Clue #120 - Fragment Code "Tropics"
Fragment Code "tropics" was found today on Monster.com. We were led to monster.com by a glyph-containing ad in People Magazine. Take the poll on the Monster homepage and click "results". On the results page, you'll see a banner add at the top of the page for Tropics Travel. If you click on the "click here" button, it takes you to hansoexposed.com. The video fragment is of Mittlewerk saying, "They think they're infected with a virus carried by local macaques"

I was able to register for the Acura thing last night for the Philly date just in case I needed to. I am not a VIP which stinks because obvious they don't know who I am and that I work for TLEC....lol
I would try again with different e-mail addresses and survey answers until you get it. I got one after my second try...YMMV. Since you've already registered for real once, I would just put fake info in everything except for the name - since the only thing that actually prints on the VIP pass is your first and last name.

I posted in the last comments at least twice about how the banner took you to hansoexposed. I figured it meant something but never figured tropics could be a word, and everyone seem to be ignoring me so I dropped it thinking it must have been old. :(
In fact I was first to post in comments about the banner linking to HE. I should have kept playing with it. I was just so frustrated with stupid blogger! STILL AM HAVING PROBLEMS!!!

if it wasn't for the goddam continuity error of Hugh saying that LOST is a TV show.. I'm pretty sure that was a mistake on the actors part, and so the creators of the ARG had to run with it, but I don't think it was meant to be how it panned out.
I asked this question earlier but I think it got lost in the flood of glyphs we got today. :o) My question was "If we are to believe that LOST is just a TV show in-game then how come Gary Troup's interview video's were part of the game? We know he was on flight 815 and never returned so... wouldn't that make LOST real in the game?"

peaceandnamaste - I've posted before that by the end of the Sri Lanka video, we're going to have a much clearer idea of what Kelvin meant by "the Hostiles." They're either original DHARMA operatives, or Mittelwerk's wetworks team, seen in labcoats in the Sri Lanka video.
Kelvin and Desmond are from one group, and the Others are from the other. Which ones will turn out to be the operative "good guys" and which ones will be the naughty ones? It's like Bart's evil twin from the Simpsons. It might not be who we expect.

Yeah - I feel kinda guilty that I have 3, but I did wait until the line was gone and everyone got one first. Once the line was gone they just started handing them out to every "lady that luched" and "teen queen" around. They had no idea what they were for.

I wasn't exactly clear in my previous post. I didn't mean to say that the very people we see in the Sri Lanka video are the ones on the LOST island. I meant more that these labcoats would represent the same group (in the event that ARG and show do not merge) as either the Hostiles/Others or the DHARMA operatives on the LOST island.
However, we know that S3 is going to clear up where the four-toed statue came from, and the life on the island prior to DHARMA's arrival. And we know that the DHARMA operatives thought they had to vaccinate themselves from some biological vector. So what if the DHARMA operatives as represented by Kelvin and Desmond are paralleled in the ARG by the "villagers"?
I agree, I don't know how these two storylines will merge, if they merge at all. But I think there are connections, receptor points if you will, that might allow for such a merger.
Something bothers me:
Code XWZW and the new Code pfkab5qxk go together.
We must be absolutely certain we are hitting precise genetic targets
we have engineered into the virus.
So the genetic targets are not certain people, ethnic groups or whatever, but the genetic targets are in the genetically engineered viruses TMW is dealing with.

I think by "good ones" the others mean good in that they survived the disease without the vaccine. Of course I think those that get the disease don't die of it but are effected mentally (which is why Rouseaus' husband and son changed and she killed them)
i thought Rouseau may have been the one that went crazy but we have now met her daughter who helped claire and is apparently sane so I think rouseau is the sane one

n.i.k., noblelawyer - I used to think that the original DHARMA operatives were the bad guys, and the Others broke off. That was why I thought they were referred to so pejoratively by Kelvin. Because they had seen the light. But now I'm not sure that it isn't the other way around. Given the events in the ARG, I'm wondering if the original DHARMA was good, but when Hanso kinda disappeared, less scrupulous characters within THF took over and changed it into the massive evil we know it as now.

there is speculation that the black smoke set them down safely, hence jack seeing it in his eye in the pilot. There is a still frame somewhere with a wisp of black smoke in the cabin of 815

It's hard to make out the placenames in the video segment, but the first one sounds like Vallan:

It's so small it's not even shown on Google Earth but it must be a village on a small 3 x 4 mile island in the north-eastern region of Sri Lanka. The other name I can't make out, something like Bitu Alami but can't find any place like that at fallingrain.com which lists quite small villages (BTW - very reliable weather forecast).

I think that is why the disassociated themselves from the goblet video cause it revealed the underwater outpost that would tie in with the shark. It still remains to be seen if they will go that direction. Most of the other fakes are just old footage strung together,but the goblet is all original content. Even if hackett was working with her how would thet get abc and all of it's others companies to distribute it when abc is on good terms with THF. I think the less than expected success of snakes on a plane has showed TPTB that internet buzz doesn't really translate into dollar signs. I think they are more concerned with the 30 million that watch lost and less concerned with the 30,000 that play this game. I remeber a long time ago ther was some buzz about an episode in season 2 exploring the islands mythology and how the hatchs got there,hence the fragment film. Instead of using this new orientation on the dvd, they made some summer fun for us out of it. But it will be on the dvd too probably. They don't want to alienate to 30 million who watch the shoow so anything important we learn here will definetly be shown to the regular viewers.
like i sadi before I will be happy if at the end of this they come full circle and show us some direct crossover with the show, Like mittlewerk talking to someone from the show when they show who he is talking to or something like that

Perhaps Malik has already set up the meeting between Hanso and Rachel and Hanso is now helping her with his vast financial resources to pull off the whole Apollo thing. This would of course mean that he would help bring down his own organisation but I guess since he has not been seen in years and he probably knows that with Mittelwerk at the rudder the Foundation has been up to all sorts of evil shenanigans he might be ok with that.

2costa, the link to the site hosting the djdan live cast was accidentally given out early by some ABC lackey. That would be why they said that the link would be given out 12 hours before the show, so they could rehearse in peace. The obviously weren't watching at least this board that day because not only was the link posted well in advance, but there were a few comments about the music being played something like 24 hours before the show was due to go on. So I agree the reheasal was not meant to be heard.
i know oodles but this leg of the game is annoying, and at least they could keep it interesting and beleivable, and like I said rachel not being behing the e-mails is the only thing that makes sense in the context of the game

BTW, is your Lost map anywhere online in smaller separate chunks rather than as the entire thing in one file? I have never been able to open the large map file without it chewing up my computer and having to cancel it. And in the smaller size, I can't read anything. I would love to check it out, it looks nice. Thx. :-)

Yes, if I could do it over again, I would've thought more about preserving the bars on the way home. However, I had a friend with me who also snagged two bars, and she gave the extra one to me. It survived the trip relatively intact! So I will take my pic with it and then send it along in the Apollo Trade (tho sending the actual chocolate doesn't seem like a good idea in light of this incident...) I will keep the other two for snacking (would gladly send the wrappers around for those too, but the melting chocolate kind of warped them :( and I doubt anyone wants their pic with a crappy wrinkled Apollo wrapper!)

just stopped by to give a report on the Indy giveaway. they had the apollo bars but they were bogarting them fierce. I put up a sob story about all the little losties who won't have a give away in their state. I wanted to share the love.....
all in all the event was a lot of fun. they did some trivia questions and gave out some extra goodies; I copt a LOST beach towel.
there were several losties in attedence and I have to say we stuck out like a sore thumb.
I was only able to get two bars. I'm making plans to attend the giveaway in lexington,KY.

So this morning a user on lostpedia with the name theonetrueway posted something under August 42nd:

The top has visible binary code which translates into "highlight the white". Highlighting the rest of the page you get more binary code which translates as "you will know when the one true way has been found flickr dot com

The Lostpedia team has decided it was a fake and has deleted the lot.
A few things I would like to say:
1) I am actually dissapointed in anyone who posts to WIA.com with a dog, stuffed animal, action figure, and/or just the bar. Putting a face to the players is a cool idea and as usual people have to ruin it.
2) You do not have to sign up for any of the newsletters to get the VIP pass, and the VIP pass does not guarantee that you will get in, it says so on the printable pass.

Paw, I don't know. I don't know whether the lostpedia main heads have evidence that it is fake or whether it is just an informed hunch. In any case they decided that the user theonetrueway was a spammer and blocked him/her from contributing for the next 3 days at least. So I guess for now we can assume that the patern/fullproof message was also fake.
I'm with you Matt. It's no one's business what I do in my spare time.

Somehow it's supposed to wipe out poverty, war, and famine. One guess but it's been done many times is that he's targeting the human gene for aggression.
Anybody see Serenity? I love the way the Reaver thing turned out. (Obviously, not what they did but the story about how they got that way.)

So the villagers are not infected by a virus carried by the macaques but by something else, perhaps a genetically engineered virus introduced by THF earlier. Now THF goes in again pretending to bring them a vaccination but probably just doing more experiments, "hitting precise genetic targets engineered into the virus". Maybe THF is using human subjects to propagate this virus for them? It looks like the people used in the experiments will need to be quarantined, which is where the Helgus Antonius comes in. So whatever TWM is planning will probably render them highly infectious.
How all this medical research can end all famine, war, and poverty remains a mystery, short of wiping the human race out altogether.

If the Helgus Antonius was meant to carry people who were infected in quarantine, then why was the Bridge of the ship quarantined? It could be that the ship is meant to quarantine the ones not infected.

You have a point about the quarantined bridge alright.
Well, many rural villages in the third world believe (at least on the surface) what people from bigger, richer cities tell them. Hence the problems in third world countries of women starting their babies on promotional formula freebies thinking it's better for them. Then their milk dries up and they have to feed their babies formula which is more expensive than if they'd started nursing. It's sad but it happens.
I think it could be enough for official sounding people to come in and tell them they were sick. But you could be right too.
goingdark: I heard about that years and years ago. I'm hoping that's old news formula companies have changed their policies.

TBM: I gave Crossfade some basic nanotechnology info for the Research blog. Basically an engineered virus is a nanite by definition. Engineered viruses are being worked on to do everything from boost the immune system, fight cancer, as well as insert snippets of genetic code into a person's DNA. I'm no expert I just read Scientific American and NewScientist.
I'm not sure what TVM is up to but it would be interesting if he were trying the latter.
Anybody mind if I spoil Serenity? Then I can talk about another situation where somebody tried to mess with people's make-up.

The government wanted to pacify a population so it experimented with people's body chemistry (in this case through gassin the atmostphere). It targeted agression. People became so apathetic that they never got up again and died or they had the opposite reaction.

How could this relate to Lost? Mittlework may believe (or may be trying to get others to believe) that by stamping out some bad trait, maybe aggression maybe something else, he can get rid of poverty, war, and famine. The "vaccine" might actually mess with people's brain chemistry or change their DNA through an engineered virus. There may be nothing wrong with them initially except that they are "unimproved" humans.
But like all mad scientific experiments it will probably backfire and do the exact opposite of what he wants. Maybe the Others are an example of this happening the first time?
Sorry for the typos. By "opposite reaction" I mean exactly opposite. Their aggression went through the roof.
The Others obviously have little respect for common people except those that meet their particular criteria, "good." DHARMA could have been trying to create "good" people through training. TVM could be trying to engineer "good" people though his nanovirus.

For those going to an Acura/Apollo event, let us know how it works out. I'd like to find out if you need a VIP ticket to get the candy bars. Are bars inside the goody bags they mention for the VIP ticket holders?
The Acura/Apollo event nearest me is in San Francisco and isn't being held until Sept 20 so hopefully we will have figured out the way it works by then. I have to travel over 2 hours to get to SF so want to make sure it is going to pay off and not be an event like some we have seen so far where the candy bar give away was a bust. I love going to San Francisco but want to combine the trip with collecting an Apollo bar!!
