Clue #61 - Rachel Blake Copenhagen Post 05 & RoT Update

Rachel Blake Update:
Rachel posted again. And she linked us to a new website where she apparently has hidden clues to another video. Head over to 43things.com and go to Rachel's List of 43 Things. You'll notice that goals 4 8 15 16 23 and 42 all contain just one word: truth, safe, reckon, copenhagen, alvar, sumo. It also stands out that goal 43 is "Have a refreshing beverage".

This led us to sublymonal.com, where we entered "truth safe reckon copenhagen alvar sumo" into the login box. This action opens up a second login box. Remembering Rachel's blog conversation with Mel0drama (Post 01), Rachel said: "Me: Cool. Gotta go. I've got 43 things to do to stop their 'better tomorrow'"

Entering "better tomorrow" in the new sublymonal login box takes us to http://www.sublymonal.com/_hidden/ . Look in folder 48 (48 hours reference from ROT Board) for the video. (also on YOUTUBE). Also in folder 48, we find MelODrama's first reveal about Dr. Hackett, a confidential memo.

Linmoo found Mittlewerk's island in google earth. The pictures are of islands in Lake Superior in Ontario, Canada near Thunder Bay. The islands in the picture with names are Edward Island, St. Ignace Island, Simpson Island, and Wilson Island.

Thanks to Stash, Justin, & arkay for emailing. Thanks to Richard for posting in the comments. This was apparently solved by a crew in an unfiction chatroom.

Retrievers of Truth Update:
There is more chat going on in the Retrievers of Truth Message Board.

Thanks to Chris, Bob, MSTK, Gary, Lainie, and Vijay for emailing first!

VIDEO FOUND

The video has been found through a great joint effort in the unfiction.com chat room:

Following Rachel's link to 43things.com, we quickly found a user named RBlake, who had 43 goals:

http://www.43things.com/person/RBlake

It was noticed that goals 4 8 15 16 23 and 42 all contain just one word:

truth safe reckon copenhagen alvar sumo

Also, goal 43 is "Have a refreshing beverage"

This led us to sublymonal.com, where we entered "truth safe reckon copenhagen alvar sumo"

This silenced sublymonal and opened up a second login box

DanteIL noticed that at the end of her blog conversation with Mel0drama, Rachel said: "Me: Cool. Gotta go. I've got 43 things to do to stop their "better tomorrow""

Entering "better tomorrow" takes us to

http://www.sublymonal.com/_hidden/

Look in folder 48 for the video

j7chico, I don't think it could be that island. It's north of Aus, not north-east where the plane roughly should be. Plus that is west of PNG and the freewebs site that had info on Black Rock that Rachel linked to said the Black Rock said east of PNG (though PNG only became PNG in the 70's... dates the book to rather recently if they tried to make it accurate in that sense). SPOILER? (Desmond also seemed to think sailing west would get him to Fiji)

Then again, maybe they were waaay more off-course than they thought, LOL.

Look, all I'm saying is that if they didn't know who you were before, you're giving them an awfully good reason to figure you out. And, I don't get it.
Why are you putting yourself at risk like this? Why are you doing this, Rachel? Who are you?

A couple of things to consider:

1) aware that some people might not be caught up through the end of season two, i will go ahead and say to those wondering about the "lagoon" on the island map - we have seen that kelvin and desmond used it to store the Elizabeth - in the second season finale.

2) mercator projections - rachel goes out of her way to say that the maps are not to scale and distorted - my first thought, looking at the images of the map, is that they are laid out on a grid. a grid will of course distort images of land - anyone remember that episode of West Wing where the Cartographers for Social Justice were going on and on about how the mercator projection favors the northern hemisphere, and makes certain countries look larger than others, and so on and so on. unsure why rachel makes special mention of it.

3) there is a small island off the coast of the main island - is this where the pala ferry carries henry gale and the others? is that what he refers to as "home"?

4) we're assuming that the island on the photos is THE island. i wonder if it's safe at this point to make that leap simply based on Hanso's involvement in the slave trade in the south pacific and some grainy satellite images. plus, recall that pen widmore has "found" the island in 2004. we know that widmore has at least some affiliation with HF, so, are pen's efforts independent of HF's? did pen revolt against her father? if pen "found" the island in 2004, then is mittlewerk looking at the results of her research? if they're working at cross purposes, then HF is two years behind an independent agent (pen). does pen know something that HF doesn't? is it possible that she is actively looking for the island itself, rather than for desmond? what are pen's/widmore's/hf's intentions with regard to the island? there are so many characters and elements and motivations to juggle, it seems like there will never be a single answer, which adds to the appeal of the game, to say nothing of the show.

5) rachel's newest post only intensifies my suspicions of her. this is what, the second or third time she has physically thrust herself dangerously close to McIntyre and Mittlewerk. please tell me that mittlewerk, mcintyre, cctvs at these archives that she keeps sitting outside of in plain sight - please tell me i say, that she can continue to have these encounters and not yet have aroused suspicion. it's just curious, if not increasingly implausible. if she's looking to be goaded into stowing away on the ship, and actually does it - again, it's just not reasonable that she could manage all of this stalking and espionage on her own. she has to be funded or working for someone with the means to orchestrate her movements.

6) for the president of a multinational corporation, mittlewerk in the video is extremely awkward. he freezes upon bumping into rachel, and it is only after being harrassed by rachel for a while that the other guy (henchman? bodyguard? another guy who just happens to be standing around outside the archive?) steps in and sends her on her way. something about these encounters just does not sit right with me. it's too convenient - these videos and escapades seem staged.

7) rachel's videos - they have all of these jump cuts and zooms and blips and the like - as though they were The Swan video. are we to believe that when she's not bouncing around being cute, three feet behind a major corporate player, persistently and blatantly hacking megacorporate websites, and putting herself, her face, and her intentions all over the internet, that she's cutting and editing her own web-cam posts? again, for one person, whose means and resources we are absoultely in the dark about, is rachel someone that we can trust implicitly?

I'm surprised Rachel had the ovaries to slam into Mittelwerk like that. Pretty cool. Color me skeptical, though, but I don't think we're going to find the island that easily. For all we know, they could have mocked that up in Photoshop and printed it out. I'm just saying... Well, Rachel really wants us to find the island. However, I kind of doubt that it's a "real" island that's on Google Earth or Encarta or whatever. If we find the island, the show could be over! Ha! Ha! Maybe there's an in-game map site, or an in-game place (on the web) that holds the key to the island we seek.

Blogger Benthic said...

Well, having just finished re-skimming over the comments, do we have any real leads to possible islands that might match the phycial description and location of it? I think it's going to be so hard to find because of the size, generic shape, and the fact that the clues to where it might be are so wide-stretched and vague. Between Australia and Los Angeles... 100 miles off-course from Fiji... Shipping routes, etc... *McSigh* I think it's going to take more than one night to find this place. Or maybe it's just meant to keep us occupied until her next blog when she has a new lead to it's locale.

Yeah, probably, interrobang!. Could be off the coast of Equat Guennia for all we know.
And pardon my skepticism. I'm a natural skeptic and cynic.
We need to compile a large list of what we know about the island's location.

- Within 1000 miles of the flight line between Sydney, Australia and Los Angeles, California.
- Diverting from the flight path, the island lies somewhat towards the direction of the island of Fiji.
- Unnaturally occurring tides, storms, and climate could offset location of island from the equator.
- EQUAT could be assumed that the island lies near or on the equator.

HELP ADD TO THE LIST.

Thanks, lexis b. Rachel said that she's depending on us to find the island, which leads me to think there won't be any more info from her directly. Unless she tapes Mittelwerk in an upcoming video revealing something to help us in the right direction. Letyourcompassguideyou might be a start with what we have already. I think TPTB dropped this on us late on Friday, so we'd keep "busy" all weekend. The next piece of the island puzzle is still to come...

mochi, I've been thinking about this a bit recently. IIRC the plan was flying for 6 hours before turning back and flying 2 hours towards Fiji. While I remember coming across a real-world site that showed a flight path from Sydney to LA, it didn't have nice markers of the planes position every hour of the flight :-D In the finale there were some more details given... sailing due west for a certain amount of time should get you to Fiji. I've got my head stuck in looking for the original source of that Persephone pic, otherwise I'd go off on this tangent again

mini, there you go again... OK, so we know it's not Isle de la Lost. Nice work Linmoo! Way to ignore Rachel's "it's near the equator" theory. You can "find" it yourself by going to going Earth and typing in the co-ordinates '48.37N 88.75W'.

Interesting note about the Canadian island compliments of LostPedia..."Of the area, the only major location appears to be the 'Silver Islet', a small town site which was both the first Ontario silver mining site and at one time the largest in the world (1870-1884)."

I don't think there is anything in the Starwars link. Referencing Starwars has become an element of everyday life in itself and anyone that is a starwars fan is probably prone to making star wars comments every now and then. If they were going to drop hints I think they'd pick something less common.

I'm still wondering if it was the water that was interesting to Mittlewerk in that map and not the actual islands. Something could be in the water, perhaps sunken? Possibly the ship modifications are to allow for searching that part of the water. Perhaps the translation wasn't entirely accurate and ship was actually sea going vessel and is actually a submarine. That could tie in perhaps with the shark picture where someone said there was a sub in the background (although personally I never saw it myself). I don't reckon you could take a sub into just any dock, especially if it was say, a stolen Korean military sub?

Project Sumo - SUMO-signalering in planten.
Plants are able to detect stress, e.g. pathogens, in their environment. Recognition of stress leads to activation of signalling pathways in the cell, in which specific protein modifications play an important role. These modifications, of which SUMO is a new and still only little explored form, change the function of the signalling protein. In this project the role of SUMO in the plant defence against pathogens will be studied.

The connection with Lake Superior is likely the shipwrecks dotting the coastline. At the turn of the centure the Great Lakes were a major shipping route, and to this day there are many shipwrecks along the coasts of Lake Superior and Lake Huron.

If Mittlewerk is researching old shipping lanes this would be a possible area for a sunk ship.

Wer·ner's syndrome (vĕr'nərz)
n.
A hereditary disease of young adults that is characterized by short stature, early graying, cataracts, vascular disorders, and generally premature aging and death.

Or

Werner Syndrome is a rare progressive disorder that is characterized by the appearance of unusually accelerated aging (progeria). My husband and I took the kids to that mystery spot last year. Pretty cheesy but the kids liked the gift shop.

Mittlewerk = Hanso, the logical extension of Joop is keeping humans alive much longer than they should be, and would explain why we can't find Hanso.

Also, wasn't Black Rock a slaver ship? If so, it wouldn't be a likely spot for a shipwreck in Lake Superior, as didn't slaver ships tend to go south? If so they would be more likely to dock at a southern port of trade rather than traverse the entire Mississippi to get to a destination. Also, how old was Black Rock? Shouldn't it predate Great Lake shipwrecks?

ZKY...wanna hear something odd geographically about Thunder Bay? There are a series of Mesas, or smaller versions of plateus...that make up what looks like a person when viewed from above...they call this person, The Sleeping Giant...almost peed myself when I heard of something called the sleeping giant being on the island till I realized it had to be viewed from above. (you know, that crazy foot formation in the finale)
