Clue #64 - Rachel Blake Iceland Post 01

Rachel's made her latest post on her blog and is now in Iceland!

UdonPaul331, from her comments, posted that he is from Vigi Benoffski's home city where Vigi (the mathematician from yesterday's post) teaches at a local university and found a memo laying on one of his professor's desks, which he posted on his blog. The memo said Vigi would be speaking on Pattern Theory in Australia, and would be unavailable, but the dates he would be gone to Australia overlap with the day he died in the fire at the Vik Institute!

Also, she's posted her latest video! This time it's buried in the Gary Troup website. She convinced Armand Zander to meet with her! Either navigate yourself to find it, or click the links below to access it directly.

There were 2 choices for downloading the video at Garytroup.net, but they've been removed. However, thanks to "matt the pale" in our comments, you can watch it on YouTube!

In addition, some people have received messages from DSLerator (from the RoT site), directing them to the MySpace page of a Mandrake Wig. We aren't quite sure what to think of this yet, but be sure to check it out if you haven't already.

Theory, but needs flushing out. As mentioned earlier (Sorry, don't remember who brought it up) the Savants at VIK are being used to calculate advanced mathematical formulas. It is commonly accepted that the human brain is the fastest computer on the planet. If VIK has found a way to "Harness" the mental computing capabilities on these unfortunates whose higher congnitive functions are not fully operable, perhaps they are developing the first "organic" computers?

If the "human computer" theory has any merit, then perhaps they are also working to develop an "organic computer network". If they succeed in this, it could be the first step towards the noosphere theorised by Pierre Teilhard de Chardin. free1978: from How Stuff Works:
Your brain is made up of about one trillion cells with 100 trillion connections between those cells. We might take a rough estimate and say it is handling 10 quadrillion instructions per second, but it really is hard to say.

In the 2004 TOP500 list, which ranks supercomputers by speed, the top three supercomputers are as follows:

1. IBM's BlueGene/L - 70.72 teraflops
2. NASA's Columbia - 51.87 teraflops
3. NEC's Earth Simulator - 35.86 teraflops

Seventy trillion operations per second is pretty fast...but it's still not as fast as your brain.

So, with these numbers, the human brain can still process approx. 1,500 times faster than IBM's BlueGene/L

I think the idea of using the autistic savants is not tha they might be "faster" than computers, it's that they leave no records. If THF was trying to work on the Valenzetti Equation with computers it would leave a "paper trail", using people's minds to figure something out is definitely more secure for them.

free1978 - any type of processing eventually breaks down to "on or off". Wether it's language, visual, or artistic, the concept is all the same. Computational power is measured by the number of binary switches available for simultaneous processing. Whether or not the average human is capable of out-performing a computer is not the question, I know that the answer is "no". The point I want to make is that the human brain has more computing power than any computer in existence today.

I sure hope we do get something a little more concrete today as this latest one doesnt really say anything specific. Just more theorising.

On the brain vs computer thing. Computers are perfect for number crunching because they are very logical and have a simple procedure to follow. Brains are way too complex to follow the same logical pattern. However - I believe that autistics are (or can be different). They do have a lot more of a knack for thinking like computers allowing for complex things to be researched. I would say that the brain power of these autistic savants would far surpass that of any computers. And if networking was involved in some way then the power would go up considerably. (Reminds me of the Borg collective in Star Trek).

Anyway. The point to this is that I do believe the autistic savants are being used this way. Probably to try and figure out the valenzetti equation.

Just my 2 cents.

Does anyone else feel like we've just taken a sharp ninety-degree turn?

I don't know what I was expecting, but I guess I was anticipating the words "ship" or "map" or "island" - or geez, ALVAR HANSO - to factor into what's happened at the Vik Institute.

Definitely not an enclave of world-renowned mathematicians.

I've emailed Zander - he seemed pretty spooked at the restaurant, but maybe he'll come around and give us something more to go on.

In the meantime, hit me with your comments. If you have even a CLUE as to why Mittelwerk would have these mathematicians hiding in a mental hospital, running some arcane equation through the brains of a bunch of autistic savants, post about it. And while you're at it - take a stab at the hieroglyphics.

How can we make the NUMBERS fit in with the glyphs?

6/28/2006 02:27:00 PM
Blogger oxillini said...

Well, with respect to the hieroglyphs being used in an equation, if you take a look at pattern theory, one of it's fundamental tenets is that it is compositional (source: wikipedia). If you use glyphs to represent smaller building blocks of an equation or model, then you accomplish two things. 1) You compartmentalize information. You keep any one person from knowing all of the equation or simulation. 2) Your equation, model or theory is made up of building blocks which have long since been proven to be true. This can make proof of the overall equation, model, simulation or theory more simplistic.

Using this information, why did Mittlewerk choose hieroglyphs to represent the building blocks? Why not letters or greek letters or happy faces or any number of other symbols?

belly: well, one possibility is each "building block" is well suited to a particular hieroglyph's meaning in egyptian culture. 2 of the 5 represent health, 1 represents evil, 1 death, 1 "quail chick" (birth?) and speculaiton is that the 6th represents child. So don't all of these factors, or variables have connotations for predicting when population=0?

What if they do have the Valenzetti equation, but are altering the variables to try and determine what can prevent/postpone the end of the world? If they are using the symbols as variables, perhaps they are representing data that THF is trying to change with their programs. For instance, when Valenzetti first wrote the equation, the world was going to end in 2020 (hypothetically); however, due to social and scientific means, data has changed. These new variables are put into the equation and the Basement Gang over VIK is "recalculating" armageddon, or whatever you want to call it.

Interesting, and this leads me to another what if....

What if they have the equation and they are trying to stop Armageddon (they genuinely believe they are doing all these evil things fro the greater good). In Control Theory, the notion of stability comes up. When a system is imprpoperly designed, a slight perturbance in input results in the output either going to zero or simply exploding. What if THF know this and are looking for the right set of parameters such that perturberances in input (i.e. increase in birth rate, spread of diseases) do not cause catastrophic instabilities in output (i.e. population explosion or extinction)? Just one more possibility

I'm no expert, but I don't think we can figure out the Valenzetti Equation based on the info we have now. More will probably be forthcoming. The question really is: How does the VE fit in with the rest of the story? Things like: Mittelwerk's island, the modified ship, the antennas, the shark, the Dharma Initiative and the hatches, the missing organs, where's Alvar Hanso

...etc. I think all roads lead to the Valenzetti Equation, and everything will eventually tie-in together down a long and interesting path.

One quick comment,
Has no one heard of the "Rain Man.' He is a real life, living breathing supercomputer. He is the guy that the movie was based on. He remembers everything ever read, heard, and seen. He is also very good at mathematical equations and has worked with an audience. Last year at a confrence for autism he calculated a math problem that was giving Nasa scientists a run for their money for almost ten years (something about the gravitational distress caused by a star system with three suns) in under a second, it did however take him 27 minutes to write it out. He started with the answer and worked backwards to the question so that they knew he had the answer faster than any computer could ever have hoped for.
Second the human autistic brain is far more superior to any computer simply because it does not comprehend false information, when an autistic savant learns something incorrectly, than learns it correctly they practically dissolve the wrong information from their minds. It no longer exists to them and they very rarely make mistakes. Computers are programmed by people who don't always have all the facts and therefor can always be wrong.
The human mind is faster and better then anything we have yet created and will be until they put a brain in a CPU.

And I too believe that Alvar hanso is in hideing with the equation that Mittlewerk wants so badly. He is a reluse "Living in seclusion" away from the foundation since he knows what kind of people are in charge there.

I mentioned earlier in the chat room that I thought the "Your" word that was given in AIM discussion wasn't an actual word to put into this ROT clue but another hint to a word. I still don't think the first word was Welcome either. Translating Wilkomen isn't much of a hint challenge. But the fact that it isn't in English perhaps is, which is why I thought the multi-cultural advertising campaign "Realize" may be the actual word. Now anyway, the Aim post on the ROT site has the word "OUR" in capital. This is interesting because when I went to the front page looking for where the hint "Your" could take me I noticed the "Tour" in the corner. I thought it may be there, and interestingly it took me to the video page, going to the website linked to that the first words that come up are about Tranformative movies. Which reminded me of the hints someone was mentioning earlier about "More then meets your eyes", which is of course a transformers reference. So that all seems to make sense. So, anyway, I think the first two words are not "Welcome Your" but "Realize Transform".

This is very interesting. It might relate to the Life Extension Project and missing organs and good ole Joop being 105. Maybe THF thinks if we are immortal Armagedon won't occur. Maybe that's why the Others are so interested in babies/children so much is because they can't have any.

Trying to catch up on posts...Just a quick comment on people with autism...
dedjezter has it right when speaking about autistic savants and how their brains work- like computers. 007surge- autism does not develop late in life- don't know where that info came from. In order to be considered autistic, the DSM-IV criteria says that the symptoms are present by something like 5 years old. Some people don't actually get diagnosed until adulthood, but the symptoms and characteristics are always there in childhood if you know what to look for...doubtful that anyone who would be a considered an autistic savant would ever be able to serve in the military. I have a lot of knowledge on autism- I have 2 sons who are on the autistic spectrum- (although neither are savants).

aneilio76-it is a characteristic of people with autism to repeat random information that they have heard over and over again (Rain Man did this in the movie). It's called echolalia. So I think that is why someone asked if Leonard could be a savant. However, if he were autistic, it would be very unlike someone with autism to come out and make those other comments regarding the numbers- almost too conversational for someone who was be a savant. I don't think Leonard was/is autistic.

I think it's safe to assume the first word is Welcome. Although obvious if we're talking some really long password chain it's worth remembering the German.

I've been a little thrown off because for some reason I thought it was more cryptic then it really was. I think mostly because I've wasted too much time scouring the pages of richerdeeperbroadband when in actual fact we've not even been required to glance at the page to see those words. I mean come on, how many web pages don't have "your" and "next" written somewhere, or even "Welcome". "Video" has got to be incredibly common too. Really that website link has only hindered my investigation and not aided it in the slightest. I was also a little thrown off by the second hint because I had heard that the ROT guys gave someone "Your" directly. I only later found out it was in code. So I spent ages wondering what "your" could mean, when it was just "your". Grrr.

Okay, sorry if it sounds ranty, I'm at work and that makes me edgey. Lol.
