Clue #136 - Other Girl Special

The Other Girl posted with a message about a cryptic email she recieved filled with numbers. Decode the numbers (using this website) and you'll find that it's Rachel's quick reply to Malik. Her message answers some important questions we've been asking. She says...

"I knew you were behind that. I just knew. He never told me, you know?

When I hit the ground I was sure I was dead. The camera was broken, they were dragging me to my feet... and then a burst of gunfire in the air. These were SCIENTISTS, unarmed. They hit the ground. But not Mittelwerk. He kept coming until de Zylva turned the shots in his direction. Once Mittelwerk was face down on the ground, de Zylva grabbed my hand and we were gone. With the camera.

He didn't talk. He said he was de Zylva, that was it. We knew Mittelwerk was already in pursuit, but we stuck to tunnels that had been dug out during various wartimes. We had some close calls. The goal was the American embassy in Colombo, but when we got there, we knew that was impossible. It was being watched -- the airport, too. de Zylva said The Hanso Foundation had too much influence in Colombo to take the risk.

And, then, they caught wind of us again. We knew we could be caught at any second, and the only important thing was that video. EVIDENCE of Mittelwerk's world-wide decimation plot. I'd planned for this. All I needed was a secure, high-speed connection. The Hanso goons knew it too. They surrounded the place while I was uploading. We barricaded ourselves, de Zylva knew an escape route. I barely got out, made my way to a friend of de Zylva's who could get me to India. I swear, I waited for de Zylva. But he never came.

I'm so sorry."

Thanks to jonnygasman & Matt the Pale for emailing us about this clue!

Posted in the other thread, moving the discussion here;

Hey guys

A new clue, and I missed it! Started a new college course today, so i'm happy that after a day of anxiety I can chill by catching up with all that's happened since yesterday! Great work on finding and decoding the new clues!

Guess what, I was search around for 'Da Zylva' and 'Da Silva' (Rachel said she only heard the name, so it could easily be spelt Da Silva'), and found a Wimala Da Silva, who seems to have strong ties to Sri Lanka. Another search produced the obituary page of a news website. On that page I found the name Da Silva in this entry;

WICKRAMASOORIYA L.W. DHARMASENA Beloved husband of retired teacher Mrs Wimala de Silva, loving father of Anura (Inland Revenue), Warnitha (Vijaya College, Matale), Thilani (Swarnamali B.M.V., Kandy), Theja (RDA, Kandy) and Bhagya (Veterinary Surgeon, Thirappane), fatherinlaw of Dr Hasini (Piliyandala), Reggie (Commercial Bank, Matale), Keerthi (Principal, Dharmaraja College, Kandy), Dr Srilal (Matale), expired. Cremation at Matale Cemetery at 3.00 p.m. Saturday 12th July. “Pubudu”, Elwala, Ukuwela, Matale.

It's probably not in-game or relevent in any way, I just found it interesting that Mrs Wimala de Silva has a husband with the word DHARMA in his name...

It's also quite odd that Mrs Wimala da Silva is on the board of a centre for woman's research, based in Colombo, Sri Lanka..

:P

It's nice to have answers and story continuation so soon after HE.com has been resolved.

It's also a shame that the 71st fragment slot a few of us spotted turned out (at this time anyway) to be yet another bug with the site, but if the camera was broken when Rachel was tackled to the floor then fair enough that there's no video.

I'm not sure I could've handled more badly dubbed gunshots anyway!

Looks like though we're sat waiting for the 22nd for WIA.com's big reveal, although I wouldn't be surprised if THF.org is relaunched soon to fight the war on a propaganda level.

Granted it took a while but Rachel finally exposed the Sri Lanka plot (although she's not said if it was ever initiated after the gun fight - Mittelwerk is NOT dead) so THF are going to have to do some serious damage control now, especially as WIA.com is releasing more information too.

I hope we do get a few more bits to start tying all this together - we still have Dr. Hackett and the "psychotropic compound" to resolve so more info there would be good.

I just hope we're not twiddling our thumbs for a fortnight!

dazzedelf:

That's probably the biggest question we have at this stage now: if Apollo Candy is part of the Hanso Group, how is Rachel using the Apollo Bars as a method to gather a worldwide audience for the next big Hanso bashing?

The only thought process here is the confirmation that there is a Hanso Group of companies, of which the Foundation is only a part. We've always thought for a while that there has to be some umbrella-type structure going on - other areas of Hanso research or business is the source of revenue for the Foundation's operations (even if Alvar was Bill Gates rich he couldn't fund the Foundation soley for long).

It's entirely possible that the other members of the Hanso empire didn't know what the Foundation was doing until recently, then with the revelation of the Foundation's operations in Sri Lanka and Dr. Hackett's work with Apollo Candy, there's some form of internal conflict with members trying to move away and oppose the Foundation...

...led by Alvar Hanso.

I'd love it if after all this time and (the theorised) conflict between Hanso and Mittelwerk causing Hanso' exit has come full circle: Hanso has come out of hiding and can take a more proactive role in stopping Mittelwerk now that he's seen Rachel and her quest. Using his influence in other areas of his empire he's providing Rachel with this Apollo Candy outlet (of course she doesn't know who's set it up).

Where is Alvar Hanso? He's in Rachel's next big video!!

*crosses fingers* we need something of this magnitude to bring this ARG to a massive climax before Season 3.

I think Alvar Hanso is Rachel Blake's Father. I believe that after the oracle bars come in, Rachel is going to have a sword fight with Alvar Hanso over top the chocolate factor where the Apollo bars, and designer Viruses are made!! During the fight Alvar is going to reveal that he is Rachel's Father, and Mittlewerk is actually Rachel's Twin Brother who was horribly aged and disfigured with a bad pony tail in a lab experiment gone wrong during "bring your kid to work day".

After the big reveal Alvie is going to cut Rachel's hand off *still holding her trusty six shooter highspeed laptop* and it's going to fall into the chocolate mixers. Then Rachel is going to scream "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" and fall into the designer virus vat!

After that, Alvar is going to have his chauffeur drives him to the nearest White Castle for some Sliders.

OK here's a topic while we're waiting for the next major installment: is Rachel stupid?

I say she's not. Rachel's problem is emotionally-driven naivity.

Whatever her personal agenda is, it's her strength and her weakness. it's brought her this far, but it's also clouding her vision big time.

Rachel's mistake was unplugging from the computer: as Persephone she's doing what she knows best and is in her comfort zone. But it was when she went IRL and tried to be Sydney Bristow (you're cute Jamie but not in Jen's league - sorry) it all came tumbling down.

For example, writing the Sri Lanka video into a self-propagating virus would have been so cool - for every copy THF find and erase, the virus copies another 10 across the web, e-mailing everybody's Blogger account who has posted at stophanso.rachelblake.com. This would be the work of a hacker.

Instead, she's panicked and taken the route she did - by the time we've found everything Sri Lanka could well be over and the global deployment has started.

However all this naivity has made her easy to use as a vessel for information - whoever is protecting her inside the Foundation (this de Zylva/Da Silva character??) can obviously keep her mission going.

Rachel's naivity has turned her into a playing piece in this grand chess game that is the conflict inside the Foundation. She's too valuable to be a pawn - perhaps a Rook? She is very linear and makes long, sweeping movements...

If the anti-stupid virus killed the US government first we might have a chance of breathing intelligence back into our UK leaders.

I think the problem may be as much with the budget for the TLEC and the acting talent(or lack therof) of the actress playing Rachel.

I also wonder who is doing the writing - Whilst Cuse, Javi et all might have written the outlain I imagine they have used some junior ABC screenwriter to do some of the script.

I'm sure Rachel's not meant to be stupid, I think the problem is that up against the skill of TLEC most people would appear a little slow ;)

I concur Dark Angel.

My very next comment was going to be a warning about not confusing the in-game events with the manner in which the ARG has been written and run.

At the end of the day, this is supposed to be a game, and the glyph hunt and HE.com was a fantastic idea. It was the execution of that phase (bug-ridden site, painfully slow and ill-timed glyph releases) that dashed its effectiveness. I don't have a real problem either with the idea of Rachel splitting the video up for safety as a concept, but again it was the painfully slow release of the fragments that damaged its credibility.

I personally don't have a problem with any of the acting! Jamie whatshername is either beautifully acting an over-emotional computer geek out of her depth or really is struggling with her role - either way Rachel Blake has been portrayed perfectly and I've required little suspension of disbelief.

Hugh McIntyre was believable too - even a super-fluid PR mouthpiece can faulter when thinking on his feet, hence the ridiculous "oh the web admin put the wrong picture up" excuse (although as a web developer myself I've often thrown any old thing up to fill a gap and fix it later - plus the average Joe Visitor is unlikely to ever meet McIntyre so who needs an accurate photo?).

Again though that's more bad scripting that bad acting...

I agree with Shakey.... we need to remember that this is a game... BUT... like any book or movie, we need to be able to follow the plot... and here is where I think the game is failing.
Even if you believe that TLE is being written on the fly, there should be a certain outline that needs to be followed, but we seem to get things out of the blue.
I totally understand the ploy of web ads being used. I even understand having us hanging on every single little piece of video being released on a day to day basis... but I don't get the Apollo Candy storyline... other than it helped ABC promote its new lineup (at least it did here in Dallas). They could have done more with the construction company (Widmore or whatever).
Now there are certain characters that come out of nowhere... that play a pivotal part in the rescued of our fair maiden... and we are supposed to just go with it??? Before you know it, Superman and Wonderwoman will come to Rachel's rescue and put an end to the Hanso Foundation.
I love the game and I love the idea of the game, but I wish things didn't just jump out of nowhere with no real reason. If the Lost show had been written like this, it would probably had been cancelled.

So far, every answer has lead to more questions, this is true in both the ARG and the show. That is what keeps them both interesting... you get the feeling of AHHH... I see, then the questions WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHY, HOW?.. it is what keeps this a game and keeps us involved...

9/11/2006 09:42:00 AM

Illicit and/or explicit, both would be fine. I don't care if Rachel gets with 70's beardy Hanso, or 90's fat with sequins Hanso, just as long as they get it on. I don't think Rachel will end up with Malik, I thought she was going to drive off into "the blue" with GidgetGirl but she indulged in autoeroticism with Hugh McInTyre. That leaves only 2 things I want to see in this game. RB with Hanso. And mittlewerk in a ball gag/harness/saddle combo.

Well, there is still this Gary Troup stuff that still has not been hashed out yet. Also, the last 2 parts of the interview are still MIA. When and how important will this be to the storyline. Maybe that's ABC's way to tie this game in the show since in the LOST worl, Gary troup was on that flight and Cindy was captured by the others...

I really want to know, but we'll see.

I disagree - nothing has come out of the blue. Apollo Candy has been established in the Lost universe since Kate had an on-screen orgasm eating that candy bar and we've known about somebody pro-Rachel inside THF since Malik told us before HE.com was launched.

Could De Zyla/Da Silva be this inside man? That's intruiging.

How/why is Rachel using Apollo Candy to get her message out? That's also intruiging.

It's not that we can't follow the plot of this game, the plot is complex with many threads established seemingly independant of each other and coming together slowly.

Just like the show, everything here has a reason. Just because that reason isn't handed to us within 5 minutes of it cropping up doesn't mean there's no point.

I'm saving my bitching about loose ends and contradictory threads when we see how it all pans out.

The Lozt Boyz are sharp, and I have also wondered if they have a plan that abc doesn't know about, to terminate Lost as they originally planned, at the 5th season end.

The trick is to end at 5th season, without destroying ties to abc. Abrams and Lindelof may be the Lost brains, but I keep seeing Cuse's diplomat side...he seems to be the "Lindelof reins". No inside information here, just listening closely and speculating.....

I think the struggle is balancing a storyline with interactivity AND fill a six month timeframe.

The story is interesting...evil madman out to save/destroy the world and the only person who stands in his way is a smart spunky young woman who has a personal reason for shining the light on the plot.

The interactivity for the most part has been remarkable...we've made phone calls to THF, followed codes and hacks on their website, stayed up til all hours listening to DJ Dan, had Rachel appear at ComicCon and met some fellow likeminded folks at the candy bar giveaways (which i really believe exists only for that reason).

I think it may have been a bit ambitious to try and fill up months and months of time with the ARG and hence the longer-than-we'd like glyph hunt. Though the de Zylva reveal was a bit abrupt.

I really like the Rachel videos and hope we get a few more. "Knowing" the person who's responsible for all this makes the game much more enjoyable and gives us someone to root for. Otherwise, it's just a series of puzzles.

ratmanislost...i think the term that best describes your dilemma is deus ex machina. and i agree.

They've never done anything like this before, and either due to their ego or their budget they've decided to just wing it. Despite the continuity errors and blatant mistakes we've seen so far, I still think they're doing a great job, and have done exactly what they were setting out to do: attract a larger audience for LOST and give current LOST fans some nice little treats about the show.

Yes, the game has been executed poorly in some instances, but we're still learning alot about the LOST mythology (whether some people agree or not.. I mean, we know the meaning and or intent behind The Numbers and The Island, what more could we ask for?!), and having a good time in the process. I think if we look past the faults and the bugs, TLE is still a great thing to be a part of.

It seems to me that as The Game progresses the line between the LOST show's reality and TLE's reality is becoming intentionally blurred. Despite what everyone says, I believe that they were both supposed to be one and the same, and after forgetting to tell Jimmy Kimmel not to mention LOST, TPTB have had to try and adapt the new concept into the game.. If Jimmy Kimmel hadn't asked Hugh about the show, I honestly feel The Game and LOST would have begun to merge at some point in the next phases of TLE. Perhaps Alvar (played by Ian Patrick Williams) would have appeared in the show, along with the orientation video, or we may have discovered further connections between the characters of the show and the characters of The Game (Gary Troup, Mittelwerk, the deGroots, the Widmores, etc).

But, so far, this is the only big error i've noticed on the parts of TPTB. It's definately a major one, yeah, but i've got alot of respect for the fact that they're totally inexperienced at this and have still managed to keep us watching and frantically searching for clues. That, in itself, is a success. :)

I agree, I think the whole Jimmy Kimmel thing was not as planned. The question was not scripted and threw everything into a spin.

In my view when we play the game we are in the Lost Universe and Lost as a TV show does not exist. Clearly that is not the case as Rachel turned up at Comicon.

Therefore in my mind there is a show in the Lost Universe called Lost that features Hanso / Dharma etc but it is not the show we watch in our universe.

To consider that there were a bunch of people on an island whose actions were being mapped perfectly by a TV show would be silly. There is therefore the Lost we watch in the 'real' world with Kate, Hurley et al and another Lost in the Lostiverse with another plot - the only similarity being the inclusion of Hanso etc.

Thinbluemine - If I were TVM - I would use Hanso to discredit Rachel. Claim that her video is edited and then edit hers with extra footage to show a completely different story. You could even claim that the the Orientation Video was part of an ARG that Hanso was operating with it's partner Verizon on behalf of ABC!

Another question, now that Rachel has gotten the entire video out and we've all seen it, does she consider her job done? After all, now she and Malik are exchanging emails about setting up a meeting with a mystery man.

And finally, what are WE supposed to do? We know the truth, but that can't possibly be enough to stop Mittlewerk. Do I write my congressman? Go on Oprah? We need to know just how TMW is going to distribute this virus (and it better not be via Apollo bars!)

I like that darkangel. The essence of good storytelling is conflict and to keep throwing obstacles at your protaganist.

Remember the emails we got from Rachel directing us to Apollo? Maybe Mittlewerk hacked HER and sent us their using her email address. It is his way of both getting the virus out AND ending the threat of Rachel's supporters doing something about it...by killing us. Or at least 30% of us.

It's a tricky one - Hanso provided a strong response to the publication of Bad Twin. However if they respond to quickly too Rachel's video they give it credibility. I guess what they really need to do it wait until the story breaks and then respond with their story and 'real' video.

It wouldn't be difficult to paint a picture of us as a bunch of wierd internet cospiracists and as for DJ Dan - whose going to take him seriously.

And having a weird windowed hatch show up in the ground of a tropical island ISN'T silly??

But that hatch has brought us the joys of 2 seasons of LOST and this game. And now, 2 years later the hatch has been explained.

The point is that granted, Apollo Candy has come out of the blue and has left us with the burning question you have just asked: how does Rachel get her WIA.com codes on a Hanso product?

The video has put the word out there, but what do we do with this info? Fasten: You had a great thought, Ophrah needs to get involved! LOL

I do expect that THF will begin a counter-campaign (probably some more of those commercials) and continue to tout how great their programs are and try to discredit Rachel and her video somehow.

The Apollo Candy thing is still very strange to me. Why is a Hanso subsidiary helping and what really is the point of the candy bars? Rachel still has some explaining to do!

lurker here throwing in 2 cents...
..i just thought that last rachel explanation was a little bit weak.
Giving us an action packed story about being chased through tunnels by Mittelwerk and his hired goons, with the super fast introduction/elimination (well possibly) of a new faceless character who we don't really care for.
There should have definately at least been the gunshot moment included at the end of the clips. Then maybe a scratchy one of her & De Zilva hiding in a tunnel or running, trying to get the camera to work again, leaving their dying words in case they get caught... would have been cool no? Would have still left the sri lanka video on a cliffhanger.
It just seems like a bit of a cop-out, clearing up the whole issue of her escape with a short bit of writing. Considering it would be the most exciting/suspenseful real world event to occur in the ARG to date, its a pity there's no video or anything to accompany it.

What i would like to see happen in this game is much more input from the 'dark' side if you will - the hanso group.
Something that has bothered me up to this point is that there has been no counter measures in the online following by the hanso people. They surely are aware of the online movement against them, why is there no hacking back or online damage control attempts by them? eg. getting their hands on all the hansoexposed log in email addresses (as in us..) and sending out their spin/explanations to make the whole battle more two sided and juice up the "who are the good guys really?" debate.

For this last rachel explanation, it would have been more captivating & believable if say we had Mittelwerks hired web nerds posting (blogging? news website? or emailing out hanso headline exclusives) about a break in by a naughty young trouble maker and attempts on the lives of staff while they were peacefully having a little work get-together.
Could include security camera stills or something...
Theoretically, A company with pockets as deep as theirs would be doing much much more to discredit the claims of evilness, but all they have so far is an ad in the paper (anti bad twin book) and the jimmy kimmel interview thing.
It needs to be online, that is where this battle is being fought. The Hansofoundation website needs to be back up and slamming rachel and her sheep-like followers. (that would be us) If not that then something, and in real time as rachel is poking around. (a hanso 'don't eat that rachel chocolate' warning announcement anyone?) If we don't hear from her for a while, we instead hear from them about being recklessly shot at and successfully chasing away the pesky spies.
I would also like to see the hanso group redirect their expendible savants to hacking rachel's one sided online parade. Fight back hanso dammit!! Give up trying to physically track her down and manhandle her, she has a hidden posse of dudes lurking with guns that have her back, and they show up conveniently at the last second whenever mittelwerk's mits get close.

To sum up: lets hear from them, & get their side of the events. It would provide for a much broader visualisation of what is occuring, especially in instances such as this current one, and fuel the good guy/bad guy speculations. Would also be humourous to get their spin as they would undoubtedly paint themselves in a highly favourable light.

I have to agree about the strange lack of any response from THF.org. Considering that they took out *full page ads* in *several major newspapers* to slam the publishers of "Bad Twin" -- which really, when you read it, has very little to say (bad or otherwise) about THF -- their current silence is bizarre.

The ROT guys are a good example of what I meant. That is obviously a vehicle for Verizon to promote its wares... that makes some sort of sense... Apollo Candy only exists for the purpose of the game (and the show as we have seen on snippit of a character on the show eating a bar). What's next, the web site for the shampoo they used in the shower???
Also, don't call the door in the sand silly. That was brilliant! It totally made the first season. It actually reminded me of old shows like the Avengers and The Prisoner. Plus, obviously, the door was part of the plot... it did not appear mysteriously like a portal to the next dimension. There was a purpose to the door and to most things in lost. I just don't see the game doing the same thing. Rachel seems to be able to skip all over the world and escape dramatically in the final scene.

You're losing the point I'm trying to make.

The hatch has ULTIMATELY made sense and learning about it over the past 2 years has been gripping.

But when it first showed up I thought "what the hell? There's a bloody window in the dirt!" It made no sense throughout the rest of season 1.

Apollo Candy is the same. When it was first mentioned I thought it was nice to have some tie-ins with the show. I was not expecting it to be part of the game in this way.

And as soon as the site was launched with "Hanso Group" proudly splashed at the bottom, and the Dr. Hackett stuff coming out (which in its own right never got a mention for a long time after mel0drama brought it up waaaaay back when) I thought "what??? how is Rachel distributing this through a Hanso company???".

There is a point to it, ratmanislost, and just like the hatch it will be explained in time. The TV show doesn't drop answers into our laps within 5 seconds of asking the question, so why should this game?

The big news media distributes info to us. Big Media can be swayed. Rachel bypassed the media, and sent the info directly to us to insure big media didn't interfere.

But Mittlewerk is no dummy, and he is convinced his original extermination plan must succeed to "save the world".

What next, a counter media blitz by Mittlewerk, OR does he say "To Hell" with the public opinion, we take the data that we have already accumulated, and proceed to "save the world" as planned, without the test phase???

FREE Apollo bars for the whole world?? LOL

Am I the only one that doesn't even see harm in what we just sawe in the video? Rachel makes Mittlework and Hanso seem like monsters, but in the end all they're trying to accomplish is averting the destruction of the human race. I don't know what killing some people in some villages has to do with it, but I also don't know what a four-toed foot, a giant smoke cloud, and a giant polar bear have to do with it either. It seems they're sacrificing a few for the needs of the many. So...what the hell is going on? Right now...I think Rachel's crazy...

And I was talking about it with some friends...this game can't tie into the show. They are portraying the game as real, the show as fake, so whatever the numbers/equation mean in "real life", they don't have the same relevence in the show because the show is supposed to be fictional...or so you'd think. You see, they're muddling up everything by making this game. What's real, what's not? Are we supposing that these people really did crash on an island, and if we suspend our disbelief then this show is reality TV? If in real life the DHARMA initiative was trying to save the world, then what do all the things on the island have to do with this? (I just realized something, the "virus" on the island was just a ruse to steal babies...anyways).

They really just need to get their story straight. Everyone says: "what happened to all the strange apparations, and the polar bears? why the hell aren't they answering our quesitons?" Well, it appears we're being fed the same meal in this game. Rachel keeps hinting to little misdemeanors committed by corporate leaders, and many sorts of things that corporations tend to do, but she doesn't really extrapolate. I don't see how this whole "missing organs" thing relates at all to the true story here. Honestly, I don't really understand what Mittlewerk is doing. All we know is he's poisoning people for some reason...

And is anyone else disappointed in the answers they are giving us? The whole thing at the end of the second season just ruined all the mysticism for me, and now this thing with the numbers is doing the same. This little "Hanso island video" hasn't revealed anything new. I got that the numbers were related to Valenzetti, so the numbers probably have to do with the end of the world and the factors leading to it. Is there something more? What does each number represent? Why did Hurley win the lottery when he used them? Why are all these people on the island?! Why would the numbers be on the hatch, or be the code for the timer if they are simply a piece of an equation?! The placement of these numbers seems more like a fluke or joke than anything that has meaning.

This is just to confusing...and I wouldn't be surprised if none of it made sense in the end.

-Mr. Tom

I think the appearance of the numbers in so many other places is sheer coincidence. I liken it to (appropriate analogy given what today is) the way people started finding 9 and 11 in things associated with the events of 9/11--9+1+1 = 11 (OMG!), the twin towers look like the number 11!, "The Pentagon" has 11 letters!, etc. When you're looking for coincidences, you find more meaning in them than there really is...

srsizzy, I think what we'll find out after TLE is over is that Jimmy Kimmel wasn't really briefed on the ARG before he interviewed an actor playing Hugh McIntyre, or at least they forgot to tell him some important things, such as "DON'T MENTION LOST!". Therefore he says to Hugh "So what about LOST?", which completely throws everything out of sink, no matter what Hugh answers. The fact that Jimmy Kimmel even mentions the show is proof that the show exists, automatically putting TLE and LOST in different 'universes'.

I strongly believe that if Jimmy Kimmel hadn't asked that then the game would have developed to be in the same 'universe' as the show, and they may have even merged in some minor ways, such as certain supporting characters from the show (the Widmores, Mariv Candle, etc) appearing in the ARG, and characters from the ARG (Alvar Hanso, Mittelwerk, etc) appearing to some extent in the show.

If this isn't the case then why on earth would TPTB say that TLE will give us info into the show? If the show is just a show in the universe of the ARG, then nothing we learn in the ARG will relate to the show because the show isn't real.

Matt the Pale's theory is that we'll find out that the writers of LOST, in the ARG universe, are somehow working or being manipulated by Hanso, however I don't think this will be the case, it just doesn't fit. I do think though that the distinction between LOST and TLE was a mistake, and that TPTB are going to hope we just forget about it as the situation in the ARG develops. They tried to run with it by having Rachel appear at ComicCon, but I think they realised it was a bad mistake, and have since tried to direct the game back on it's original course.

So anyway, I think we're still supposed to believe that LOST isn't a tv show in the ARG universe. If you think of it like that, everything makes sense. :)

Re: the Numbers.
I'd say that most of the occurances of The Numbers are just put in there for fun, with the following exceptions (the ones that really matter in Lost):
1. The code that must be input
2. Hurley's winning numbers

That's pretty much it. So we are left with the fact that for some reason the factors of the Valenzetti Equation somehow made it to Hurley and he won the lottery and subsequently had the worst luck ever, culminating in his crashing on an island (that just happens to have a hatch with those same numbers inscribed on it). I don't think we'll get to the meaning of the Numbers until the last season since they seem to be central to the mythology of the show (fate v. coincidence; faith v. science).

Again, no. The golden oracles make perfect sense. The oracles are a clever device to ensure that Rachel has as big an audience as possible waiting for when she reveals the WIA.com information.

Rachel's said she's waiting until enough golden oracles have been found, which has sent everybody off in a mad rush to get their free choccy. And with the world off to get their free choccy, the overall number of people watching WIA.com goes up, all waiting for that Golden Oracle counter to hit 100%.

She is not a global media corporation so she can't just click her fingers and get global coverage on the news.

Lost is a tv show in both TLE world and in the real world.

And in both "worlds" it's a work of fiction. Only in TLE world, some of the fiction is based on factual information.

That is how the writers keep readers coming back, give you some basis to think - hey this could be true. It is the blatent fiction that has no basis of fact behind it that turns many people away from the story because they can not believe in it.

In this case, the writers are using the ARG to bring facts into the fiction of the show. And those "facts" are what keeps the game "real". IMHO.

Grats dixxee :)

I think that the original intention of the TPTB was for the ARG to be in the same 'universe' as LOST. In other words, in the 'universe' of the ARG, LOST the TV show doesn't exist, and the events that happened there (or are happening) either really happened or are happening.

If not then we're supposed to believe that the events in the ARG are real and LOST is just a TV show, however in the ARG there was an Oceanic Flight 815 that crashed on September 22, 2004, the same day that the first episode of LOST aired (which was also set on Sep 22, 2004), in which we saw Oceanic Flight 815 crash!

If LOST, in the 'universe' of the ARG, is just a tv show, then how could the writers know aout the crash of this plane before it happened!?

Yet back in the good ole U S of A, the the stuff apparently already uploaded somewhere she had to split it all into fragments incase they caught her? Yeah....

I think Rachel needs to explain what the deal with that is.

I have to agree with vexing's take on the show universe and arg universe. i took twm's kimmel comments as a "oh, that's a silly work of fiction defaming us, pay no attention." which i assumed meant it was striking a little to close to true for his comfort. so in essence, in the arg universe, someone with knowledge of the history of thf and the island is making a tv show to document what occurred there. that's my take on it anyway.

9/11/2006 12:27:00 PM
Blogger PeaceAndNamaste said...

Perhaps Mittelwerk kept it a secret that somebody had filmed that briefing, so that nobody higher up could stop him from continuing with his plan?

Rachel might have split it up so that Mittelwerk's bosses didn't find out and try and stop her from releasing it by capturing her..

Meh, I dunno, just trying to make sense of it.. :)

Edit: Oxillini, then please explain to me how the writers of LOST knew that Oceanic Flight 815 was going to crash on September 22, 2004, in order for them to film the whole scene in advance of that date and then air it on September 22, 2004. That's the main logic behind my belief that the Jimmy Kimmel/Hugh McIntyre was a mistake that that LOST and the ARG were intended to coexist in the same universe..

vexing, I think it was less a continuity error on behalf of TPTB and more of an error on behalf of Jimmy Kimmel or whoever briefed him about the interview with Hugh McIntyre. Kimmel didn't know that he wasn't supposed to mention LOST, and so he did. If he hadn't then we wouldn't be asking any of these questions because everything would work..

I really wish they hadn't attempted to address the issue on Kimmel... or at Comic-Con... or if they did, it should have been much better planned out. They know we're going to rip apart anything and everything they say, they should plan on it every time... continuity errors suck...

Do we have anything dated that shows these things didn't happen prior to the plane crash. I think their first plan was to give us "background" information about the show. Feel better, Scout!

It's been a while since I've been on. Good discussion. Nice to get some answers. Now we need to update the unanswered questions board *again*!

As far as Lost TV and TLE goes:

The casting call for the Rachel character included a personal appearance, which leads me to believe that they always intented for it to be as vexingmodstwo said:

Lost is a tv show in both TLE world and in the real world.

And in both "worlds" it's a work of fiction. Only in TLE world, some of the fiction is based on factual information.

--

My addition would as, Doc Jensen and Rachel in their interview, hinted, how is THF (which must have released the info upon which the Lost TV show is based and funded commercials to air during it) profitting from the show? What nefarious purpose does it serve for them?

And since the Lost TV show actors then appeared with Rachel's glyph wrist bands on, the TV show people have either turned against THF, their benefactor, or the whole thing was a really horrible incongruity.

9/11/2006 01:03:00 PM
Blogger Shakey said...

This is a bit of a fudge on our parts but if you suspend disbelief and make the following assumption everything shuld work out fine:

LOST exists in both our universe and the ARG universe, only the ARG version doesn't start on September 22nd...

Personally the Jimmy Kimmel mess-up was so long ago I don't think it matters any more. It certainly hasn't affected my enjoyment of the game.

9/11/2006 01:04:00 PM
Blogger thinbluemime said...

we know that the Rachel events happen in our "real" time, she was at comic con, and etc.
we know the date of the flight 815 crash, in our real time
we DO NOT know the time frame on the island in relationship to our real time.
IF the island is moved backwards in time, in relationship to us, then the TV show could be a dramatic reenactment of past events, being aired in our real time.

For what it is worth, I dont believe though the time shift is different that much :(

shakey, i'd say it's more realistic that the appearance of Rachel at ComicCon was an attempt at damage control by TPTB. They thought that since Kimmel had messed up they better try and make it look like it was intentional.

It just won't fit that LOST is a show in the ARG universe. If you realise that Kimmel just made a mistake, then everything else fits perfectly.

I don't understand why everyone will take a huge leap of faith and say that either the LOST in our universe and in the ARG are different, or that there's some time distortion going on, or that LOST is actually made by Hanso... But nobody will believe me that Jimmy Kimmel just made a mistake and so TPTB just had to try and run with it... It makes soooo much more sense! Not only that but it doesn't make any sense for TPTB to create a game based on their TV show that supposedly gives LOST fans insight into the history/mythology of the show, and then seperate them in this way?

It's my story and i'm sticking to it.. :P And i'm pretty certain that after TLe is over TPT will admit that it was a mistake on Kimmel's part or whoever briefed him on TLE and the interview.

Hi Guys

Back briefly - must do ironing and dinner etc

I have to agree that the whole Jimmy Kimmel thing was a complete screw up and there should ahve been no mention of Lost - however I imagine Jimmy Kimmel did not want to alienate those viewers who had not seen Lost and were unaware who Hanso were.

As I have said before, whilst it seems there is a TV Show in the ARG universe that is called Lost, has HANSO mentioned in it and has some of the same actors beyond that it may bear no relation to the real lost - no plane crash (maybe there was a shipwreck, or they're lost in the outback or the Canadian Wilderness etc).

To be honest, most of the time I ignore this bit of the game

anyway

I really must go

Namaste

Hey everyone. Just wondering if I'm going to be the only person still going to the Chicago event (or non-event as the case may turn out to be) tommorow? I'm still headed there . . . if you are too (n.i.k., k.barrick. wendyzski, ox) let me know!

I'll be there!
