Lag Alleviation Post

This post is just to alleviate the lag from the many comments in Clue #71. There's a lot of good theory discussion going on, and we wouldn't want the discussion to stop because of lag issues.

Keep those theories coming!!!

Dang!

I posted this on the previous comments but we all switched so I thought I would bring it over.

Caught up at last.
Sorry I wasnt around to answer your question experimentalfilm but I saw someone beat me to an answer.

Thanks for the replies. As I was going through the comments I noticed that many mentioned what I did. But one thing.

It was mentioned but I am thinking maybe important. There definately was another hacker on the THF site. WHO??? I am still thinking that P might not be RB. If this is not the case then I feel the other hacker will come into the game at some point. But someone IMO intended to impersonate P on more than one occasion and the obvious person to me seems to be RB.

And I think it is only fair game that this is discussed as it came up in DJDan podcast. Was that supposed to make us question it.

Of course - as I said in my previous post "they could be messsing with us".

And I forgot to put in the person that DJDan didnt shutdown in the podcast. I, at the time, thought that the next caller was this caller. Thanks for letting me know of the Rose/Bernard link. I think the fact that it wasnt shutdown seems likely to be significant in some way.
It is almost as if DJDan is toying with us. Giving us some kind of cryptic clue. He offers many things to throw us off course such as "fruitles" and the fact that he quickly went through and "shutdown" all the calls. He usually picks up one significant one in his podcasts doesnt he?

Just wanted to say that I've been reading and I just REALLY, REALLY appreciate the way you guys are playing this game. I have been sharpened and encouraged by the way everyone has worked together towards a common goal. Everyone has been friendly, accepting of newcomers, inclusive of all different points of view, challenging of suspect ideas, and respectful of one another all along the way.

Keep up the greatness!!!

Do you guys think there's any possibility that Penny Widmore is Rachel's mom? The last we actually saw her it was about 2000/2001 (in LOST time) She could have been in her 40's (do you think?) Therefore, she was about 20 years old when she had Rachel. Penny didn't seem to have been married yet. She became engaged to Desmond (her father put a stop to that) and she was engaged to someone else now (in 2004 LOST time). So Rachel was "out of wedlock" from her past. Now, as the fact that we're assuming that Rachel's mother is dead: We know that Penny isn't dead (as of 2004), but Rachel could have been raised by someone else or was adopted since Penny wasn't married and in her circle that was frowned upon. But, feeling guilty about that, Penny Widmore made sure Rachel got a good job and career at Widmore Corporation. So Rachel's adoptive mother or whomever raised her is the person who is now dead!

All this is just off the top of my head. I'm trying to think how Widmore Corp. is going to play a bigger role in this story, since that's where we seem to be headed.

Admin:
The way we we see it is that Speaker and Lost Ninja had no idea either. The fact that Lost Ninja updated his blog (at the time) to say that it was just his opinion of RB=P shows IMO that he couldnt say he was sure either. It seems to me that they have now just jumped on the bandwagon because Rachel mentioned it ONCE. Despite all our goings on the fact she mentioned it once (and reluctantly it seemed to me) only suggests something fishy. It coming up again in the DJDan podcast makes me think fishy even more. (unless as I said they ARE just messing with us or the DJDan podcast is pre-recorded so has no connection to our comments on the subject but if that was the case it would suggest in itself that we would have issues believing this which would still make it a deliberate act making us argue over P=RB for either reason put above so I dont believe this one and the fact that we have all been complaing recently makes me think that it would be too bold of them to "mess with us" right now. Could be wrong about that though.

Unless of course I have missed something and Lost Ninja and Speaker HAVE given us a solid lead or confirmation of this. If so then sorry.

Just to throw it into the discussion, now that we have a solid tie to Widmore, Bad Twin (though I still can't figure why TPTB had such a problem with this book and Hanso bashing) mentions that Alvar Hanso sat on the Widmore board, but that his position was taken over by Mittlewerk. This being a work of fiction, possibly nothing to think twice about, BUT something got Hanso to take out all of those ads against Bad Twin. Just thought I'd give it a mention as it's an in-game way that Hanso and Widmore are tied together..also the book mentions Widmore having environmental violations in obscure corners of the Earth (obscure like where a huge boat that doesn't exhist might go?). That's my two cents...

I'm not doubting you lhorse, but I don't have a copy of that ep to check and lostpedia doesn't mention Des Moines... but as soon as "diner" is mentioned we do all think of Kate's mum... is there anything to pin the diner to Des Moines? What significance can we read into that? Just maybe the connecting theme of this is mothers... we all seem to be on that anyway... is Rachel's situation similar to Kate's?

chopsshaw, I know it's been discussed that some people think this site is OOG, and some people are not sure, but that second link kind of screams fake ... "form the desk of Alvar Hanso"? Yes it was you lhorse007 that mentioned the IP addresses of those sites being the same. So how was that site discovered? Has it been referenced in game yet? If not then maybe no passwords will work until it is meant to go live.

Although "allveggie" was obscure it did have relevance as a passowrd. Mittelwerk was a vegeterian (vegan maybe I cant remember). I still cant help but feel that we were supposed to get that before Rachel posted the info. It seemed like a really hard one to come up with though despite the relevance. If anyone can reverse engineer that last password so that we could understand how it was supposed to be figured out then maybe we could get this one before Rachel posts.
I may be way off here in that there is no way we could have got the allveggie pasword without Rachel and even if hansoexposed.com is ready to go live yet but just in case.

there was also the LYCGY admin folder that had a login and password like this that we didn't crack until given the information about a week later (unless I am blurring all the compass stuff together). I read 'Bad Twin'. In the book Arthur Widmore said that AH was a gentleman. Everyone on the Widmore Board except Cliff Widmore believed TWM was dangerous. If you consider the theory that TWM has something to do with AH's disappearance and not in a good way. It's possible TWM pushed the ads against 'Bad Twin' because he couldn't even handle a work of fiction saying something against him. I think in the Gary Troup interviews he eludes to the fact that some things aren't entirely fiction as well.

I agree that allveggie was not completely random, in that TM is a vegetarian/vegan, but that could mean that any words remotely connected could be used. for instance, Peter Thompson - cancersurvivor; alvar hanso - missing person
blood disorder, blood transfusion, I like blood somehow having something to to with the password since Alvar's blood disorder, and TW's blood replacement

Does anyone wonder why someone as young as Rachel (probably just a couple of year out of college) gets a "severence pay" from Widmore Corp? According to wiki, it's usually sick or vacation pay owed to someone who retires or is laid off. How much could she have accrued over a few years of working? This comes back to a crazy theory I had today.

******************SPOILER***********************************

Thinking about the severence pay thing today -- may her mom, Penny, made sure she got a nice payment because she was guilty about abandoning her. I'm sure this is full of hold a mile wide!

Hey there...just checking in. Saw the query re: severance. Yes, you get severance when you're laid off. Some companies are more generous than others. Especially if they are trying to get rid of a group of people and they don't want a lot of folks complaining. High tech companies are notorious for paying exceptionally well (even after the high tech bubble burst) and a six month package for someone who's been at a company for a few years is not unreasonable. I know at the company I worked at previously there were a few folks we wanted to get rid of...they weren't great team players etc...so we "restructured" the department and got rid of them. They all got six months plus a week for every year of service plus their vacation. If RB had worked at Widmore for a couple of years at a salary of say $75K, she would have had some change to bribe with.

If I remember correctly there was a lot of debate about whether or not the Geronimo Jackson site was in game. I can't remember if anyone ever checked the IP address before it disappeared. If there is a cached version perhaps someone can check it still?

One way to get into the whereisalvarhanso site is through the
http://www.whereisalvarhanso.com/Images/letter.jpg link chopsshaw posted (how he/she got there I don't know). Delete the "letter.jpg" and you are in the "Index of /Images", then delete "Images/" and you are in the parent directory and the actual "Have you seen Alvar Hanso?" page. Don't know if there is more but according to the file directroy, that's all there is. The source code contains a message ""Alvar Hanso was a friend, please help."
Chopsshaw also pointed out that the italicized letters in letter.jpg spell "help". Actually the word 'apologize' also contains an italicized 'e' albeit in the same font size unlike the other italicized letters. So: e help
The Dear [blacked-out name] appears to consist of 8 letters including the character q.
Any ideas?

How come there hasn't been any kudos or further discussion related to JESSIEPAO's Lotus-related ideas? Has that been mentioned before and so everyone just let it go? I think it plays into the whole utopian-society-post-Valenzetti-event idea very nicely. It also ties in neatly the connections to Hindu religious ideas.

it's just that simple.

I like the Lotus Flower idea, it definitely fits the theme.

I wondered if there was anything to all the capitalized words as well. I thought perhaps there could be another message hidden among the emphasis. I pulled all of the words last night and then got tired. Here's what I have

HACKED
I'M NOT SURE
GOOD
REAL EVIDENCE
HAD
WHO
REALLY
RESPECT
KNOW
TON
FORGIVE ME
TEAM
THOUSANDS OF DEAR FRIENDS
SILENCE
TRUST
ARRIVED

Then there are the italized words... deserve and right.

I know we don't think the Penny Widmore blog is real but she posted again yesterday claiming that the new post wasn't Rachel which was a popular idea for awhile.

Anyway, I have to get ready for work. I was late yesterday, LOL.

Yes, oxillini: I have referenced crossfade and your great work on the Research blog re the EM/R shields on past postings I've made. Everyone should checkthat out.

LT: Yes, either THF gang is trying to understand the VE (with the autistic savants) so they will know when this catastrophic event will take place, or somehow manipulate it to their advantage.

They could be heading to that island with all that cargo to set up a protective shield using various antennas they've set up around the area (off shore projects, anyone?).

They been doing research all these years re life expectancy, organ transplants, "proprietary formulation" vaccines, etc. so that they will be able to survice whatever happens during the predicted apocalypse from the Valenzetti Equation. The island and Dharma were a testing ground for their theories of survival in a strange, new world. Now they're actually going theere (nothing else meets their specifications), to set up what they've been working on all these years and put it into practice.

Everything is seemingly tying in together....

Eugenics is a social philosophy which advocates the improvement of human hereditary traits through various forms of intervention. The purported goals have variously been to create healthier, more intelligent people, save society's resources, and lessen human suffering. Earlier proposed means of achieving these goals focused on selective breeding while modern ones focus on prenatal testing and screening, genetic counseling, birth control, in vitro fertilization, and genetic engineering. Critics argue that eugenics was and still is a pseudoscience. Historically, eugenics has been used as a justification for coercive state-sponsored discrimination and severe human rights violations, such as forced sterilization (e.g., of those perceived to have mental or social defects) and even genocide.

Selective breeding of human beings was suggested at least as far back as Plato, but the modern field was first formulated by Sir Francis Galton in 1865, drawing on the recent work of his cousin, Charles Darwin. From its inception, eugenics (derived from the Greek "well born" or "good breeding") was supported by prominent thinkers, including Alexander Graham Bell, George Bernard Shaw, and Winston Churchill, and was an academic discipline at many colleges and universities

Scientific and technological utopia
These are set in the future, when it is believed that advanced science and technology will allow utopian living standards; for example, the absence of death and suffering; changes in human nature and the human condition. These utopian societies tend to change what "human" is all about. Technology has affected the way humans have lived to such an extent that normal functions, like sleep, eating or even reproduction, has been replaced by an artificial means. Other kinds of this utopia envisioned, include a society where human has struck a balance with technology and it is merely used to enhance the human living condition (e.g. Star Trek). In place of the static perfection of a utopia, libertarian transhumanists envision an "extropia", an open, evolving society allowing individuals and voluntary groupings to form the institutions and social forms they prefer.

Extropians share an optimistic view of the future, expecting considerable advances in computational power, life extension, nanotechnology and the like.

In 1988, "Extropy: The Journal of Transhumanist Thought" was first published. This brought together thinkers with interests in artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, genetic engineering, life extension, mind uploading, Idea Futures, robotics, space exploration, memetics, and the politics and economics of transhumanism. Good point noblelawyer and a better fit.

Sid, so sorry. Please stay safe.

If the next hint has to do with sports I'm going to be even more useless. LOL

Take care all!

yes melissa, that would be for worst team ever - fortunatly we do not have to sit in snow - it doesn't snow here and we have the superdome - or will again in September when they finish repairing it.

And yes, I am also worthless when it comes to sport clues.

VERY worth noting noiq - remember the ROT guys said the clues would be right under our noses.

I like where you're going with this NoIQ. A couple of things always struck me as odd in her travel post, like "Iceland has the most genetically homogenous populations in the world". Not a typical tourist observation...BUT if you were raised by a scientist, it might be something you'd notice.

Noiq: Good thoughts about what was thought to be just a travelogue. Maybe there are hints in there.

When that Iceland entry came out I did ask about a Viking rivalry possibily giving us her hometown.

There are many cities around the world that are linked to "City of Flowers": Zamboanga, Philippines; Xlapa, Mexico; Merano, Italy; The Flower Capital Aalsmer, Netherlands; even Anchorage is known as the City of Flower during their summer months.

It is really difficult to comment on Season 2 w/o spoilers, rach. There isn't much more that we know here in the states that you don't already know. The others are generally a mystery.

I noticed that, too, Belly. What happened there? I have not seen a post or heard from Antecedent for a few weeks. (I know he was having his wisdom teeth out)

I do have his email, Belly.

Maven...should have known you'd be all over that Viking Reference. Sorry I didn't see it originally.

Other comments (clues?) that pop out...
1. "maybe I read Hamlet too many times" Hamlet wants revenge against the king/hi who killed his father and (in Hamlet's opinion, ruined his mother) and pretends to be insane while he works through his plan. Hmmm...of course we know that ended really badly.
2. "hope to become a better interior designer" I have no idea why Copenhagen is a good place to learn design.
3. "of course, I'm a city girl" Detroit?

oh, dang, hit submit without proofreading. that #1 should read the king/his uncle, not the kinghi.

Matt the Pale,
I agree with you that they (Speaker & Ninja) aren't totally in the know. But TPTB are definitely in touch with them and can certainly correct them if they are wrong.

I just have a hard time believing that TPTB would mislead us so blatantly and allow their own mouthpieces to be mislead as well. I do believe that they would allow us to perpetuate false assumptions to keep us from arriving at the end too soon but I don't think they would purposely trick us like that. It's a BIG lie and a BIG risk for them to take. A risk b/c I think a lot of people would be significantly frustrated and quite disillusioned by a reveal that Rachel isn't Persephone after all.

fastenyourseatbelts: Also in Copenhagen she mentions "I actually made some money at that job I mentioned." Nothing about her "severence pay".

In Iceland she also talks about how children are named by their father's first name. Another reference to "who is my father?"

Gotta go for a few hours. Hopefully I WILL miss something!

By the way...I didn't know if you all knew this but "young wallace" is William from the podcasts. He lurks all the time but is typically too busy at work to post...It looks like he's plugging in for a bit.

little tiger: Mittelwerk said the island has unique properties but doesn't say anything about the properties of the rejected islands. It's possible those are just regular islands rejected for mundane reasons like too close to shore or whatnot.

i agree with belly on the rb=p issue. i think TPTB are probably getting frustrated that we're not buying it completely as a community. the keep giving more and more overt statements to convince us. it's possible that inconsistencies between the two are no more than mistakes. wouldn't be the first time they've told us to ignore their mistakes and move on.

i think this eugenics/utopian society in a post nuclear apocalypse world theory would be a good way to tie so much together. It also clears a major hurdle i've had with other theories. ultimately, tptb have to present a plot that has a basis largely in scientific fact or the more techno-oriented viewers and players poo poo the ideas as impossible. at the same time, the overall premise has to be understandable for all viewers, even the less scientific. when they pull the wraps completely off the grand scheme, they want everyone in the audience, nerd and jock and hippie and everyone else, to go "oh, i get it!" i think thf wanting to build a society to carry humanity past the end of the world could fill that role.

what if thf is gatehering together all the high tech ideas/devices they can to survive the end of the world. kind of a new library of alexandria type thing in the south pacific. they will preserve all the work done by scientists thus far in one place hardened against the worst humanity has to offer.

Did anyone else read the article in today's NYTimes about Rogue Waves? Basically there's a large interest in the scientific community to study them, they are more common than originally thought.

The whole time I was reading the article I was thinking of the Helgus Antonius and wondering if a RW would get it.
