Clue #48 - Persephone (16) Countdown

On June 6, we saw a change to the Institute for Genomic Advancement page on the Hanso Foundation website, Persephone provided us with a countdown. See the following clues to find out what happened when the countdown ran out.

Check the text boxes under the timer, users can insert a cursor and delete each of the five words of the text (days, hours...) Perhaps it is meant to be replaced, unlocking a new clue?

you just go to IGA and click on disease... (it's underlined) and it will take you to the countdown.

HOLE4 does not matter.... not at all... what he said earlier was the result of someone not reading my posts.

The first time people logged on to play the game, it was to http://thehansofoundation.org and that is where the information was stored in their cache. If they log on the next time to http://www.thehansofoundation.org with the "www", the site will not recognize them because it cannot find the corresponding file in their cache. It assumes it is their first time visiting the site. The same thing will happen with every different thing you put in place of the "www". If you were to go to http://hole4.thehansofoundation.org, it would think it was your first time there and you will need to sign in to the newsletter page, say "yes" to the "are you one of the good guys" question and give the password all over again. Espiao had this problem this morning and was SURE that there was something new. If people are having problems, the main reason for their problem is that they are logging on in a way that is different from how they have been logging on... I always log on to the http://thehansofoundation.org without the "www". If I were to log on to the site in any other way, it would not recognize me and I would have to start from the beginning again...

To reitterate what I indicated about the image found in iga.swf(the counter) called "horah".

"Horah!" is something commonly yelled together during a Jewish dance. It can also refer to a style of music, a specific dance, and a general exclamation of celebration.

Perhaps this is preempting some sort of small victory soon to come.

Regardless, I believe simply having a new topic to post on is worthy of a grand community "Horah!" from us all.

Horah!

And, Namaste.

We sure like our statements of good greeting now don't we, LOST writers.

belly0fdesire (or anyone who may understand this software inquiry):

Are you familiar with lostsleep open source software? It occurs to me that Persephone's message itself may be a part of a larger clue. I found it very odd that she used the un-grammatical expression "I'm on no sleep."

Then I remembered that "nosleep" is an OS and MAC-friendly open-source software, and I was thinking maybe that is a hint of some type. Problem is, I've never worked with nosleep.

If the reference to no sleep is actually meaningful in that sense, it's possible her second sentence "I'm having trouble breaking through" also is a hint of sorts.

This is terribly speculative, and in all likelihood wrong. However, if anyone actually has used nosleep maybe they could confirm one way or the other my likely stupidity or unusually lucky guess...

Hello guys.

REALLY sorry to hear about antecedent (did he get too close to a clue? Were THF involved? Was that really Mrs Antecedent? LOL)but glad to hear he is ok.

ROTFLMAO @ jd getting the registry cleaner pop-up. I work in a computer shop and I see problems like that all the time.

I think pretty much all has been said about the new clue unless someone finds something else to follow. (text boxes in the countdown message struck me as odd though. I wanted to try "the numbers" but there were only 5 fields).

I guess plenty of time for research then. My list is slightly updated but it was really a list of topics. I started to try to fill the topics but very quickly realised it to be a task of monumentous proportions. I guess that will be the task of the new layout etc.

oh, and maybe the countdown is just a smokescreen to make us -want- to ignore LOST stuff until then. We'll overlook some little things they will do and they shall cackle in all of their evil Mittlewerk goodness!

Also, I get the feeling the Hanso Foundation is like Walmart now. The original founder of Walmart was a great guy, but the new owner is satan and has made Walmart evil. Perhaps Mittelwerk has done the same. Alvar Hanso was maybe a great visionary that died and his image is just kept around because Mittelwerk feels too weak to be in the public eye. All of this seems to be supported by clues from "Bad Twin", especially the recent Australian clues.

Truly 6.6.06 shall be a day to remember for the Lost Experience! So let it be written; so let it be done.

lol. No worries, bellyofdesire. As a programmer and flash artist, I just had to have my moment.

I say, good job, Evil! It isn't sad at all! This just means the THF.org people will try harder next time or quickly rectify their mistake. This is forcing them to face up to their own idiocy in choice of Flash coding. Past Flash has been fantastic, but this is just...

...

omg.

I just had an epiphany.

What if someone -for real-, not as part of the game, hacked them and put up some crappy thing just to jerk around with us? That would explain every bit of poor quality to it. Everything then makes sense. From the language to the countdown to the poor and rather lame Flash that is highly different from THF.org Flash work in the past.

It makes sense, people! I feel like I'm the Speaker or something!

heya folks,

I like the focus on persephone's grammar. Most of her clues so far have used mature language to impart her clues. In fact, she hasn't even used contractions (Where is Alvar Hanso...is he hiding? for example). Her use of the word cuz here is a bit odd.

Of course, almost all of persephone's clues are a bit odd.

Perhaps the coutdown clock is a clue too. 4:00 PM EST 6/7/06 appears to be the end time. Speaker said his birthday was on 6/8/06. Where is it 6/8/06 00:00:00:001 AM at 4:00:00:001 PM EST tomorrow? Could that also be in the same timezone as the 4 degrees 8 minutes 15 seconds East, 16 degrees 23 minutes 42 seconds South location?

I happen to be a believer that analysing the flash is just as valid as analysing HTML and Photo's etc. TBTB are surely aware that many of us will do this (if not right away then they sure do by now). Things that they do not want to be seen YET shouldn't be there. They are surely that intelligent.

What if everyone stopped doing that and TPTB decided to have a clue in there and we missed it?

There are so many talents here it seems unfair to isolate that one.

Moreover.
With this latest clue there was much speculation that it was just a placeholder as we were all bored so it would be kind of irrelevant that it came from this other place as it fits anyway. It hasn't spoiled anything really. And there is enough to analyse already without entering into searching about jew etc.

OR

Something that has been touched on (initially by lena I think) that the message seemed strange. Is it someone else. If so maybe they are trying to act as persephone somehow. Maybe the fact that THF would never normally use rubbish flash like this is because this is deliberately all supposed to look amateur and someone else. The page EviL^^ had found may be an important clue in that direction.

All IMHO and there could be many other interpretations. Sorry if anyone disagrees.

javy, it is sad because "she" left in a piece of an old example flash file that led us to get all LOST nerdy about the hidden image of "Horah!". So... it wasn't a clean Flash file, and the LOST people know by now that we decode these Flash files. Thus, it is simply degligence on their part.

Unless, of course, as some prostrate, this is evidence of a loser either another bad hacker or someone unrelated to the game messing with us with poor style and effort.

Still, my last find about the new day around Fiji intrigues me. (not to mention the addition of being able to change the text is different and new from the example countdown. thus, it must mean something. Either that, or negligence on their part again.)

Anyone can decompile flash... it doesn't take much to learn, you can get freeware to help... it's no extraordinary feat. Decompiling the flash can, besides showing us a side of things we weren't intended to see, give us false leads... (i.e. the image "behind" Alvar Hanso.)

Anyone can look under the community chest cards too, but when you are playing Monopoly, you assume the position of a real estate tycoon... those community chest cards are not cards when you are in that role, but they are, in fact, fate.

When we play this ARG, we are to assume a role in this Lost universe, and believe everything involved in it...

Call me old fashioned, but I choose not to decompile the flash... I choose to play the game correctly and discover clues in the manner in which they were intended to be found, and no, I don't believe they want us to do this to find clues.

What clues have there been that required us to decompile a flash file to reveal? Give me ANY clue and I'll tell you that you've got a point. There's none. It's cheating.

I prefer to be completely absorbed by this game... to let myself drown in the Lost universe that they've created for us and play the game the way they've intended us to play it.

But, hey... to each his/her own.

This is my last post on this. You know where I stand, and it's killing my buzz...

I find it hard to believe that there is nothing more to it than waiting for persephone.

There are so many reasons for thinking that P did not write that message including the fact that there DOES seem to be another hacker from a previous clue (recent one at that) "Persephone, if you can read this, I know who you are.".

Sounds like the other hacker might be trying to impersonate Persephone.

ALSO
Someone mentioned that the flash file from the karupa site did not allow you to enter text into the boxes. A teaser or something important? A reason I think the karupa site may have been good site to find.

um... When the clock gets down to 0 when you actually fully wait, the time around Fiji will hit midnight. So, it is a countdown to a new day (aka. also 6/8/06, which the Speaker says is his birthday) in the area around Fiji(aka. where we think the island is).

A second person posted this:

When I tried it, my clock stopped at 0.096 miliseconds. I'm not entirely sure why mine was different

A third posted this:
mine stopped at .004 milliseconds...

And a forth posted these findings:

Hmm, must be nothing. I tried and got .018, .022, and .033. Seems to be pretty random. Darn.

i agree that this discovery of the 'copied' flash is probably a sign that this 'new hacker' isn't P. this could be an example of the flash decomposition perhaps giving us a clue?

Personally, i have only learned about flash since I started playing this game and I completely understand how it almost seems like 'cheating' yourself. (Acutally, this whole website is kinda like 'cheating' - but I probably wouldn't have discovered half of the clues without it!)
Then again, TPTB have gotten much smarter about the flash as the days have gone on - not being so obvious as they once were with clues left in the files. Which is a good thing - everyone needs to be challenged!

To quote someone: "I say, bring 'em on!" J/K! Namaste!

The last message from P (or whoever it is) reads "I'm gonna need more time" and if you put those words into an anagram solver you get a countless amount of different words. I'm trying to sort out any words with actual meaning to the game, but I thought I'd let everyone in here know.

the possibility that this is another hacker is an intriguing one.

In fact, there's very little evidence that the individual who hacked the IGA page is persephone (other than the fact that persephone.thf.org has the <--standby--> message).

The reason I think it *is* persephone is that the alternate hacker has no real motive for posting this message. The only indication of the counter-hacker was a message directly addressed to P. Why would the counter-hacker want to contact us? And why would they post a random countdown?

This is clearly a message to us to wait for what looks to be a clue that will be released tomorrow. Since the only hacker that has been attempting to communicate to us is Persephone, I think the assumption that she is the one who posted the timer is a reasonable one to make.

Oh, and to those who believe that the timer is in some way related to the island in LOST, I think the game makers have clearly attempted to distinguish this ARG from the Lost show. Esspecially since Lost is between seasons we'll probably enjoy the game a whole lot more if we take it on its own merits and not in relation to the show's plotlines.

hi all, i'm new to posting. this game has completely taken over my life.

i think the question we should be asking is not whether or not it's Persephone but what reasons would there be for a sudden change in font and grammar? as you've all noticed, this whole affair is extremely professionally done, and part of the success of an "alternate reality" depends upon keeping that consistency. (It's what we writers call "voice.") I think it's safe to assume, with the undoubtedly zillions of dollars and countless hours being poured into this thing, that any decision involving fonts, appearance, "voice" or whatnot is intentional.

I think there may be a reason for the "other hacker" to be doing this. It is maybe a long shot but maybe she wants to impersonate as persephone to get information from us about something. I am having difficulty in trying to vision in my head how TPTB would manage to encorporate something like this successfully into the game but I find the idea VERY intriguing.

On top of that we have many clues telling us the next clue will come on the 8th, speakers b-day, DJDan pod cast everyone is paitent except belly who claims we will see something new today. 2 hours later we have the clock...

I believe that it was Persephone and not this "other hacker". I think we should expect something good tomorrow... she's got something in store for us that's worth waiting another day for... sadly, I think this means that we only get 1 clue this week, but I think it'll be worth while. We'll just have to wait and see.

This makes no sense, but I love how analitical (sp) we all are! Like comparing the wording and grammar from previous posts, etc.. LIke the frakin CIA! But I have got it figured out. Joops isn't only a simian. "They have crossed the barrier between simians and humans" is what is in a previous clue from like the national center for disease control. And stayed on the joop page after the whole "breaking strain" message you send joop, and the image of that black dude was REALLY strong. Therefore, I conclude that Joop is really part human, part simian, therefore able to live for twice as long as a human/simian thing. Yeah, so that's My DJ DAN type of theory/conspiracy thing. I'll post a screenshot later, since I closed the screen and have to redo it.
But here's what I think we should have in mind as we are dismantling THF:

~What does HansoFoundation have to do with the island?
~What ties does THF have to the Dharma Initiative?
~What does Persephones have to do with LOST (Penny??)
~What does Joop have to do with anything with LOST?
~What ties does Alvar Hanso have to the island and/or the Losties AND/OR Oceanic Flight #w/e?

Remember, when cracking the code, don't forget to try and tie everything back to LOST, because this will be our downfall should we forget!

Alright, this will be long and purely theoretical, so if you don't go in for that - save yourself some time.

Here's what I believe the status is (some game, some show, I still believe the two are meant to play off of each other): THF did initially fund the DHARMA Initiative. Those scientists who signed up for DHARMA did so with benevolent intentions, but found out that THF was using their findings in not so benevolent ways. They then "rebelled" (for lack of a better word) against THF and hid their work/findings from THF. In turn, THF cut their funding. Our beloved P is either somehow linked to the DHARMA folks, or is sympathetic towards them and is trying to bring THF's true character to light. There is another hacker following in P's footsteps and either trying to help or hinder her work, we really don't know yet. This in mind, at this point I don't think we can really know who to trust, what their motivations are, or where they are trying to 'lead' us.

Sorry for the rant.

Let's get sloshed for the next 19 or so hours. :)

You mentioned a little bit ago that the podcast has poofed and the mp3 is there now.

Now, did anyone think that the video with the podcast dialogue was intentional by DJ Dan? If so, I'd say that all DJ Dan did was create a podcast. -Then- Persephone made a video with the podcast audio voicing her opinion on how DJ Dan has sold out.

To my point: Persephone has indeed been caught. I believe that their removal of her input is a sign of the times. A podcast stripped of her thoughts. Perhaps the Hanso site will revert to a safe and fine website after the countdown, clearly erasing all of Persephone's damage. Maybe this is the end of our leader.

I always imagined Persephone as being an employee at THF that saw more than they realized. This would explain her rushed messages - didn't want to get caught at work? Much like many of you... hehe

I'm not completely convinced that this new message isn't from Persephone. All we have to go on is bad grammar. Couldn't we just take it at her word - she's tired and overworked? Although, I must admit that I like the idea of a new hacker.

Here's a wild idea of mine: The countdown is one hack, the message is a hack of that hack. ie: somebody gave us a countdown and Persephone is telling us "oh crap, I'm running out of time"

I told you it was a wild idea.. :)

I see readding posts that another possible theory is coming. It is something that I had thought of too.
Maybe the reason for the flash and rushed message is that Persephone has been scrutinised and she finds it hard to get in touch. When worse maybe she has been captured/being held and Even worse drugged/tortured for information of some kind. This would explain the rushed stuff.

And maybe the timer is for when her plan will take place somehow.

I still think the fact that you can type into the flash file is important. See previous posts.

wizardry,

I would be *very* impressed and happy if this message was an effort of the counter-hacker. For all of her revelations, Persephone is hardly a trustworthy narrator. I think having two warring hackers giving us different insights and information would make the game much more complex and interesting. Not only would we have to decode the clues, but, from them try to infer motives and how/why they are linked to THF.

The "evidence" that this is an alternate hacker, is the different font and the different tone of the message. Circumstantial at best.

The evidence that this is Persephone is that the persephone.thf.org site changed to the message standby and the "style" of hacking is similar to persephone's (i.e. the eerie music, being logged in as breaking strain, breaking through by hitting a link). Additionally, persephone is the only in-game indicudual who has attempted to contact us thus far. This evidence isn't much, but until more comes our way, I think the safe money is on the fact that this is persephone and she's just sleepy.

You can click on your name, scroll down and on your left you will see a place for creating the avatar.
You must first make sure the picture you want is on the web somewhere. If it is a picture of your own then you must upload it to a site (for free) using a site like www.photobucket.com. and then using the link to the photo create the avatar.

Hope this helps.

Truth Tempest-

Hate to burst your bubble but deuterium *is* hydrogen. It's a stable and rare isotope of hydrogen that has a nucleus of one proton and one neutron (most hydrogen has a nucleus of just a single proton)

It should be noted that heavy water is different from normal water, esspecially in reactions within biological systems. In particular heavy water seems to arrest mitosis (i won't get technical, but plant/animal cells have a really hard time dividing in heavy water). plant seeds won't germinate and animals who are given heavy water in small doses tend to become sterile, and if forced to drink only hard water will usually die in a week.

Interestingly enough, Bacteria have no trouble surviving in heavy water.

Oh and to those of you who are worried, heavy water is very, very rare (I think there's is one "heavy" hydrogen isotope for every 8,000 or so), and it would take a *lot* of heavy water to cause any of these nasty effects in a human being.

drpunk,

I'm with you in regards to Perseophone being an employee of THF. In one of the clues where she reveals some of the board's corruption she says "I've always worked for criminals and always will". I am quite certain (at least as certain as I am about anything in this game) that Persephony is or has been a seditious employee of THF.

That said, I think the Experience is only tangentially related to the show. So far, the only link has been Alvar Hanso and the Hanso foundation. Until given some clear reference to a character or major plot point of the show I'm going to keep the two separate.

Wizardry,

I tinkered with flash years ago. As I remember it, you could create text boxes with default text (similar to HTML text boxes that have a word in them that blank when you click in them). It's possible these text boxes may be used at a later date, but equally possible it was just lazy flash coding.

But I got hte impression (because of "horah" that the swf was essentially just copied (unless TPTB saw a connection with "horah" and decided to go with it) therefore apart from changing the countdown to their own time (and not Christmas) would their have been any cause to add text places here?

lol. No worries, rhettoric. I knew the difference, I just always felt D2O was a replacement of water. Though technically water, it doesn't act exactly the same.

Thus, theories that it generally refers to the modification of something or something looking like one thing but being another. I'm sure the "heavy water" clue probably just has some sort of dastardly nuclear arms deal side story or something. But for the moment, we can speculate, right?

Don't forget that there are quite a few text entry fields on THF website that aren't being utilized by the experience yet. Will they become important later? Quite possibly. Are they important now? well, that's up to you :)

Does anyone know of a good blog to post some info on the Bad Twin? I have come across a few but none that are read frequently anymore. Found a few things in the book worth mentioning.

There are some action scripts going on in that .swf that are pretty crazy. I mean, using insanely large numbers for seemingly no purpose. It is rather strange.

Actually, it is really weird. When you look at all the components... this .swf is a ton more complex than the original countdown it ripped off. I mean, it leaves in a few pieces here and there like the Horah! and some black pieces, but the amount of action scripts is a lot larger, and the frame count is huge. The text boxes seem to either be empty or related to a number sequence of some sort. It really is oddly complex for how shoddy it seems at first.

Maybe it was supposed to come off as unimpressive but actually be complex. This intrigues me.

Bad Twin stuff:

On page 43 3rd line: the "f" in facts is a different font. Not sure if it is just a cool smudge in my copy or if others have this too.

On page 44 7th paragraph 4th sentence: "I don't even know if want to know" Shouldn't there be an "I want to know" instead. (I am a teacher but not a grammer teacher hehe)

On page 45 This is the beginning of chapter 9. The first letter is bolded like all the other chapter's first letters but it looks like there are dots in the letter and quotation marks. I scanned it but do not know how to post it for everyone to see. No other chapter has this annomolly. (sp? man I suck)

Any ideas?

Well on a finishing note for today I would like to say this.

There has been so much research done on this whole Lost Experience stuff throughout this thing. It seems to me that it has taken many by storm and thanks to blogs like this, more and more people are getting involved. I think that this really will have been an experience for all of us and hopefully new games will evolve from it "BECAUSE OF US". We are breaking records here I am sure.

I think that it may be possible for people to think that the work being done here is meaningless. ie Stick to the clues and when it comes to researching all this off the cuff stuff (valnazetti, who is persephone and all the other unanswered stuff) there is no point. I think however that digging for all this background info means two things. When the bigger picture arises later in the game (hopefully we were on the right track) we will appreciate all the work done as a true understanding of the conclusion and also the feeling of a good job well done.

The fact is sticking to the clues (and getting through the game happily doing so) may well bring you to the end but will it be anywhere near as fulfilling. And could you truly comprehend what the experience is all about?

I am truly warmed to see so many newcomers tonight (and one in particular I like what they said (hanso careers change). Please post. ALL of you. We are making history and enjoying it at the same time.

I will now post my list of unanswered questions. I cannot think of any more titles (please let me know if you see anything missing. What would come under the titles I hope will be the undertaking of the new direction blog. Too much for one person.

Goodnight, thankyou, Peace and Namaste.

yeah, seems like printing errors to me.

Anyone else think THF's response to "Bad Twin" smacks of "Methinks the lady doth protest too much!"

If this allusion is a little too obscure (I have a habit of this sort of thing) this is a quote by Hamlet's mother when she is watching a play about a woman whose husband is burdered by her lover and then goes through an extreme denial of her complicity.

When Hanso categorically exclaims that the insinuations Bad Twin makes about THF are viscious and unfounded lies, one immediately wonders what the hell they are talking about. I mean, there wasn't anything bad in there

Someone else (belly maybe?) thinks that this is more about troup's attempts to uncover the valencetti equation than anything that's actually printed in Bad Twin.

Just as a point of reference, I thought that Gary Troup was the guy in the Lost Premier who is sucked into the jet turbine engine and killed. Perhaps it was his agent which is why he had the Bad Twin proof?

! I know this has all been talked about before...guess I'm just brain drooling.

Who is the Mole?

We all know they are looking at what we are doing and talking about, and most likely, there are a few actually interacting. Sewing seeds where they need to be sewn.

Toss seeds into the air. One may hit the road. Another, a stone. But one may just hit grass and sprout.

rhettoric - For some reason I seem to recall that one of the recent podcasts told us that Gary Troupe is important to us because of what he can tell us about the Valenzetti equation, so I think you're on the right track for that.

I know I've said this before, but with more people starting to point in the direction of the Valenzetti thing, I strongly suggest you read the Wiki entry on Pierre Teilhard de Chardin and his Omega Point. Specifically in the Omega Point theory, it talks of a physicist who presumably had worked out an "end of the world" type theory that I have yet to find. The physicist was Frank J. Tipler who calculates out to "the Big Crunch"; pretty much the opposite of "the Big Bang". I found this wiki article particularly interesting since it lists the occurences of the Omega Point in Pop Culture (i.e. Isaac Asimov and Mr. Bungle). If nothing else, it's interesting reading for the next 18 hours or so...
