Clue #111 - Fragment Code "theflashlight"

Fragment Code "theflashlight" is now working on hansoexposed.com. We first mentioned this code in Clue #109 when it was found in this Jeep ad written on the curb to the right of the vehicle. The video fragment is of Mittlewerk saying, "without allowing for any more suffering than is absolutely necessary. (sigh)"

Thanks to dazzedelf, Bryan, and ib4uc for emailing us this important update!

TPTB have dropped the ball so many times now it's getting ridiculous. yes, when they release a clue before the code is available on he.com, that does cause problems. cause then we start trying to find it, which takes time.

so now, we have to wonder, when we find a clue, should we start looking for the code right away or should we wait 4 days before looking for it?

Ihorse007, how does releasing the code before releasing the fragment cause problems? If anything, it makes life a little easier. All we had to do was wait until #45 was released, and then plug "theflashlight" into HE.com ( we already knew "theflashlight" would be one of the next codes).

I'm a nanotechnology researcher..

Cool! I'm such a wanna be. But science isn't my field, just something I like to read and speculate about.

The article could start with general definitions of nanotechnology including fictional uses from other science fiction genres. I found a great defintion in the Encyclopeadia Galatica online.

Then I was thinking it would be nice to take each of the areas Hanso is working in (from their old site) and describe how nanotechnology could be playing a role. Only I don't know enough to do that for all the areas. Nor do I know if such speculation would be helpful on a *research* blog.

So those are my current ideas? Any feedback?

personally, I don't want easy... i want fun hunts, puzzles and riddles... I would prefer it if the fragments were really released in synch with when HE.com says that the frag code has been released... then the first person to FIND the code gets credit for it... that's the way it should be IMHO... but I'm not about to send anyone poop over it... I'm still havin' fun in this game... :)

8/21/2006 02:41:00 PM
Blogger LHorse007 said...

hansolow, it causes problems because there were only codes released at the time, so we were led to believe that the ad's pertained to codes that had already been released. when we entered 'theflashlight' and saw it did not accept it, we thought, ok, it's not a code, start looking, looked all over the jeep sight, watched the flashlight 108 times, did some anagrams for 'theflashlight' checked those out. All of that was a WASTE OF TIME.

8/21/2006 02:41:00 PM
Blogger vexingmodstwo said...

Because, hansolow, it takes the game out of it.

Once someone else has done the work and everyone knows he code, it becomes a race to see who can refresh the stats page the fastest and longest waiting for the fragment to be released.

If they released the fragment FIRST who ever finds the glyph first has the change to enter the code in first.

Pretty simple concept.

I agree with vexing, I think it's important for the person who finds it to get credit for the glyph. It would be nice if they don't release a glyph several days before we can actually find the code, but I'd rather be searching for a code we can't find for a couple of hours rather than pass over one that's actually a code because it doesn't work.

I do wish the film would just be finished, already. But I'm guessing well get a final bunch the first or 2nd week of Sept, and then we'll see Rachel again for a bit, and then there will be some huge cliffhanger so the we tune in again next summer.

8/21/2006 02:49:00 PM
Blogger HansoLow said...

Ihorseoo7, I have to disagree. Ever since "nanite" was released in the Sprite ad, we've known that sometimes a code can be released before the fragment goes up on HE.com. I think it was fairly obvious afgter "tribalwars" appeared in the exact same spot, that "theflashlight" would be the next fragment code. If you wasted your time trying to read it as some kind of clue, well, that's your problem (no offense).

But I agree with belly. I do enjoy it more where there is some kind of a hunt involved; where we have to find the code instead of it just being given to us. The Verizon ad did this a little better by giving us the glyph first, which then sent us looking on the Verizon website, which led us to find the "vaccine" code.

Personally, it doesn't really matter to me if the chicken comes first, or the egg.

However, the problems that people seem to have with it mostly stem from the leaderboard, which is about the only thing I have thought was pointless in this stage.

If there wasn't a leaderboard, it wouldn't matter who found something first, because no one would know or care or be keeping track.

christy, I guess neither one of us should be using the word "we" because we can't speak for everyone. But I think it's fair to say that there were some people who thought it was a clue, while 'others' realized that it was presented in the same exact way that "tribalwars" was presented. So those people knew that it would be a future code.

We've seen them put multiple codes on in-game sites, but not two codes in exactly the same place. It'd be like them putting a different glyph on the same shirt on the djdan site.

The PR person for the mall - knows nothing of this event. She reserched and realized it was part of the whole LOST thing and she's not sure what's going on. She's gonna research a bit more and see if she can find anything more. Told her if I heard something I would let her know too.

She afraid that someone's gonna be walking around the mall and get mobbed. I somehow doubt that would happen - but they are really touchy with sercurity sometimes.

Ihorse007, that's not what i'm saying. If you read my last few comments, I said that I enjoy the hunt...not when they are just given to us.

What I was originally commenting on was your complaint:

"If you are going to release a clue, MAKE SURE THE CODE WORKS ON HE.COM! One of the first things I tried when I saw the Jeep ad, as I'm sure others did too, was enter 'theflashlight' at HE.com and of course it did not work. I proceeded to spend some time trying to figure out what else they meant by it, found anagrams for it including "the last flight" which made me search oceanicflight815.com and such. but of course that time was wasted because TPTB dropped the ball again and let a clue come out before making it work on he.com"

All I'm saying is that there's no reason to complain NOW, after we've known for some time that TPTB have released some of the codes in certain publications before the fragment is released on HE.com. If you thought that "theflashlight" was a clue that sent you on a wild goose chase, well then, good for you for trying. But, personally, I knew that it would be a waste of my time to search it out when I already knew that "theflashlight" was simply going to be a future code (not a clue).

PS...sorry to everyone who is getting sick of this debate

Actually, Tysons is a very nice place, if you haven't been in a while. They have some really upscale eatries in the new wing - very posh. Place has come a long way from being a one floor open air mall in the 70's to an upscale shopping center.

Gang! I think there are many ways people are enjoying this game. But I can say this, because I have been here from day one, and I was through it all with you guys. This phase of the game is not as fun or captivating as WE wished it to be. The real world stuff is nice and TLEC and Speakers way of having a clue hunt was more indiciative to what we are used to in the other phases. But I think that getting a clue is great IF it leads to the code. But when the CODE is there and doesn't work, why go back and try it? That is the major beef here. A code is released but doesn't work? That speaks of poor design. All this and a quarter may get you a cup of coffee at Dunkin Donuts! IMHO!!!!! never forget that part!!!

I haven't really been working on the TWM section of the film because there are still too many pieces missing.

I'm not convinced that there is a section of him before the video. I'm waiting for a frag that shows him starting the video before I even start working both ends of the DHARMA film.

Anyone have any leads on #42 before I do another super long post on it? I can't believe how hard I looked for #29... I'll be honest and say I do want on that leader board... must be a personality trait of mine or whatever, but it pushes me to work pretty hard to find these glyph codes... Makes it fun, provides some incentive to work hard and drives us to search our tails off looking for the next clue...

I put a "leaderboard" up here at work once and it got mixed reviews as well... meh... can't please all the people all the time, right?

Anyway... anyone got any leads on #42?

kyle - no prob. I'm hoping to make the Tysons Corner one - depends on the time, and it seems no one knows. Pick the wrong time and there's and it's a rush hour nightmare. Trying to think of the ABC type links to Tysons and all I can come up with is the Disney Store. But then ABC owns ESPN so why the change? What else is at Tysons (really an odd location to have this)? There used to be a Warner Bros store - it closed years ago. Disney is still my only connection.

ok, but here is a rule:

when you enter a code into HE and it doesn't work, that should mean its not a code, i.e. you're wrong.

it shouldn't mean that it is a code, but TPTB have shanked it and not released it yet.

otherwise, we should all just be entering everything we thought could ever have been a code over and over and over and over again in the hopes that we entered it too soon before.

OK, last post on this subjuect because it's getting really old.

Ihorse, dfizz, and anyone else keeping up with this debate,

All I'm saying is that I've come to accept that TPTB have allowed certain companies and ad agencies to place advertisements in magazines with codes that will work for future fragments. No, I don't think that is the smart way to approach it. Yes, I do enjoying the game and hunting for glyphs, and wish they would do more than just giving us the codes.

But right now, I know that when I see a word or a grouping of words ("tribalwars", "theflashlight") that is partially hidden in a Jeep ad, or a Verizon ad, or a Sprite ad, and it doesn't work for me right away....chances are that it WILL work in the future, and I'll just have to wait until the next fragment is released to see if it works. But I'm not going to come in here and complain about it.

That's all....again, sorry to those of you who had to wade through this.

(opens with him walking through the streets looking perplexed)

Hi and Welcome to ask Javi. I am Javi. I am experiencing an existential crisis. I walk the mean streets seeking an answer to a question, an easy question. A question I should know. A question so basic that I cannot under stand why it eludes me. why it vexest me. why it taunts me day and night. I have sought an answer, but my efforts have met with failure, abject infuriating failure. Such failure that I now wish the question had never been asked. What is this simple question: (to black with more text)

If you could come back in your next life as any animal, what would it be? (back to DJDan, uhm, Javi wandering streets)

Other people, people I know, have answers to this question. People like this guy, "dinosaur guy in the 21st century" (back to Javi on streets) And he's not the only one. Check out this out this rather disturbing answer (Javi/Speaker) "majestic ferret or graceful cat... the boar!!" (Javi/streets) But wait one guy knows himself so wellhis answer came in the form of a simple image, (animal of the muppets playing a drum kit). If all these people can answer this question, why can't I? (Camera starts spinning with Javi in a circle while you read:) I am in Hell!

To be continued...

Hi and welcome to ask Javi.
(returns to Javi and camera spinning)
WHEN YOU LAST SAW ME I WAS IN HELL!

THE VERY FABRIC OF MY REALITY RIVEN BY ONE SIMPLE QUESTION. If you could come back in your next life as any animal, what would it be?

Downtrodden, I return home, the streets brought me no answers, only...

Street vendor hot dogs wrapped in bacon. Will I ever know the answer? Can I ever know the answer? (Javi in elevator) My mind swims in questions. I am a stumped man. Hey look it's my dog, the kremlin!
(looking down at white funny dog and it talks mentally - letter coloring changes -)
HI... "MASTER"

You can hear my thoughts?

YES, I KNOW EVERYTHING YOU KNOW AND EVERYTHING YOU WILL EVER KNOW

Seriously... everything?

DO NOT TEST ME. I CAN BRING YOU DOWN WITH A WORD!

Ok, ok, ... can I ask you one question?

HMMM, RISKY. YOU ALREADY KNOW TOO MUCH BUT.. OK... ONE QUESTION

I really need to know. If I could come back in my next life as any animal what would I choose to be?

I WILL ANSWER YOUR QUESTION SOMEDAY

Excuse me... someday?

YES AND ON THAT DAY

Uh-huh?

YOU WILL CALL ME ...
(Close up on dog's eyes) MASTER

Javi backs away out of frame, puts back on his sunglasses...

The End.

Special thanks to

Mike
Matt
Speaker (Who is NOT me)
No Kremlins were harmed IN the making of this film

As far as TLE goes, I solved it

NIMOS BAUD, which of course means Nemos Bod, which if you watch Finding Nemo, you know of course this means he has a bad fin.

Bad fin rhymes with Bad Twin. And this doesn't mean the book. This of course means the least talented fo the NKOTB people.

Jonathon Knight is the clue.

he's attempting a comeback without the band.

I don't think he's Speaker because it would keep him too busy and he does have a job (or several) already. I think the amount of work for DJ Dan would be about right though IMHO.

The other day the Verizon speaker wasn't working in my firefox even though it reloads the Java or flash or whatever every time, so I'm losing out here or there and it would be a miracle if I ever found a 2nd glyph without being the ONLY person there at the time ;-)

Anyway, any thoughts as to there being glyphs at all or any of these Apollo bar stops?

I'm going to be at this 1st to be as it's EST and in Central Park, so I'll bring my camera (take some pics & video) and maybe my laptop just in case OR could there be in a glyph in Apollo bars...

I apologize if this has been said. Has anyone seen the letyourcompassguideyou page with the tiny DI99FFTR731 code? I have not found any info on it.

I do not try and figure out the non-game identities of ingame characters.

I am following the hacker stuff on TLE carefully. I suspect that gee won't provide any more info. today though since he/she said phase 2 would come at a time of his/her choosing.

some ppl in the comments over at TLE.com figured it to stand for SUBDOMAIN... so it's probably going to be "http://(somthing).thelostexperience.com... just a guess...

By "some ppl", you mean me.

Hey Lostpedian,

I don't know who is maintaining Lostpedia's fragment listing, but the "Vaccine" clip is in the wrong place.

I only say that because the background of AH is wrong for that section of the film.

I don't know who all does what on that site, but maybe you can pass it along.

If you want to, that is.

:)

Hey guys... I just looked at what was happening over at TLE.com and came up with a theory, then saw that someone else has been playing with the same idea...

I posted:

Biotronx-
Great tries... I hadn't made it to these comments yet, but was trying reversals of known "LOST" words and this website as the subdomain because those are the clues.

The signing of notes with letters that are an anagram for subdomain and the logo "reversal" or is it something to do with "mirroring", backwards, etc.?
-------------
I've tried a bunch of sumdomains that are backwards, etc., but isn't their logo now seen as a through a mirror?

marcus - I think that even if you put in the right subdomain nothing would happend as I don't believe that the hacker has activated the subdomain yet. but that is just my guessing.

lol... alright...

Lostpedian was the first to comment over at the current post on TLE about it being SUBDOMAIN and it is my belief that he/she is correct!

Here's the lostpedia entry for DI 9FFTR731... for anyone who hasn't seen it yet.

no, I am with you noble...

just don't know enough about the web, yet wondered if mirroring only had to do with servers & drives, etc.

There are mirror twins, too... useless bit of factology.

Out for a bite & some wine so catch ya L8rs!

Way to call "a cigar a cigar", vexing...

plug the letters into an anagram matrix and what do you get as options that stick out..?

Let's just play nice and stick to our fabulous TeamPlay.

I don't know who they are, but isn't there a possibility that they were given a glyph, like our Admin, and that's how they're choosing for the search to go?
