Clue #145 - TheHansoFoundation.org Update

There has been an update to thehansofoundation.org. Alvar Hanso has written a letter about the restoration of the Foundation. But that's not all...click the word "humanity" at the end of the third paragraph for a creepy message from Mittlewerk.

Thanks to makomk, jetamo, DJP3DRO, and superdifey for emailing us about this update.

Reminds me of the end of Flash Gordon (the 1980 movie).

Mmn The Lost experience - ie the first battle is over but the war is just beginning.

Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few. (Prolonged cheers.)

All hearts go out to the TLErs, whose brilliant actions we see with our own eyes day after day but we must never forget that all the time, hour after hour, month after month, our TLECers travel far into the web, find their targets in the darkness by the highest geeky skill, aim their mice, often under the heaviest confusion, often at serious loss, with deliberate, careful precision, and inflict shattering blows upon the whole of the technical and war-making structure of Hanso power. (Cheers.)

Woohoo! Epilogue! So exciting! So now we can infer that Alvar is no longer being held captive and will be in charge of the new Hanso Foundation. I bet he'll hire Rachel to work along side him and they'll be doing the "making up for lost time as father and daughter" thing now. Mittlework will be underground doing his nefarious pony-tailed Dr. Evil thing. The question is was he more a threat when he was part of a semi-public organization or now that he's underground?

I totally didn't see Alvar being freed and restarting the Hanso Foundation back on its noble purposes with Rachel at his side. Maybe they'll even let Joop have a quiet retirement? Anyway, bumps aside, I'm very happy with this ending.

I'm interested in which side in this fight Peter Thompson is goin to fall. He obviously is attracted to the Alvar side of things in terms of helping humanity, and has questions about TWM's morality. On the other hand, he has a pesonal debt to Mittelwerk for curing his cancer.

I'm a little sad that season three is suppose to have less mythology. I would have liked to see more of a connection with TLE or "Reality" as DJ Dan calls it (which I thought sucked by the way). It seems as if they want to keep the two almost totally seperate, which annoys me.

But seriously, could the DJ Dan podcast have given us any less info or entertainment? Rachel finally had nothing to hide and still didn't give us anything. Thought that was dumb.

The writers for The Lost Experience, just like Lost, have to remember that it's character that really drives the story and keeps people coming back.

And the PT character is a really interesting one, given his sordid past, moral questioning, and vocal similarities to DJ Dan!

9/26/2006 09:03:00 AM

ox: Well, I have a feeling that even if Alvar is willing to go to bat for PT, he is still going to have a hard time winning Rachel over to his side, after she spent all summer digging up the dirt on him that she shared with us.

Totally vering off topic but Peter Thompson got me thinking about DJ Dan and DJ Dan got me thinking about about Donuts and Donuts made me think Homer Simpsons and I thought Isn't about time we had a Lost Simpsons episode.

RE: last night's thread;

Yes, Matt, we get it. I wanted to know what YOU thought TWM's religion was, I should have phrased my question better. Having worked in the field of science for 30 years, with all kinds of scientific disciplines, I know the distinct differences between science and faith, etc. (Just ask Scully:-) But in the science world, TWM's voracity would still not be called a religion, it would be more to the affect of philosophical or theoretical obsession. Just because a scientist/theorist lets his scientific "power" go to his head (and almost become his own god--Lord knows, I worked with enough of those!) his/her obsessive philosophy doesn't turn into the literal definition of a religion. Heh, shades of L.Ron Hubbubb.

Dark Angel, intersting end-of-the-world thoughts. Although, TWM and AH kept saying, "The world as we know it", and everytime I hear that I think, well, how do we know that a change to the world from "as we know it" to something else, would not be a good thing? Just wondering. Could go either way.

Also DA, even though we say "Mom" in the US, I like the way you all say "Mum". I thought that it was especially heartbreaking the way "Mum" was written on the envelope from Princes Harry and Wills that was on the little bouquet on top of Diana's coffin. :-(

I agree, the danger is in an individuals blindness to new ideas whether in religion or science or anything else for that matter.

If something is really valid whether as a religious belief or a scientific theory then it should be able to stand up to constant testing.

So is Alvar going to go forward with the spider protocol?

I was kinda thinking that the romance angle would have to be scrapped. However, you could have Jack be Principal Skinner, Mrs Krabappel as Kate, and I can't let go of Snake as Sawyer. There's always marginal characters in the ToH episodes. And Snake's got a history of stealing women.

Lisa would then have to be.... I dunno. She never dies in the ToH, at least not to my recollection.

TBP: Are you saying anything we say might be held against us in an episode of Simpsons?

Noblelawyer: My theory is that the simplest explanations are the most likely. TPTB don't seemed to have thought things through as much as we have. Therefore probably everything related to the SPIDER PROTOCOL was in that packet Rachel got from Darla and Hugh and not much more. Virus, test site, ship to transport and spread infection. The video revealed that the SPIDOR PROTOCOL was the development of the virus to kill exactly 30% of the world's population in order to change one of the factors, one number, influencing the Valezetti end of the world date. Does it make total sense? Maybe not, but I think we're being asked to take this stuff largely at face value.

Twinkle, I like what you said about the Protocal. But I would have felt more closure, if TWM actually said,"We all know what happened, the DI failed. Hense, my Spider Protocal". But, then I could refer back to what you said about TPTB not actually thinking of all the answers to the questions (X-Files shivers again).

Probably makes the most sense to do what DA suggested and just have the Simpson people spouting "Lost-isms" and associating with the Lost characters. Or make the marginal characters in Simpsons equate to Lost characters while keeping the core Simpson characters themselves. Then Selma and her sister could become "Jack and Sawyer"-ish and some new love interest of theirs could be Kate. Or maybe in some other instance, reversing the gender of the characters could work?

Love the Simpson/Lost casting! I vote Mr. Burns/Mittelwork. Great work guys!

Well, the virus seems the most important thing that came out of all the Valenzetti discussions. Changing the population figures seems to be core to changing a factor of the equation. At least Alvar and Rachel will be working together now (with our help), and we can get to Mittelwerk (maybe during the Season 3 break or next summer if he hasn't killed off 30% of the population yet!

capcom: OT - I just went to a workshop this weekend that gave a brief overview of moderism versus postmodernism and it is definitely influencing my interpretation of TLE this week. The desire for final closure, for specific evidence in order to make conclusions, is more modern way of thinking about it. (And that's also what I'm more comfortable with.) The postmodern way of thinking is more comfortable with allowing ambiguity. It seemed obvious to me from the DJ Dan podcasts that we were meant to assume things as true even though there was hard evidence for them. So I've been trying to look at TLE from a more postmodern mindset and it's working better. IMHO some of the disconnects and frustrations with TLE have been caused by this modern/postmodern mindset difference.

You know, once we finish disecting the Simpsons, we can start on a Futurama/Lost ep. The one they did about Star Trek (the Apollo planet ep) was side-splitting.

"OK, the wessel!"

sorry "even though there was not hard evidence" we were supposed to assume some things were true, i.e. that Mittlework's virus was designed to kill 30% of the population of the entire planet even though he was only using it on Sri Lankans at the time.

9/26/2006 11:09:00 AM
Blogger maven said...

I agree with you twinkle: We were given many things over the course of TLE that we just had to accept as true even though we continued to dissect every little detail. I always said that we should "go with the flow" and accept some unbelieveable or unproven things. TPTB wanted the story to go a certain way which sometimes stretched the reality we know to the limit...so we were constantly pushed in that direction. Even something as simple as Rachel=Persephone was a major point of contention all summer, but it was just a simple story point. We just had to accept continuity errors (how can she be here, when she was just there?), scientific impossibilities, human errors, etc. Suspension of belief was vital to this ARG!

Oh yeah, Twinkle! Modernism and postmodernism, delicious stuff! Our pastor refers to that alot in his Monday night "university" class where we discuss current events vs. history. It really explains a lot about the collective mind of society.

maven: i think tptb kind of painted themselves into a corner. they wanted to tell a story, but that story was so interwoven with science and theory that the two were inseperable. then the problem is, science must stand up to exacting inspection. once we gout our magnifying glass on their story, the holes look mighty big.

Hehe, glad I did the clean up myself before checking the comments so I can pat myself on the back.

Well, hmmm, still disapointed with the ending (especially the all to obvious Rachel is Alvars daughter thing and the way Malek just comes to the rescue whenever needed). But I'm starting to like Mittlewerk a bit more as a bad guy. Seems he can hack websites well enough himself. I'm not convinced at how good the new Hanso Foundation is either.

Also still too many loose ends. I want to know if Mittlewerks blood change was because he *is* in his own genetic target group.

Anyway, I don't think this ARG is quite concluded just yet, even if it will be continued only in the form of a sequel. If it does get a sequel I hope they can convince Javi to stay on board.

Oxillini: Half the fun of the summer was poking holes in their story! Very big holes indeed! But, it was still a story they wanted to tell...they just underestimated our search for the truth and what this great community was capable of. They probably just didn't think it through as thoroughly as we did! However, I still say somethings just had to be accepted at face value so that we could rationalize the direction of the story.

LOL Joel, the first thing I thought too was, hey, TWM hacks just like Persephone!

Ox, I agree. For a non-scientist to write/create scientific fiction (not to be confused with scifi and scifantasy) one must be very careful to not go out of the bounds of the realm of verification. But, I decided to myself that Lost is scifi/scifantasy, so I'm trying to not hold TPTB to too much scrutiny concerning things like, how exactly does the VE work, etc. (covers eyes)

Not everyone can be like Arthur C. Clark and write a story that invents satellites and geosyn orbit. So, I cut them some slack, since it looks like *so far* TPTB are *trying* to stay within the realm of scifact within the fiction where possible.

'Morning Fenrisulven. What did you mean that TWM is his own genetic target group? Sorry if I'm dense.

Too true Maven, the poking of holes was one of the best parts of the ARG. :-) No offense of course to TPTB. They had no idea of the intellect that they were up against in their audience. :-) But in all fairness, they probably thought that they were merely writing the ARG as another TV script, more or less, and didn't realize how many people were going looking at the plot and science with such scrutiny, i.e., leading us to connect it to things such as tesseracts, e.g. Although, they do seem to throw out the little tidbits that lead us to those informatioin searches though. But we don't want Lost/ARG to be a Nat'l Geo channel documentary anyway, we want it to be intelligent but fun!

Blogger oxillini said...

maven, i wasn't disagreeing with you re: accepting things at all. that is certainly what tptb wanted us to do at times. i was just pointing out that it seemed very inconsistent. at one point, we're supposed to look at things and try to find patterns and hidden meanings, other times, we're not supposed to look at the details at all. it's a tricky situation they were/are in! i don't envy them one bit!

9/26/2006 11:51:00 AM
Blogger Capcom said...

Agreed Ox, about wanting us to notice patterns/meanings and then not wanting us too. *coughxfilescough* Which ones do you dwell on and which ones not to? Maybe we need a list for that too.... "pay close attetion here" vs. "take note and forget". I hope that Joop is not in the "forget" category in the ARG. I have a feeling that in the series there are a lot of "take note and forget" areas.

capcom said: What did you mean that TWM is his own genetic target group?

I think that is a very reasonable conclusion, Fenris. TVM had to innoculate himself and probably other members of his team who would die if exposed to the engineered virus because they were part of the 30% percent. Although that fudges on TVM's "exactly 30%" speech.

capcom continued: [TPTB] had no idea of the intellect that they were up against in their audience.

I agree. Seems to me that what we have here are postmoderns who care more about story, process, and philisophical questions than conclusions writing a story for a largely modern thinking audience who care more about details and science, with a few puzzles thrown in because "that's what you're supposed to do in an ARG."

Like ox said "tricky situation."

Okay from the previous thread first:

Campcom - Don't worry I'm sticking around and you'll certainly see me in TLC. Although even cheating I will still be at least a day behind the US on the actual episodes. As for Holywoodland - Wow, that one really slipped me by. Looks right up my alley however. I will give you an opinion on the matter as soon as I form one! As for Black Dahlia I'm going to see it this friday. Hopefully the IMDB rating is misleading. As for the track. Lol. Yes it was a bit like performance art. Given most of the backing was recorded in in one take and not edited to smooth it out or take out the duff notes. The bass line is completely unrelated to the rest of the song (and a relic from a previous version I didn't really like as much), but I kept it in there because it kinda worked. Anyway I am going to tweak it now and there will be a more professional version up soonish. Heh, that wasn't even the track I have been working on it was just me deciding a Mittlewerk track would be a lot quicker to do then another DJ Dan one and I would be more likely to get it out before the ARG concludes.

Twinkle - The thing is we don't know whether that 30% actually had to die or whether they just needed to remove the key genetic code that they contained. So Mittlewerks blood change could have been an alternative to extermination. At least as far as the equation goes. It could be that it was just something that was overlooked by Valencetti (what happened to the finding Valencetti thing btw?), that someone like Mittlewerk could make the equation technically change but not actually prevent the end of the world because the actual element that will cause it has become invisibile to the equation. In other words he is cheating to cause the equation to give a meaningless answer. But naturally he doesn't believe *he* could cause the end of the world.

I don't trust Alvar though. I think his blood problem suggests he had the same kind of treatment which at the least puts him in the potentially "bad" group.

Also, LOL@Me for not actually clicking and just hovering my mouse and trying to figure out what was being said. I'm tired.

I agree, Fenris, we don't know. I'm only saying, based on the way DJ Dan was talking, that we should just assume the simplest explanations. After all DJ Dan didn't know much in the ARG but Javi did and he let it slip through in his intonations and the wordings he chose.

We'll see how much better TPTB get the second time around!

I think the time delay could be easily written into the story: he's rebuilding his lab, it takes longer because he has to work in secret, he doesn't have enough of hte virus to produce the effect he desires, etc.... But I hope they don't wait until next summer too.

Here is what I was going to record on DJ Lena's podcast...Keep in mind it was a parody...

DJ Lena: Next we have Chad on the line, 'ello!

Chad:

My friend Ange and I where going to this new petting zoo, The ScoutPost to visit the talking goat, Dennis. As we were driving she told her neice and nephew, Allyson and Ryan, who Drumz that you better "Fasten Your Seat Belts" because the road was going to get very bumpy. The Boomerang Truck that we were riding swerved to avoid a DazzedElf, and crashed into this Greek Statistician named Ora Oxillini, it seems he was not paying attention to the road because he was reading off this series of letters that would save the moon from complete reconstruction. With a Twinkle in my eye I told him that he better have a Noble Lawyer because we were going to sue. He said he was terribly sorry but he had to go because he was late returning to the library and that if he did not get there soon The Book Police was going to arrest him. We exchanged information and as he turned to leave he shook my hand and said "Peace and Namaste!"

DJ Lena: Um, Peace and wha'?

Chad: Right! Which I found to be very odd since it was a common saying with these people I work with at the Sohan Federation. Deep down in my Belly Of Desire I knew that he had something to do with this project my boss, David, the Administrator was working on called the Greg Imperitive. I poked around at the office and spoke to my friend Thomas Peterson and asked for his input. He told me to to forget I ever heard of the Greg Iperititive and that I need to change my password to "DedJezter" per our IT department head and the president Alvin Sohan. As I was doing this I was contacted by a funny sounding woman named Rachel Flake who claimed to be an Experimental Film tester with Sohan, telling me to get out and run for my life, she also told me to call DJ Lena and expose the man. So that is my story DJ Lena....I was going to post it on TLEC but those people are too polite and smart.

DJ Lena: There you have it, Exposed!! Next caller...

Tonights commercial during lost might be somethign like this...

(Fade in) Alvar Hanso standing in front of a Hanso Foundation Logo...

Mr. Beardy: As you have been already told you are bound by your honor and commitment. These words could not ring more true today. We have seen our company, my company over run with coruption and evil. Today we stand anew, on the edge of building something new and exciting. The new Hanso Foundation is commited to being all that it had set out to be. With the help of our faithful followers on TLEC and Rachel Blake we can venture forward to a better tomorrow. Thank You and Namaste!

(Fade Out---fuzzy picture---) Thomas Werner Mittlewerk in a dark room...

TWM: You may have won this battle, but the war is far from over. I have the virus and I have the cure...(evil laugh)

End commercial...follow along at http://thelostcommunity.blogspot.com/

The game is once more afoot. I almost didn't catch this email from Rachel/Melanie as my spam filter tagged it but here it is.....

Not sure if you remember me from last year, but hopefully you do. I need your help again. Even though I rescued my father and he is now back in charge of his company, I have discovered that there is still a 'shadow' board that is funneling funds for their own projects. They have set up areas within each of the organizations throughout the company and although there is only a handful of members on this 'shadow' board, they are very powerful. We need proof before my father can take any action against them. I am known now, but my cousin Lorri is not. I have got her into Healthway and she will be my eyes and ears there. We have a few good people in the right places. It has taken a while, but we are now at the most dangerous point - where we are in the middle of their operations. We need to gather proof to bring these people down for good this time. I hope I can count on you.
