uh..........who says they met at all? it only said that he would send a car to pick her up. Since a password was necessary I assumed Malik would not be there. Since he and Rachel have met a password would not be necessary if he was meeting her.

I figurd from that last message he was sending a car to pick her up at 7:45pm yesterday in NYC. Since he said he needs to meet her in Norway, I assumed that car would be taking her to the airport for a flight to Norway.

So assuming the plane left at aprox. 9pm last night, how long is the flight from NY to Norway?

Approximate flight times
From London to Oslo is three hours 15 minutes, to Bergen is three hours 10 minutes and to Stavanger is three hours. From New York to Oslo is 10 hours 45 minutes (including stopover in London).

which means she did not arrive in Oslo until approx. 7am central US time.

so RB and Malik have only been together for approx. 6 hours.

I don't think we are going to get anything till late today, because they have to meet in secure location, exchange info, or do whatever it is they do together.

Then RB needs a secure connection to get info. out. That all takes time. Particularly when you have to do it all while hiding

I thought about that car thing last night. First he says "Meet me in Norway". Then he says "I'm sending a car". He sends the message coded, on the internet, where everyone and their grandma can read it. And instead of Mittlewerk having to search ALL of NYC, he now knows exactly where she will be at a specific time. Spend a half hour with old phone books and you can figure out where Rachel lived.

Wouldn't it have made more sense for Rachel just to take a cab from her secret New York bunker to JFK?

You're right, noblelawyer, I don't know why I forget about the special set of spunky girl detective rules the TLE universe is governed by. I usually just let those pass me by in the name of acceptance of the game, but I think I am a bit annoyed by the tediousness of these love notes and their very slow movement toward some sort of revelation. A primary rule of good storytelling is to "Show" not "Tell" and there's an awful lot of telling going on right now and not much action. I have a sneaking suspicion that someone accidentally erased the footage that Rachel was going to share with us this week, and this is the best alternative Rachel had to let us know what happened.

Since this is now the "DJ Dan" thread, how about we discuss/compile a list of good questions to ask, in case any of us get through to the show. I assume DJ Dan can/won't answer most of them seriously anyways, we should at least eliminate some of the duds.

Personally, I think question like like "Are you Javi?", is off-topic, considering he's not going to answer truthfully either way.

I'll start it off...

1. Do you think Gary Troup is really dead? And what happend to the last two GT interviews?

Here was the first call from the last live broadcast:

Christopher: Hey DJ Dan, just wanted to ask a question, do you know anything about the Valenzetti Equation, or erm the DHARMA initiative?

Dan: The Valen, the Valen, wa…Of course I know about the Valenzetti Equation!!! Folks, of course I know about the Valenzetti Equation, the Valenzetti Equation as we all know, those of us who’ve been tracking the movements of Rachel Blake, is the equation that is supposed to predict the end of the world. It was designed by an Italian mathematician, Enzo Valenzetti, am I right?

Christopher: Yeah.

Dan: Well what d’ya wanna know about it? What is your theory about the Valenzetti Equation?

Christopher: Well its, of course everyone knows it predicts the exact years and months, but I was wondering, who like when, you know, WHEN?

Dan: Oh you mean WHEN, well you mean like DJ Dan here is running the Valenzetti Equation like I’ve got a bunch of trained monkeys and a room with a bunch of calculators running this equation telling me the end of the world. Do you think I’d be here, do you think I’d be ranting here about doughnuts, about Berlin, about god knows what if I knew when the world was ending. Of course I wouldn’t. I don’t think anybody knows Chris, and by the way, as for the DHARMA initiative, well you know what, I once mistook the DHARMA initiative for the Karma Imperative, but er, but Tonya set me right and it turns out the Karma Imperative is actually the band that Keith Strutter was in before he was in Geronimo Jackson. (Laughs). So folks, that’s all I got to say about that. Chris thank you very much for your question, we’re gonna take, we’re gonna take another caller. CAUSE I’M LIT! I’M READY! GIVE ME ANOTHER CALLER TONYA!

That way people who are lurking won't get confused. Goldrush stuff seems especially confusing b/c some of the puzzles/riddles might be mistaken for "in-game" information related to TLE. Make sense? Just for the record when I called in during DJ Dan's live broadcast the operator did not like my original questions. I was very nice to here and convinced her to narrate a question to me. I literally wrote it down and read it on air to Dan. They cut me off before I was done, but if you listen close you can still hear me while Dan is talking.

The full question they told me to ask (after putting me on hold several times) was: "Tell me your thoughts on nanotechnology and can it be used to spread diseases?" - Which I think makes his answer about not seeing anything on TV in 'September' more interesting. Also the operator was conversing with a man in the background, perhaps TPTB?

Very Cool! Interesting info....thanks

Hi Maven... it is a rather easy (so far except for a couple things) game that AOL is doing. If you go to AOL.com there is a link to the game. They have videos that explain the game. The game is being released in chunks... so there are about 4 task to complete per day. After you solve clue/riddle/puzzle/etc. you are link to a AOL site to find the "gold bar". Really it is a ploy to get you to look at sites. One last night was different... the answer was revieled by listening for an answer during the new Survivor show. Fun but the Lost Experience Game is much more intellectual. Most of the AOL game is TV, movie, and music trivia based.

Morning all: Glad to see some more 50-somethings are coming out of the woodwork! Well, TPTB must have researched this new podcast date and time to make sure they didn't screw up again! And it seems to make more people happy. Can't wait!

Going to the Santa Monica/Acura-Apollo thing tonight. Finally, I get a bar! See all you LA area TLECrs there!

I sure don't get the pace of this game. You would think we would have building momentum and excitement as we move toward the finish, but not so much.

I swear, if we get a note on Monday that merely describes an exciting event in Norway, somebody's gonna get whacked with an Apollo bar. I can see it now...

"Dear Malik, can't believe we survived that shootout and then the shark attack and then had to parachute off the highest building in Norway while that army of Mittlewerk clones chased us with laser guns. Then GidgetGirl and Hugh swooped in with their helicopter and saved us, thank goodness. That was amazing. You almost had to see it to believe it! Kisses - RB"

FYSB: I can always count on you for a great synopsis! LOL

Yeah, this pace is excrutiating! We've second-guessed TPTB all along the way, so I hope the "finale" is not one big let-down. We're speculating that this meet in Narvik is with Alvar himself and he reveals he's related to her (probably her father). TPTB probably thought this was going to be a spectacular ending. NOT!

hey maven! here's what's weird...rachel put up the whole whereisalvar site, made all the candy bars, sent them out into the world and promised a big reveal at the end. meanwhile malik offers to set up a meeting with alvar. then she waits a month to respond to malik about meeting "him". if the big reveal at the end of whereisalvar is the meeting malik arranges, then that makes no sense.

9/16/2006 12:15:00 PM
Blogger maven said...

FYSB: Right! This whole ending scenario makes no sense in the real world! We wouldn't be doing this at this pace if we were so anxious to save the world and find Alvar Hanso! Drawing this out to coincide with the premiere of S3 has been poorly planned!

9/16/2006 01:13:00 PM
Blogger Fenris said...

FYSB. Yep, that is the most likely occurance. The whole thing makes no sense whatsoever, unless we assume Rachel is doing what she did before in that she is slowly dribbling us information long after the fact. For some reason she insists on us being so far behind her in current events that any involvement we actually have is rendered almost completely redundant.

What I want to know is where is the part where *WE* are involved in this story? So far it's hard even to be under the illusion that anything we have done has had any impact on the Hanso Foundation at all. Our entire envolvement has led to a handful of shout outs and them having to revise that whole island map fiasco. Probably the closest we got to real involvement was when we had that korean translation thing and that IIRC was "properly" translated after everyone had put in a load of effort, by "Kwon-Yong Su", a blatant plant. Other then that....uh, all this would have happened exactly like this with or without our involvement. Rachel didn't *need* us to do the glyph hunt nor did she *need* us to get chocolate bars. She's mearly *required* it of us.

Don't get me wrong there has been some fun along the way, but most of it has been more like a slightly interactive TV show (like one with occasional phone ins and some message boards) rather then a game.

So, there better be some hardcore user involvement in act 5.

Anyway, It doesn't make sense that Rachel is doing a "Where is Alvar" site and THEN has Malek get hold of her. Also what happened to DJ Dans supposed new quest to track down Alvar? If the answer is they simply scrapped it to do the live show, then that's cool with me. But still, it's odd.

9/16/2006 01:14:00 PM
Blogger maven said...

Hey, Fenris! Don't hold your breath for more involvment in Act 5! I expect a lot more exposition than action...TPTB probably busted their production budget already. LOL I'm hoping for at least a video of the big meet in Narvik.

fenris, all...the only way this could possibly make sense is if there are TWO reveals coming up.

Apollo website went up August 8.

DJ Dan broadcast was Aug 11. Malik offers to set up a meeting.

Rachel puts up whereisalvar Aug 22 with the promise of a big reveal after a certain number of bars had been discovered.

Rachel responds to Malik Sept. 9

Questions:
1. Did RB merely take advantage of an opportunity when she hijacked the Apollo giveaway with her whereisalvar bars in the 14 days between the two sites going live?

2. Did RB time her communications with Malik so he would set up the meeting to coincide with the discovery/posting of the final bar?

3. How could she promise a big reveal at the end of whereisalvar if she hadn't communicated with Malik before she told us there would be a big reveal?

I'm willing to suspend a great deal of disbelief for this game, but if we don't get two reveals out of these two different tracks, that would mean that RB is either psychic or invented time travel.

9/16/2006 02:05:00 PM
Blogger Capcom said...

Fenris and Fasten, you got to the heart of the matter. We are totally not involved in this now, and we're just waiting for someone else tell us what is happening their life, in an occasional paragraph. :-( This is boring, and I feel bad that TPTB let it get like this right at the point where the game should be getting to a building up momentum before the big ending. TPTB know what they are going to give us, and it may be excting when it finally happens (hopefully!) but without any action on our end at this point, they are going to lose players. They could have at least kept the Hanso page going, or have RB put updates on her travel log (how much could that cost?) so we could at least have new things to read straight from her. I'm tired of reading what TOG, Ninja and Speaker are thinking. What is (at least WAS) important in the game is what RB is thinking and doing, and we sould be hearing from her directly (but not in a cheesy hi/greatwork/seeya email either). Bah humbug. As Stan on South Park would say, "This is really ef'd up right here." :-( So sad.

I hear ya capcom. I would like to hear more from Rachel...talking TO us rather than eavesdropping on her and Malik's conversation.

I can't believe that Rachel ditched us the second she got a boyfriend.

Wait til he dumps her, then she'll be all "hey guys, whatcha doin? wanna come over? wanna watch my video? here try on my disguises. let's hang out"

Those "love notes" have been entirely too much exposition. I long for "old days" of stophanso....updates with real videos and information. This big reveal buildup makes no sense whatsoever. Why, oh why, is it being dragged out so long? There's no sense of urgency in stopping the evil TWM and his gang anymore, is there? Now we most likely have to wait until the 24th podcast for anything to happen. (Wait: I hear a lot of "flies" dropping!)

Hi everyone. I've been lurking in TLE for months now, and, watching it all from a certain distance, I see we're all a little bit frustrated. You started it all excited, the Hanso site gave you a lot of homework, and it looked like it would be a hell of an ARG. Then came the RB videos, which seemed like a promise for a bright future in game. How romantic.
I guess TLE started to decline at the glyph hunt, althought the Sri Lanka thing gave us a thrill and made all the pain worth it.
I'm not saying it wasn't fun - it was! But, IMHO, there are only two different endings for this "epic": the disappointing one and the finale that will make this one of the best games ever, the one that retrieves the "magic" we felt in the beggining.

Oh yeah, excuse my lame english - i'm not american, british, or australian.

LOL. FYSB. That's pretty much it. Rachel got herself a fella and now she doesn't want to hang with her friends anymore. Sheesh.

Maven, FYSB, Capcom - your all right. This is basically just exposition and it is frankly, BORING. Sure the DJ Dan show will be good, but that is because Javi and his crew are entertaining not because their involvement in the story is particularly thrilling or that they are is particularly good at this point.

I think the key thing with the glyph hunt is that the plot behind it made no sense. Probably the actual concealing of the clues (well some of them anyway, like the UK live hunts for example (I'm still sad about missing out)) wasn't actually *that* badly done, but the fact that it was basically Rachel making us jump through hoops for her own amusement took a lot of the glamour from it.

HE was a massive mistake. Yes, the video was a big reveal, but squeezing it out in so many parts killed off the thrill factor of what it was revealing. It was the case that before a frame was released prooving one thing, there had already been many frames hinting at that, so the proof just got a "meh..." response, while the hints where just hints and although speculation built up it was in such small chunks. I mean a LOT of regularly drifted away during HE. It wasn't that fragments was a bad idea, or that the reveals were bad, it was that it should have been something that took no more then a week.

But I've said it before this ARG falls down because of it's flow. They seem to have tried to figure a flow for each segment but totally missed the flow of the overall arg (who was their "big picture" guy?). Each act builds up to semi-conclusion, but each sucsessive act has been slower paced and less exciting then the last. Really it's quite impressive that they have managed to do that. I remember at the time, half jokingly I claimed TPTB sat around in a room debating how they could possibly make Act 4 worse then Act 3, just as Act 4 was kicking off. I'm starting to wonder if that was a joke or the terrifying truth.

It's not hard to see though, looking around that so many have lost faith in this ARG and it's ability to provide anything great in Act 5. Seems we are all fully focused on the start of season 3 instead. Not that people couldn't have expected the building excitement for the show to be greater then the excitment for the arg, but perhaps no one expected it to blot it out and help drive people away so much.

As for WIA, I think the ARG has had massive issues with synchronisation since the very start. I reckon that there is only one reveal from WIA and it will be the conclusion of Malick setting up this meeting with Alvar and it's just a mistake that WIA was live before Malick had even phoned in to DJ Dan.

Of course there is one possibility. There is another character that is yet to be introduced to the story who is the one Malick can set up a meeting with. They have made a point of not mentioning the name and we've all assumed it is Alvar (while strangely, people refused to accept Mr.Beardy was Alvar). Then, yes, there could be two reveals.

Odds on that are currently 25-1, Odds of it being a case of bad plot timing 1-3

as for DJ Dan, the timing is pretty bad for me, but I *CAN* be there for it (with the sacrifice of my sleep) so I am happy. It's very hard for them to find a time to do the podcast where it won't effect people, but I think this is better then the previous choice when a lot of people in the US and most in the UK would be at work. Sorry Stracker - greater good for the greater number and all that. Btw, House rocks. :) I just watched 3x02, fantastic episode!

Blogger Capcom said...

Right again Fenris.

BTW what is exposition? I'm totally new to ARGs, so does this mean that players are looky-loos only, since that's mostly what we've been doing lately? HE was was too long, but even 1 month would have been better than 2+ months duration. Oh well, let's keep our hopes up for something juicy soon! Always the eternal Pollyanna. :-|

All in all though, if this is the first time that TPTB ever tried such a thing, they gave it the ol' college try. Phase 1 was awesome! I'll look back fondly on that part, it was full of creepy science and espionage, just the way I like it.

9/16/2006 07:29:00 PM
Blogger FYSB said...

capcom, exposition is basically talking about what happened/is happening rather than showing it...the way rachel described how she escaped from sri lanka in her note to malik, rather than letting us see it and experience it through a video.

FYSB, Fenris et al:

I agree, two big reveals, one related to WIA.com and one re: her meeting with Alvar.

And the reason it took her so long to respond to Malek was that she was hiding out in a broken down factory, unwrapping Mittlework's candy bars by hand and carefully rewrapping them with WIA bars.

9/16/2006 09:49:00 PM
Blogger FYSB said...

that's a very good question winged_eel. i think it used to be a delightfully active verb, but sadly rachel took it and expositioned the he11 out of it until it was reduced to a love note from malik and hence it became a mere subject/object word-toy. i just hope she leaves the adjectives alone.

Hi, joann! Yes. I had a VIP pass. It's pretty important to have it. It lets you have the food and drinks. We happen to find a guy you had a bunch of bars near the entrance and we all talked him into giving us each one. So we got 2! Other than that, they were pretty strict about giving out the bars.

besides budget constraints on TLE, doesn't anyone think it's odd we havent seen Rachel since comicon. She posted so many videos before and for such a skilled hacker(ya right) she could hide a video somewhere without being chased. If rachel had not been at comiccon there would be a lot more momentum to the idea that she never made it out of Sri-lanka. At the very least it seems more likely to me that she is working for mittlewerk and this is all a ruse to trick malik into devulging alvars location and expose hanso critics(apollo bars),

The SHADE people seem to be able to stay in character even better than the Apollo distributers. I bet some starving actors would have loved to be hired by ABC to act out the part of the Apollo Candy virus spreaders at the handout venues, and would have probably hammed it up nicely for us ARGers. Heck, I bet even some Rennaisance Fair actors would have done a great job keeping behind the 4th wall as well. :-)

BTW, that Survival Mission game on the ABC site has some things in common with TLE. It starts off great, is very entertaining, and then just quits in the middle with no rhyme or reason, and you're left up in the air with nothing to do and nowhere to go with it. Deja vu. :-(

This is just ridiculous. The TLE/RB has totally lost all reasonable credibility of her story's supposed urgency, in my book. I've changed my mind, at this point I actually would take a pointless email or blog update from TPTB/her that said, "Hey guys, great work on the video. I know it's taking me a long time to get back to you in helping save the world, and that I did say that this was an urgent mission and all. I'm in the process of gleaning some very important info, so hang tight and don't bother checking any HF websites or allied blogs for a few more days. Enjoy the end of summer like I am -- I mean, while I'm working hard -- and we'll soon return to saving the world!" Puh.

Night all.

The chat function on the site occurs when the show is on, under the listen function. It opens up when the player opens up (quicktime I believe). And I couldn't possibly say "open up" more today.

open up open up open up.

Totally agree with everyone's thought about how senseless the game has become. You've said it very well, peaceandnamaste and capcom! Just put yourself in place of Rachel...all along you wanted to expose THF and find Alvar Hanso...you finally uncover Mittelwerk's sinister agenda...people died to get it to you (Gidgetgirl and Hugh and, probably, de Zylva)! What do you do? You don't sit on your butt and slowly dribble out the video. You try your hardest to get the word out, and fast! Maybe take it to news organizations, throw it out there all over the net, etc. And you also don't take over a month to set up a meet with the mysterious HIM, do you? You get yourself to Norway!

The pace of this game has really become an enigma. If TPTB are building to a big reveal, this is not the way to do it. They better have a really big twist to this...we've second-guessed them every step of the way pretty much. I think we're all expecting the big meet to be with Alvar Hanso in Narvik and that he reveals his relationship with Rachel.

Hi Guys,

I'm sure it's pretty quiet here but I thought that I'd say Hi and sorry I missed you all over the weekend but my laptop died :(

Mind you, seems like nothing much happened.

Sara,

My guess is that their is at least a month left in the game. The appollo bars say best if used by OCT 26th. That's my guess for the end of the game!!!

passafist-I think the bars say Oct-23-06, but HOW can they drag this out until then? Wait, let me rephrase that...I will just die if they carry the game on until then, unless it picks up quickly!

Really, think about all the work involved in extending the game...adding additional days and days of no clues, no word from rachel....that's a lot of time and effort to pull that off.

I want the story to continue. I want the game to progress. I am tired of pointless chasing your tails crud. IT seems that this alone to make little interns crazy trying to collate all that marketing information. Give me something fun to do. Answer at least one question. I have about 8 of them. I didn't mind the marketing when I was advancing the story. But when all you are doing is marketing. I am bored with it.

Good morning, etc., Tee-Lekkers!

Good thought about the Bad Twin reaction, Peace, they could/should do something like that. I sometimes check that TWM vid on the shutdown Hanso site in case they've changed it to some other TWM propaganda, but no joy there. Also, ditto, Maven, Ryan and Sara. And I also figured that since the mysterious Liddy was more in-game and not of the show, that they'd reveal that secret too in the game.

I'm telling ya, TLE is looking more like the stupid ABC Lost game on the ABC Lost page, as every day with nothing to do passes. That game starts out so fun, and then just pfffffffffft! Nuttin'.

Perhaps now that the head-TPTB are filming S3, and they left the TLE to the assistant PTBs, they are not aware of how the game is unraveling. And by unraveling, I mean falling to pieces. Anyone know the information phone number on the Hawaiian islands so we could track TPTB down? We need to rat on those ARG assistants!

Oh well, at least it's fun hearing from, and talking with, you all!
