Sorry for the lag gang. I think many of us in the states had 4th of July parties yesterday! Playing catch up at the moment...more to come!
wel, i am pretty certain, being in the medical feild, that he is headed to africa. you need all those shots there. also exchange transfusions are for newborn jaundice, sickle cell anemia( which only black people can get) and malaria. I believe TM has someone elses organs in him ie a black persons liver... and he is heading to africa to get a replacement since capetown seems the place for that.
2 theories.
1. alvar hanso and mittelwerk are the same person. he is just using hanso as a cover.
2. rachel's mother was some sort of patient at a hanso hospital, and died under one of their experiments.
djdan podcast was interesting too. how can he be at stonehenge and in sanremo at the same time.... guess pt is not djdan!

The BBC "THIS KNIFE" show clip featured some messed up audio. I played with it in Adobe Audition... I posted this in the last Comments section but thought it would be of some interest here.

Okay so I've played with the audio a little. I haven't put it up yet but here's my guess. I beginning is somebody singing.... "I Fooled Around, I Need to Love." The second piece of the audio is after the beep. It's what I can only guess as Korean, it's reversed. Followed by some human voice forward but covered by static and beeping. I isolated the audio and flipped around the Korean, but I don't have a filter that removes echo, so I don't know what else to do.

SPOILER THEORY......------------
I'm sure the KARMA imperitive is the Darhma Inititive.... but this discussion of cults plays into a theory I've held for a while. I believe that the Darhma Inititive, was a fully funded experiment, the doctors, scientists, and subjects were all willing. But at some point everyone involved lost their way and now everyone involved are not working under the Hanso Foundation, or under the orinal ramification of the experiment. What started out as science is spun wildly out of control. Not unlike Phillip Zimbardo's Stamford Prison experiment. That got so out of control it was shut down two days into it. But what if it had been allowed to go on? Could the Darhma Initivite be a more mundane experiment gone out of control??
Passafist - It is very possible that DJ Dan cannot or will not talk directly about Hanso or Dharma at this stage...IMHO...nice theory though...
About DJ Dan, I'm still interested in your theories, is he Peter Thompson?
And he talks about cults this time, possibly a reference to the Others?

Okay just got to say this -
Rachels new recording is so blatently recorded in a studio it's becomming a joke! It's in STEREO! Not just the kind of stereo you can get from a single stereo microphone either like you may get on a minidisc recorder (and I doubt you can get super discrete covert microphones that have any kind of real stereo field to them), it's quite distinct stereo too. I very much doubt you could get that quality while still maintaining any kind of covertness with the recording. Not to mention the fact that the rain and noir-esque sax solo (which I thought was cool btw) are blatently backing tracks added on later.
Come on production crew, this isn't rocket science to make this believable your just being downright sloppy! This is the kind of production I'd expect for a radio show, which is all well and good except for the fact this is an ARG not a radio show. It's actually like they've put effort into making it sleek and polished. I'm actually tempted to edit that audio to make it more believable as a covert recording. Seems pointless but I just want to time it and see how much effort it would have been for them to do it.
*sigh* Anyway, you never know it could add weight to the theory that Rachel is lying to us and faking the whole thing. Hence recruiting DJDan as well (I'm on that shortly btw).
As for the content. I'm starting to suspect the theory that Hanso somehow is Mittlewerk has some truth to it. Fresh blood because part of the side effects of his eternal youth process is leaking out heavy water? Perhaps those sideeffects are also the reason why Mittlewerk seems to have to live a somewhat healthy lifestyle (no meat?).

My bet is too that Peter Thompson is DJDan. I just don't think that they would say: hey, we need some voices for a conversation, let's use the voices of DJDan and Tonya, no one will notice...
But there is something strange: DJDan has gotten a threat-phonecall from (who is believed to be) Peter Thompson. How could that be if he's Peter Thompson himself? On the other hand, it could be a great cover! If DJDan recorded that treat himself, the hanso foundation could be tricked into thinking he is definitely not Peter Thompson, and he secured himself because if he is attacked someday by the threatmaker, it's just a cover and the hanso foundation will not bother anymore. The only strange thing is that it has been a long while ago that the threat was made... I am actually sursprised that noone tried to hurt him yet (in both scenario's)
I hope you can still follow my thoughts, I wish I could explain it more clearly...
And about Tonya, maibe she is PT's secretary Irene (She could be heard answering calls on the Hanso voice mail system). But then again, why would a secretary be part of an important conversation and mission with the big boss?

the other thing: has been suggested that the DJDan podcasts are being composited (is that a good english word? At the beginning of DJ Dan's podcast, he mentions that it is the anniversary of the Heaven's Gate suicide which occured in late March of 1997. This supports Team Lena's theory that the podcasts are being given to us out of order.

I've said it before but if we can tell DJDans voice is apparently the same as Peters then no one at the Hanso Foundation that has heard both voices would miss that too. Plus they'd be way ahead of us on it because we've only just heard Pete. I'd also like to know why DJDan is playing thick again? I mean come on, how could he miss the Karma Imperitve/Dharma Initiative thing?
Okay I've done the frequency analysis. At least as well as I can do it, I'm not a speech expert but this seems to me closer then the Rachel/Persephone one, although once again inconclusive. If you were doing this for a court you'd have to get the suspect to say the same words in the same way and if possible with the same recording method, but obviously I'm working from audio clips (of them saying "Alvar Hanso") that are slightly different in both circumstances and expression. The main difference is the extra bass but listening to the Pete clip it's clear (to me) he's speaking close to the microphone (I know....*sigh*) which triggers the proximity effect where you get extra bass in your voice. A lot of vocalists use this effect to their benifit if they have fairly thin voices to start with. So I wouldn't put much weight in that difference alone. In my opinion I'd say it's an 85% chance it is the same voice actor. Make of that what you will. Before I did the analysis I was 95% so perhaps it's thrown a little doubt on it, but not much really.

annebeth - I think people are thinking Africa because of all of the innoculations he just got, and the ties hanso has to the area. I think the island is more likely, though, since that's what they've been focusing on over the last couple of weeks.

filmnerd - I think that site is from a few clues back, when the Hanso site was still active. Isn't that where there was a picture, and if you changed the colors or something, it said "conspira." It was part of a password.
annebeth - I think you're right about the podcasts being out of order. This one seems really early to me. And I'm curious to see how they will tie this game into the show, since the timelines are so far off.

Since EVERYTHING in the various audios/videos needs to be examined as a potential clue, we should find out WHY DJ Dan specifically spoke about the Heaven's Gate cult, circa 1997. This cult believed that Comet Hale-Bopp was a UFO that would take them away; not physically (which is why they killed themselves en masse), but spiritually, i.e., the 'spirit' selves which dwell inside the flesh bodies. Apparently, flesh bodies cannot hitch a ride on the tail end of a comet! A spirit being can! Wild, huh?

The theory that Rachel and Mittlewerk will appear in Season 3 is not convincing to me. Remember, Season 3 would be in late 2004 (Thanksgiving? Christmas?) Assuming this game is happening in real time, then Rachel and Mittlewerk would end up arriving on the island 2 years later. Perhaps we'll see them *off* the island, interacting with Penelope Widmore.

oxillini- I agree. I don't think that we're going to THE island. If we do, I'm scared that it will ruin the show just a little. Part of the mystique of the show (for me at least)is not quite knowing what is going on with the Losties, where they are, and what exactly the island is! I read this: "The game reaches back into 'Lost' history and looks forward to future episodes," said Mike Benson, senior vice president of marketing for ABC Entertainment. That makes me nervous!

Jaundice/alcohol liver disease, Rh disease (Dr. Alexander S. Wiener/Dr. Douglas Arnold -- done on infants), Viral Platelet Disease, high billiruben levels, leukemia (high white blood count), anemia-geophagia syndrome, and (for Marvel readers), of course, to cure one of vampirism.

ange: i know what you mean. if they tell us too much about THE island then that defeats the stated purpose of the game (to keep us interested until the season opener)! They've already pulled a bait and switch once (although probably not intentionally) when they told us the islands in Lake Superior were not what we were looking for.
i dont think season 3 will start off in present day. it might move a lttle faster, and have the season 3 finale take place in present day.
seasons 1&2 took place over 65 days. now that we have already been introduced to the setting and characters, maybe each episode will take place over a week, or longer.
it's possible season 3 jumps to present day, i just don't think it's likely. It has taken 2 seasons to cover 60 some days and they'll jump two years in one episode? I think they just intend to fleshout the backstory a little more for the lost addicts. It can't be essential to the series, though because they don't want to alienate the non-hardcore viewers who don't research every little detail. In discussing things within this community, so much is common knowledge that is completely unknown (and unimportant) to the "average" viewer.
I don't know if we'll jump to present day, but I think that the game has to have some tie-in to the new season. As a marketing tool, the game will be most effective for ABC if they can have a big revelation at the end of the game and then say "find out more by tuning in for the season premiere..."
That Talib Kweli thing has been around forever, I don't think its related to the ARG, only sprite!!
Well, it is possible for Season 3 to skip ahead 2 years if they spend alot of the season having flashbacks to what had transpired during those 2 years. It would keep it current with the ARG and still "fill" us in as to what happened after the finale of Season 2.

I can see the ARG ending as a complete tie in to next season. How? I have no idea, but I could se it leading right up to the Lost intro screen...
It'll be interesting - they can't have the show depend on the game's plot, because they won't want to alienate the viewers who haven't played the game, but part of the idea of the game has to be to get people interested in the new season and the show in general. Who wants to bet there's a clue or something on the season 2 DVD set when it comes out?
Maybe this story will tie more in to the surprise in the finale than to the losties?
belly: what if the ARG finshes up with a "now you know what happens, tune in to the season premierer to find out what set the ball in motion!"? That keeps the show independent of the game (for the non-ARG addicts) but ties the show to the game for the players. TPTB could then basically keep including little nods to the players for the entire season (or show).
Annebeth - Nice call on Walt+Mum. This stuff really does tie into the game. If Mittlewerk has some special powers it could well come from his special infusions and perhaps the children of infused adults are particularly special.
Also the disease on the Lost Island could be the same one that Alvar Hanso had which is a side effect some (most?) develope after this blood infusion treatment?
This is where the experience remains cool, these little links with the series.
Btw, I can give Tonya a try but the woman in Rachels clip doesn't say a lot so I'll struggle to find any kind of similar phrase making comparing it so inacurate it won't tell us much one way or the other.
Belly: I agree with you that a lot would have had to happen if 2 years went by. But TV producers do crazy things sometimes (remember "it was all a dream" from "Dallas"?). They could open with a screenshot of: October 2006 and go from there. A lot of the backstories of the characters have already been done (with a lot of questions for us, of course), so this would give them a whole season of backstories of the last two years. I don't know. The 2004/2006 issue has always been a problem for me. This would be one way to solve it.

Advertising and ridiculous Mittlewerk nonsense aside, isn't the true stuggle surrounded around the mysteries of Lost? A truly great story, and even greater characters; there is beauty in all of this. We are consumed by this foolish game. Just stop the insanity, and let's wait until Season 3 begins. I am sorry for intruding upon everyone's relentless clue-searching; but, the real answers will arrive in September.

I agree, we are all in this together, but, I must point out that the true end to our struggle is the great story that is LOST. It seems that in this ARG (of which I am a huge fan, admittedly), we forget the great narrative that is LOST. Mittlewerk, Hanso, and Valenzetti aside, we really should be discussing LOST, and/or what the show is trying to tell us. If I am way off-base, please feel free to ridicule me; I'm just a Bizarro-fiction writer in Japan trying to make sense of it all. P.S. I love this blog and all the commenters! It passes the time between watching LOST on Winamp and teaching strange Japanese students!

I have a question re the link Rachel put in her post today: She shows the two pages from the Cape Town Inquisitor. However the dates have been changed from the previous ones we saw. And photos are different. Originally it was dated May 26, 2006 and had the "lung" picture. Now it's November 9, 2001 and has a photo of a syringe in a lab labelled "organ harvesting". The retraction page of May 29, 2006 is now November 12, 2001. There's now a pic of a happy hospital patient with a doctor and assit (no Dr. Amy Honale) and there's no Joop, just a pic of "African" bush. What gives? Another blooper?

As far as I can tell, the articles are the same. Just the date and photos (seems photos were ones that were on THF website: the lung, Joop, and Dr. Amy Honale). Maybe they want to erase the link to the website. Although, I have seen that hack that lets us back into THF the other day.
I am going into the site that was emailed us and retracing the steps to get to that point to see if they changed them there...
maybe we just have to add both dates, the 2006 and 2001 to the timeline with an asterick or something noting possible conflict/mistake by TPTB

due to the conflicting dates, and the previous discussions in these comments regarding time travel and MTPs comments - what if persephone was rachel's MOTHER? Rachel is pickup up where here mother left off? Would explain some things to me.
Be more specific, noblelawyer. It doesn't explain things for me.
my problem with RB=P has always been the radical change in MOD. P's clues/hacks had a certain sophistication to them, conversions from binary, ASCII, checking source codes etc... RB is all physical espi. And P's last clues (the creepy picture with the numbers backwords) well she was saying "Help," at least I heard it as part of the audio playing over the numbers. Then that was the last we ever heard from P until RB said she was P. But if P was RB's mother would explain RB's vendetta against HANSO, and provide a motive for why she is doing this - that is find her mother or what happened to her. RB is simply saying she is now P to carry on her mother's work. That is not to say I do not think RB could not be P, just that she may not be.
I agree with matt that something certainly doesn't sit right regarding Rachel=Persephone. My thing is, what if Rachel is supposed to be Persephone and TPTB have simply made so many blunders, they're having trouble selling us on that? They went so far as to have Rachel tell us she is Persephone on her blog. Whole thing sounds forced to me. Like TPTB are saying R=P, get over it and ignore the inconsistencies.
Definitely, something is not right here! It's like any link to THF website has been erased from these two versions. Maybe I'm just not as skeptical as you are, Matt, but my gut still tells me it was a blooper that TPTB finally got around to correcting. Of all the "hospitals" that THF supposedly have around the world why would Rachel give us an example of the one that was involved in the Inquisitor hack?
I do believe the Rachel's mother was somehow involved with THF, either as an employee or receipient of their evil doing. She could have died in that hospital in Cape Town? So this is a personal vendetta. It also leaves the question open as to who her father is? Alvar?

I agree with you Matt. There is a lot of fishy stuff going on now. I really don't trust Rachel and the fact is the only proof we have about her being Persephone is that she said so. If I told everyone that I was really Josh Holloway, I'm pretty sure people wouldn't just accept that. Okay, people may say "but the voices" but by that logic DJ Dan is Pete Thompson. That whole mess up means we have a lot less proof for that argument then we had before because voice similarity may now be irrelevent. Speaker seems to be talking as if it's fact, but that doesn't mean it is. If you take away the voice there is a lot of evidence saying that she isn't Persephone and only her say so that she is.
Add this to a lot of the questionable stuff she's been giving us, her funds that are both apparently running out and still healthy enough for plane tickets and bribes and the way she doesn't answer any of the difficult questions people give her. I'm starting to think she may not be our allie after all. Certainly I'm thinking her blog entries are full of...what's the expression? Oh yeah - short sentances.
Then again maybe that's just because of the slightly poor production and organisation of this act of the ARG. I don't know which one to be hoping for right now.

About Persephony being Rachel Blake's mother: huh, but Rachel gives us info from 2001, and persephony gives us info from 2006. Wouldn't it be the other way around then?

There have been a lot of inconsistencies in this ARG so far. TPTB have made many errors. Look at the islands are in Lake Superior fiasco! I believe they were listening to us discussing whether or not R=P, and actually wanted to set the record straight and had Rachel come out and say I'm P. Get over it, let's move on! But they don't realize how skeptical some of us are. Some, like me, like to go with the flow, and follow the story the way TPTB want us to (even with the errors). Everything so far has been pretty straightforward storywise, I just guess TPTB didn't expect us to dissect everything to the nth degree! They have to throw in corrections, or explanations to move the story ahead. They don't want us to get bogged down in their mistakes or misconceptions. I may be naive when it comes to ARGs (it is my first time doing this), but all of the plot lines have been pre-determined a long time ago, things are playing out the way they intended (except when they have to make those darn corrections or to set us towards the correct paty.

maven - i also want to go with the flow, and for the sake of game progression will say that RB=P, however I remain skeptical and believe it is good to discuss this skepticism, but not to get bogged down in it, with others incase it pans out.
At the moment we seem to be between clues, no one seems to have any new ideas as to the significance of Mittlewerk's vaccinations and transfusions so while we wait for another clue, what can it hurt to examine rb=p debate particularly since RB has now made at least two references to her mother to indicate that her mother may be the reason RB is doing all this.
Okay, so then there is no real need for me to go over THF website to find it at this point, maybe for fun or as a refference...Thanks Matt, I like your site...good stuff there!
I also like to think that the ARG creators are as smart as the people playing it and wouldn't make so many mistakes - of course if I've learned anything in life it is to never underestimate humanity's capacity for stupidity.
I truly meantno disrespect to anyone discussing points. I enjoy that, too. Motivation for actions is very vital in figuring this out. Rachel's mother is an important ingredient in all of this and should be talked about and discussed. This all came about because of the 2 versions of the Inquisitor that came out today with Rachel's post. I just wanted clarification about why the change and what should I do about it on the Timeline.

I have a goofy feeling about RB=P, too. As I mentioned before, it seems like Persephone was more in-the-know than Rachel is. Persephone knew more of the inner-workings of THF and Rachel is operating from square one. Didn't Persephone lead us to the hack that had pictures of the island? So presumably she either knew about it, or knew something about it.
So, basically, put me in the camp of those who thing the P=RB thing isn't solved. In case everyone was wondering where I stand. :^)
Marcusallencooper: That's what I think. The previous date in May 2006 seemed to recent to me when it was first discovered. I'm going to think about this some more, try to get some feedback from TLER team, and update the Timeline.

The thing that's curious for me about all the mistakes TPTB made:
they want us to find clues that are (most of the time) difficult to find. So it's logical that the players develop an eye for detail. Why then do they make so many tiny mistakes?
By the way, is it realy true that the islands in Lake Superior-thing was a mistake? Because why would they make maps than? Did they thought no-one would figure it out? This is exactly the type of game (because it is global and detailed and stuff) where these kind of mistakes may never occur...
Marcus, it could be that they want to tie in the things we discover. But the posts Rachel makes are still (and probably will remain) present-time. So that wouldn't make sense then, right? Or do I miss something? Could very well be ;)
Annebeth: Yeah, the island were a mistake. Some intern at ABC probably got in real trouble over that one. They though the could grab some google earth shots and say it THE island, not knowing one of us would actually find the maps at google earth! So they came up with a pretty lame coverup that Rachel actually had seen a pic of another island with 0 degrees latitutde that she didn't get a screenshot of!
annebeth: The Lake Superior islands thing never sat right with me. Not only did they take the lazy way out and pull maps of a real island which we were able to find. (Well, not me personally, but we as a community.) But then, the only cover story they provide is, "Oh, there were some other maps out of camera that showed the real island. Disregard what you ARG players found." Now it seems everything they provide I am skeptical of, expecting the next post to say, "Oops! Here's what we really wanted you to find. Run along children."

Longtime lurker, rare poster, but....a thought....and this is realllllllyyyyyy reaching, but I want to believe that maybe somewhere there is a TPTB that has a plan...is there a clue in the changes in the newspaper clippings? I don't have Photoshop...is there something behind the pictures? I dunno, it just seems really weird that they wouldn't just repost the same articles they had before. This is why I don't think they are making mistakes...we are pretty sure that they keep tabs on what we say and do, knowing that people like Matt and Evil and many others are pulling images, files, heck entire sites and putting them in other places for further scrutiny, why let someone make a mistake? Especially blatant ones such as these, I think the entire thing is planned and this is part of the plan. Keep us on our collective toes and insert some doubt. With the brain power we have collectively speaking, we could more than likely solve anything...IMHO of course!

Surprisingly (and maybe I'm just not paying attention) you're the first person I've heard mention that. I'll bet you're right, though. Maybe each number signifies an important event in the timeline... ie - 4 years from the equation's invention something bad happened, 8 years after that, something worse, etc.

I think Walts gift is not to make things that do not exists, come into being, but to draw things he thinks of into happening. For instance, we were first aware of his gift when he was reading a book about australian birds, and then he got made about something and a bird crashed and/or dropped dead on their balcony. Then we saw how easily he was able to throw a knife. Locke said "visualize it" and Walt did and bam, perfect aim. Then he wanted to communicate to the losties and so an image of himself was projected to them.

Protean1: Good find. Maybe Troup's other non-fiction books were not published by Hyperion (who published "The Valenzetti Equation") so they don't want to mention them. Just a thought, but probably another error. You should let MattthePale know. He's compiling a list of inconsistencies and error in TLE.
