Lost Experience Podcast Episode 8 & Frappr

Twelve important questions, an interview with an Australian, and the return of Listener Feedback. This podcast is content rich, contains the first authentic accent, and is also the longest one on record for this blog. Check out our message boards (see link in sidebar) as you listen b/c they usually host a pretty good discussion of our podcasts. It took a lot of work to make this one work, hope you guys think it was worth the effort...

Click HERE to launch iTunes, find our podcast, and subscribe.
Click HERE if you'd rather just listen in your browser or right-click and save the file. Usually, in the comments, somebody mirrors the file so its more accessible. :)
Thanks to MrTimmyC for hosting and faster downloads!

In the case of another slow day, might we suggest an advanced form of global interaction called Frappr...

Do you frappr? If you're not a frappr, it's time to become one. There's no distinction between East Coast Frapp, West Coast Frapp, Crunk Frapp, or Gangsta Frapp...we can all be Frapprs with the click of a mouse. It's that easy. Our stats tell us that we have between 5,000 and 6,000 individuals visit this site each day so we figured at least half of you would be interested in Frappring...our goal: 2,500 new Frapprs by Monday. Click HERE to get started.

Special THANKS to Christy for getting the Frappr started for our blog...You rock Christy! Now get in there everybody.

Lost noms:

Casting a Dramatic Series (though it sounds incredibly lame, this looks like it SHOULD be the equivalent of "Best Cast" in the SAG awards.

Outstanding Cinematography for a Single-Camera Series: For "Man of Science, Man of Faith."

Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series: For "Live Together, Die Alone."

Outstanding Editing (for single-camera): For "One of Them"

Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series: Henry Ian Cusick as Desmond (this is GREAT! Esp. considering his fate is up in the air)

Outstanding (single camera) Sound Mixing: For "Live Together, Die Alone (Part 2)."

Outstanding Special Efx for a Series: For "Live Together, Die Alone (Part 1&2)."

Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series: For "The 23rd Psalm" so yea for Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse!

Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series: For "Live Together, Die Alone." Yea for Jack Bender.

Okay and there are others but the confusion between Single-Camera Picture Editing and everything else is annoying.

But it IS very political and varies with the amount of $$$ put into a campaign. They also changed the rules this year for who votes for what category so a lot of people woke up unhappily this morning. If there was an award for "Outstanding Mystery-creation" or "Outstanding Tension-creation" then it'd all be there.

At least frickin' "Desperate Housewives" didn't get rewarded for it's suckiness nor get validated for considering itself a "comedy."

(LONG LIVE ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT!!!)

Yeah, the shut out in all the big categories (especially Best Drama, which it got last year) really is too bad.

Well, I guess we have to take a deep breath, accept an error and get on with it. Let TPTB lead us on and, hopefully, we'll get all the answers to those 12 questions! Looking forward to every day of this "Experience."

Thanks David and Daniel!

teddy grahams are little graham crackers shaped as bears, which might be flavored with cinnamon, or sugar, and are not only tasty, but are fun to eat as well. Partly because in real life a bear might rip your head off, but you can bite the head off of a teddy graham without much trouble.

A note about Peter Thompson's voice being DJ Dan:

DJ Dan has a hispanic accent. A very light one, but you can pick it up -very- easily if you listen to him with headphones.

Peter Thompson has a lighter voice, and no accent whatsoever. And as someone who has done serious voice studies, it's very hard to put on a light accent like that (or take it away).

Tanya may be the same person. That voice sounds very similar, same accents.

I haven't done any voice studies but actors take away accents all of the time. Look at the doctor from House he is brittish yet carries no accent on the show.

Hugh Laurie also has 10 years of voice acting experience. ;) You have to work very, very, very hard to get rid of an accent once you hit 18 or so, because it's been so deeply ingrained. Also, Peter Thompson's voice has a lot of different qualities than DJ Dan's. PT is a -lot- quieter and his voice has a lighter flutter to it.

Hey Geezers!!

Just checking back... summer is slow for my work, so I'm in and out today...

WHY hasn't anyone posted this Wiki info on Helgus Antonius who is supposedly a mathematician who has written on what the russians call eventology (eventology like preventing the end of the world, etc.) and his writings have a connection to Fermat's last theorem (Valenzetti supposedly solved that)

Valenzetti = Mathematician

Probably you are right partly. Especially it concerns the second section of paper. However the first section without doubts keeps within a well-known encyclopaedic category “Paradoxes in mathematics”. Russian mirror of this paper contains, for example, popular delusions which often meet at discussion on “Fermat's last theorem”, “Parallel lines in Lobachevsky's geometry”, “Events with zero probability”. Can be it is necessary to open a new category “Paradoxes in mathematics” into which this paper could enter? Your opinion? :: The delusion consists in popular attempts to justify or to prove or to deduce definition: P(AB)=P(A)P(B) from other assumptions. Mathematical definitions do not demand proofs, especially in a preamble to encyclopaedic paper. The criticism is directed only on style of a preamble. All other sections of paper “Statistical” are quite correct. - Helgus 12:32, 25 May 2006

I came across this on the web with a possible solution to your forbidden error problem.

1. Open an Internet Explorer browser.

2. Click on the Tools menu and select Internet Options.

3. Click on the Advanced tab.

4. Scroll down through the list of check boxes until you find Java (Sun).

5. If there is currently a check mark in the check box you will need to
remove it, close any open Internet Explorer browsers, and move to step 9. If there is NOT a check mark in the box then you will need to place a check in the box and move to step 6.

6. Once you have placed a check in the box for Java (Sun) click on Apply, click on OK, and then close any open Internet Explorer browsers.

7. Repeat steps 1-4 to open the Internet Options window.

8. Remove the check mark that you placed in the box for Java (Sun) click on Apply, click on OK, and then close any open Internet Explorer browsers.

Now try getting on to lostpedia again.

Marcus - I haven't seen anywhere that 'Helgus Antonius' is a mathematician - moreso that entering 'helgus' into google will give you, as its first result, a supplementary result for 'Eventology' which lives on wikipedia user Helgus's user page.

I had accepted that helgus antonius was either one of two things. I personally didnt check the conversions but I presume who did was being honest.

1. Holy Flower (or Flower of Life).
This would fit in with the DJDan thing (and other things?) and if it was the case then it isn't a clue as such. More of an Aaah as we see this coming into play now.

OR

2. Saint Anthony. Someone said it translated into this and that St. Anthony was the patron saint of "finding clues". Which would mean it is just a teaser of some sort.

I am off to try and verify these.

Marcus - I see your point, but still think that including something in Wikipedia, from a Russian scholar with not so good english (see his comments), is kind of an obtuse way to get us to look at anything. Also, I still haven't seen a reference to "Helgus Antonius" on any of those pages - and why point us to any author whose online handle is 'Helgus'? Why would the ship be named after him, if that's your line of thinking? I do think that 'Eventology' is an interesting sidebar, but for me that's all it is. FWIW the links to the flower of life, Saint Anthony or even bizarre "weekend" translations seem to hit closer to the mark for me. I'm happy to be proven wrong, but the whole thing just doesn't add up, or even seem like a logical progression.

I'm not intending to be contrary... 3:20 am here, beddie-byes for me.

marcus: i do not see how wiki user helgus' work is related to the the work Valenzetti did. Valenzetti's work is about mathematical modelling to determine the time at which a given outcome will occur. Helgus' work appears to be based on statistical independence.

oxillini and pharmacopaeia. I know of the port in West China also but dismissed it as I couldnt find anything other than the fact that the are working on a "silk road" which would allow ships (presumably but I wonder if it doeas actually mean a real road) to travel from China, through asia and Europe to the Atlantic Ocean. Thanks for pointing it out though.

Any thoughts as to why the "i" in ANTONiUS is in the lower case? Besides the fact that there's supposedly to be some personal appearances by Rachel and there must be a track that takes her to the USa ;-)

this is your best podcast yet...lovin' the gilligan's island music behind the intro.

I, too, am torn like maven in this newspaper article thing. I really want to just play the game and not harass TPTB or get any interns fired... But it would be nice to know which of these "mistakes" were part of the game and which are just mistakes. If they're just mistakes, I'll ignore them and go on enjoying the game, but there's no way of knowing. It may be that we're supposed to harass her about it... but there's just no way of knowing...

But, so far, this thing has been great. i REALLY have no complaints about it... I have thoroughly enjoyed this entire experience. I think we should maybe have a spot on the Research Blog where all the questions we have are listed and then updated with answers, and then all players can leave comments with thoughts and theories.

TEDDY GRAHAMS ARE DELECTABLE!

We really haven't had any true purpose to that colorful Mittlewerk letter that we "worked so hard on" yet. I wonder if we are supposed to get more from that letter that we've tried for, and I, too, am on the boat of people thinking that Lake Superior may still play into the game. I don't believe it was a mistake, but I wish there was some way of knowing.

These were all great questions...

K.Barrick: happy to see you comment! Arrested Development is hilarious... too bad it didn't do better ratings wise.

took a peek at that site, but the more advanced map feature stunk... it couldn't find any addresses in NY, NY nor landmarks, etc. It didn't like NYC and I have to get in the shower before Rachel posts OR is she shy about her posting errors.

BTW, were those pictures of the ship just from different angles or was it moving away from the port (that picture with the little boat to the right that would guide a ship like that in & out of port; even though it supposedly couldn't get INto that port - luckily the in-game port is deeper...)

3. It would be interesting if Mittlewerk was her dad! Dun dun duuuun.
5. No.
6. Tonya Jefferson holds a Ph.D. in Communications from USC'S Annenberg School of Communications. Mother of two, she is often found reeling DJ Dan back into orbit with her patented DJ Dan Double Strength Tractor Beam. And if that doesn't work, she uses powdered donuts. Duh
BTW, I think the "other woman" in the rachel recording is probably the WWC (?) that is "in bed" with Hugh
7.1. Yes
7.2. No
9. Hanso
11. Insurance money from her mom's death

Mountain Girl,
I doubt that site is in-game, looks too low-budget there's no way a THF website would be so simple.

They spent a lot of time on it though, 13 articles.

Ok, what the heck is with the pictures on the frappr site? LOL
I think it was a semi-nude man in a fur? I am pretty sure it's not something I'm allowed to view at work...hahaha
How am I going to explain that to my boss when he gets back from vacation? LMAO.

mountaingirl: I too was unsure about hansoadoptions.org when I first saw it, especially with the hidden link to artemis.hansoadoptions.org which has a new DHARMA logo on it.

But the more I look into it the more it seems to be a VERY good fake, even going as far as purchasing space on Google's sponsored links (although that in itself is probably the biggest tip off that it's fake).
