Clue #141 - Retrievers of Truth Update?

The Retrievers of Truth have a new thread on their message board (password "Steinbeck"). It is dated September 13th but apparently just appeared today. Please correct us if we're wrong. Thanks to makomk for the email. While it's completely unrelated to The Lost Experience, we wanted to wish everyone a very happy "Talk Like a Pirate Day" on this wonderful September 19th, 2006. :)

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me.

Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho.

arrr, reposting from last

Look what just washed ashore...a message in a dharma mayo jar! Wait, let me open it...

*unscrews jar lid, removes used apollo bar wrapper*

Hey, it's a note from Rachel!

"What a weekend I had! Suffice to say there were narrow escapes, sharks with lasers on their heads, evil megalomaniacs, bad hair, genetically altered jungle animals and you won't believe what else! I'd love to tell you all about it, but first I need you to do something for me.

Grab a sprite, head over to your Jeep dealer, persuade the sales manager to strip to his skivvies, sing a duet with him about pirates, juggle a dozen Apollo bars, tattoo RB4EVR on your right rump, sponsor a sri lankan child's vaccinations via Sally Struthers website, create a 2 story replica of a nanite out of Joop droppings and oh yeah, capture the whole thing on your Verizon phone.

Trust me, it's important. I'll explain later.

then go to www.wheredidthearggo.com and post your video.

once 42,815 post their complete videos, i'll send out another mayonaise jar. Thanks!"

Wow, she sure gets a lot of info on one little wrapper. Oddly enough, her handwriting is in ALL CAPS.

*hurries off to jeep dealer*

Info on Rockwell (Musician) from Wikipedia:

Rockwell was the stage name of Kenneth William Gordy (born Kennedy William Gordy on March 15, 1964), who was an African-American R&B performer for the Motown label. He was born in Detroit, Michigan.

Rockwell is the son of Motown founder and CEO Berry Gordy. To avoid charges of nepotism, Rockwell secured his record deal without his father's knowledge.

In 1984, Rockwell released his only hit single, "Somebody's Watching Me", featuring childhood friends Michael and Jermaine Jackson on guest vocals (notably in the chorus lyrics). "Somebody's Watching Me" was a Top Ten pop hit in the US and a #1 R&B hit. Follow-up singles underperformed, however, and Rockwell soon ended his musical career with Motown.

A remix of "Somebody's Watching Me", by the dance act Beatfreakz, was released in the UK on 1 March 2006, peaking at No. 3. A cover version of the song was also released by the band Warmen.

Hanso people were in the ROT offices:

The way things stand now with HANSO folks lurking around our offices, how can you be sure you are not developing programs for the talking monkey people?

Mittelwerk just walked by my desk.

So, someone from Hanso might recognize her, but they wouldn't know her as her ROT alias. Unless BroadBankBeatnik has sold them down the river...

Ironman worked in IT for Hanso, so it's reasonable to say he was one of those people touring the office and might have recognized her, but she would have know him from the RB videos.

Ok, since maybe we're in the mood to take things too far....because of the latest ROT update (and because I'm bored), I went to broadband stories/Urballoon and in the New York Screenings there was an entry that said Oviedo and at the bottom of the picture it said Helios. So....I googled Helios (sometimes spelled Helius) and came up with some greek mythology that ties in names like Apollo, Persephone, Hyperion, Oceanus, and even the Colussus of Rhodes.

I think the ROT post was Foreshadowing...establishing a little tension for those of us with candy bars and pictures on the web. There's gonna be a showdown between the powers of good and evil.

So far, Rachel's been doing all the talking. I think their analogy about a wounded animal fighting back means that TWM is going to strike back at Rachel and all of us.

Or a dried up old bone could work too.

The only problem I have with that theory, is the date of the ROT post is 9/13, which was BEFORE WIA.COM went to 100%. I think it WAS a hint to somthing that has ALREADY happened.

Some intern just forgot to put it up. I guess better late than never -- at least we got SOMETHING today....

Interesting, Codysmom, thanks.

I think that the ARG is the actual virus that has infected us mentally. Now we look for hidden meanings in everything we see, google where it comes from, decipher what it means, and basically rip it to shreds until we know everything there is to know about the topic.

This game was definitely meant for enquiring minds! :-)

SPOILER

Just to bumm you out some more :)

The season 2 DVD set revealed that the Swan bunker beeping sound was actually sampled originally from a store bar code scanner. You know, the ones where the clerk passes an item across, and when the scanner picks up the item info, it "beeps"? Well, thats the sound we hear on Lost when the count down timer in the Swan bunker reaches 4 minutes.

I find it ironic , with the comercial tie ins of the ARG; Verizon, Jeep, Sprite, etc, that a key sound we have been listening to for a whole season 2 of Lost is the sound you hear when you part with your money.

Sorry for the downer.......I was pizzed, untill I saw the humor, then I laughed till I peed me pants (wink)

Yes I've seen this shot before - They have clearly shot each actor seperately and then photshopped them (badly together)

The lighting for Fenrey and Desmond is incosistent with the background and different from those used on the others.

Furthermore Kate and Hurley seem to have mutant feet. Although I suspect that it is part of her sandles it appears that kate has toes growing from the side of her feet and I don't know what an earth is going on with Hurley's feet.

I have the following conclusions:

1. They need to retrain the art dept.

2. Desmond and Fenry were late additions to the picture.

Rachel's messages, especially on WIA, are getting to be very funny to me if you think of it in terms of actually communication (which it's not). What I mean is that the way she words things, it sounds like she(TPTB)is totally out of touch with the reality of her followers/players (us) in the game, but she just keeps on her merry way.

It's sort of like (w/ her notes paraphrased):

Us: "Rachel there are still too many questions left open in the Sri Lanka video."

RB: "Great work guys, now you know everything you need to know to shut them down!"

Us: But RB, we need to hear from you."

RB: "Thanks for keeping up with me and listening to me!"

Us:"RB, you are boring us to death, do something."

RB: "You guys are awesome for being so active in the fight and following my every step, HOORAH!"

Us: "zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz"

RB: "Your dedication to my quest is awesome guys!"

Us: ** Crickets chirping because there is no longer anyone watching/playing the game**

RB: "Way to go guys. You've done it. You've been with me till the very end. Now you get your reward of a podcast sometime in the distant future!"

Sheesh. I assume that TPTB have a script that was already written up for the game. But being a total noob to ARGs, are ARG plans/designs totally static once they start or can they ever change, at any point into the game, if necessity dictates a different track or change is needed? I.E., could TPTB (if they read/hear our complaints/suggestions) make Rachel's emails/messages more connected to what is actually happening with the players (and maybe possibly actually answer our questions!)or must they stick to what they planned even if it turns out to be somewhat less than effective?

Well, if ANYONE understood what I just said, congrats. :-) I realize that it's a bit muddled the way I asked it. THX

The one that puzzles me is the "Book of the Year - 1976". It can't be his High Scool Year book - that would make him too old, about 48. I guess it could be the year he was born, which would make him 28 in 2004, which seems too young.

I think you are correct, right from the start we have seen scenes of duality - black and white together with themes of redemption. Hurley, Michael and Walt, Jin and Sun.

It seems to suggest that whilst there is a distinction between good and bad, we have free will and we can redeem ourselves. It is our choice what actions we take.

I think that the books were probably just taken from a props store and in the actual footage they will not be in focus long enough for them to be seen. The props person just got what Medical books they had and filled the rest with anything that looked right.

Be good to find a link though - TPTB have said the others live somewhere we will never expect. maybe the Harry Potter book is a clue. Hogwarts is actually on the Island - hence no Muggle can ever find it. The others are actually the staff of Hogwarts and the Smoke Monster is Peeves!

Kylelane, I disagree that all the Losties can be pegged as bad people (even the Others think that some are good). Hurley is a nice guy; Claire hasn't ever hurt anyone, that we know of; Rose is a great person (although kinda crabby to her hubby at times in that one ep); Locke was just very confused in the beginning, and gosh, he gave away a kidney!

But I agree with everything else you said. :-)

But Kate, Sawyer, Anna-Lucia, Eko and Michael have all killed people in cold blood. Sayid was a torturer, Charlie used people and stole from them and don't forget Jin was hired muscle.

Regardless of their motivation most people / societies would consider those pretty bad acts.

I agree with you that the Losties are Lost, we know / understand the motivations for their past errors. I think though they they have been bad in the past, regardless of how badly they have been treated in the past it is their decision whether they kill someone or not.

Most of our Losties have commited criminal acts and they have now been given a chance to redeem themselves. It is down to them whether to choose the light or dark.

Personally I am not a great believer in the idea of good and evil as absaloute concepts but I think in the show we are shown these characters who have either majorly screwed up or in the case of Jack, Claire, Hurley and Locke think that they have screwed up and have a massive load of guilt.

They now all have a chance to redeem themselves and prove they are good. The others of course can only judge them by what they know of the past and by their actions (killing others!)

Guys, this game cant't end with Dj Dan's podcast! There are too many loose ties right now: What's Mittelwerk really up to? Why did he need to replace all his blood? What has he been doing in the last two months? Where's Alvar? Who's Rachel? What happened to her mother? Is Joop really important or just a bloody Hanso mascot? What happened to Magnus Hanso? What's up with all that "missing organs" stuff? What's the purpose of the hieroglyphs? Is Valenzetti really dead? If not, where the hell is he?

Did I miss something?

Morning all: I really don't want to believe that this journey will end with the podcast. There are way too many unanswered question (many of them stated by Lost in the above comment.) They can't possibly wrap up everything in a podcast. Talk about exposition! LOL Then again, maybe TPTB went overbudget and THEIR powers that be said "enough is enough"! LOL

lost,
I think people are beginning to realize that, much like the show, we are going to be left with more questions than answers. This isn't necessarily a bad thing because they are all questions that we did not even know to be asking before TLE started. We now have a long list of things to be looking for when we watch the show and go about our mystery solving that people not involved in TLE have no clue about. The knowledge we have (or at least know to be looking for) we play heavily into the development of the mythology of the island.

I would not be surpised in TLE ended abruptly with lots of loose ends.

I also think much of the "I would not mind if it ended with DJ Dan" chatter is reflective of a general apathy related to the game. People are becoming exhausted by the participatory nature of the game. Lots of investment with less than hoped for returns...basically, we're ready to sit on the couch and watch LOST frame by frame. :)

thanks admin. i like your vision of the end of the game. i can't help but think that we're gearing up for a big battle between TWM and Rachel. i truly believe that someone as ruthless as Ponytail, willing to slaughter so many people in the name of his cause, would never just walk away from it because a spunky little Nancy Drew put out a video.

i'm looking forward to some "spirited debate"!

9/20/2006 10:23:00 AM
Blogger Chris Procter said...

The only problem I have with the link into season 3 is that TLE was also aimed at UK and Australian fans who won't be going straight into Season 3 and (officially at least) won't see it for a while. TPTB also said that you did not have to be familiar with Lost to play the game. to me that would suggest some conclusion that did not tie in directly with lost.

There is of course the possiblity that TLE will not end but will restart after the first 6 episodes of Season 3

9/20/2006 10:24:00 AM
Blogger Chris Procter said...

I think that to a certain extent TLE is a big experiment. If sucessful it is a good way to advertise and keep a program afloat in a hiatus. The boundries between TV and the net are blurring more and more.

It is like the email that appeared in Doom 3. You had to go online to find a website to a code to then access some kit in game. Supposedly this is a test to see if players would visit a sponsors site in order to progress the game.

I would say TLE has been a successful trial and I imagine they will do more. It's a long process working out pace, difficulty etc.

Dark Angel, it's hard to beleive, but I think it was Tapdawg that had a press release saying that the general audience will be filled in about all this knowledge we gained playing this game, through the show Lost. When during the season? I'm not sure...Makes ya think that the only cool thing about this game and all the info we learned is that we found out about it first...But then when they start showing all this stuff in the S3 episodes, it will be kinda dry since we already know the stuff they are showing. Admin- I'm always encouraged by your unswerving optimism toward this game. I hope you're right about how this will end.
Regarding "good" and "bad" there is definitely the good vs. evil/black vs. white themes in the show, and the Losties are truly lost and trying to redeem themselves. But I still think that when the Others use the terms "good" and "bad" that they are using some qualification other than moral and/or ethical behavior to label the Losties. JMO

Looking at that photo of the books, I'm struck by how many are detective/adventure novels. I wouldn't have pegged Jack for the type. As far as the Book of the Year 1976 goes, I searched on Amazon, and the first title that came up was a Britannica Book, so it could just be an annual reference - although why he would keep one from 30 years ago is beyond me. Maybe it was a good year for research?

Also interesting, I searched for the book Fire in the Mind, which appears on the top shelf, and the full title is Fire in the Mind: Science, Faith and the Search for Order. I doubt that's by chance! Actually, I doubt any of these titles are by chance - we should know by know that when things like this appear in Lost, it's for a reason. Some of the book titles that have been used even appear in the Hatch jigsaw puzzle.

We've theorized that these people were possibly Dharma researchers who were left there or who rebelled, etc. But if they were the original Dharma scientists, then they would all be Henry's and Mr. Friendly's age. There were several people who looked to be 20-something or 30-something. Has anyone else noticed this? And if so, any idea as to who these younger people might be? Perhaps study subjects or scientists that came to the island later than the originals? If there are some 20-somethings that came to the island to work on the Dharma initiative, then perhaps the Dharma Initiative did not fail until recently? I don't know, theorizing is not my strongest suit- anyone got any interesting ideas?

kylelane, dark angel, etc,

I'm loving the "good/bad" discussion you've got going on. I think it is definitely a key piece of the show's drama. I'm iffy on exactly how morality influences Valenzetti. It is an interesting consideration since "goodness" seems to be an important value to the Others. I personally think this is one of the most compelling parts of LOST. I believe in good and evil and I also believe that we all possess the capacity for and history of both good and evil in our individual lives. That's why I think the losties are "lost" in their lives...They need to believe that they are good but they can't shake the fact that evil significantly marks them in different ways. That is what hits close to home with me. I'm neither a good person or a bad person...I am both at once. How do you shake that evil? And if you can't shake it, how do you deal with it?

Simple plug...these are the questions we're asking in the discussions that have begun at storiesofthelost.com. It's undergone some significant changes to make it more "user friendly". If you haven't visited in awhile, check it out. My vision is that TLC will be a great playground for post-episode discussions (Did you notice? What did _____ mean? etc.) and that Stories of the Lost will be a great place for us to really do character analysis after each flashback and have more philosophical discussions about themes etc.

Speaking of vision...a podcast is in the works :) Finally.

****S2 spoiler****

I think that there are several explanations for the younger folks among the Others:

1) They are the missing tailies, who are being forced to stay, or have chosen to stay

2) They are later research subjects

3) They are other castaways (like Alex)

4) They are the children of the original Dharmas - if they've been trapped on the island since the 80s, there's bound to be some island babies popping up :)

I think it's very interesting that Jack has a Bible, and a well-worn copy at that. He also has at least two books on astrology and what looks like a book called The Spirit of Christmas. Plus, the Stephen King book Hearts in Atlantis. Very interesting/diverse tastes. :)

Hi All. Okay, gonna keep this brief:

1) I believe the WTK Aim account is genuine, because I don't think even TPTB would be so dumb as to create an AIM chat log for accounts they don't own. I mean we've all seen the trouble caused by people pretending to be in game personalities in some form or another, they have to have realised this and while maybe they aren't expected to cover all in-game names in all forms of acount (be it IM, blogger or whater) they should at least be able to handle the exact AIM account for which they have created a fake log.

2) Ownershep was also on today. Ange told me she logged on and then logged right off almost right away the other day. So to be sneaky I set up an auto-message to that account when it logged on. Which meant when I got back from work the window was open. The account has online for about a minute and the user didn't reply to my message. The time on that was 13:51 UK time.

3) Pressuming this is genuine. It's just another pointless bit of nothing that simply tells us something big is coming. Hopefully the something big won't this time be a message to tell us something even bigger is coming. Still I'm glad they haven't forgotten about the WTK angle. Maybe we will get something before the arg pressumably concludes live on DJ Dan (I'd like to hope there was going to be a killer Act 5 launched on DJ Dan but I fear this is it).

END OF LINE

Interesting Fenris! I think you may have given us additional validation that these guys are legit.

I like the fact that they're popping up and fading away, giving us a sense of activity, but teasing us with the potential. Kinda like seeing the Others through the trees...we know something is going on, but not what.

I hope we get a bombshell on Friday that puts us into a tailspin...like Mittlewerk denouncing Rachel, so we won't know who to trust come Sunday.

Hey, fysb! Right, we've been getting hints at things to come. Hopefully, THF is going to start fighting back and launch another publicity campaign. I'm dreading, though, that this "tease" might just be a ploy to keep us involved and interested. Hope not for our sanity! LOL

Greetings Maven! I'm going to try and keep my glass is half full attitude for a few more days and see what happens. Mittlewerk HAS to respond, doesn't he? He knows Rachel has a video of him talking about killing Sri Lankans, his goons chased her and possibly killed DeZylva. Not sure if ol'Ponytail is a comic fan, but Rachel stood up in front of a whole boatload of people (and in an interview with EW) and sent them to hansoexposed.

So we have to assume that HE knows that WE know what he is up to.

Soooo....he has to discredit Rachel (killing her won't help since the video is already out).

Where do we all get the idea that the game is going to be over after DJDAN? I'm convinced the game will a least go until the end of October. I think the date on the Apollo bars is a clue to when this game is over.

Also there is an easy answer as to why it's been so quiet around here? Act three was the glyph hunt, everyday we were searching the internet for glyphs. But Act four is the Appollo Bar distribution. Act four is still going on and will continue til the end of the weel. There are still hundreds of players out collecting their appollo bars. That's what this phase of the game is all about.

DJ Dan has to be the beginning of ACT 5. Which I'm convinced will be a full month long wrap-up.

I don't think we should fret yet or assume that just because the show is preimering in the US that the game will be over. Hopefully we'll have four weeks of Hanso commercials, and other goodies that can only begin to commence when Lost premiere's with a clip show on September 27th (new epidsodes on the 4th.) DJ DAN's new podcast is only the beginning!!

WORD!!!!!

Passafist,

I agree with most of what you said. I originally thought the game would end on October 4th when season 3 starts here in the US. However, there seems to be too much to wrap up in only a week and a half -- let alone in a two hour broadcast.

If the game was ending that quick, there would be no way TPTB would be able to take this week off and do essentialy nothing.

Today is the last Apollo giveaway, so hopefully the Apollo Candy phase is over, and the interns will be free to create some new content for us.

Howdy all,

Been on the road doing a project for the last week. Looks like I didn't miss much.

I would have agree to that there is no way the game will be wrapped up by the S3 start date.

The turn the game has taken since the frags were found has been incredibly lame and not well thought out. I'm not sure what to expect at this point, but I have to say it isn't much after the huge fall off. Not sure what TBTP were thinking but a two week layoff while waiting for a podcast is quite boring.

Anyway, good to see you all. Going back to lurking for a while so I can get some work done.

Hello everyone, I'm finally back. the surgery was a piece of cake. I'm pretty bruised up but none the worse for wear. Thanks for all your good wishes the other day; it meant a lot to me.

I have to point out, when has DJ Dan's podcast ever been truly meaningful? we have no reason to believe that Rachel will get a word in edgewise. DJ Dan's rumblings have never given us any truly useful information; I don't expect this weekend's to be any different despite what RB has said.

I was hoping for more clues or facts to tie up the loose ends and I don't see how TPTB will get this all covered by the opening of S3. So I think the game will have to go into next month and maybe beyond. It would be great to see some of the ideas and concepts we've developed on this blog in some of the S3 episodes.

»The Lost Experience Coming to a Close
Source: ABC September 20, 2006

The multiplatform interactive phenomenon "The Lost Experience" will come to a climactic close on September 24 (8:00 p.m., PT, 5:00 p.m., ET), with a live worldwide radio internet broadcast hosted by the renegade DJ Dan. The broadcast will also feature a special in-studio guest and announce a link for the final video clue revealing the truth behind the actions of the Hanso Foundation. DJ Dans previous broadcast gave clues leading to the Sri Lanka video, which unveiled the meaning behind the numbers 4 8 15 16 23 42. To listen to the broadcast, go to ABC.com.

"The Lost Experience" is a revolutionary interactive marketing endeavor based on the international hit television series, "Lost," designed to further enhance viewers relationship with the program. "The Lost Experience" incorporates over twenty broadcasters from five continents, making it the largest global interactive challenge based on a television series. This experience follows a parallel storyline not featured in the television broadcast, and the challenge is specifically designed in a manner that is not dependent on information specific to either Season One or Season Two, allowing for the participation of those who have not yet seen either season of Lost. "The Lost Experience" provides insight to unlock some of the islands secrets for those savvy enough to collect the clues, make the connections and find the answers.

The third season of "Lost" starts on October 4 at 9/8c. «

Yeah, that was me being brief. :) Perhaps only compared to my usual posts though. Lol.

Okay, looking for confirmation on the press release (anyone got/found a link) but if true I just want to say: I *so* Called that. Lol.

There is no Act 5. Well either that or the scattering of predictable text messages was Act 5. Really they have outdone themselves in trying to find something worse then Act 4. Really I am impressed.

It's quite an anti-climax really. They've given me just (barely) enough intrege to feel a need for more, but to be constantly disapointed with what they have delivered. I want some cool new puzzle or theories, but this isn't going to deliver it. I also want more of the Hanso Foundation, but not like this.

Still, DJ Dan will be fun. Although I will be wrecked for work the next day. I said all along it was my favorite part of the Arg so I'm not so disapointed they are ended with a podcast. I'm just disapointed there isn't the mythical "really good" act before the podcast.

9/20/2006 04:12:00 PM
Blogger Scoutpost said...

You know that is so friggin' irritating...considering that they changed the time around so much. I mean if DJDan is the end of this whole thing we've been working on all summer- first it's on a major Jewish holiday- lame, then they schedule it for Friday morning rush hour- lame, now it's at a time when all of Europe will be asleep- lame. You'd think they'd care enough to make it at a time when everyone could experience the ending in real time...I mean I know that's hard, but the 8am PST was probably the best for everyone, why didn't they just figure some way of postponing it until the next Saturday? I guess they really don't have anything else for us until then, and waiting 2 weeks with nothing inbetween would have been unthinkable?! Still, how unfair that is for all you in the UK, AUS, NZ and elsewhere outside the US.

Lost - Ta, and you could be right about the episode gap. They may want to fill it in with more details, especially if the first episode arc is to focus on the Others and there links to Dharma/Hanso. That would give them a chance to run some closure that covers the additional info gained from those episodes before moving onto the rest of the season and the probably different direction (though they've said they aren't going to just drop the Dharma stuff, but they won't focus on it so much this season).

It makes sense. But since when have TPTB done things logically. lol.

Still we can hope. That unanswered questions thread that Ange looks after on the message board looks set to stay rather bloated post-podcast. They can't possibly answer *all* of that.
