Behind the Art
I (David) just realized something really stupid that I did a long time ago. When I started this blog, I used what I believed to be the "official" TLE logo as a part of our banner and our podcast graphic. I was ignorant of the fact that TLE.com was a fan site and didn't even think about asking permission for or giving credit for the art. I just came to my senses and did some research. I wanted to finally give credit to "DocArzt" and thelostexperience.com for the artwork. I also wanted to let everyone know that they are graciously allowing us to continue using it on our site. Thanks a ton guys!

I read Bad Twin and other than a few mentions of Alvar Hanso, Widmore Corporation and TM, there wasn't really that much of the show in it. Oh, they did mention the escape hatch, which was the name of the boat that the main character chartered. It was a good read.
So is this DJ Dan podcast going to be the very last event of the LE? Beacuse if it is.. damnit, I gotta wake up early on monday morning >_<

I think the whole game, and the idea of the game, was genius. Absolutely. No other show on the planet involves the viewers so intimately. It was a blast.
My temper tantrum has more to do with it being over than disapointments.

This is a GUT FEELING. ABC just decided it wasn't worth it anymore from a marketing perspective and is pushing our friends (THE CREATIVE MINDS) against their wills to wrap this thing up more quickly than originally planned. I feel like they may have had other plans for WIA.com but were forced to adapt and make some changes to close down shop. I can't imagine all the ins and outs of "the business" out there in L.A. but I'm sure it's a mess and I bet their budgets are tighter than we'd all imagine.
I want to believe that the creative minds (like Javi & company) are still our friends and still WANT for us to have a good experience. I'm going to try to be grateful for all the cool things that happened this summer and forgot about the areas where I'm still left wanting.
Whatever happens or is happening...I met a bunch of cool people, learned a lot of new skills, dove deeper into Lost mythology, and have a lot more to look forward to Season 3 because of what happened this summer!
or maybe there is no phase 4 or 5. it could just be a 3-act structure like we originally thought. wia, the convorsation could have just been extra?

I'm going to side with admin on this thing! WIA at least to me seemed like the final proving ground. TPTB could use the Apollo bar pictures to prove that "The Experience" was a success. That it was reaching out not only to the core diehard audience (or P1's that's what we call them in radio) and penetrating the genral public (P2's). My guess is a only a thousand hits in two months was probably not what TPTB and corperate were thinking to be a success.

Well, after feeling like a baby that had it's candy taken away from her, I took a mental cold shower. Whew. Now I'd really like to say that no matter how TLE sails off into the sunset, I could not have imagined that I would meet as nice, intelligent, and funny a bunch of people as you all, on my first summer of retirement! And not only that, thanks to the Admins, we get to continue the community after it's over and there is still a Pollyanna silver lining to the dark cloud of the TLE withdrawals to come. Yay! Sniff!

You're assuming that the podcast will be accepting phone calls. After the comments that I've seen here and elsewhere, I seriously doubt they'll be taking any calls from anyone.
I am not going to cry about DJ Dan being the end. It has been fun, and also not fun, frustrating, and exciting at times, but really I am just ready to be done. I just wish I didn't have to be done at a ridiculous hour on a work night...okay a little cry...I am done now.

I'm so sad that TLE is ending. It would have been great to continue the game throughout the duration of the show as something to fill in the void between episodes. It's unfathomable that there won't be a TLE during the intersession between the first half season and the second half season.
Wow, I feel like a popped balloon knowing that the game is ending.
Also, I totally agree with Administrator because the people who came up with this game were complete geniuses. I used to study advertising and nothing has ever been so ingenious as the way they wove the show, and the marketing of the other companies (jeep, monster, etc.) in such an exciting way. I hope they win all the awards for most creative marketing strategy that exist.
I am really sad to know the end of the road has come. All I can say is that in my mind the show has even more to live up to now that we've been engaged on a daily basis in the game. How are they going to keep that same day to day energy going when the show only airs one day a week? :-)

So the podcast will be up on ABC.com not radio harvest. It looks like the podcast itself will broadcast twice once at 5 for the east coast and then again at 8 for the west.

The lost mobisodes come out during the hiatus between the fist half of season one and the second. Those shoulkd be fun!!
I'm with you Ryandrumz. I'll miss this, frustrating as it may have been. At least I'll still have hundreds of chocolate bars to mail if I get nostalgic.
passafist: I saw your theory on TLC. Love it! Although I would think that rumors of that character's demise would have been more prevelant. The character doesn't seem to be leaving the show permanently so maybe it's something awful but not permanent?
Dr. Spongey is going to be upset, that's for sure.
I feel satisfied with the Lost Experience. I learned how to decompile flash videos, I learned how to convert flash videos into avi format and I learned how to upload to youtube (note: dont use opera, use exployer) :)
Really though, it has been fun, and TLEC group is one of the nicest, AND intelligent I have met online.
I do not say this casually either. I have had a computer since 1979 and been online since 1998. Met lots of ppl, but am thankful for the humor, good nature, diverse beliefs, and the "work together spirit" of this group.
I hope we all can keep The Lost Community alive with season 3 starting in 2 weeks.

Well, if whereisalvar didn't turn out like they planned and they're ending it because of that, it sucks that they're punishing us by throwing together a crap ending and washing their hands of the whole experience. They don't give any credit to the players who were sending candy bars all over the world to make it work. And they clearly didn't count the tens of thousands of hits the sponsor sites gained.
I really like this group and this forum, but ABC should have stuck to its commitment. We held up our end of the bargain.

Admin: I had the same feeling. i was watching the numbers at the hanso exposed site, being that they were in the tens of thousands, I can't imagine that's enough hits to each site (Jeep, Sprite, Verizon, etc) to make a big enough profit for them to continue with the game.
I'm sure they see it as more of a loose loose situation. There's been lots of complaints about the game not being fast enough, smart enough, whatever. So in their mind, they aren't making us happy. And there is most likely not a big enough people playing to make the sponsors happy.
Speculatively, in their minds, the game is a failure best ditched.

Phase 5 - Conversation with Malek, the "meeting", the DJ Dan broadcast, and the interview that will happen.
As for the interview and what will happen . . . I think the interview will be with Rachel, and that she will finally talk about her motives, her family ties (or is that Growing Pains? :P ), her mother and father specifically, and many of the other things that she has so "conveniently" left out along the way this summer.
If there is a film after the interview, which seems will be the case, I'm sure it will be from the meeting that was scheduled by Malek, and will be Rachel and Alvar meeting face to face.
Just my ramblings, of course . . .
If you can't make the broadcast, the good news is that the download (maybe for the broadcast but definitely for the final video that it reveal) will be really slow when all of us access it at the same time. So waiting until it's a reasonable hour and everybody else has already had their turn has its advantages.
tptb are going to read this thread and see we dont really want the game to end. they must be crazy by now. "jeez! what do these people want already?!"
but in all truthiness, i must say that despite a few planning errors. (ok. a lot of planning errors.) i had an overall good time.
but i feel that if you are going to do something as complicated as an ARG, you don't want to half-ass it. you want to go all the way. at points, it felt that tptb were just rushing this thing out.

I'm sure someone has mentioned this before, but I haven't been checking the comments recently. Anyway, has anyone seen the Jeep Compass ad on tv? They're playing "New York Streets" just like at the very beginning of the game, in the phone messages...which means the advertisers had quite a big plan laid out for TLE. Just interesting...
Rachel confessing all on DJ Dan about her dead mother and her relationship with Alvar and her romance with Malik just has such a Jerry Springer sordidness to it.

The current DJ Dan page announcing the Sept 24th broadcast does not ask for e-mails, telephone calls, and does not mention radio harvest. It looks like this will be just another pre-recorded podcast that they happen to be giving us the time when they'll post it online.
No where else besides the new release 8:00 p.m., PT, 5:00 p.m., ET is there any indication of a second (and earlier broadcast. IMHO TPTB calculated the time difference wrong. It should be 11:00 pm ET.
Also I agree with the acts the way you laid them out Idaho Girl. Admin has confirmed that there will be a final TLEC podcast.

Heh-heh, just had a thought. When some TV shows were cancelled in the 1990s, the fans mailed in certain objects representative of the show, to the network, in protest to bring the shows back. Sometimes it worked. I suggest that we (at least those of us who didn't get Apollo bars) send irons to ABC, with a note that reads as follows:
"Dear ABC, Please accept this little iron in lieu of my not being able to participate in the Apollo give-away, therefore skewing your advertising experiment which was actually ruined by bad venue/handout planning, Apollo bars being wasted on non-Lost/TLE fans and thrown away, and the general disarray of the handout project in general. Because of this I was unable to put my picture on the WIA website and be counted as a TLE fan."

I hope that TPTB wouldn't see our "complaints" as a request to end the game. If we weren't interested, we would have just faded away. Seems like the vast majority of our complaints were for MORE game...more clues, more puzzles, more videos, more challenge. We wanted to keep playing. I wish that they would have seen that as an opportunity expand the game. In marketing, there is a term "early adopter". These are the first people to try a product and, if they like it, help a product succeed as the more tentative people learn from the experiences of the early adopters. We were the early adopters for this type of interactive experience. By playing this out to the end ABC would have benefited from our satisfaction. Sadly, they wrote us off. I'm afraid it may be a while before they try this again if they deemed this a failure and left us bummed out at the same time. I think a big chunk of players will think twice before investing the time again if there is no payoff.

Ok, I'm starting to act a little too much like a junkie who's being forced into rehab against her will.
I can empathize much more with Locke after he found that other hatch and was convinced of the futility of the button. I've been hitting f5 faithfully for months now and it's a shock to not have to anymore.

First regulars start to drop off, then members of the research blog start to drop off, then members of the TLEC podcast go, then the sound effects from the TLEC podcast, then Speaker stops doing his anagrams, then David, the only original admin with any spark of interest in the ARG anymore, has doubts about whether he should do the podcast or not, and now, after a lame HE, WIA and a poorly planned out mess of ApolloCandy that dedicated players had to clean up for them, TPTB have finally just quit on us...
I'm pretty put off about this... it's wrong. A lack of respect from fellow players in the game is one thing... I can deal with it... I can put my smile and come in here everyday with my "Good morning everyone", which is usually ignored, and go about helping, answering questions and updating the blog and trying to participate in as much of the discussion as I can, knowing that my own personal satisfaction is all I will have earned by the end of the day... I do it everyday and have done it everyday since Day 1... and I get up the next day and do it again... I enjoy it, regardless of getting on a leaderboard, finding a glyph, solving a puzzle first or getting any recognition...
I've sat here through all the fits, attacks, complaints and tantrums that have been thrown by various members of the community, either towards each other or towards TPTB... I've sat through them all with the best possible attitude... even when I disagreed with whatever point of view I have to take to keep the peace and keep as many players in the game for as long as possible, I still take that point of view... and I can deal with that...
What upsets me and what I can't deal with is disrespect from TPTB... the same PTB that have fed us marketting for the last three months and that we have followed every minute of every day... the same "powers that be" that have had a captive audience of some of the brightest minds of the Lost community for the past 4 and a half months, waiting on the edge of their seats for even the slightest, lamest clue... waiting for something from them, with dedication and loyalty... no matter how many times their heart is broken, hopes are crushed and expectations are let down, that captive audience has still been here everyday... and now it's been determined that we aren't a financially sound marketting campaign?... so we're being dropped?... our loyalty, time and dedication are being discarded?

ABC should make "I Survived the Lost Experience" t-shirts available in the ABC store. I feel I need some sort of compensation. LOL
Liddy was one of the board of directors of the hanso foundation. We never got a picture of her or a bio. It was on the original THF site.

I have lurked here for the past 4 months and I agree with Belly-o. There's a lot of groaning and griping. bugt why are we taking it out on TPTB? its not always their fault. sometimes things don't work out. These tptb did all they can to give us a god time over the lost-less summer and this is how we repay them. we dererve to have TLE taken away from us.

Well, to be a voice of optimism: I've been thrilled about this game, errors and spotty storytelling and uneven gameplay and all. I got to learn some cool things about the mythology (but not too much), play some unusual puzzles (poorly I might add!), be entertained by a decent story, learn about internet tools, meet a great group of Lost fans, party with them (with free booze!!!!) at an event, and walk away with an awesome souvenir. I have to think the marketers involved (who obviously were not experienced game masters) are pretty pleased to have solidly maintained the interest of a core group of fans and garnered a lot of publicity to keep the mainstream audience interested.
Since this is an unprecedented venture, I wouldn't think there is a standard of success they were expecting, but I would think the fact that they accomplished this with fan base intact is a big win, and one other shows will attempt in the future (hopefully with better interns!)

Here here, ryandrumz! Our admins rock and made this board a really fun place to be. You guys kept us enthusiastic and encouraged us to think positive when we got a little gripey. (and belly, we did notice when you said good morning to us. it was a really nice thing to see that every day!)
I suspect that's where a lot of this anger and disappointment is coming from. If I had just played this game by myself, it would be no big deal if it was over. I've had such a good time logging in here every day and following the discussions and having the opportunity to express myself and to be challenged and laughing at all of the jokes.

Wow! Just got home and I'm stunned. So this is it guys...left dangling over a cliff by TPTB! I never expected complete answers to all of our questions (Lost producers NEVER tell you everything), but this just seems so abrupt. It's like the powers over TPTB said: "Enough! You've gone over budget....35,000 participants are not enough to warrant anymore of this thing. Close it up NOW!"
I'm with Admin: The Lost producers are probably just as pissed off as we are. It's not their style to end this so abruptly. I truly hope they are not ultimately responsible from this stupid ending.
With that said, I don't for one second regret getting involved in this experience. I've said it many times over the summer that this is the first time I've ever done anything like this, I've learned sooooo much about my computor and how to do geeky stuff, and, most importantly, I've "met" the best group of people that understand this obsession. What a great community! Sure there have been moments of great disappointment...but we've all stuck together and got through it. We've wished each other happy birthdays, anniversaries, great vacations. We've worried when someone was sick or wasn't posting for a while. The Lost Experience was a fantastic experience. We might be slightly disappointed right now to the news today, but all in all, I haven't used my old noggin like this for a long time and enjoyed every moment with this community.
A really big thank you goes out to the Administrators of this blog. Thanks to David for sticking with it when things looked bleaked. Thanks to Thrasher and Belly for stepping up to the plate to help David out. You all were on top at the fast-moving times, and kept us going during the lulls (a little too many for a lot of us). Thank you again!

Or if we ever meet up with an ex-intern........just take them out for a few beers and get the scoop. :-)

I'm reminded of similar--yet stronger at the time--emotions I had when the greatest comedy series of all time was cut down. I speak of course of "Arrested Development." Even though it consistently won critical praise and awards, it just did not get the audience it needed to sustain itself. I agree with the idea that something like that has happened with TLE.
Well, I enjoyed TLE while I could. Seems like the most creative, refreshing things in our pop culture are the ones that get cut down in their prime.

I think it was Chekov who famously said, "never introduce a Gary Troup in the first act if you do not intend for it to go off by the third." I've certainly been wondering if Gary Troup would have any part to play in this, as he's the one majorish character who's gotten next to no screen time. I like the idea of his last video interview fragment containing information important to the plot quite a bit.

I've been thinking about those comments saying that the game is over because of the complaints and I'd like to respond.
Remember early in the game, when we had the really cool Persephone hacks? I thought the heavy water one was especially awesome. And when we had to go to the CIA factbook. We were all very excited and enthusiastic and posted very positive "feedback" to TPTB.
TPTB set a pretty high bar there in the beginning with Persephone. And I honestly liked the Rachel story. It was fun following her and supporting her.
We only started to complain when TPTB didn't keep up that initial standard. So yes, we did point out flaws and inconsistencies, but we also gave a big woohoo when they pulled off something cool.
I will not feel guilty for responding when I felt like things were going awry and neither should anyone else. A company should view a complaint as an opportunity to open a dialogue to work toward a satisfactory outcome. Sometimes TPTB did listen to us...remember when Rachel responded to our "what the heck is going on with this newspaper article?" They realized they made a mistake and found an in-game way to respond.
For whatever reason TPTB is powering down this weekend. I truly do not believe it is because of any negative comments made here or elsewhere. There were 37,000 people on HE. Maybe 50 are regular posters here. Our comments may have been reviewed by TPTB, but we are way too small of a sample size to shut this down. This was deemed an interactive experience, so we shouldn't feel bad for interacting.

Great sentiments, FYSB! Whenever something went "wrong" in the game and we let TPTB know it, we were very interactive. We tried desparately to make sense of the error, analyzed it, dissected it, and demanded explanations. Come one, didn't we have a great time? Didn't we keep coming back for more? (Although we did seem to lose some regulars along the way.) Didn't we all turn on our computor first thing in the morning to check in and see what was new? I may be slightly disappointed as this game winds down, but we all knew it would end sooner or later. It's just a little sooner than we thought.
Realistically, when TPTB and THEIR Powers That Be critique this they'll probably conclude that the numbers (not THOSE numbers) don't add up. Over 35,000 might have registered at HE, but the actual everyday playership is much smaller than that. It always comes down to the bottom line doesn't it?

Will Phase 6 explain how the Hanso Foundation reversed the rotation of the Earth to allow DJDan's live podcast to be on at 8:00 p.m., PT, 5:00 p.m., ET, per the ABC press release? (I'm guessing it has something to do with the Electromagnetic Research Initiative)
I'm with admin's general sentiments (with a little bit of bellyof desire thrown in).
Overall I choose to remember the good parts of this game. It did fizzle out at the end, but I don't blame the creative minds behind LOST for that.
Since it has fizzled out, I am frankly glad TLE is ending. I also hope that they do not beat this dead horse when Season 3 begins.
I do hope this community continues so we can discuss the show, because ya'll have been the best part of all this.
I wouldn't mind TPTB trying to resurect this ARG during the breaks in the show though.
As far as the DJ Dan podcasts - it doesn't appear that there will be call-ins since last time there was more advance notice.

Well, I have to admit, this comes as a bit of a shock that it's ending so...abruptly. I, too, figured that WIA was Act 4 while it overlapped with HE; but the coded correspondence between Malik and Rachel was so short and, well...uneventful, that it seemed more like an "interlude" to link the final two acts. I honestly expected that the final act of this game was going to be something really exciting and challenging that would take us into the premiere on Oct. 4th with a bang. I've perused over many of the comments made here and I have to agree, it seems like the reason could very well be that the past few weeks haven't gone as well as ABC had planned, and TPTB are now putting a bit of pressure on the creators to start wrapping it up. I mean, it's obvious that the writers and creators had this story meticulously planned out, and to end the game this way just seems so...anticlimactic.
Oh well, I can't say I've been that disappointed with the Experience overall. My only real regret is that I didn't get into this game from the very beginning. Even though the whole WIA/Apollo thing seemed sort of pointless, I got to meet some interesting and nice people as a result, and I do intend on continuing to post on the Lost Community board/blog after this is over.
Regardless of what happens at this point, I'm looking forward to hearing the DJ Dan podcast on Sunday night and watching that "last" video, whatever it may be. I like to think that this whole experience was sort of a "test-run" and that maybe they'll try this again next summer... perhaps something like "The Lost Conspiracy." :p It's kind of like when a company releases a sequel to a good video game that might have had a few faults: the creators and developers will try to take into account all of the complaints that people had with the first one and learn from the mistakes they made in order to make the sequel a better, more enjoyable experience for everyone. One can hope...
I definitely feel like this was indeed a great concept, though. I've actually been thinking of trying to put together something like this for another cult classic series a few years from now. We'll see...

Oh my gosh.... I drove 2 hours, then took a 45 minute BART ride to San Francisco, just to get to the Apollo/Acura event and find out only the 1st 150 people got into the VIP section!! We were too late! So my brave daughter started going up to strangers and asking if they would give her their Apollo Bar. Guess what!! It worked! So now that everything is over, I have my Apollo bar and big whoop tee doo. We did take some "tourist" shots that I will try to upload.
We didn't find any other TLEC people but there was one guy from the one of the other blogs. All in all... we made the best of a bad situation and had fun.

Just wanted to say I agree with you all. The TLE has been great and I am sure it is ABC and not TPTB that have ended but I don't care from the ashes of TLEC the Phoenix of TLC has been born. In the past one things that has put me off online chat is the flammers and trolls but TLEC has been a revelation, no flame no trolls not flame just a great bunch of people.
You know I'm note even upset that I will not be able to hear DJ Dan because I know you guys will be there for me, listening.
Anyway enough sentiment, I will be recording a short MP3 for the podcast.

I think the podcast is 4 am BST - Pacific time is 8 hrs behind us here. Really rotten timing for us, huh! Especially now we know this is the end.

I am trying to find out who was responsible for the UK arm of it, so that I can get some feedback to them. If I do, I will let you all now if I get a response.
I too am sad it is coming to a close (although my hubby is pleased he will see me in the evenings again!!) However, this has been a great community and I hugely admire Admin, Belly & Thrasher who I am sure have given up so much of their time during the summer to make this such a great place.

Sorry for the confusion, Yes I know Carlton, Damon et al work for ABC but what I meant is that the decision to end this may have come from ABC Executives rather than the creative team behind loss. Carlton & Damon have often bemoaned th epossibilities of ABC either cutting this short or dragging things out.
I think we shouldn't be to quick to attack these guys who have done a great job at trying something completely new when it is quite possible some ABC Exec, or the accounts dept or even one or more of the sponsors that have caused it to end.

Well everyone, I do want to say a big thank you to everyone out there for all of the fun(?) we've had this Summer. I've been doing this TLE thing since we first heard about "breaking strain," and I must say I'm a little sad to see it all end. My only gripe in this whole thing is similar to everyone else's. The THF.org portion of this game was hands-down the best part. It was VERY interactive and very puzzling...who could forget all the confusion over the "hole" pictures?! After that, I felt we were just being led by the nose, and the whole "puzzle" aspect got lost. I'm interested to see how this all ends, but there's no way I'm going to get the slightly bitter taste that's been left by the last few parts of the ARG.
On a side note, my wife and I did give birth to our first child, a daughter, during all of this...and, no, her name is not Rachel or Persephone.

Big Congratulations - being a dad Rocks... I have two boys and the sleepless nights, explosive nappies etc really are all worth it ;)
