Clue #45 - Persephone (13) MFI Update, War

There has been an update to the Mathematical Forecasting Initiative page on the Hanso website. In the bottom right, there is a new picture that says MFI Forecast Map. If you click on it, it takes you to a map of the world, with clickable pictures that give you information about the countries. Also, in the middle of Asia, there is a hidden link that says, written backwards, "She was an employee of the foundation".

Using information from the "CIA World Fact Book" fill in the following blanks:
  • In the USA, if you click the dollar sign, type 42,000 in the blank and hit enter, it begins to glow blue.
  • In Italy, if you click the syringe, type in 10.4 in the blank and then hit enter, it also begins to glow blue (and you quickly see a flash of the Dr. from Joop's pic).
  • In Sudan, click the person, type 2.55 in the blank and hit enter, it too begins to glow blue
  • A circle appears south of India. If you click that, it takes you to a letter from Peter Thompson, followed by a message from Persephone saying "The Hanso Foundation: Starting wars so you dont have to."
*Props to John Sarallo, Vince Delaney, MrInvisible, Cecilia/PandoraX, & JCS107 for cracking this clue first!

FYI: The Speaker (insidetheexperience.com), The Lost Ninja (Australia 7 Network), and the UK Blogger (UK Channel 4) are all working together in conjunction with game creators. The Lost Ninja has an anagram on his site right now but we're pretty sure it is only to tell Australian fans where they can pick up a copy of "Bad Twin". If you're in Sydney, stop by the Customs House on Friday during the "Japan Historical Photo Exhibition". Keep an eye on Ninja's site as he will soon be revealing a "password" question that you have to ask to prove that you're not with the Hanso Foundation so you can get a copy of the book. Aussie fans...let us know if there are any clues revealed at this event besides the handing out/selling of books.

P.S. New Podcast coming tomorrow...

Very simple page with a single entry box. Doesn't seem to do anything.

Looks like a wave of folks found this one. My guess is it took some a little time to find the three pass codes (42000, 2.55, and 10.4), which are conveniently lifted from the CIA Factbook. Looks like that might be a useful reference for some of the other clues that we may get stuck on.

Ha! I remember that critter from Star Trek! It's funny to see where special effects have come.

I doubt there is a connection. I also would not refer to the Star Trek critter as a bear.

I would guess it's just trying to evoke Joseph Mobutu (Congolese dictator from 1965-1997) without actually saying his name.

It's not Henry Gale. This is the same picture that is at the top of the Mental Health Appeal page. This image is also the "face" you can see behind Joop.

If the creators of this game wanted to really make it interesting, how soon would the Hanso Foundation begin a massive misinformation campaign to throw us off or discredit the source of the hacks?

I could easily seen them doing this from now until the start of the season in the fall.

I also find this Peter Thompson character a bit useless as a corporate lawyer. He's got his name on every piece of evidence so far, including emails. Any good corporate attorney will tell you to keep your company emails as pristine as possible because they are very easy to obtain as evidence.

Another thing we don't really see with Hanso is their competition. Even research or spook organizations have their competitors. Claims of a 105+ year old Joop would have half of the Pharmaceutical corporations heading to Copenhagen in an attempt to find out what secrets they are hiding.

Anyone who thinks that JJ Abrams is the only one responsible for Lost and the Experience, etc... is foolish. JJ co-created the series with two others including Lindelof AND JJ Abrams has been off doing production and press for M:I:3.

If he wasn't key in the final episodes of ALIAS, then I certainly don't expect his influence with LOST at the moment.

Sorry. Kinda bitter about the lack of attention to the other writers and producers. Got a writer's crush on David Fury and Drew Goddard. (Goddard better go over to LOST this next season)

The picture of the labcoat is the same as the one found hidden in the one of the other flash files. I found this out from here.

http://jayandjack.com/wiki/index.php?title=Thehansofoundation.org

This was a picture that seemed very obscure in that I only pretty much just found it along with a few other people I have read about who seem pretty hot at this Lost Experience stuff. The point belly0fdesire made about someone cheated their way to these pictures may be true but it seems that it has been the ONLY way to get this picture before (the place the labcoat pic was found previously has been around for some time now). Therefore if there is a way to get to this picture through the game it seems to be eluding everybody.

Although the site seems basic, I have been to that many sites that are not in-game; the fact that this one appears to be in-game(from a link found on THF.org albeit hidden in a flash file) makes it more interesting I think.

I agree that it is possible that there could be meaningless stuff hidden in there. Seems to me that the makers of this experience could also deliberately give us a lot of rubbish (red herrings) but I like to believe that things like that are found for a reason (it is a strange picture after all) and I will be blissfully unaware of "red herrings" as the thought would spoil it a little for me.

I'm wondering when the story will develope past dirt on the Hanso peeps. Not that it isn't interesting, especially the possibility of this population model being sinister. Makes me wonder if some of it's principles have been applied to the Others MO. Culling rival tribes periodically? Perhaps the selection of people kidnapped was to do with their leadership and resourcefulness. They don't see the survivors as a big threat without those three present. But anyway, this isn't really a story at all so far, just a begining.

I'm also wondering about the level of complexity that the Game is actually at. Did they take into account people "cheating" there way to clues? Are we expected to examine the flash files and other things in intricate detail? There was always going to be people out there that will look at things like that, but at the same time I don't know how much they are expecting people to rely on the mass internet community for information. I would assume they know people will be examining anything they can examine, including flash files and that with the internet being gossip central as soon as one person knows one of those secret bits almost everyone will. Having said that, people have made larger miscalculations. *shrug* Anyway, I reckon it is all part of the game and that the game is somewhat flexible, so that if the community in general doesn't get a hint right away, they will offer another bit. There have been a few hints that have had multiple sources for passwords so I reckon it's all fair game.

Time to start examining new pictures.

The Hanso Foundation (and many of the other sites involved with the game) use Flash. This is a technology used to create the dynamic effects used within these sites. It is something that is created using a computer program. Reverse engineering the site shows things which you cannot view in your web browser and these hidden images and link(s) show up this way.

(A rough explanation but gives the jist)

I think the Lost Experience will be dealing with the same problem as reporters have covering the Enron story. What it initially misses is the PERSONAL ELEMENT. Right now, the only thing is our connection to Persephone and the story inside "Bad Twin." If (hopefully) BOTH Hanso foundation AND Persephone will ramp up the personal element with Hanso character assasinating P. and Persephone exposes more of Hanso's disapperance... then we'll get closer to the story.

Fingers crossed.

Re: The hidden pictures. I don't think the old guy in the picture with the woman looks like any of the Hanso photos. I also don't really think the guy in the fan film looks like him either. It's just different old guys with grey hair. It's about as close as the black and white face picture was to Dr.Candle. Wishful thinking really. I am pretty certain the Mental Health Appeal and joopman picture is the same as the colour faceless man. Although what that tells us I don't know because we don't know who he is in the first place. I know that. I thought the familytrack site might not have anything to do with the lost experience but the fact that it was linked (although hidden) made me suspect that it was and I was trying to determine a link to this familytrack site and the game somehow. What this hidden picture proves to me is that it is linked to the game. The main evidence IS the link from THF.org but the proof to me that it is part of the game to play is the picture.

I think that made it clearer.

So even though the link was hidden in the flash... maybe it's NOT in game... I dunno, seems REALLY odd if it is. Perhaps an easter egg left by the builder of the flash?

I think "Bad Twin" simply plants a lot of info for the future. It introduced the Widmore family more prominently (although there are 2 SONS in the book) which brings in stuff from the show and plants some things for the future... Mittlewerk's presence and the feeling for the story... What the stakes are, what people's motivations could be... etc.

But sadly, I think the real thing will be this Valenzetti equation will ACTUALLY be the big thing to come out of it.

BTW, I recommend getting the audiobook instead. Takes up less of your time and there's more to investigate with their WHISPER-filled Chapter Introductions (Mittlewerk is bad).

I thought that this clue was pretty straightforward. One thing that bothers me about the game thus far, in regards to the slow progression of the game, etc., is that there's no *tangible* way that the game tracks progress, keeps track of clues, and so on. Slow I can live with. I don't know if anyone else here played a game from EA called Majestic back in 2001, but they had awesome interactivity - they sent e-mails, had websites, called you, faxed you, sent instant messages etc. There was client software for the game, you completed episodes - and many of the puzzle-type aspects that we're using for this were applicable. This is so open-ended. You're just dropped onto this website, and everyone once in a while, someone shoves a clue your way, and the temptation to cheat - not use teamwork, but essentially just read about how to solve the puzzle rather than solve it oneself - is so overwhelming that I imagine the number of us actually fiddling with the game versus the people reading about us fiddling with the game is, sadly, rather small.

With the budgets that ABC and the corporate sponsors have, I'd have expected something more interactive. Instead of Perspehone popping up on the website like that, maybe an e-mail, or an IM that leads us onto the trail of something. Anyone who played Majestic I think will understand what I mean. Just...a tad more structure, something to give people incentive to go through the motions at least of completing the puzzles themselves. I think this is what people were expecting. I know I was. Hunting randomly around the Hanso site each day looking for a new clue isn't exactly fun.

Like I said, I don't mind the speed of the progression. Building up to something big is fun - it's something that the show does well. I just want something *slightly* more structured. I don't want to miss anything. Even something similar to the way Google handled the progression of the 24 puzzles for The DaVinci Code would be nice, in terms of keeping track.

Back on to the hidden images found in the swf file.

Specifically, the black and white image of the labcoat. It was found originally in the swf file of Peter Thompson bio clue and then again found in the latest clue, again in the swf file, of the map that we are all looking at. The image seems strange and when opening using Windows picture and fax viewer it looks as it did on the web. In photoshop it looks the same. In Windows Paint though it is a very different story. It is the same picture of the guy in the labcoat which pops up in the background of the map when you enter the third answer (2.55) into the map. (not the picture of the MHA guy). You can see here.

http://www.boomspeed.com/mishiems/AfterLast.JPG

It is the same as the picture that comes up in the Peter Thompson Bio page clue which can be found here.

http://jayandjack.com/wiki/index.php?title=Thehansofoundation.org#Peter_Thompson

I have looked at this picture in comparison to the Marvin Candle Initiation video (early on when you can see Marvin's full upper body) and they are identical. I'm sure. Even the arm (not the prosthetic one) is in the same position. Also the bit at the top left of his head that the light is shining on is what shows up in this picture.

I haven't seen anyone mention that this picture can be viewed in two different ways so if it has come up before then I am sorry.

Can someone who knows a lot about how images are made up on the computer (it is a PNG file) explain why there are two view to this picture. May be a clue. Could other images we have seem somehow be manipulated and shown to have hidden clues?
Thanks

In the series, the boat race that Desmond does, is something to do with Penelope's Dad. I wonder if Mr Widmore (Pens Dad) basically sent Desmond to the Island to get him away from his daughter. It certainly worked. Or for another reason perhaps.

Another thing that comes to mind is if the Grand Universal Theory of Everything (GUTS) has anything to do with Lost and the Mathematical Forecasting Initiative. To have a theory of everything would suggest you could predict the future and manipulate things accordingly.
It seems that in Lost, there are so many interlinking backgrounds that the whole thing seems completely unfeasible without someone/something manipulating events. It would also explain that, if the survivors were chosen in some way, how they managed to get them all there together.
Seems possible.

Sorry for talking about Lost but I feel that it may be some kind of connection. More and more it seems that the Lost series and the Lost Experience are overlapping somehow.

Thanks for reading

I know this isn't the place to talk plot, but of course they're overlapping! There's this weird disconnect in this community between the show and the ARG. The ARG is highlighting the canon of the show. It's the backstory. Of course the backstory is going to have something to do with the show at some point.

Where do you think minnesotametallurgy.com, widmore.com, paik-heavy.com, and all the other backstory-related fansites came from? From show fans who were looking for more backstory, more definition to the mythology. The ARG just provides the best logical outlet.

I'm a show fan first, but the ARG is perfect for the atrophied little X-Files fanboy in me.

I have been manipulating the image in photoshop elements 3 and have made the image a lot clearer.
If you go to enhance and then auto smart fix it shows a lot more detail. You can even see the Dharma logo on the right breast pocket area just like the one Marvin is wearing in the orientation video. You can see Marvins prosthetic arm. You can also see why the bottom left of the labcoat is cut off as this is where Marvins hand is.

I find Marvin Candle/Mark Wickman really intriguing. I wonder where they will fit into this.

The forecast map link is not working on my computer for the Hanso page. Any ideas? I've done all the clues up through "insane asylum" and the sublymonal stuff.

if you right-click on the file and choose open with and select Paint (if not there choose browse and get Paint that way). It is the way the image is put to us in the clues. Same coloring. I just thought you may be interested.
It definitely is Marvin. I still feel the picture found at hole2.thehansofoundation.org is Marvin too. He seems to come up a lot as does the MHA guy. I feel/hope their importance/relation will be revealed soon. Or are we missing something already?

Also is he anything to do with "Bad Twin" seeing as though there are two of them. I know it's been mentioned before but felt it relevant now.

Speaker has already said we're using it wrong. I would imagine that the obvious approach (trying to figure out who it is) is not the correct approach.

Well you don't have to be rude about it. Just trying to help like everyone else.

Sorry. Came off differently than I meant it.

I really was trying to be self-deprecating, as I absolutely am a dilettante at this ARG stuff.

That being said, I am intrigued by your catch on the background images. It's often the little things (as I've observed in my brief time here) that often prove most meaningful later on.

Greetings All! Could the no face image be some type of over lay to another image...I know it sounds Goonie like...but what the heck...perhaps that image fits over another image or map giving us more direction on where the island is...just a simple thought...

Peace & Namaste!

I am pretty sure that it is just to do with the lighting.
In the video he appears more fuller and puffier but its just because it is darker in the picture.

This new finding on the numbers is very interesting though. It seems that the statistical numbers for t he places in the map have another meaning. A code maybe or something else. I'm going to try and find more things with these numbers.
It is true that the 3.077 is found on letyourcompassguideyou.com, 4 times at NorthEast, SE, SW and NW. I don't know what they mean but someone must. I look forward to finding out.
And just what made you try the TAN function nd? Was it a fluke or did you have a reason?

This is interesting. It explains about gematrian numbers which is what are in the map statistics.

In regards to the compass on the Jeep site, I noticed that there are four instances of two numbers. Each of the numbers (3.0776 and .726542) have one instance that is missing part of the total number. In the case of 3.0776 one of them is missing the 6 and in the case of .726542 one of them is missing the 542. Coincidentally, or not, they are both in the SW region of the compass.

Now, I'm not going to begin trying to figure out what it may mean, but it may be something significant in the future.

Sorry if someone mentioned this already...I just didnt have the patience to read EVERY comment...

Has anyone noticed on the V-message letter that there are TWO types of fonts? Seems to me that the blacked out stuff is original text and the message in the middle looks TYPED in with a REAL type writer. Look at the font in the message up close! The letters are not lined up well either.

If you look at the creases on Marvin Candles real arm in the video

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g65/wizardry_eas/marvinorient.jpg

you will see that they are identical to the ones in the picture found here. It has to be Marvin.

Ooh! More info on the numbers.

Well, if matt the pale can be taken at his word, then why would the image have gone red-x?

Crashed?

Prematurely posted?

Wrong image file?

Taken down for other reasons?

Intentionally brief?

Matt here is the only one who has claimed to have seen the image.

Yes. That is correct. When I was searching in google I got to that page and went down so far and thought "I am not reading all this babble just now". I hadn't got to the compass picture. I came back here and then someone else mentioned the link but more specific. I went back and couldn't believe I missed it. Then came back here and as I was typing you made your post.
