Clue #64 - Rachel Blake Iceland Post 01

Rachel's made her latest post on her blog and is now in Iceland!

UdonPaul331, from her comments, posted that he is from Vigi Benoffski's home city where Vigi (the mathematician from yesterday's post) teaches at a local university and found a memo laying on one of his professor's desks, which he posted on his blog. The memo said Vigi would be speaking on Pattern Theory in Australia, and would be unavailable, but the dates he would be gone to Australia overlap with the day he died in the fire at the Vik Institute!

Also, she's posted her latest video! This time it's buried in the Gary Troup website. She convinced Armand Zander to meet with her! Either navigate yourself to find it, or click the links below to access it directly.

There were 2 choices for downloading the video at Garytroup.net, but they've been removed. However, thanks to "matt the pale" in our comments, you can watch it on YouTube!

In addition, some people have received messages from DSLerator (from the RoT site), directing them to the MySpace page of a Mandrake Wig. We aren't quite sure what to think of this yet, but be sure to check it out if you haven't already.

Theory, but needs flushing out. As mentioned earlier (Sorry, don't remember who brought it up) the Savants at VIK are being used to calculate advanced mathematical formulas. It is commonly accepted that the human brain is the fastest computer on the planet. If VIK has found a way to "Harness" the mental computing capabilities on these unfortunates whose higher congnitive functions are not fully operable, perhaps they are developing the first "organic" computers?

If the "human computer" theory has any merit, then perhaps they are also working to develop an "organic computer network". If they succeed in this, it could be the first step towards the noosphere theorised by Pierre Teilhard de Chardin. Human brain is fastest in sense of how long it takes a signal to move from point A to point B in the brain...sort of akin to processor speed or clock speed on a comp...brain is much faster than that. It's just that computers can divide 70 digit numbers faster than most people generally can.

free1978: from How Stuff Works:
Your brain is made up of about one trillion cells with 100 trillion connections between those cells. We might take a rough estimate and say it is handling 10 quadrillion instructions per second, but it really is hard to say.

In the 2004 TOP500 list, which ranks supercomputers by speed, the top three supercomputers are as follows:

1. IBM's BlueGene/L - 70.72 teraflops
2. NASA's Columbia - 51.87 teraflops
3. NEC's Earth Simulator - 35.86 teraflops

Seventy trillion operations per second is pretty fast...but it's still not as fast as your brain.

So, with these numbers, the human brain can still process approx. 1,500 times faster than IBM's BlueGene/L

Autistic savants are often highly unstable. Autism is a form of sensory overload to your brain that it can't sort out.

They may be trying to recreate or solve the Valenzetti Equation with the use of savants, but I think the concept of a network is off the radar simply because of the instability of the autism.

Obviously if Benoffski didn't write that himself, then whoever did would need to be able to write Icelandic, or whatever language the memo is written in, but is there anything more to Kemical's assertion that "not just anybody" could have wrote it?

Since I'm from Polish I can tell you that I tried to find Benoffski but I failed. Looks like she never existed.
This memo lacks polish letters. I think the word 'wygladzic' (smoothen) doesn't belong there. It should be "wyglosić" (or wygłosić) which means "to speak", "give a speach".
Harcar's translation is very good though.
But like I said: I tried to find some info on Benoffski (I think it should be 'Beniowski' which is kinda popular name here in Poland... not like vigi though). Lost Experience team is getting sloppy

I think the idea of using the autistic savants is not tha they might be "faster" than computers, it's that they leave no records. If THF was trying to work on the Valenzetti Equation with computers it would leave a "paper trail", using people's minds to figure something out is definitely more secure for them.

free1978 - any type of processing eventually breaks down to "on or off". Wether it's language, visual, or artistic, the concept is all the same. Computational power is measured by the number of binary switches available for simultaneous processing. Whether or not the average human is capable of out-performing a computer is not the question, I know that the answer is "no". The point I want to make is that the human brain has more computing power than any computer in existence today.

6/28/2006 12:56:00 PM
Blogger wizardry_eas said...

I sure hope we do get something a little more concrete today as this latest one doesnt really say anything specific. Just more theorising.

On the brain vs computer thing. Computers are perfect for number crunching because they are very logical and have a simple procedure to follow. Brains are way too complex to follow the same logical pattern. However - I believe that autistics are (or can be different). They do have a lot more of a knack for thinking like computers allowing for complex things to be researched. I would say that the brain power of these autistic savants would far surpass that of any computers. And if networking was involved in some way then the power would go up considerably. (Reminds me of the Borg collective in Star Trek).

Anyway. The point to this is that I do believe the autistic savants are being used this way. Probably to try and figure out the valenzetti equation.

Just my 2 cents.

ok surge, I'm not in disagreement with you there, never was. I just think that it is probably the fact that there is no hard drive to hack, that makes the children a better option for looking at the valenzetti equation, not the actual computing power.

Post 001: Vik, Iceland

R (looking into camera, outside rental car): Smile, you're on pursecam. I'm about to meet with Armand Zander, director of the Vik Institute, where that mathemetician just happened to be visiting a mental patient. Wish me luck.

(car door shuts, transition to cafe table. Zander onscreen. Nationality unknown, heavy accent?)

Z: We are, of course, very strict about enforcing visiting hours, but (he laughs) mistakes do happen—

R: I know that's the story you practiced, and it's convincing, but I'm not from the Times, Doctor.

Z: I, uh... Who are you?

R: Just a concerned citizen--

Z: No, you have 3 seconds to come clean before I walk out.

(R is silent, Zander begins to get up but R grabs his hand.)

Yeah, thanks for posting that up, Matt Spent 20 minutes downloading the video and it was incomplete.

Let me just say that as soon as Zander mentioned 5 heiroglyphs I thought of the timer in the hatch too, but I wouldn't jump to find those symbols and start theorizing on them just yet. I get the impression that the producers may have underestimated us when they first designed this game and are now going off the seat of their pants.

Remember that they've already made mistakes in using stock images for hugh mcintyre, not to mention that they thought using a picture of lake superior for the "map" in mittlewerk's brief case wouldn't bite them in the rear.

Even if they intended to use those heiroglyphs at the time they filmed the episode, I doubt it is the case now.

Definitely not an enclave of world-renowned mathematicians.

I've emailed Zander - he seemed pretty spooked at the restaurant, but maybe he'll come around and give us something more to go on.

In the meantime, hit me with your comments. If you have even a CLUE as to why Mittelwerk would have these mathematicians hiding in a mental hospital, running some arcane equation through the brains of a bunch of autistic savants, post about it. And while you're at it - take a stab at the hieroglyphics.

6/28/2006 02:27:00 PM
Blogger oxillini said...

Well, with respect to the hieroglyphs being used in an equation, if you take a look at pattern theory, one of it's fundamental tenets is that it is compositional (source: wikipedia). If you use glyphs to represent smaller building blocks of an equation or model, then you accomplish two things. 1) You compartmentalize information. You keep any one person from knowing all of the equation or simulation. 2) Your equation, model or theory is made up of building blocks which have long since been proven to be true. This can make proof of the overall equation, model, simulation or theory more simplistic.

Using this information, why did Mittlewerk choose hieroglyphs to represent the building blocks? Why not letters or greek letters or happy faces or any number of other symbols?

6/28/2006 02:28:00 PM
Blogger Matt the Pale said...

Perhaps the numbers indicate the positions of the hieroglyphics in the main equation. Which means we're missing a hieroglyph.

Hi all

Finally managed to get on today and it looks like the work's been done already. Good thing the video is on YouTube as all Gary Troup sites have been pulled!

Just a few thoughts about the Autistic Savants:

007surge: it's been theorised for a while that Autistic Savants have been used at Vik for complex calculations, and was pretty much confirmed by a caller on DJ Dan. As a result it is entirely possible they're trying to rebuild the Valenzetti Equation (I've rebuilt it myself but I won't post in case I offend any Republicans or Bush supporters!).

Your idea about the human computer is a nice addition however, and I'd like to offer some info to back you up:

Your comparative stats are interesting, but remember that "flops" stands for "floating point operations per second". Computer processors have different performances for floating point and integer performance but it does give a good impression.

Think of it this way: according to your estimated figure, the human brain has a clock speed of 10 Petahertz (does it come dual-core?).

The thing is though the human brain isn't designed to be a calculator, whereas a computer is. The human brain must operate that fast to process operations to run the body, but it's nowhere near as fast at pure math calculations than a computer.

But, and here is the key, the Autistic brain isn't working according to design specs (for lack of a better term) and we've seen many times in fact and fiction how Autistics are phenomenal human calculators, often having fantastic memory recall too.

Now given the correct stimuli to keep the Autistic brain as happy and stable as possible, I should imagine it's entirely possible to develop a human computer (for example look at the Autistic character in "Cube" who calculates factors of 6-digit prime numbers in his head within seconds).

Now as they're also the theory going around about the Vik Institute developing controlled psychic abilities, I love the idea of organic networking! Develop telepathy and chain a number of Autistic computers!

I'll be back when I've watched the vid...

belly: well, one possibility is each "building block" is well suited to a particular hieroglyph's meaning in egyptian culture. 2 of the 5 represent health, 1 represents evil, 1 death, 1 "quail chick" (birth?) and speculaiton is that the 6th represents child. So don't all of these factors, or variables have connotations for predicting when population=0?

If the hierogylphs are just just as mathematical representatiosn for parts of an equation, their meaning in ancient egyptian doesn't have a whole lot of relevance. Unless, they were specifically chosen to have that meaning by THF or Mittlewerk or whoever.

What if they do have the Valenzetti equation, but are altering the variables to try and determine what can prevent/postpone the end of the world? Maybe the numbers directly correspond to each hieroglyphic. so during the system failure. the first hieroglyphic corresponds to the number "4", the next, "8" etc. except there are only 5 so who knows where 42 fits in.

Maybe the first 5 numbers are inputs into the equation, and 42 is the answer...if you don't put in the answer, the equation does what it's supposed to do (whatever that is) and produces the sounds and bright light...

Surge - nice idea. THF could also being trying to do research to place numbers to variables. For instance, they may need numerical values for life expectancy or anything to plug in and solve the equation. Their current research initiatives could be focused on finding out actual values for these variables and/or finding ways to alter the values themselves (i.e. extending life, etc.)

If the guy at the institution with Hurley was a savant then that means they've been working on this project for at least as long as when Hurley was in the hospital!

Interesting, and this leads me to another what if....

What if they have the equation and they are trying to stop Armageddon (they genuinely believe they are doing all these evil things fro the greater good). In Control Theory, the notion of stability comes up. When a system is imprpoperly designed, a slight perturbance in input results in the output either going to zero or simply exploding. What if THF know this and are looking for the right set of parameters such that perturberances in input (i.e. increase in birth rate, spread of diseases) do not cause catastrophic instabilities in output (i.e. population explosion or extinction)? Just one more possibility

I'm no expert, but I don't think we can figure out the Valenzetti Equation based on the info we have now. More will probably be forthcoming. The question really is: How does the VE fit in with the rest of the story? Things like: Mittelwerk's island, the modified ship, the antennas, the shark, the Dharma Initiative and the hatches, the missing organs, where's Alvar Hanso

...etc. I think all roads lead to the Valenzetti Equation, and everything will eventually tie-in together down a long and interesting path.

Checking out the wikipedia entry for pattern theory (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pattern_Theory) yields some interesting ideas. Pattern theory tries to create realistic representation of real phenomena (nuclear war destroying human life?) Also, these representations are made of more simple building blocks (perhaps the glyphs). Also, there is a group of mathematicians and neuroscience peopel at Brown studying this stuff led by an Ulf Grenander which just kinda reminds me of the group led by the De Groots at UMich that started the DHARMA initiative. Prolly just a coincidence.
Also worth a look is the section on Bayesian probability (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bayesian_probability)
According to wiki, this is "the tenet that the mathematical theory of probability is applicable to the degree to which a person believes a proposition. Bayesians also hold that Bayes' theorem can be used as the basis for a rule for updating beliefs in the light of new information —such updating is known as Bayesian inference." Perhaps similar to surge's idea that THF is looking to update variables in the VE.
Bayesian probability has also been used in Doomsday arguments (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doomsday_argument) This section discusses mathematical equations that attempt to predict a doomsday (although not nuclear related from what i can see). Bayesian stuff is integral to these arguments. Most interestingly, in the remarks section, it states that: "The step that converts N into an extinction time depends upon a finite human lifespan. If immortality becomes common, and the birth rate drops to zero, N will never be reached." Seemingly meaning that the extinction will not occur.

Sorry for this ginormous post (and just repeating a lot fo wiki), it was all just interesting and exciting to my geekiness. Anyone with a better math background than me that can elucidate this stuff for us?

This is one of the most interesting comments sections I have read. Loads of good stuff.

So it seems that for the moment things have come together very nicely. I saw so many instances above where certain things had been linked together. And of course - all of a sudden the meaning of the valenzetti equation seems to be exploding around us.
Thank you all for posting. Ace read.

I like the fact that a lot of the hard work done before to try and undertand things has made this part of the game so more enjoyable.

P in her final hack before THF shut down asked for Zander to be entered in the password box. Was this suggesting that she knew Zander was a good guy and wanted for us to seek him out. He will be our next ally. Hmm.

Loving it.

Frenchie - whoa, that totally ties in with the Bayesian idea that probability is dependent on belief. If you believe the numbers will work they do...or something liek that?....or my brain has just been fried by too much math?

you know with the equation thing headed full force now we might want to keep an eye on the following link

it is restricteed right now but that may change very soon...hope it will be the valenzetti equation!

In R's blog it looks like this:

***Rachel: Well, there you have it. I knew there was more to this.

19.40 Anyway, Iceland.

This place is gorgeous. Can't help but wish I were here under different circumstances. Course, if Mittelwerk knew I was here because of him, bet he'd say the same thing.***

What does the 19.40 mean?

One quick comment,
Has no one heard of the "Rain Man.' He is a real life, living breathing supercomputer. He is the guy that the movie was based on. He remembers everything ever read, heard, and seen. He is also very good at mathematical equations and has worked with an audience. Last year at a confrence for autism he calculated a math problem that was giving Nasa scientists a run for their money for almost ten years (something about the gravitational distress caused by a star system with three suns) in under a second, it did however take him 27 minutes to write it out. He started with the answer and worked backwards to the question so that they knew he had the answer faster than any computer could ever have hoped for.
Second the human autistic brain is far more superior to any computer simply because it does not comprehend false information, when an autistic savant learns something incorrectly, than learns it correctly they practically dissolve the wrong information from their minds. It no longer exists to them and they very rarely make mistakes. Computers are programmed by people who don't always have all the facts and therefor can always be wrong.
The human mind is faster and better then anything we have yet created and will be until they put a brain in a CPU.

And I too believe that Alvar hanso is in hideing with the equation that Mittlewerk wants so badly. He is a reluse "Living in seclusion" away from the foundation since he knows what kind of people are in charge there.

I mentioned earlier in the chat room that I thought the "Your" word that was given in AIM discussion wasn't an actual word to put into this ROT clue but another hint to a word. I still don't think the first word was Welcome either. Translating Wilkomen isn't much of a hint challenge. But the fact that it isn't in English perhaps is, which is why I thought the multi-cultural advertising campaign "Realize" may be the actual word. Now anyway, the Aim post on the ROT site has the word "OUR" in capital. This is interesting because when I went to the front page looking for where the hint "Your" could take me I noticed the "Tour" in the corner. I thought it may be there, and interestingly it took me to the video page, going to the website linked to that the first words that come up are about Tranformative movies. Which reminded me of the hints someone was mentioning earlier about "More then meets your eyes", which is of course a transformers reference. So that all seems to make sense. So, anyway, I think the first two words are not "Welcome Your" but "Realize Transform".

This is very interesting. It might relate to the Life Extension Project and missing organs and good ole Joop being 105. Maybe THF thinks if we are immortal Armagedon won't occur. Maybe that's why the Others are so interested in babies/children so much is because they can't have any.

Any guesses on the RoT video? I bet it has to do with those hints that we've been getting. DSLerator isn't on, anyone get an email about something on their site? I think that's what was given in the AIM conversations.

fenris, where did you see the link to the video page?

everyone else, for the RoT site, the clues we got were "first word in Cabaret", which is Wilkomen (translate that, I think it's Welcome) and then a bunch of numbers that spelled "your"
