Clue #122 - Fragment Codes "Narvik", "OUDW" & "307L97BDB9"

Fragment Code, "NARVIK" was found on monster.com. If you take the poll on monster's front page and click results, you'll see a banner ad for Narvik Travel which links to hansoexposed.com. The video fragment is of Mittelwerk saying, "We have tried to change those values by manipulating the environment in many, many ways."

Fragment Code, "OUDW" was found on an old post on Lost Ninja's blog. If you click the link in his blog that says "Snakes on a Plane" it takes you to the new glyph and code. (We're not sure yet how anyone knew to look there). The video fragment is of Mittlewerk saying, "We need not take any more lives than is absolutely necessary. Yes?"

Fragment Code, "307L97BDB9" was found at Rachel's Blog. Click on the number 57 under links and it takes you to this picture . The code is found by putting together the flashing letters and numbers. The video fragment is of Mittlewerk saying, "...and the bodies of the dead must be brought to this station immediately for full genetic workup."

Stay up to date with your hansoexposed.com fragment codes by visiting Matt the Pale's Fragment Code List.

Thanks to Tresbien, Marcus, Chewie, Sara, Donn, & The Lost Bird for emailing us about these codes!

Summary of how 'oudw' was found: Ninja posted a clue on his blog:

In ITE profiles #2
search for a mutant totally blue
posted by hanso_ninja on Aug 30 01:55pm

Cadfile found this on ITE, matching "Hank McCoy" to The Beast [totally blue mutant]:

Once upon a post Ninja went to Church.
But slithery reptiles hindered his search.

Posted by: Hank McCoy | August 23, 2006 at 08:54 PM

And Frosty and Matt the Pale found the glyph on Ninja's 07/31 blog; click on "Snakes on a Plane" and there it is.

My kids went back last week... the youngest started middle school this year, so they all have to be at the bus stop at the same time... Of course that is the same time we are trying to get ready for work, so 5 people and 1 bathroom is not a good thing. Gonna cost us about $6000 to put in a 2nd bathroom... so for now we get up even earlier to get ready..... Feeling very old at the young age of 34...LOL

The Ninja glyph was the closest I've come to finding one...I saw Ninja's comment and posted it to the group on ITE. I searched for blue mutants [The Tick, Beast, Mystique], but just couldn't get my fuzzy brain to make the leap to their "real" names [darn it]. Then MtP, Cadfile, and Frosty were off and running...Frosty posted the code to everyone, sharing it with the world since he was already on the leaderboard.

So now it's back to 'read the thread, copy, paste'...the far more time-efficient way to do it. :^)

Howdy y'all. I pretty much stopped entering codes for myself a while back and am completely relying on y'all to put the video together for me. Basically whenever I was having trouble saving my sequence, I realized all I was using if for was to watch the latest snippet. Too much hassle to wait through the intro and loading all the glyphs to watch a 2 second clip out of context. Good job everyone finding glyphs, some of us are hopeless without ya!

The problem with releasing all the glyphs at once is what if they all got found in 4 days. That would essentially mean that we would have had the whole video since July 30 or so, and this portion of the game would be over. If they didn't have anything planned again til September 1, what could they have done? Just wait it out? They're just trying to keep the game on schedule. This is certainly better than waiting around a month for Act IV to start...

Dennis, thanks! Lospedia also says Narvik has been seen before in Lost. (see below)

If you check all the named glyphs we've gotten, they all tie into what's happening somehow.

28. nanite - bioengineered virus

Quote-"Our operatives at the VIK Institute have verified this figure."

36. tribalwars - "use of our population model
to predict the growth of your tribal enemies -- especially if you intend on using our predictions to launch a pre-emptive strike" - http://lostpedia.com/wiki/The_Lost_Experience_clues/May_30

Quote-"Alvar Hanso"

38. chocolates - Apollo bars

Quotes-"Whether through nuclear fire, chemical and biological warfare, conventional warfare, pandemic, overpopulation..."

44. vaccine - TVM's mysterious proprietary vaccine

Quote-"Broadcasting in a frequency and encryption known only to us." (referring to the numbers which the vaccine in LostTV is labeled with)

45. theflashlight - referring to Rachel's "flashlight" post on her blog - That was the one where the Vik institute burned and Malik got hit on the head with an iron

Quote-"Without allowing for anymore suffering than is absolutely necessary."

53. tropics - Sri Lanka is in the tropics

Quote-"They think they're infected with a virus carried by local macaques."

54. narvik - Narvik is a port city in Norway that is the real world location of a building depicted in the Swan Orientation Film. - http://lostpedia.com/wiki/Narvik

Quote-"We have tried to change those values by manipulating the environment in many, many ways."

Any theories on how these all fit together? What about the numbers for each of these clues or how the dialogue in the corresponding video might shed light on the word code chosen?

OK, so what's the consensus on this one ... when Mittlewerk says the bodies must be brought to THIS station ... did he just finish talking about a station and is now referencing it, or is it possible that this video is not from a ship, but was taken IN a station? And, if they are in a station, is it an island station, or could THF have stations off the island as well?

Pharm-So your saying that this vaccine isn't 100% accurate and that it might kill of some people. That's why they want to look at the bodies, so they can see the genetic make-up and find out how they can tweak it so the vaccine will be able to work on the general public when the world does end. They are testing the vaccine, and they know that there will be casualties, and they need to take radical action...

Hey, LHorse: Is it your birthday! Have a Happy One!

Sounds like this "vaccine" is not so foolproof! It probably is a rush job and they needed to do this test on the subjects off of Sri Lanka. Apparently, the genetic workup of these bodies will help fine tune the vaccine. But doesn't that take some time to do? I wonder what the precise genetic targets are in this virus.

morning all!

ok, given the clips we've gotten today, i have a new theory, new to me at least. i think they are using humans as a method to produce something (vaccine maybe) they infect a population, collect the dead bodies, do a genetic workup and select the ones that fit their targets. from these they extract something (blood, organs?) for their own sinister purposes. perhaps making a new vaccine, the ulitmate biological weapon, the panacea to ALL disease, whow knows. i'm getting a kind of a soylent "whatever" vibe from these recent clips. "it's made of people!"

From what we have so far, I think TWM is trying to fine tune a virus that will wipe out vast sections of the earth's population, so that the aftermath of armaggedon (a la the VE)will be manageable for the future population -- those that are genetically engineered to survive and repopulate the earth.

8/30/2006 10:49:00 AM
Blogger maven said...

Hey, Pharma: I agree with you that the islanders are being used to test this virus. But doesn't genetic work-up's take time. TWM and his gang seemed rushed into action, but science doesn't like to be rushed.

2nd intern, Jill: "What, like throw it out at parades?"

3rd intern, Stan: "Or give it away out of shady vans?"

Kenny: "No, we have to, like, go places and hand em out."

Jill: "Oooooh, like in Hawaii?"

Stan: "Or Tulsa?"

Kenny: "Nope we have a list from TPTB."

Stan: "Who's TPTB?"

Kenny: "I don't know, but they sign our meager checks, so let's do this."

Jill: "Alright, what do we need to do?"

Kenny: "I don't know, I guess just show up and hand em out and stuff"

Stan: "Should we call ahead to tell the marketing people what's going on or put info up on the website?"

Jill: "Nah, we're ABC, they'll know when we're coming and how to get the candy."

Kenny: "Plus I don't want to use up all my personal cell phone minutes."

Jill: "Agreed."

Stan: "I still think we should let people know what's going on."

Jill & Kenny: "Shut up Stan!"

Kenny: "To the intern-mobile!"

I am writing to confirm that there will be an ABC network promotion for the TV show, LOST, associated with the Acura event on September 7. ABC network organizers for the LOST Experience game have announced that Apollo candy bars will be distributed at this event.

Obviously TPTB will not talk about the game right now and how everything played out. But do you think they ever will? I really hope they address all of the concerns that everyone has mentioned via a podcast or something. Maybe even apologize for the Apollo distribution fiascos and timing of release ofglyphs on HE.com. I am not a real active contributor but I am an active player. I want a candy bar (but I live near Boston) and I would love to get on the leader board (but I don't have time to be searching the the internet for Glyphs).

Well put Belly. The other missing aspect to this game besides the non-communication in the candy phase, is the lack of coordination in the video phase. By coordination, I mean, the timing of the HE site update to accept codes, the placement of the clues in the magazines, etc., and the placement of the codes on the respective websites or geographic site. For instance, if a magazine is supposed to be issued with a clue on a certain date, is it so hard for TPTB to coordinate the HE site and the glyph/code site on the same day so that we don't spend one or two days searching WHERE WE ACTUALLY ARE SUPPOSED TO BE SEARCHING, but can't find it because the timely updates haven't been performed?! Sheesh. I really don't get it. It's a wonder how ABC/TPTB can actually get a TV show put together on time and on the tube if they can't even synchronize three parts of releasing a clue, or make a simple phone call to pre-arrange an event with a venue. I dunno, maybe I'm just being too critical.

Boy, that Pennslyvania event really sucks. Arrested? For an ARG? Come on, TPTB, get your act together.

Oxillini: Great script. And probably pretty accurate.

I'm planning on going to the Sept. 16th Acura/Viceroy Hotel/Santa Monica event. But I'm really apprehensive about traveling about an hour on a Saturday night to an area I'm not really familiar with, and what if there's another screwup? Hopefully, besides maybe scoring some Apollo bars, some of us TLECers will connect and meet eachother. That will be fun at least.

"We have tried to change those values by manipulating the environment in many, many ways"

Just gotta say - so called that. The Valencetti equation obviously isn't set in stone and CAN be manipulated by changing the non constant parts of it. Which does also mean in theory you could manipulate it the other way which of course is still open for the big plot twist.

Okay from the sounds of it they haven't suceeded in changing things...which brings about the next part, maybe it is a self fufilling prophecy because Valencetti factored into it The Hanso Foundation and it's there work that ultimate makes the equation accurate. That's the thing with prophecies, if the predictions include your actions apon hearing the prophecy there is not much you can do to escape it.

It's a bit like Odin trying to stop himself being eaten by the Fenris Wolf. :)

Okay I know I'm not the first person to suggest that, but it's my current theory now and I did call the apparent (at least as a plot element) flexibility of the equation. When people were saying it was all about surviving the apocalypse, I was saying it was about avoiding (or causing) it. Yay for me.

Now after a brief moment of smugness I'll get back to being bored.

I'm wondering how many people even care about these reveals now though. HE and WIA have pretty much torn the heart out of this ARG (or at least the adrenal gland)

I agree Maven,
That is the only good that has come of the Apollo events. The fact that we are getting to meet one another, sure not everyone wants their pic up on WIA.com, but in person it is hard to hide your face (unless you ARE a ninja... lol) I think it is cool that we get to meet each other, and discuss the ARG as well as the show since, and I have said this before, a conversation takes paths while these comments tend to stay focused. (not putting down the comments here) A ten minute conversation can veer off in ways that these comments really can't. I know when I was hanging out with Marcus, Lostnuts, Dman, Ladyoftheflies, and the others at the Central Park event, it was really cool to put faces to the names and personalities to those names as well. The meeting others is the only good to come of this, and hopefully there will be more cool people at the Sept. 6th event

I just emailed KABC7 tv here in L.A. re the Sept. 16th Viceroy event in Santa Monica. I wanted confirmation that this was going to happen, and the bars will be there. They seem to be co-sponsors of the event.

Fenris: I agree that the VE can be manipulated. That's what TWM figured out at the VIK Institute with the savants. However, he and his gang seems really rushed to get all the pieces in place (seems like last minute testing of this virus and doing genetic workups). By making changes in the environment, the equations can be controlled somehow.

Belly, I respectfully disagree for this reason. We know that People mag comes out every Friday (or whenever). On Friday, Mr./Ms. HE.com programmer-updater wakes up, looks at the schedule for mag clue release that day, plugs it in and, voila, HE is ready for code entry the day the magazine is released to the rabbid ARG players. Ditto with say, Monster and it's programmer, who has been informed that a Monster ad with a clue will be on the stands on Friday. I just don't think that it could be that difficult. Unless they still at this point totally underestimate the intelligence and voracity of the ARG players even this late in the game, and think that it will take us a long time to find the clue and that they have all the time in the world to coordinate the clue/hidding place/code? :-)

Lisa: You're right. That Sept. 16th event is no longer listed! That really sucks. This giveaway phase seems very poorly thought out. Especially when non-TLErs get the candy and throw away the wrappers! They announce venues and then take them away. Very frustrating.

You know what would have been a crazy idea. Not having Acts and spreading stuff like the slow glyph hunt in with the Rachel Vids and/or hacking parts or even just starting DJDan at a later date or spreading the podcasts out a bit to keep things going.

The worst thing about this ARG is the timing and general organisation. That is where heads would need to role. It's not been planned very well at all. The story would have seemed a lot better if it hadn't had it's flow ruined by the overall organisation of the ARG and the continued farcical chocolate releases in the states hadn't made a mockery of it all at a time where there is little else of substance to grab on to.

I don't know about anyone else but it's slowed down so much I'm starting to forget minor plot elements and am definetly rapidly loosing any emotional investment I may have had in any of the characters and/or story.

I know a few people that have left out right. But I'm no quitter! I'll be here till the end and beyond. Good job we've got a good, wide and interesting community to keep things going. Also a good job Speaker is a one man entertainment machine too. I very much doubt his videos were planned at the start but they're about the most interesting thing going on on the non-player side of things right now.

Manufacturing candy bars have had to been done quite a while ago. It's not something that is done at the last minute. You would think that a better plan for distribution could have been worked out and coordinated. Announcing venues, pulling them, changing them is a sign of something seriously wrong with this ARG.

I'm hoping that once the video is put together, and we figure out the meaning of Apollo, things will get back on track. I'm not quitting...just very aggravated how TPTB are playing with our emotions!

Stupid, I know, but the thought did cross my mind.

Fenris had a good point earlier...this part of the game has gone on so long and slowly that I've forgotten earlier plot points as well. During the first part of the game, we had Persephone and then Rachel. We were working with her, hearing from her, we had a partner in this. Then this video came along and we've been rudderless for weeks. It was very exciting and dramatic when Rachel unveiled hansoexposed at ComicCon, but that wore off quickly once the drudgery of the glyph hunt progressed. I'm shocked that a writer would allow that to happen.

But we hung in there and kept building our video even though the urgency had waned. Heaven knows how many Sri Lankans have been infected and killed by now. But we were promised "something that would burn a hole in the Hanso Foundation".

Then we get this crazy candy bar search which gives us no clues, but forces us to post our photos online in order to prove our loyalt to Rachel. When she thinks there are enough of us minions on board, THEN she's gonna reveal something else big???? What the....?

This game is not just all over the place, it's downright incoherent.

sigh

I believe that you are very correct about this, it is an issue that I had not thought of, and it is a good point to keep in mind. Often once a project has been launched, TPTB move on to the next project and leave the remaining follow-up and finish to the folks left behind, and when problems happen TPTB have no interest in regressing their efforts in assistance to the "old project". OK, half of my Pollyanna-ness has returned, thx. :-)

I don't think ABC is losing money on this game. Jeep, Verizon and Sprite are getting major web traffic every time they post a glyph. That's extremely valuable to a marketer. Especially since we have to plow through product descriptions to get to the clues (crush zones, removable flashlights anyone?) The cost to add a code or glyph to a print ad is pretty minimal, especially since it doesn't really involve any design change, just finding an empty space like a curb and dropping a word in. I would be willing to bet that ABC worked out a trade deal as part of an overall ad buy that allows free placement of codes, glyphs and videos in exchange for driving tens of thousands of people to their sites and ads.

Belly got his rant. Now I get mine.
I'm just going to interject my 2 cents here...take it or leave it...

We've got writers and we've got marketing. We can fast forward through the marketers' commercials when we watch LOST on our TiVos. We have to wade through and sometimes dissect marketers' commercials when we play The LOST Experience. The marketing campaigns interrupt our TV show and are a hindrance and a distraction to the story but, in both cases (Television & ARG) they are NECESSARY to bring the story to the masses. Marketing is a necessary evil when it comes to the entertainment industry. As people interested in the story, we have to maintain the ability and commitment to SEE THROUGH THE MARKETING AND FIND THE STORY.

I still believe in our creative producers & writers. I believe that Carlton & Damon are the heart behind this show and this ARG and that they want to share with us an important piece of mythology. I still believe a story is there. I believe that they have been forced to allow this much marketing and I believe they took a risk to bring us this ARG and I believe that many compromises and much trepidation was involved. I'm still looking for our story and I'm also enjoying what we've gotten so far. It takes work though. More work than fast-forwarding the TiVo. We have to be discerning and have the ability to quickly dismiss anything that isn't pertinent to the story and move past it. The history of Apollo, the Hackett Memos, the sign language video...these are important. I read that. I analyzed that. The organization of a candy bar giveaway is irrelevant to the story. I have dismissed it. I mean, do we really care about a candy bar that much? I could care less about meeting a hired hand Apollo tshirt person who knows nothing about LOST. I care more about what it all MEANS.

The marketers aren't our friends. They don't care about the story and they don't understand or care about our experience. I wish we could all just take a deep breath and accept this as fact. Now let's remember: The writers and creative geniuses are our friends. They care about the story and they understand and care about our experience. But they CAN'T CONTROL the marketers. They are forging a story DESPITE the marketers and we need to find it. My final word: I wish we could spend more time finding the story than complaining about the marketers.

Take it or leave it.

I agree with Vex, there is no question that ABC is making money off of this, and not losing any. One last thought...I know we joke around about the interns running the show, but Jeep, Verizon, Sprite and Monster are all very big advertising spenders. It doesn't seem right that they would leave those brands in the hands of interns. Especially with the mounting frustration of tens of thousands of people who are now pretty edcucated on their products. We could easily become spokesman/advocates "hey, you're thinking about buying a jeep, did you know..." or vocal naysayers "Jeep? Man they were part of this crappy gig with ABC".

I completely agree and that is why I am not going to go crazy over not getting a bar of LSD laced chocolate. I know when it first came out I was really excited, then the yanked it and I was going to walk. And then I relaized that I was going to turn my back on this community, the story that WE have forged together from the begining. I did not want to do that. Because, like you David, love the story and want to see how it ends. Sure it stinks that they are not as organized as we wish them to be and we aren't thrilled with being brain washed into buying sprite and SUCH. This has been a wonderful experience for me and there is very little that will change my experience so far. At the end of this I know that I have made some long lasting friendships online or otherwise. And although this phase is not as engrossing we still find a way to comment over 400 times on almost no subject. So without ALL of us there would be no ARG.

Re: My rant.
I posted my opinion out of my attempt to try to put myself in the writer's shoes. I could be wrong but I imagine them sitting there each time something gets screwed up banging their heads against the wall in frustration screaming, "WE TOLD THEM EXACTLY WHAT TO DO! We told them who, when, where, why, and how! Why won't those marketers freaking listen?!" Why won't the marketers' listen? A) They don't understand us & they don't care that much about the story and B) They've got the money and the power and their hit-counts are spiking so there are no perceived consequences for them.

When you're coordinating something this large scale, there is only so much you can do. I know I'm kind of in the minority here but I really do feel sorry for the ARG creators, writers, etc b/c I feel like they are facing much more ignorant opposition than they expected and their hands are tied.

Okay. End rant.

Sure things may be horribly awry, but that is eventually going to happen to anything that is done on the fly. This community here is the only thing that is keeping my interest anymore. I care nore about what you all have to say then what TPTB have to say in the game. This game could be over and I wouldn't even realize it until someone in here said something like...
"What that's it... what a lame ending."
I would then of course ask what ending they were referring to and think to myself, as I got all the different responses from everyone, I can't believe it's over. I visit all the blogs and boards out there most of the time and people are always just chit chatting, while we here tend to have real discussions on the matters at hand. I think that in the end the only thing this game has acomplished in a good way is this blog and the attatched message board, which moves at a anails pace in this phase of the game, The people here are great and I think that there are new relationships forming everyday that never would have if the ARG didn't exist. I am not quitting, since I never have before, but it makes me want to hurry up and wait for the rest to play out and be done with. It is a shame it all went down this way, but at least we got each other.

David, You have a lot of fair points about the unfortunate aspects of the game imposed by marketing interests, but I think you are letting them off too easy. If it were just botched a candy bar giveaway, then you'd be totally right, but now part of the story hinges on the successful collection of a large number of bars, which people just can't seem to get. If they wanted to have that part of the game as a low budget sidebar then fine, but if they are going to do such a piss-poor job then they shouldn't have made the bar counter a prerequisite for anything.

Little things like improving timing on HE.com are not controlled by marketers. That's someone's job. These people aren't volunteers. I think it's pretty clear that the quality of this production has continued to degrade, and when that happens it takes away from the story. Obviously we are all in it for the story, but there are only so many distractions and inconsistencies one can take before it really does hurt the underlying story.

I know that I personally don't mind the marketing or the advertsing that much. I think most people feel that way. Having to find a clue by navigating a commercial website doesn't ruin it for me. Feeling like the people behind this game aren't putting in the effort that I am does bother me. I think it's hard to refute that even with all of this marketing and more, the execution of this game has been pretty shoddy.

I liken it to going to a movie, even the most hamfisted product placements can be overlooked. They may take you out of the experience momentarily but you can accept that. It's much harder to accept when the projectionist keeps interupting the film, or you lose audio, or the lights in the theater keep coming on. At that point it's impossible to really enjoy the film.

Many of us feel cheated, some would argue that since this experience is provided for us at no cost that we have no real cause to complain. I would argue, however, that the time and effort we spend doing this (that is in fact required to be involved) entitles us to more, especially considering that that time and effort is what drives the advertising revenue that ends up paying for this game.

In short you can like an actor without liking every performance. I hope they can turn this around.

CRISY JUST TOLD ME THIS IN IM:

just been on the phone with the special events coordinator for the kipona festival in PA this saturday, and they not only don't know anything about it, but i guess i'm not the only phone call they received. ...

I think part of the problem here is the disconnect between the Apollo Candy Company and the event being put on by ABC - I assume this coordinator isn't following TLE.

There is probably some kind of "ABC" event scheduled with festival that the coordinator knows about, but by us staying "in-game" and talking only about the Apollo candy, they don't realize the connection.

I has a similar converstion with someone here in Lexington, KY. When I initially contacted them about the "Apollo Candy Giveaway", I was told they don't know anything about it, and that Apollo Candy did not have permission, yada, yada...

Only after explaining that this was all part of the show "Lost" on ABC, was I able to get some information. I was told that they didn't recognize the "Apollo" name, but they did have plans with ABC, but the details were still being worked out.

I'm guessing/hoping that things will be worked out there in PA. If plans fall through, hopefully they will be able to add something on to the end or make it up some other way.

I think these rants/discussions are very helpful. We are making and sharing observations on the workings of the game and yes, even if we're frustrated or we disagree, we are very civil about it. These discussions allow us to get different perspectives on those putting the game together and develop a bigger picture perspective of the process and results. As a marketing professional, I can see and comment on that aspect of the project. It's helpful to also see through the writers' eyes, the event managers' eyes, the programmers' eyes...you get my meaning. I wouldn't be able to do that without this group sharing their knowledge and experience.

So I don't think rants are bad at all. Maybe I'm naive, but I think they help build our community.

wow... what a comments section this afternoon... Been reading all the rants and rebuttles.... wow. I know that with all the mix ups and such that have occurred, I have lost some of the story behind the ARG. But, I love the ARG because it keeps me on my toes waiting for Season 3 to begin. Considering there are around 35000 players internationally, I expect that this is definitely and "expiriment" for all involved, including us as players. I know this is my first ARG experience.

I think this community is the most important part of the whole experience. How else do you get so many DIFFERENT people to communicate so vividly. So many shared ideas and theories... so many discussions that are not arguments but actually discussions. What a great environment for a first time ARGer....

Thank you TLEC for being here for us!

Wow, people really are upset. I think it's my fault for starting the day with a rant against Doctor Who on ITE. Lol

Anyway to steer my own thread back to the story.

Maven - just caught up (or down, I work backwards in the comments, which isn't wise, I just do it anyway). Your right about Mittelwerk seeming hurried. I suspect the idea is the end of the world is due very soon.

What I get from it so far is this:-

The Dharma initiative was an attempt to alter the non-constant parts of the equation so as to stave off the end of the world. "We all know the Dhrama initiative failed" (although it sounds like Gailed to me, but why would it gail? lol). So the end of the world is drawing close and "they have to take radical action".

Not being able to alter the environment they are planning to kill all people with certain gene sequences that make them somehow "bad" (we're the "good" guys?). This takes away the possibilities equated that suggested the end of the world was infact nigh. So that does mess up Hanso because Rachel has video proof (which she apparently couldn't take to like the police or the UN) that they are murderers, but also means that Mittlewerk may perhaps have a point.

The chocolate bars were to be the way of spreading the virus world wide to purge the "bad" people. But now he's got another delivery system (Sprite? They maybe would market themselves as potentially leathal, you never know)

Now the plot twist would have to be 1 of 3 things.

1) The Valencetti equation doesn't work
2) Mittelwerks plan is the only way to save us dying sometime soon
3) Mittelwerks virus actually kills good people, not bad ones.

The one true way = the one chain of enviromental and genetic factors in the equation that does not lead to the end of the world at any point. Maybe?

We're all lemmings in the Hanso Foundations grand scheme of world conquest (destruction?). What's on ABC tonight instead of Lost? A special 20/20 about the end of the world.

My thoughts on the "big twist" at the end of Rachel's video? That when enough Apollo Bars are found the last segment will be revealed. The last segment will be longer that the others and it will feature Mittelwerk announcing his successor... his daughter Rachel. And those that drank the Kool-Aid (i.e. ate the chocolate bar) will all die, setting off the final variable in the Valenzetti Equation.

Muhahahahahaha

Or we find out Joop has been behind everything from the beginning.

Fenris, I like your theories.

I think what makes the not-so-great aspects of this part of the ARG are so hard-felt, is that the game started out being so vibrant. We were given websites, videos, codes and images to breakdown and crack with one leading to the next. Now we wait, which is OK. Maybe if the beginning started slower and ramped up to the intrigue of the first two phases, it would have a feel of more continuity (except the difference between the UK and US distributions is just perplexing). It plays like the way the movie "Logan's Run" started out at such a great clip, and then came to a screeching halt when they got to the part about the old guy "outside". If the Apollo aspect was an late ad-on, that might account for the difference in tempo as well.

Deleted and re-posted, b/c of my gramatical errors (due to lack of sleep/coffee):

Arrested??! Are you kidding me?

Well, in a way, I can kind of understand that kind of overreaction. They don't know what's going on, and figure that this could just be some group trying to cause problems. They figure if they issue these big threats, that they can scare people out of potentially disrupting their event.

ABC must not be communicating at all with these event people, because they always seem clueless and pissed off when someone asks about it.

The people at the Central Park concert were nice to me when I asked about it. I think that was because I was the first to ask, was careful to be polite and brief, and showed interest in the event itself.

However, as they were questioned by more people and had no info to give them, they became irritated. When the Apollo people arrived, the staff got aggravated and strict. They said that the Apollo staff was not allowed to hand out candy bars because they could be used as projectiles and cause injuries during the concert. They also tried to usher out anyone who seemed to be waiting for the bars.

I doubt that all of these event staff members are typically rude or short-tempered. I think that they are all having these kinds of reactions because they are not getting any info, and have to quickly respond to something that they have no details about. Their gut reaction is to turn people away and avoid the problem, because they have no way to clear things up.

I have worked at events both as part of the event staff (at some concerts) and as part of promo giveways and fundraising tables, and this is just my assessment of it. Whenever there is good communication, you generally avoid this kind of stuff.

ANYWAY, I have to say that while I preferred the beginning of it, I really have enjoyed the LE.
It has been a fun way to pass the time between seasons, which is what it was intended to be.
I have also enjoyed the opportunity to meet some fun people who share the same interests.

First, I'll just assume you have never been to Lexington, KY :) I doubt the cancelled Chicago so the could come here to Lexington.

Second, I don't think it is so much that they can't find Chicago, or that they've never heard of it. I'm guessing there was probably a reason why they had to cancel that event. Most of the events have been part of some other event that was already going on: Acura events, fesitval, Lost Previews, etc. It sounds like the event in Chicago fell through, and they couldn't continue there without it. Obviously they would have to remove the date, until a new one is scheduled. It took them almost two weeks to post the time for the date here.

I would be patient. Apollo dates have been added, and changed, and details are continually being updated. I'm sure there is a lot of negotiating involved in throwing one of these events, and if something new is worked out, they will post it.

Fly-over states...

Yeah, but what was Minnesota?

(you can't tell but I just typed that with an accent)

I think part of our frustration with TPTB at the moment is actually due to them doing so well for the rest of the game.

For the sites, almost EVERYTHING has gone LIVE when it was READY. Even WIA.com. We knew the site was theirs but it didn't go live until it was up. The Apollo site has had its events go up and then down, then modified, then modified again.

Had TPTB (or just the sub-level of people in charge) NOT PUT UP APOLLO GIVEAWAY DATES until the very week before... hell, even the DAY BEFORE, I don't think we'd be complaining. The ON-STAGE corrections-wiggles have been irritating because it's led us on.

Handling the giveaways CAN'T be an easy job. Fine. Take as long as you want. But don't get our hopes up with events 'cause internet DISAPPOINTMENT manifests itself in internet RANTING and COMPLAINING.

8/30/2006 04:34:00 PM
Blogger k.barrick said...

And when I talk about TPTB, I'm actually talking about the hands-on people in charge of making the game work. Damon and Carlton (more likely, Javi) and the writers/creators of the game have done more for us than any other show. We've had a non-fiction book. Web site after web site. A Comi-Con extraveganza... a whole world to explore in their normal DOWN-TIME. The fact that JAVI HIMSELF played DJ DAN is proof that the people who wrote/created this IMMENSELY CARE about this game and about us, the fans.

If anything, I believe that our anger can be interrpreted as being pissed that these sub-levels of management our screwing this game up. Screwing the TRUE PTB (Lost writers) and TPTM (US, The People That Matter). Lost is a big show for ABC, etc. They should be more careful with it.

Capcom - LOL. I hadn't thought about the similarities with Logans run. It does throw you off a bit. Yet I still ended up liking that film so maybe there is hope yet.

Having said that, it has a somewhat mixed reaction from sci-fi fans. A lot of them hate that part way slow down so it does suggest it's a bad structure for such a thing.

But yeah, that's what I reckoned as well. It's not so much the individual parts or the plot that is the proble, just the way it's been structured and presented to us. They should have built up and up.

--------Silly Analogy Warning----------

Despite being a huge movie buff, I've not been to film school and wouldn't consider myself any kind of expert on script writting or anything. Same for TV really (or ARGs for that matter). However I do know music, because it's what I do and I've had a fair bit of training in that. So I feel I can (hopefully) make some kind of music analogy:-

One of the biggest rules of songwritting (now this isn't something you *have* to follow, like all rules in a creative medium) is to have a high point of excitement at the 2/3rds point. If there are any slower parts (like a double length verse) they would be at the begining. The 2/3rd point is where 90% of Rock tracks have guitar solo's and pop tracks have some kind of bridge. So far TLE is a rock song that goes something like this:

ROCKING SOLO - CHORUS - VERSE - CHORUS - VERSE - VERSE - CHORUS- INTRO - SHORT GUITAR FILL* - INTRO - BADLY IMPROVISED JAM SECTION WITH LOTS OF MISTAKES - INTRO - (outro?/rest of song to come)

* That'd be the Live DJ Dan thing. Great, but being a one off only counts for 2-4 bars.

Obviously a song like that would just confuse people and really start to loose people around the 2/3rds mark and heading towards the end and just leaves people with a fear of the dreaded "truck drivers gear shift" at the end (the cheesiest compositional gimmick in the world, where, at the end of the song after a few repeated chorus' you transpose the chorus one tone up and repeat to fade)

Okay, that was completely pointless. Nevermind.

8/30/2006 05:06:00 PM
Blogger Fenris said...

Should note the INTRO's are really really long. Maybe that should read INTRO - INTRO - INTRO per each "INTRO".

Gosh, what great rants today. I think I agree with every one of them! The number one thing for me regarding this ARG was the story and trying to understand what was happening on the show. The number two thing has been the great TLEC community (I have always referred to it as T.L.E.C. -- tleck never entered my mind. lol). For my first experience ARGing, this has been wonderful and educational. I find the why and wherefore of the story fascinating (while the mechanics of finding and solving clues are vital to propel the story, it's the least important part for me). Like most everything nowadays, marketing is just part of life. Major screw-ups have occured (and are still occuring), but TPTB must have their hands tied slightly by THEIR Powers that Be (who are paying the bill). Even though we are all finding this phase very boring, frustrating, erratic, and slow, I believe we are building up to something that will help us understand everything that has gone on so far.

I, for one, will stick this out come hell or high water...just to see how this story "ends". And to keep up this great discussion with all of you people.
