The Lost Experience Podcast Episode 11

"Rough Re-entry" is the sub-title of this podcast. After missing a week and only having glyphs to work with, we had a tad bit of writer's block when planning this podcast. William and I fought about whether or not to post this recording...it's definitely not our best work...maybe even a little embarrassing. Regardless of quality, we wanted to give you something. We promise next week's will be way better.

Hi all, I have been just a lurky-loo up to this point, but now I'm ticked off. I spent considerable time yesterday putting all my fragments in order, and I saved it about five times just to be safe. Today when I logged on to plug in this morning's installment, all but eight of my fragments were back up in the holding area and I have to start all over again. Argggg! Does anyone have any suggestions on how to best save their configuration besides just using "save"? BTW, thanks mucho to everyone here for all the effort put into sharing and communicating together, and for the awesome laughs as well. I also happened to think a few days ago about what will happen to this "community" when all of the game is said and done. I just retired from "Big-Blue" (finally!)this Spring, and following the game and this TLEC and blog have been a great way to spend my first summer in retirement. Ciao, and thanks in advance for any help on my "save" problem.

capcom-I share your frustration. here is what I had to do to finally get my sequence to save. Warning it is a process, but I haven't lost a sequence in 3 days now!
1. I put all of my clips in order.
2. I hit save and click my sequence link.
3. I go to view the sequence and if it says anything other than the correct amount of clips/#released (today would be 27/28 as an example), I go back to sequence edit.
4. Back at the sequence screen I individually move each clip from it's sequence slot to storage and back again, then re-save, and re-check until the #sequenced/# of clips is correct.
I DO NOT close HE.com until the number is right.
It is a pian but it has actually worked!

Blogger NiteSea said...

capcom,

I've been keeping a separate list of the order I think the frags go in so in case mine get jumbled by HE.com I don't have to go back and figure out where each one goes. With the glitchiness of that site, it's better not to rely solely on it . Some people are also downloading the clips to their hard drive and arranging them themselves in a playlist.

8/04/2006 10:51:00 AM
Blogger Capcom said...

Copy that ange, thanks! I will try out that system for saving. It's still far fewer steps than sorting the entire sequence all over again! :-p

Blogger Capcom said...

Thanks to you also, nitesea. I started keeping a list too, but did not finish writing it down last night before I logged off HE.com, my bad. Unfortunately, even though I worked at a computer company for 32 years, I don't know how to download the clips yet, I'll have to see if my nephew can help me out there. Ciao and thanks again for the tips.

capcom: Yes, I'm keeping a separate typed list of the frag codes/scene description/dialogue and I update it as new frags are found. I know I for one have become complacent Thrasher. I have looked at the usual suspects for glyphs this morning , but the pattern seems to be one easy one (on an in-game site like DJ Dan or GaryTroup), then one in a randomly weird place like a foreign blog or in an actual location that is nowhere near where I am at the moment. I figure since the DJ Dan one is out there then the next one will be the obscure one that we will need a further clue to get. My theory may be wrong, but it seems like that is how it is going so far.

Marcus/Oodles/Thinblue: I have been "lurking" over your lively and informative discussions about the crash, time and location problems. Everything is so well-laid out and presented elogently. Great points are made and backed up. The 2004/2006 issues has always bothered me. It's an easy out for TPTB to just say time is not what it seems on the island. OK ange, I give up. I've been using your saving/check-sequence tactic, and it NEVER saves my sequence correctly now. And the last two times I did it, it says that I have "00/00"!!!!! Frappitt. It's just not fun if I have to sit here and save/check the sequence 139 times before it gets it right. I wrote my code sequence down this time, but I've had it with the HE site, I can't get it to work for me anymore and I barely have the patience to sort all 70 of these things as it is, let alone when the site is acting buggy and fighting me. I'll just do it vicariously through you all if you don't mind. Raspberries! :-P

Considering the lack of activity it was actually a pretty good podcast. I was particularly impressed with the Fresh Prince bit. That was sheer class. It's funny what people can get up to when trying to fill up the space.

Plus I think you dealt with the disapointment over Act 3 pretty diplomatically. I know a few people in the chat room that have had much harsher things to say about it.

TVM, DHARMA, island stuff:
I think it's entirely possible that TVM and Alvar Hanso aren't on the same side of things. Something happened that caused Alvar to disappear. TVM took over but may not have been let in on all the secrets Hanso had. I hope that we'll get to see some kind of drama happen between them.

Hi again,
The only thing resembling a hint I've seen + heard today is OtherGirl going on about watching Dr. Who (a VERY popular UK Sci-fi series - I've never seen it though) PLUS an e-mail by a guy called Daniel to the admins in todays podcast who said he reckoned OtherGirl might sound like Billie Piper from Dr. Who (leaving the podcasters a bit at a loss it seemed).
That cannot possibly be a coincidence.
BTW Speaker also mentioned Billie Piper back in June for some reason.
The only bit of news today on the Channel 4 site that mentions Billie Piper is http://www.channel4.com/news/content/news-storypage.jsp?id=25756020
Smack in the middle of it is an ad for a music event: XBOX LOST & SOUND
If you click on the ad you get to a flashy flash site. Go to the "Tour caravans" and under 'gaming caravan' it says "Take in the unique decor & discover some hidden treats". Right underneath are links for downloading wallpaper (taking in decor?). I downloaded both hoping to find a glyph inside but no.
The xbox lost & sound caravans are visiting Rip Curl Boardmasters in Newquay from 31st July-6th August, so maybe there is a real-life glyph in the gaming caravan? Anyone in Newquay UK?

so has anybody been checking out the websites for the foreign Lost TV stations? (Lostpedia link given earlier)? If not, are there people on here that speak some of the languages on those sites and would be able to understand what they're looking at, rather than having to rely on a free translation site?

8/04/2006 06:48:00 PM
Blogger Fenris said...

I don't even know where Newquay is and I'm in the UK. Lol.

I'm shocked people don't know of Doctor Who. To be honest this last season was disapointing, largely because they ruined the Cybermen. Plus they laid on the romantic involvment between the doc and his assistant a bit too heavily. But regardless, it's worth a watch. The first of the new versions seasons (save for the finale) was excellent.

Anyway, I digress. I'll keep my eye out for Doctor Who related stuff this weekend. Even though it's obvious tOG will be giving out links to real life clues, I still find it hard to pay attention to her. I don't know why. I think maybe it was because she kept going on about Big Brother (for me, "Big Brother" is ironically what is in my personal "Room 101", if you catch my drift). I am betting she isn't Billie Piper, so either it is a clue or just some wierd co-incidence.

I've always felt it was wrong to call Oranguatangs monkeys, they may take offense. Lol. But anyway, My Monkey is called "Spider". How confusing is that?

Nothing on the German Lost forum... looked around most their site too and didn't see anything that might point to glyphs. They haven't even started on Season 2 yet, though, so it seems they wouldn't be much involved in the ARG, not even knowing what's down the hatch, let alone who THF is (though they do have a THF commercial with a German voiceover on the site). So maybe we can narrow down the countries we look at based on who's into the 2nd season...?

That's freaky about Billie Piper. However, I kinda suspect there is nothing in this, at least not directly to do with Billie herself. Just because Doctor Who is *VERY* BBC, and I can't see Channel Four doing any kind of link up likely to publicise a rival channel. Of course Billie has left Doctor Who now, but as far as I'm aware she's not due to start doing anything on C4. It's a bit random. There could be something going on at a music event though, that would be very C4. But getting anyone to there may not be so easy.

Fenris, it's interesting that you say a music event ('hosting' a glyph) would be very C4. After all, it's called Lost & Sound and the site talks about a 'hidden treat' in the gaming caravan.
That must be it.
I think Newquay is in Cornwall?

Marcus,
The 'catseye' glyph was released on the 24th, found on the 25th, and finally 'delivered' to us by Ninja on the 26th.
The AXN East Asia site was last updated on the 24th so I guess that shows the glyph was out there on the web alright but on a site that none of us knew about. Catseye probably just doesn't frequent the US/GB/AUS blocks.

ps
yep ROI (but I watch too much telly as it is... it'll come along one day)

The only thing I found weird about the glyph on the Korean site was that the image didn't link to HE.com like the rest of them have so far.

marcus- Did you see on TLEC clues main page where they had the link to the Korean glyph with a picture under clue #91?

nitesea- Not all of the glyphs we have been given have linked to HE.com...3 that did not are:
-The first Doc Jensen one on EW
-The most recent one on Channel 4 linked through Rachel Blake and The Hansos
-The one on garytroup.net
It is very likely that the Korean glyph was legit even if it didn't link.
My question, why wouldn't there be glyphs on non-english web sites?

Yeah, that bugs me too. At first I thought they would be some kind of key or hold a hidden message, but with as many as we've gotten without pictures, it's not looking like that's likely anymore...

So I thought this site was supposed to automatically update when a new code was saved in a sequence...

Blogger NiteSea said...

Mikey-
It says at the top of the page: "The following table is automatically updated when new fragments are released and the codes themselves will automatically be shown once users begin to add them to their sequences."

The way I understood it was that when a new glyph is entered, it will track the saved sequences and find anything it doesn't recognize as having been there before...

Morning all,
Great find, Froggr!
Marcus, korijane has correctly stated why I suspected EW magazine, not realizing that was last week's cover (it said August 4).
While #28 obviously wasn't hidden away in that xbox Lost & Sound gaming caravan in the UK I still have a notion there could be something there (later glyphs I mean). That particular event at Newquay runs until Sunday 6. The music stage and gaming caravan move on to other events in the UK. (see xboxlostandsound.com)

Great job frogger! I just want to vent for a moment on how obnoxiously annoying it is that this code , NANITE, was found in a magazine without a glyph. If you say they are going to be in glyphs then put them there for goodness sakes! Clearly frogger was able to find the glyph without any clue to go on and using a little guess work, but for a phase that is already glitchy, frustrating, and a little slow, could they PLEASE just stick with the program! I would be much less irritated if the People code was in an actual glyph. TPTB need to pull it together!

Boy that's wierd about the NANITE code. Why did they change tactics? Does that mean the glyphs themselves aren't important and the names won't amount to anything once we're done?

Anyway, here's this for our Saturday between glyphs:

Q: What is in the middle between Act I and Act V?

A: Intermission

Excellent work frogg3r!

What I like about this glyph-hunt is that it took a while and required a bit of thought and hunting to get there. When was the last time it took us all day to find something? So, yay to TPTB for making it a little harder.

BUT, I'm with Ange. If TPTB are going to lay out the ground rules, we're going to follow them. This glyph hunt had NO GLYPH. What? And what was with Rachel telling us she couldn't trust the mainstream media to help get her message out? Yet she uses PEOPLE magazine to hide a code? C'mon.

I think what's making this part of the game so frustrating is that we're being knocked around like pinballs...search the web, watch the blogs, fragment released but not activated for hours, handouts from Speaker, Ninja just happens to stumble across one, look in People magazine sprite ads? It's just too random for many of us who enjoyed researching and working the puzzles and being rewarded for our hard work with a new clue/video. We got used to one set of rules and now it just doesn't seem like there are any.

Morning all! (one more "session" before I leave for 3 weeks)

Gosh, this latest code is so aggravating. Great work by froggr! I had gotten my People, but immediately packed it to read on the plane! Imagine flying 30,000 feet and seeing that clue! LOL In reality, I would NEVER have noticed that! I agree with you fasten and ange: TPTB keep changing their rules! Maybe that's part of the game...but it's not fair to tell us one thing and bein to do something completely different. I'm almost glad I'm leaving the game for 3 weeks. The hunt for the rest of the "glyphs" is going to be so frustrating...I'm alsmot relieved to leave it to you guys. I feel sorry for all of you! This is not fun now!

Morning/Afternoon/Evening All.

Marcus - Well, I was speaking strictly in the Orwellian sense of Room 101. So there isn't a list as such, just one thing and that thing is the worst thing imaginable. Which for me would be being strapped down with my eyes glued open, kept awake with drugs and forced to watch an entire series of Big Brother from start to end live. I wasn't really a fan of reality TV to begin with. It was a bit of a novelty and now it has been drawn out endlessly (pressumably because it's cheap to make) and really it isn't something capable of developing, at least without it becomming something terrifying ("Next up! We grab someone randomly off the street and torture them to death! Tune in!"). It is really a step in the wrong direction for television and has pretty much set creativity in entertainment in general back a good 25 years IMHO. Fortunatly there are still shows out there that are both quality and popular enough not to be axed that are stopping TV from completely destroying itself. But Reality TV is here to stay, for Channel Four it's been a licence to print money and a bigger thing then their movie company, which has on the whole been very good. But interestingly enough seems to have had less development and doesn't seem so cutting edge anymore and that is something that seemed to devlope about when C4 decided to invest more in reality TV. Co-Incidence? I don't think so.

Anyway, you got me ranting now. Lol. If I was doing the list thing there would be a lot to choose from, so if you seriously want one I'd have to come back to you on that!

Oodles - Yeah I think your right. But there is no way I could get to Cornwall this weekend (infact It'd be kind of too late to do it now anyway I reckon) and I certainly wouldn't go just on the off chance. We can only hope that there are some festival goers that are also Lost Experience fanatics that will check it out.

Marcus - I'd have to debate you on the new Doctor Who being better. Okay special effects wise maybe, but there was a *lot* of classic doctor who. Three and a bit decades worth. Sure the last two docs (6 and 7) went a bit downhill (largely due to slipping production values) but it was class before then. The Second doctors episodes were astounding for their time and I still say his cybermen were 100 times more scary then the new ones. Battlestar Galactica was class for it's time too. A lot better then Buck Rodgers anyway, and had some pretty interesting stories and angles. I wasn't sure about the new one (too many obvious productions decisions) until about half way through the first season then it really did start to grow on me and Season 2 was fantastic. Good to see that series actually get's better as it goes along rather then Doctor Who whose novelty seems to be running out about as fast as the writters run out of ideas. Lol @ The Debbie Gibson quote btw. Now that really is retro (playboy shoots aside).

No One - I guess a new thread is imminent so I better hurry up my catch up! Lol. Nanite indeed. That's an odd one, are we going to start getting words now? Once again we see that anything you see anywhere, plug into HE before you even breath a word about it.

So this is a BIGGIE then, because it seems to verify this is all about the countdown until the end of the world and that the Autistic Savants at VIK were running over the equation. Apparently just to doublecheck? That one is a little odd and does still leave it open for the numbers being the answer and not (part of) the question, although I'm still in the question camp.

Are TPTB going to back off on their no nanobots thing or was this a shout out? There's other types of nanotechnology besides nano-bots (tiny metal robots). Or are they giving us another mixed signal to keep us guessing?
