Clue #6 - Persephone (1 cont'd) Letters, Message

The latest on The Hanso Foundation Website...

Click the "Send a Message to Joop" link, enter "breaking strain" as your message. This was mentioned in the previous clue. You need to do the newsletter login first (see post below). You're taken to a flash puzzle, click the circles, although if you just wait they will cycle automatically, there will be two each time. After 3 or 4 times of this you will get a red circle, click it to read the "Global Welfare Consortium Memo". At the bottom click on the signature to be taken to the next memo, again mouse around to read and at the bottom click again on the signature to receive a message stating "The Hanso Foundation, setting world speed records for subverting authority." Click the message to be taken back to Joops Corner.

Letter 1
(Dated September 19, 2005)
Letter 2
(Dated September 25, 2005)
Red Memo
(looks different on the Hanso site but says the same thing)

On a messageboard sdrawcabton88 made the following observation/interpretation of the letters:

"The first letter is from the director general of the Global Welfare Consortium, Jacques Maillot. It is sent to the Clinical Director of Centers for Disease Control. It basically says that there is a deadly disease that broke out near one of the Hanso Foundations research places. The GWC suspects the Hanso Foundation being responsible for releasing this disease. They have asked the Hanso Foundation themselves to see their lab, results, and experiments, but gotten nowhere with them, because they just ignore the request. Wanting some more authority to intervene, they ask the CDC for help.

Six days later, another letter from GWC is sent to the CDC, but this time apologizing for the way they reacted. They said that the Hanso Foundation is now being very cooperative, and no signs of them being responsible for the outbreak are evident.

The wierd thing is, this letter is from a NEW Director General, Peter Thompson. Peter thompson works for the Hanso Foundation (look on the site, in exec bios)

Thus is my theory:

The Hanso Foundation is not as friendly as it appears, and they DID release that disease. To cover it up, the killed/got rid of/kidnapped/replaced the heirarchy of the GWC, so their operations could continue to operate smoothly...."

This may explain what it means when we read the message from Persephone that the Hanso Foundation is setting world speed records for "subverting authority".

Its also been noted that there seems to be an image of a person imposed over Joop in the live webcam, HERE is a link to a site that has either a clue or just something cool.

Just FYI, I got that without sending "breaking strain" as a message to joop. I first signed up for the newsletter (using the password "breaking strain"), and then ANY message I sent to joop got this result.

Yes, I also sent a different message to Joop and got the same result. The image of the person in the webcam picture is quite creepy! Does this mean that Joop and that man on the "Mental Health Appeal" page are connected?

Also if you try signing in again after you've used 'breaking strain' as the code .. it just says 'Welcome back! No new messages. Bye!'

So I'm thinking that while you are signed in, if you find goodies then you should try signing in again to see if you ever receive new messages.

I saw the image of the person, but that's it. I didn't get taken anywhere else or see anything else.

I think it is important to note that the first letter is dated 3 days before the crash of Oceanic 815.

Never mind my last comment. I forgot... Oceanic 815 crashed in 2004, not 2005.

I think the MHA portal will be the next to concentrate on, seeing as how we got a "picture" of Joop when we signed up for the newsletter. Could the picture of this man be leading us to the next place?

I can't sign in..I can type my name in but it does not let me log in?

Also when I go to sign on the newsletter...I type in my name on the "lets get to know you..thingy" and then it asks me if I can see my name....and THEN all heck breaks out! Awful music and strange lines start filling the site and the site starts to disintegrate !!!

"1221 geneva 27" the address in the letters of the Global Welfare Consortium is actually a real address of the World Health Organization... however the WHO is on Avenue Appia and not rue grande 1623.

Did anyone notice that the second letter signed Mr. Peter Thompson, Acting Director General
Global Health Consortium

NOT Global Welfare Consortium, which is consistant throughout the first letter and the top of the second letter

I don't know if this has been brought up anywhere yet on the board...but I posted this under Clue #29 about the video that plays when you send a message to Joop:

Ok, I'm not sure where to post this and if it's already been mentioned, I apologize. :)

This is in regards the the flashes that take place on the Hanso site when talking to Joop. The letters that are shown talk about meningococcal disease in Africa having crossed the "simian/homo sapien" border or something along that line.
I did a google search for Meningoccal and Africa. The first hit took me to a newspaper article in a New Zealand newspaper that talks about a scientist suing the lab she works for because she caught meningoccal disease at their lab while working there and had t o have her legs and an arm amputated. (Dr. Candle's missing arm from the orientation clip?)
*now granted, she didnt catch the disease in Africa..but I didnt know you could lose limbs from this disease.*
It seems from the clues in the letters, that something went wrong with the Hanso experiments in Africa that made it so a strain of meningoccal disease that may have only been carried and spread by primates is now transferable to humans...or vice versa.
It seems to me that they were taking DNA or something (very scientific..I know..lol..but you get my point) from humans and putting them into primates or...vice versa. This would also explain why it looks like joop's picture is transposed over that of a human.
The blue picture that you get right after joop goes nuts looks like some sort of tissue or an organ that is being invaded by a virus or something like that.
Just my thoughts...hope you can help to dig into this further."

After looking into this further, I found on the WHO website, that Africa has a "meningitis belt" that covers the areas where Hanso's hospitals are located at in Africa. I also found that the meningoccus virus is studied by microbiologists with an interest in the viruses' built in DNA repair or recombinant DNA features. Basically, it looks like the meningitis virus has the ability to meld itself into the host's dna structure and it is believed that genetic factors play a part in who gets the disease and how severely they are affected by it.

I could be way off on this and I am sure there are more intelligent or sophisticated ways to explain it..but I am sure that the mention of meningitis, Africa and primates is an important clue.

Here is something else that explains how DNA may affect the aging process which would explain why a scientist might consider utilizing the DNA repair feature of the meningitis virus:
"DNA and RNA. DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is the material in every cell that holds the genes. Every day some DNA is damaged and most of the time it is repaired. But more and more damage occurs with age, and it may be that DNA repair, never 100 percent perfect, falls further and further behind. If so, the damage that does not get repaired and builds up could be one of the reasons that people age. "

Has anyone noticed that after sending msg to joop and viewing the letters, when it takes you back to joop's corner you are unable to click on the mental health link under active projects?
anyone else have this problem?

Something I noticed in regards to reading up both on meningitis and Tanzania...
First, in the writeup on Wikipedia on Tanzania, it mentions a Sayid...
"In 1841, Sultan Sayyid Said moved his capital from Muscat to Zanzibar; with him came many Arabs who invigorated the economy. In 1856, the Sultanate of Zanzibar was separated from the Sultanate of Oman; to Zanzibar belonged the island of Pemba as well as the coastal lands, including Kilwa."
I just found it interesting that there is another Sayid, that with him came many Arabs and that the area involves costal and isaland landscapes in this definition.

Second, in the wikipedia wqrite-up on meningitis, it mentions some of the side effects of the diease, one being headaches... Anyone else remember our man Sawyer blaming all those headaches he was gettingon not having glasses... Hmmm... correct diagnoses? Aaron ran a fever, and a nu,ber of characters including Hurley have suffered quite a bit of confusion...

Hi all,

I was watching Big Brother in the UK last night (18/06/2006) and just going into the second advert break there was an advert for a male perfume called 'Joop Jump' no other information, just a bloke taking his shirt off and a picture of the bottle.

Has anyone else seen this advert ?

Haven't see the advert but there was a perfume called Joop a few years ago, maybe its still around. It was the cheap 'chav' stuff that you bought for people you didn't like very much at Christmas!
