Clue #128 - Fragment Code "7C8R", Jimmy Kimmel Hint, & Fragment Code "XQGRMH"

Fragment Code "7C8R" has been found. The glyph aired after the most recent LOST episode on the UK's Channel 4. The video fragment is of Mr. Beardy saying, "We will be able to change those core factors and give humanity a chance to survive."

Thanks to jason_nufc04, Chezza, Nan, Tresbien, Neil, Matthew, Tom, Alec, and Lungbutter for being the first to email us about this code!

Speaker at insidetheexperience has hinted to us to watch Jimmy Kimmel Live this week. We don't know what could happen but we're not going to miss a chance to boost Jimmy's ratings are we?!

Fragment Code "XQGRMH" was found via a Speaker glyph hunt starting at whereisalvar.com and look for a pic of Speaker with a Golden Oracle. His shirt says "Jonah 61" so we assumed he was talking about the 61st fragment code and "Jonah" was a hint. If you head over to Jonah's myspace and ctrl a (select all) the page, you'll see a bit extra in his "About Me" section. Follow his clue and look at Reader Mail 11 and you'll see Macaulay Culkin posted THIS LINK! The video fragment is of Mr. Beardy saying, " "only by manipulating the environment, by finding scientific solutions to all of our problems"

Yeah, that was my first thought, too, in regards to the speech context. However, you're right in the camera zoom, so I looked at the captures on Lostpedia, and that's how I came to it preceding rgmr. I'm still not entirely sure on the overall setup with those segments, though, aside from what they've had in the Lostpedia breakdown.

Ah-ha! Confirmed: DHARMA's goal was to alter variables in the VE so as to further delay the extinction of the human race.

Knowing this, I feel even more sure of what I've been saying for the better part of a month or so. If my reading of TWM's attitude in the later clips of the Sri Lanka video is correct, and his quickness to note that DHARMA failed is indicative of him not approving of their approach to begin with, my oft-mentioned theory about the contemporary HF people opting to alter the variables so as to hasten "the end", and wipe out a specific cross-section (i.e. those highly genetically succeptible to being a strong pathogen for a disease) of humanity to satisfy the equation, and let another cross-section survive and start over may be on the mark.

Can't wait for the remaining clips! :)

Woot (alternately "w00t") is usually just an interjection of pleasure or satisfaction. It also is a reference to woot.com, based on the context. =)

That is, if 7c8r and rgmr go in that segment of the video. For some reason, the information in rgmr never quite sat well with me in regards to where Lostpedia has placed it in the video. I imagine it will be moved to later in the video once another segment or two are released.

rubber band ninja - I'm beginning to think you're right. I think it precedes the fragments that spell out the DHARMA Initiative. The positioning right after RGMR depends on whether you think the phrase he's speaking is declarative ("we will be able...") or dependent ("will we be able...") like at the end of a sentence that starts with something like "Only if we..."

Guys!!!

On the Ninjas shirt it says Jonah 16. Thanks to paw we know that Jonah was one of the profilees at insidetheexperience.com.

On this page - http://www.insidetheexperience.com/2006/08/ite_profiles_2.html - (thanks to paw for the link) is a link to Jonah's myspace page. On his page is a link to a page called 'My Contribution To The Lost Experience'.

On that page is a link to the Lost map, made by Jonah. The title of the map is 85121816138512.jpg.

Converting those numbers to letters (1=A, 2=B, etc) gave me "HELRPACHEL" which you can obviously see is an anagram of "HELP RACHEL".

I don't know if this means anything but i'd like you guys to tell me if this has been discussed before, i want to know if it means anything :)

admin - So, that could be Reader Mails Ten and One, or Reader Mail Eleven.

In the Bible, there is both a prodigal son (not named), the story of brothers Cain and Abel (wherein Cain kills Abel) and the story of brothers Esau and Jacob (wherein Jacob steals Esau's blessing, so you could call Jacob the bad son and Esau the good). There's also the movie "The Good Son," and that good son is named Mark Evans, played by Elijah Wood. No mentions of Mark, Elijah, Esau (or Jacob, for that matter), Abel (or Cain) or "prodigal."

...whew!

I think I figured out where glyph 64 came from. If you go to Speaker's blog, Reader Mail 11, one of the first comments from user "Macauly Culkin" directs to one of the Speaker comics, where the editor in cheif is listed as 'xqgmrh' which, of course, is our glyph code.

thebookpolice - you're right, MC wasn't actually the good son, but the point of the title of the movie was that everyone THOUGHT that MC was the good son.

Whenever Elijah Wood's character claimed that MC was doing something bad, they just dismissed it because MC was such a "good son."

Hence, the title.

I think it was fitting to use "The Good Son" for this because it explored the idea of "who are the good guys anyway?" - kinda the same way TLE and LOST do. Is Alvar a good guy? Mittlewerk? Rachel? Are the others "the good ones" that they claim they are?

If #61 will be on Kimmel tonight, why was it released yesterday?
Unless TPTB mixed up the Kimmel and Speaker glyphs?
As to unsolved hints - there is, for example, still the "Yesterday 18?2" filename of the page containing #57 on the stophanso blog.

thinbluemime - You typed the code incorrectly in your comment. Make sure you're entering it correctly, as 7C8R.

jonahadkins - Yep! And I learned something interesting, if not mundane (can you have both at once?) about the show during (of all things) one of the main menu refresh screens.

The reason the Others don't leave tracks isn't anything mystical, otherworldly, or technological. It's because they have a sweeper following them. The menu screen features the scene where Eko and Jin hide from The Others, where they see the teddy bear on a wire. Those legs walking by are shown on the menu screen, except that once they all go by, another pair of legs comes through walking backwards, sweeping the path with a stiff palm frond. This wasn't in the episode in question. Kinda neat!

I was at my local library this morning (a very good and well supported public library, I might add)
I wanted to reserve a loaner copy of Lost Season 2 DVD's, so the libraian looked up the stats. Of course NO copies had actually arrived yet, BUT there were already 99 people on the waiting list, and the library had ordered 23 (I just noticed that number, LOL) copies of the Season 2 DVD set. Not a bad wait, but it illustrates the popularity of Lost. Instead of waiting, I decided to go ahead and buy, at Best Buy.

This is a question from the last thread that I'm just now getting around to answering. Apologies for the delay.
Administrator said... Matt, I do like your self-fulfilling prophecy theory. Do you believe it will be packaged by the end of TLE? If that knowledge is our "information payoff" for participating, then that knowledge will most likely be woven into the drama of the show. Without writing the show for them :), what bearing would your theory have on the plot of LOST? 9/05/2006 01:00:11 PM

Well, David, as you say, the blurbs about the Lost Experience have promised a payoff of information -- mainly that we will discover the meaning of the Numbers. However, if my self-fulfilling prophecy theory is correct, and the Numbers are indeed meaningless in and of themselves -- and we learn this by the time the game is over -- that counts as us learning what the Numbers mean. You see, it would be a sly way for the writers to fulfill their promise ("Don't get mad at us! You learned what the Numbers mean: Nothing!") while actually managing to evade the responsibility of coming up with a legitimate scientific explanation as to how the Valenzetti Equation works. At the moment, the properties attributed to the Equation border on the supernatural, and it would be exceedingly difficult if not impossible for the writers to explain how it works without cutting corners, plagiarizing, or delving into the realm of the mystical.

Alvar Hanso claims in the Sri Lanka Orientation Video that the Valenzetti Equation predicts the exact number of years and months before the end of humanity, whether it occurs through nuclear fire, chemical and biological warfare, conventional warfare, pandemic, or over-population. Now, back when we believed it only predicted the end of the world through global nuclear warfare, I had thought that it was at least mathematically probable that something like that could maybe be predicted. However, the extensive range of various man-made and natural disasters attributed to the Valenzetti Equation renders it very unlikely that the Equation is based on real science -- or even pseudo-science. It's simply too improbable to believe that Valenzetti mathematically designed an equation capable of predicting natural disasters as well as man-made ones, and that these values are also impossible to change (as we are gathering from the videos). I hope this makes it clear why I have called the Valenzetti Equation's properties near-supernatural.

However, what is more likely and possible to believe is that the Equation does not actually work. The reason that it always gives the same result is because it does not actually use any real variables from the real world -- it is like one of those tricky math things where you pick a "random" number and yet always come out with the same result. It's a simple trick designed to make people believe that the Valenzetti Equation really does predict a set date, but no one realizes that the Equation will always predict the same date no matter what is put into it because it does not actually work -- at least on its own. And that's where belief comes into play... but I believe I have already adequately explained why belief is important on my theory page.

Now, then... by the end of the Lost Experience (if my theory is correct -- I'm not holding my breath), I wouldn't expect that to be incorporated into the television show Lost. At all. The reason is that Lost is sponsored in part by the Hanso Foundation (cue SFX). Personally, I believe that the Hanso Foundation is (in part) responsible for Lost's creation. That is why the Others are going to get painted in a sympathetic light this fall. And, knowing that Lost is sponsored by the Hanso Foundation, I can practically guarantee that the Valenzetti Equation will be shown on Lost as a valid and true method of predicting the world. The Valenzetti Equation will be on Lost as something that works -- because the Hanso Foundation needs everyone to believe it works.

If it turns out that we learn that the Valenzetti Equation doesn't work, I expect it to have no bearing on the plot of Lost at all. Lost will present the Valenzetti Equation as something that is true.

I've been thinking about the Valenzetti Equation, now and then.

I remember the climate in the late 1960s and early 70s. It would have been ripe for the Valenzetti Equation. The end of the world was coming. The big issues were global warming, nuclear annihilation, air and water polution, over-population, civil unrest, and running out of oil. Many people I knew ascribed to ZPG: Zero Population Growth. Everyone was sure that the world was going to hell in a handbasket. Who would have predicted the happy-go-lucky 1980s or the SUV gas-guzzlers of today? I knew people who had windmills in their backyards for when the power ran out. This is a different world. We've seen remarkable social and political changes since then as well as environmental conservation.

Is the VE a viable concept now? Are they predicting world-wide disease? Terrorism? Natural disasters? Countries rife with poverty? We've got all that and more now. And we keep on keeping on. It's a puzzle.
