a plane crash.

REPOST AGIAN:

Man! I cant stand it anymore!!! I have came to the conclusion that it is a Trojan horse in the face. Now before you go dismissing this, go check out the two photos and compare them.

Also think about the name "hole TWO" and the hint "the mouse has TWO holes"

If Alvar had someone (maybe this Kelven) "filling in for him" that would make him a TROJAN HORSE wouldnt it???

Here are the links:

See for yourselves how well the pics match! Not sure if there is words in the "hair line" but to me, it seems like the "mohawk" on the trojan horse.

What do people know about the Greek playwright Plautus (the originator of the line about mice and holes)? He wrote a comic play about two twins, one of whom is lost at an early age.

I haven't seen much on this, except an attribution of the quotation to him.

Thanks to everyone for input on my back-tracking with the faceless pics.

ihearttoast: tried the 3d route, but couldn't turn it into anything... good idea though.

For the rest:
Here's all I've found so far:
There were two images of the first Faceless Man (here-after referred to as F1)
There were two images of the second Faceless Man (here-after referred to as F2)

F1: the two images have different color pallets. The first image had 4 shades on its pallet, while the second (and picture currently on hole2) only has two.

When I altered the the two "extra" colors, I found a band across the top of the photo that looks like it could be Morse Code (I have a cap of the photo before the change, and one after to show that these are not the same marks that were previously visible)

For F2, I have found that the color pallets have the same amount of colors, but they are not in the same order. This means that when you convert them to a standard pallet, such as the Windows System pallet like I have done, the images become different.

I'm not sure what the reason is for this yet, but I assume there is something to it. I can't fathom why they would have taken the time to change the pallets for these pictures if there wasn't something else there.

Sorry it took so long to get back on this, but I set up my own blog space to start posting pics and theories - and possibly some other nonsensical ramblings - on. You can see some pics there - http://lostsurge.blogspot.com/
