Clue #139 - RachelBlake.com, StopHanso.RachelBlake.com, & WhereisAlvar.com Updates

There is a new post on RachelBlake.com. Converting the binary to text gives hex, which then converts to what appears to be a reply to Rachel from Malik saying, "R -- I respect your caution. Suppose it's warranted, after all you've come through. I can't remember it exactly, but I think when we were in the stairwell in Paris, you muted the mic as I said "Because he wanted me to help you, and I can't question a man who would launch the Mental Health Appeal... to save a loved one." Say what you will about him now, his heart was once in the right place."

There is also a new post on stophanso.rachelblake.com. The octal decodes to "IiY'nCmN" which can be rearranged to read "I'm in NYC."

Rachel has posted another encrypted message at whereisalvar.com. See the picture posted by user "rachel@whereisalvar.com". Because of all the excellent decoding/encoding work in the comments, the message has been translated to say, "You lived in 3 different apartments. Be waiting outside your second at 7:45 PM. I'm sending a car. Hope you remember the brand of iron you hit me with, because that's the code."

Thanks to makomk, Vashti87, Donn, Kenneth, Main, Mark, and Bassclef42 for emailing us this information.

Good morning, all -

I just wanted to post this from the last thread - did anyone else see this last night? Was it new, or had it been seen before?

"ABC showed a preview of the new season tonight. I just watched the drama preview at 9:30 Eastern time. At the end, just before 10, there was a segment on Lost.

***spoiler***

They showed a clip from season 3 with Sawyer in a cage. He pushes a button marked with a knife and fork and gets a warning message. A kid in a different cage (sounded like Sawyer called him Kyle) warns him not to do that, but he pushes it again and is blasted back.

They also played the same spot that I've seen on Youtube, although the earlier spots say "65 days ago. they fell from the sky" and the one tonight said "67 days ago.""

I watched all the spots that Dixee posted yesterday, and hadn't seen the scene with Sawyer before. I'm also curious as to why they changed the number of days.

p&n -

That's kind of what I figured about the dates as well. I can't imagine it has any other meaning.

***spoiler***

In the scene with Sawyer, he is in a cage in the jungle. He sees the knife and fork button, and underneath it is some kind of chute. He looks around the cell and sees a big red pedal, which he steps on; nothing happens. He then sees a red lever, which he pushes; again, nothing happens. He then pushes the knife and fork button and a voice says "warning." Somewhere in the middle of this, there's a quick shot of the kid, who's in another cell and is wearing a t-shirt and jeans or khakis. He looks maybe 17 or 18. I assumed he was one of the kidnapped tailies. Sawyer pushes the button again and gets the same "warning." The kid says "I wouldn't do that," or something to that affect. Sawyer answers "when I want your advice, (Kyle?), I'll ask for it." He pushes the button again and is blown back across the cell. The scene ends with Sawyer saying "son of a b----."

Hopefully, someone puts it up on youtube. I can't be the only one who saw it!

dark angel - could be a polar bear, or another type of animal. That pedal on the floor was pretty big, so it could have easily been for a large animal like that. However, when I saw the knife and fork button, with the chute underneath, I immediately assumed (as did Sawyer, I'm sure) that it was for food. I don't know if an animal would associate utensils with food. Curious.

Morning all. I have to agree that it seemed like a cage you'd see in a zoo, but I'm not entirely sure that animals would get the knife and fork. Why not just have a red button?

Also, thank goodness for this site, otherwise I'd be completely "lost" on all this binary business.

leelee - I'm really interested in that as well, although it's actually from the season 2 finale, I believe. I also find it interesting that the promo says something about finding out that we don't really know what we think we know. My guess is The Others will turn out to not be so bad afterall - in a sense, they are the "good" guys.

Dark Angel - I like that theory about them having to work together - kind of fits into the whole Dharma idea.

Morning, everyone!

Why does Malek need to know RB is in NY to meet her in Norway?

****Spoiler***
Assuming the cage was part of the Dharma Initiative and assuming that DI started out honest like has been suggested most recently by Malek, then I think that 1) the cage was meant for an animal, 2)the buttons don't do anything because they are no longer activated and the original experiment is no longer active, 3) the cage has been rewired to serve the purposes of the Others, and 4) this is another example of how the Hanso Foundation and DI, while starting out on the right foot, has gone totally wrong.

About the time difference, it could be explained by a 2 day gap between the end of season 2 and the start of season 3, meaning we left the kiddos on the pier and the next time we see them it is two days later.

Dark Angel: Yeah, the work together theory is good too.

Also about the good guys, I'm reminded about a show somewhere where there was an island with soliders on it fighting WWII because they had lost all communication with the outside world. Those soldiers would have said they were the "good guys" too, but they were acting on outdated information and fighting an irrelevant cause.

I think something similar may be happening here. The Others started out as the good guys, scientists of the Dharma Initiative. In the mean time, their actions have changed as they've been left to fend for themselves. They could be "bad guys" in their actions but in their minds still consider themselves to be good guys because they started out that way.

about the cage in the season preview -

Those are not bear size paddles.

they are Orangatang and Gorilla sized paddles. And Gorillas and sometimes orangatangs can learn meaning of symbols (like the knife and fork) although I don't know why they would use utensils for apes.

The fact that there are utensils on the button and a verbal warning (can't hear at work but from prevous posts here seems to be a verbal warning) It would seem that it was made specifically for humans.

Would not be at all surprised if was always intended for humans but made very much like an animal cage to dehumanize the prisoners.

Is this where Joop was trained?

I think that even if they don't need the fork & knife symbol for the animals in the cage, it might be there to remind the the trainer -- as in, "what was that button for...?"

That's what makes the most sense to me. IMHO the utensils and voice warning could be modifications made by the others for human experiements. But I believe that the DI started out clean and honest and has changed, so we're not seeing the cages in their original configuration. We can't neccessarily take the way the cages are now for the way they have always been since the start of the DI. Same with the Others.

The symbols on the button could be for the researchers, or for example to make it clear in a video observing the bears of what the button was for. Imagine film that was going out to researchers who didn't sahre a common language. It would be clear what the button was for even if you didn't understand the dialogue, or if there was no dialogue.

I think these cages weere originally used for the poor polar bears but are now being used purely as safe place to put a very angry (and therefore potentially dangerous) Sawyer. I wonder if the other guy - Carl(?) is one of the Talies

leelee - I agree that figuring out how the Others define "good" is crucial to the story of the show.

A psycopath may have a definition of good that is contrary to what is known as good in civil society.

And many many atrocities, in fact just about all atrocities committed by us have been done in the name of what is good.

The Nazis exterminated the Jews for the good of the ariane race.

The Inquisition was done for the good of those they killed and tortured.

The Crusades were done to exterminate and/or convert the muslims for their own good and the good of christianity

The institution of slavery in thte United STates was done for the good of the blacks they enslaved because they were too stupid to take care of themselves.

See how as humans we have a way of rationalizing the horrible things we do to one another? We rationalize and say things we do are for the good of those we do the things to, when really it is purely selfish reasons.

I think the dharma initiative failed because while it tried to figure out how to improve the human in race and condition, it ended up just boiling the people down to their most elemental and brutal origins.

Good morning...sneaking out of a meeting to check TLEC, man, I need an intervention.

Here's a quick thought/question:

When Malik was in the stairwell with Rachel, he said something to the effect of "I heard your mother died. Is she the one who told you?"

If Rachel's mom was the one that was crazy, I'm not sure she would be sharing details on Alvar and the Mental Health Initiative...at least not with any credibility.

Now the theory I like is that RACHEL is crazy and her mom is the one who told her she was nuts before she died. Alvar and Mom put together the MHI to help Rachel.

I know, I know, it's way out there, but seriously, doesn't that help explain those ridiculous candy bars? ;>)

Re the promo scene of Sawyer last night: Definitely a animal cage. Probably a lot of experimenting done there to condition the animals to hit that button for food, but only at certain times.

sean: spaces won't matter.

so far, the last two lines donw in binary to hex to ascii are:

which is also crap. it is definitely binary to hex and probably to ascii, but then what, i though maybe rot-something, but that's screwed because of the number and the symbols

Noble; nice explanation of how "good" can sometimes be relative in definition. I think that has not been taken into consideration in the posts for the most part.

Actually though, the Crusades were more of a reaction to a few hundred years of Muslim/Turk aggression across the Holy Land, Asia Minor, Europe, etc.

As for the cage, I'm going with the ape-cage theory. Dr. Penny (forget her last name) has done amazing things with gorillas (e.g. Koko) in the way of teaching them sign language, symbols, communication, etc. (www.koko.com) Michael the male gorilla even painted pictures that looked very much like his dog! The fork/knife button could stand for "food" (once the apes learn the symbols), but in order to keep the apes from pushing the food button too much, when the button says "warning", maybe they are to learn that they are not to push it a second time. As long as the button doesn't say it, they can push for food as much as they like.

Just my $.02 :-) Sorry if this has already been posted by the time I got it printed out.

So the wording used in Malekl's message was interesting as well. He said, "...to SAVE a loved one." I wonder if Rachel's mother (if it is indeed her that he is talking about) committed suicide.

The "Rachel is crazy theory" is interesting but unlikely I think. It could be like Ange suggested, a tragic romance between Alvar and Rachel's mother where Rachel's mother commits suicide because she can't take how the Dharma Initiative is changing Alvar or because Alvar disappears.

It looks to me like it is definitely bin to ASCII, then the ASCII is actually hex code that needs to be converted again to get the real ASCII values..

We need that missing set to convert to the proper hex sequence in order to be able translate it fully.

agreed peaceannamaste. i don't think this is a real-world event. they don't expect anyone to go to an apartment building and yell out the password.

Anybody have a link to the first, "Copenhagen 1," video of Rachel. Stophanso's archives don't seem to go back that far. It occurred to me that maybe the phone call Rachel received in the middle of the first video was about her mother dying. Did the video just keep rolling or did it break after she said, "Hello?" If it broke then we don't know what happened in the interim. Her reaction wasn't extreme but then again, her mother could have been sick and dying was not a surprise to her.

Then Rachel's grief in Italy would have been fresh and Malek's comment about her mother passing would have been recent news.

Anyway, I'd like to check the video again. Anybody know if it's on YouTube?

James, that turned out to be a glyph code. Not sure which clue it was, but definetly old.

So I found the video, Rachel's first post. It definitely seems possible the phone call was news about her mother.

Lostpedia says it appears the phone was dead, but I've always thought that she received bad news.

Maybe it's a trivial piece of information, but the idea that Rachel's mom died while she was in Copenhagen and couldn't go to her make the story more interesting to me. It also makes Rachel's grief and Malek's comment more pertinent. I wonder if it will come into play again later?

Maybe MHA really stands for Mittlewerk Helps Alvar...

gfd613-Good point about the MHA being created my TWM rather than Alvar. I never even thought of that. If that were so, then it would open up many more lines of thinking and maybe get us away from the Alvar+Rachel's mother lines. I will check Lostpedia and see if they have anything about the MHA.

Lostpedia had this to say about the MHA- From Gene Therapies, to radical pharmaceutical treatments and the cutting edge in both surgery and psychotherapy, the Hanso Foundation's Mental Health Appeal is moving forward to fulfill Alvar Hanso's ambitious mandate: the complete eradication of all mental illness by the end of the century.

That statement coupled with some of the memos relating to the Vik Institute and Dr. Armand Zander make me believe that the "he" referenced in the latest message could indeed be TWM who has created the MHA (based on Alvar's theories and ideas) rather than Alvar.
(Good thinking gfd613).

jess4ua: Yes, that's what I'm currently thinking. It was just a theory when I started, but now I'm nearly convinced.
