Clue #136 - Other Girl Special

The Other Girl posted with a message about a cryptic email she recieved filled with numbers. Decode the numbers (using this website) and you'll find that it's Rachel's quick reply to Malik. Her message answers some important questions we've been asking. She says...

"I knew you were behind that. I just knew. He never told me, you know?

When I hit the ground I was sure I was dead. The camera was broken, they were dragging me to my feet... and then a burst of gunfire in the air. These were SCIENTISTS, unarmed. They hit the ground. But not Mittelwerk. He kept coming until de Zylva turned the shots in his direction. Once Mittelwerk was face down on the ground, de Zylva grabbed my hand and we were gone. With the camera.

He didn't talk. He said he was de Zylva, that was it. We knew Mittelwerk was already in pursuit, but we stuck to tunnels that had been dug out during various wartimes. We had some close calls. The goal was the American embassy in Colombo, but when we got there, we knew that was impossible. It was being watched -- the airport, too. de Zylva said The Hanso Foundation had too much influence in Colombo to take the risk.

And, then, they caught wind of us again. We knew we could be caught at any second, and the only important thing was that video. EVIDENCE of Mittelwerk's world-wide decimation plot. I'd planned for this. All I needed was a secure, high-speed connection. The Hanso goons knew it too. They surrounded the place while I was uploading. We barricaded ourselves, de Zylva knew an escape route. I barely got out, made my way to a friend of de Zylva's who could get me to India. I swear, I waited for de Zylva. But he never came.

I'm so sorry."

Thanks to jonnygasman & Matt the Pale for emailing us about this clue!

Maybe it is intentional (I doubt it but maybe) and her stupidity will make it all the more credible when we find that she's being used by Alvar, or TVM or Joop or whoever.

I think the problem may be as much with the budget for the TLEC and the acting talent(or lack therof) of the actress playing Rachel.

I also wonder who is doing the writing - Whilst Cuse, Javi et all might have written the outlain I imagine they have used some junior ABC screenwriter to do some of the script.

I'm sure Rachel's not meant to be stupid, I think the problem is that up against the skill of TLEC most people would appear a little slow ;)

The Lozt Boyz are sharp, and I have also wondered if they have a plan that abc doesn't know about, to terminate Lost as they originally planned, at the 5th season end.

The trick is to end at 5th season, without destroying ties to abc. Abrams and Lindelof may be the Lost brains, but I keep seeing Cuse's diplomat side...he seems to be the "Lindelof reins". No inside information here, just listening closely and speculating.....

I think the struggle is balancing a storyline with interactivity AND fill a six month timeframe.

The story is interesting...evil madman out to save/destroy the world and the only person who stands in his way is a smart spunky young woman who has a personal reason for shining the light on the plot.

The interactivity for the most part has been remarkable...we've made phone calls to THF, followed codes and hacks on their website, stayed up til all hours listening to DJ Dan, had Rachel appear at ComicCon and met some fellow likeminded folks at the candy bar giveaways (which i really believe exists only for that reason).

I think it may have been a bit ambitious to try and fill up months and months of time with the ARG and hence the longer-than-we'd like glyph hunt. Though the de Zylva reveal was a bit abrupt.

I really like the Rachel videos and hope we get a few more. "Knowing" the person who's responsible for all this makes the game much more enjoyable and gives us someone to root for. Otherwise, it's just a series of puzzles.

ratmanislost...i think the term that best describes your dilemma is deus ex machina. and i agree.

I agree, I think the whole Jimmy Kimmel thing was not as planned. The question was not scripted and threw everything into a spin.

In my view when we play the game we are in the Lost Universe and Lost as a TV show does not exist. Clearly that is not the case as Rachel turned up at Comicon.

Therefore in my mind there is a show in the Lost Universe called Lost that features Hanso / Dharma etc but it is not the show we watch in our universe.

To consider that there were a bunch of people on an island whose actions were being mapped perfectly by a TV show would be silly. There is therefore the Lost we watch in the 'real' world with Kate, Hurley et al and another Lost in the Lostiverse with another plot - the only similarity being the inclusion of Hanso etc.

Thinbluemine - If I were TVM - I would use Hanso to discredit Rachel. Claim that her video is edited and then edit hers with extra footage to show a completely different story. You could even claim that the the Orientation Video was part of an ARG that Hanso was operating with it's partner Verizon on behalf of ABC!

9/11/2006 10:19:00 AM
Blogger FYSB said...

Another question, now that Rachel has gotten the entire video out and we've all seen it, does she consider her job done? After all, now she and Malik are exchanging emails about setting up a meeting with a mystery man.

And finally, what are WE supposed to do? We know the truth, but that can't possibly be enough to stop Mittlewerk. Do I write my congressman? Go on Oprah? We need to know just how TMW is going to distribute this virus (and it better not be via Apollo bars!)

9/11/2006 10:22:00 AM
Blogger FYSB said...

I like that darkangel. The essence of good storytelling is conflict and to keep throwing obstacles at your protaganist.

Remember the emails we got from Rachel directing us to Apollo? Maybe Mittlewerk hacked HER and sent us their using her email address. It is his way of both getting the virus out AND ending the threat of Rachel's supporters doing something about it...by killing us. Or at least 30% of us.

9/11/2006 10:25:00 AM
Blogger Chris Procter said...

I though I might send THF a threatening email - we know what your doing sort of thing and see what response I got.

If you don't hear from me again, then you know TVM and his cronies have paid me a visit and it would probably be best to try a different tactic.

9/11/2006 10:25:00 AM
Blogger RyaNDrumZ said...

Dark Angel, good call. TVM would need to discredit this video and that would be the way to do it. Her video does have some missing pieces...You never know. We might see another TVM commercial or something to show THF is not a bad company...
I just can't wait to see what happens today...

9/11/2006 10:28:00 AM
Blogger Chris Procter said...

It's a tricky one - Hanso provided a strong response to the publication of Bad Twin. However if they respond to quickly too Rachel's video they give it credibility. I guess what they really need to do it wait until the story breaks and then respond with their story and 'real' video.

It wouldn't be difficult to paint a picture of us as a bunch of wierd internet cospiracists and as for DJ Dan - whose going to take him seriously.

Great discussion everyone: Still...the big question remains as to what WE are supposed to do now? We cannot physically stop TWM and his gang from completing their agenda. The video has put the word out there, but what do we do with this info? Fasten: You had a great thought, Ophrah needs to get involved! LOL

I do expect that THF will begin a counter-campaign (probably some more of those commercials) and continue to tout how great their programs are and try to discredit Rachel and her video somehow.

The Apollo Candy thing is still very strange to me. Why is a Hanso subsidiary helping and what really is the point of the candy bars? Rachel still has some explaining to do!

The big news media distributes info to us. Big Media can be swayed. Rachel bypassed the media, and sent the info directly to us to insure big media didn't interfere.

But Mittlewerk is no dummy, and he is convinced his original extermination plan must succeed to "save the world".

What next, a counter media blitz by Mittlewerk, OR does he say "To Hell" with the public opinion, we take the data that we have already accumulated, and proceed to "save the world" as planned, without the test phase???

Am I the only one that doesn't even see harm in what we just sawe in the video? Rachel makes Mittlework and Hanso seem like monsters, but in the end all they're trying to accomplish is averting the destruction of the human race. I don't know what killing some people in some villages has to do with it, but I also don't know what a four-toed foot, a giant smoke cloud, and a giant polar bear have to do with it either. It seems they're sacrificing a few for the needs of the many. So...what the hell is going on? Right now...I think Rachel's crazy...

And I was talking about it with some friends...this game can't tie into the show. They are portraying the game as real, the show as fake, so whatever the numbers/equation mean in "real life", they don't have the same relevence in the show because the show is supposed to be fictional...or so you'd think. You see, they're muddling up everything by making this game. What's real, what's not? Are we supposing that these people really did crash on an island, and if we suspend our disbelief then this show is reality TV? If in real life the DHARMA initiative was trying to save the world, then what do all the things on the island have to do with this? (I just realized something, the "virus" on the island was just a ruse to steal babies...anyways).

They really just need to get their story straight. Everyone says: "what happened to all the strange apparations, and the polar bears? why the hell aren't they answering our quesitons?" Well, it appears we're being fed the same meal in this game. Rachel keeps hinting to little misdemeanors committed by corporate leaders, and many sorts of things that corporations tend to do, but she doesn't really extrapolate. I don't see how this whole "missing organs" thing relates at all to the true story here. Honestly, I don't really understand what Mittlewerk is doing. All we know is he's poisoning people for some reason...

And is anyone else disappointed in the answers they are giving us? The whole thing at the end of the second season just ruined all the mysticism for me, and now this thing with the numbers is doing the same. This little "Hanso island video" hasn't revealed anything new. I got that the numbers were related to Valenzetti, so the numbers probably have to do with the end of the world and the factors leading to it. Is there something more? What does each number represent? Why did Hurley win the lottery when he used them? Why are all these people on the island?! Why would the numbers be on the hatch, or be the code for the timer if they are simply a piece of an equation?! The placement of these numbers seems more like a fluke or joke than anything that has meaning.

This is just to confusing...and I wouldn't be surprised if none of it made sense in the end.

-Mr. Tom

I think the appearance of the numbers in so many other places is sheer coincidence. I liken it to (appropriate analogy given what today is) the way people started finding 9 and 11 in things associated with the events of 9/11--9+1+1 = 11 (OMG!), the twin towers look like the number 11!, "The Pentagon" has 11 letters!, etc. When you're looking for coincidences, you find more meaning in them than there really is...

Doesn't most fiction have some basis of fact that brings the story closer to reality and makes it more believable? That is how the writers keep readers coming back, give you some basis to think - hey this could be true. It is the blatent fiction that has no basis of fact behind it that turns many people away from the story because they can not believe in it.

In this case, the writers are using the ARG to bring facts into the fiction of the show. And those "facts" are what keeps the game "real". IMHO.

Luckily he is on the White (2nd string) team.. the Red (1st string) team is losing, where the White team only plays what is called the 5th quarter, and they are winning more than losing.

Yet back in the good ole U S of A, the the stuff apparently already uploaded somewhere she had to split it all into fragments incase they caught her? Yeah....

I think Rachel needs to explain what the deal with that is.

I have to agree with vexing's take on the show universe and arg universe. i took twm's kimmel comments as a "oh, that's a silly work of fiction defaming us, pay no attention." which i assumed meant it was striking a little to close to true for his comfort. so in essence, in the arg universe, someone with knowledge of the history of thf and the island is making a tv show to document what occurred there. that's my take on it anyway.

It's been a while since I've been on. Good discussion. Nice to get some answers. Now we need to update the unanswered questions board *again*!

As far as Lost TV and TLE goes:

The casting call for the Rachel character included a personal appearance, which leads me to believe that they always intented for it to be as vexingmodstwo said:

Lost is a tv show in both TLE world and in the real world.

And in both "worlds" it's a work of fiction. Only in TLE world, some of the fiction is based on factual information.

--

My addition would as, Doc Jensen and Rachel in their interview, hinted, how is THF (which must have released the info upon which the Lost TV show is based and funded commercials to air during it) profitting from the show? What nefarious purpose does it serve for them?

And since the Lost TV show actors then appeared with Rachel's glyph wrist bands on, the TV show people have either turned against THF, their benefactor, or the whole thing was a really horrible incongruity.

Blogger thinbluemime said...

we know that the Rachel events happen in our "real" time, she was at comic con, and etc.
we know the date of the flight 815 crash, in our real time
we DO NOT know the time frame on the island in relationship to our real time.
IF the island is moved backwards in time, in relationship to us, then the TV show could be a dramatic reenactment of past events, being aired in our real time.

For what it is worth, I dont believe though the time shift is different that much :(

You had to wait until after the previews to get the bars? We got our bars BEFORE the they showed the previews.

Yes, Dennis, we endured both previews as well as lengthy banter by the local ABC newspeople. It was not for the weak.

Stay away from the nanites, brutha. You may wake up one day in the back of a Jeep Compass, smelling of Sprite and covered in orangatan hairs and having no idea how you got there until Rachel releases THAT video.

Dennis - I have not seen The Devil Wears Prada, so I can not comment on that. Either way, neither of the shows was LOST. They were both sitcoms and this was ABC's only true way to promote the shows. I don't think either show will last long.

Hi Guys

Back briefly - must do ironing and dinner etc

I have to agree that the whole Jimmy Kimmel thing was a complete screw up and there should ahve been no mention of Lost - however I imagine Jimmy Kimmel did not want to alienate those viewers who had not seen Lost and were unaware who Hanso were.

As I have said before, whilst it seems there is a TV Show in the ARG universe that is called Lost, has HANSO mentioned in it and has some of the same actors beyond that it may bear no relation to the real lost - no plane crash (maybe there was a shipwreck, or they're lost in the outback or the Canadian Wilderness etc).

To be honest, most of the time I ignore this bit of the game

anyway

I really must go

Namaste

Unfortunately, by moving it to Friday, a lot of working people will have a problem.

Re the time problems with the ARG vs LOST: I always had an issue with the 2004/2006 times difference. I guess we have to go with the flow that time is not what it seems on the island (per the producers at ComicCon), and somehow a major "catchup" will occur in S3.

That's doable, thinbluemime, but it certainly takes out the interactivity with the other players. Part of what made the middle of the night broadcast more of a "must attend" event was the fact that we were all online together and hanging out in chat and listening to our TLEC friends call in.

Point taken thinbluemime. It's not a middle of the night issue for me, it's a work issue. I was one of those up at 1am for the last one and will likely do that again if DJ Dan deems it so...as long as it's not during a work week night.

This is going to be tough for them to solve...by the time you avoid the holy day for all the time zones, you've eliminated a big chunk of time.

***Season2 Spoiler Question***

Since in the last ep Penny still had a picture of Des and her on the nightstand, I guess we can assume that in the 2-3 years that Des was in the hatch, that she never married that other guy? Sorry if this was obvious to everyone 100 years ago, but it just kind of dawned on me today. I also wonder if there has been big-time trouble between her and Daddy Warbucks since she saw Des in the stadium, and may have found out (in dialogue off-screen as we are supposed to assume happens on the island as well) that Dad intercepted all of Desmond's letters to her. Guess we'll see.

*****Spoiler Off*****

P.S. I really hope that TPTB can bring someone like Scully into the show who is a scientist that can explain some, or a lot, of the technical things that they have been and are introducing. They have got so much going on, that at some point I think it will be impossible for them to backtrack enough to explain everything that they have thrown at us and expected us to buy with blind faith, trusting that they'll explain it later. !coughXFilescough! I really enjoy the geeky science aspects, and they have just alluded to SO much, that they really need a Bill Nye guy to crash on the planet to satisfy my curiosity about all the techie-stuff. I'm tired of just guessing about it all!

Regarding the tv show extras"

A good thought/question. Cuse and Lindelof in their podcast have referred to the extras as "socks: or "red-shirts"

CC & DL have said they have used the same "extras" though out Lost thus far.

I know of no red-shirt name list, although at one time I considered assigning them each a number for easy reference.

But I never did, and instead concentrated primarily upon two of them. The best way to describe them is with a picture, although I did name one "Blue Elfin". The following links shows pics of these two, and after closer examination, you may see why I have watched them closly.

The first one is my favorite. He appears in many close up shots, though briefly, but I think of him as the unnamed Lost Star. I kinda devoted a whole blog entry to him:
http://users.newblog.com/thinbluemime/?post_id=3504

The second one I concentrated on, I do not like, he seems "SHADEy" to me. He has to many "finger" in to much. He almost appears "invisible" to the main group of Losties. I don't like him, and I don't know why :)
Here is a pic of him , sitting on the beach

Still I do actually want to see some more Rachel videos. I miss the vidoes. I also miss THF website. I know there is a preserved version around but I miss the site being really active. It's about time they got it up again if you ask me.

Good morning all! Here's what I'm wondering. Malik offered to intro Rachel to "him" (we're assuming that's Alvar) on the Aug 11 podcast. Rachel emailed us on Aug 22 to go to apollocandy and emailed us again on August 24 to go to whereisalvar.

My assumption til now had been that Rachel had met Alvar and had put up the whereisalvar site and the promise of revealing something big had to do with that meeting.

We found out this past weekend that Rachel still hasn't met Alvar.

So I wonder what the big secret is at the end of whereisalvar, when "enough" people know. And when will we see the outcome of Rachel's meeting with Alvar.

Good morning, I'm kinda lost (ha ha) without having to hunt glyphs. Are we suppose to hunt for the cryptic messages now? I had hoped RB would start using one or the other of her blog pages to keep us in the know. oh well...

On another note; I've been watching season 2 on DVD and saw that the Apollo candy that Kate and Hurley eat isn't at all like the bars we've been getting. What they are eating is more of a nouget candy bar like milky way. Anyone else notice that?

TLCM - Yeah.. I noticed that a while back but don't think it matters that much. Probably cheaper to produce the plain chocolate for distribution....

In reality, the bars on the island came in a tin. Not those little brown boxes or plastic grocery bags they were using to distribute them either.

Hello, all.
I tried to post this yesterday, but Blogger ate it.

Random theorizing: six Hanso intitiatives, six VE core factors -- as TWM said in the video, they have been trying to change the core factors by changing the environment. So all the stuff Rachel has been feeding us -- missing organs, antennas off the Korean coast, starting wars, Joop -- are all attempts to avert the end of the world. As with their latest effort in Sri Lanka, they generally ignore the moral implications of what they do, justifying their actions with the end goal of saving the world.

Also: all those computers in the Swan hatch? They were doing the same thing as the savants at Vik -- "running" the Valenzetti Equation. Savants are better at it, though. Finite precision in the computer causes the solution to drift off after a certain number of iterations, so the program has to be re-initialized every so often with the correct values -- about every 108 minutes. The computer errors, unexpected at first, probably led to the "incident".

Hi Engineer

Yes I agree that Hanso are ignoring any moral restraints and are doing what needs to be done. But as TVM says - if you new with absolute certainty that the World was going to end wouldn't you do anything you could to save it. Hey if you fail everyone dies anyway.

As per the computers, I think they may have had losts of uses, if they're running lot of scientific experiments computers are pretty useful (even those old IBM IIs or whatever they were)

Slow day, so I've been looking around. Sounds like we should watch Kimmel's special this Wed. E-online "Watch with Kristin" says:

From lancine: Have you seen Jimmy Kimmel's special? I love him.
Stand in line, be-yotch. I adore Jimmy K.! And yes, the special is this Wednesday on ABC--it's an all-star aalute to himself (genius), and he'll have Ben Stiller and lots of surprise guests. My guess? Alvar Hanso! As you know, Jimmy's a big Lost fan, and when I caught up with him recently, he told me he's vying for a guest spot on the show. "I want to be just like the Globetrotters showing up on Gilligan's Island." His show was also renewed for a fifth season, so we're guaranteed another year of Mr. Smiley randomly appearing in the audience. Yay!

I must say when I first heard the phrase Jumping the Shark I had to look it up on Wikipedia - obviously something that hasn't filtered over to the UK.

Mind you I know some of what we say confuses you guys. A friend of my brother in law was in a bar in Texas and anounced the the shock of his American Friends that he was just going to "pop outside for a quick fag" - In the UK the word fag means cigarette!

Note concerning the Chicago area Apollo give away this evening...

I phoned the Rockit Bar and Grill today and asked them if they had an ABC Promotion this evening. The guy on the phone told me an Acura event was scheduled from 5pm to 9pm. My guess is that they WILL have the Apollo give away there also.

OK here goes...I don't normally comment on theory, but I just had a thought...

CRAZY THEORY TIME

What if the HIM Rachel Blake is talking about is NOT Alvar Hanso, but it is Enzo Valenzetti? It could also be Alvar, but….

What if the big twist is that the Valenzetti equation is a FAKE? Think of the implications...

All of the research that was being done to change the variable isn't working? Why? Because the numbers can't be changed. It is all a scam being perpetrated by Enzo, Alvar, and the UN, to pacify the US and USSR. Alvar sets up this phony foundation to "solve" the equation that he knows can never be solved. The end date is a long way off so they can worry about that later, plus there might be some good that comes out of it.

Fast forward 40+ years, no progress had been made on the equation, and some people who are not in the know, like Mittelwerk, start to worry that something drastic needs to be done. So he starts wars, creates viruses, etc. trying to change the equation...and it still doesn't change the “numbers”. The only two people alive that know the truth are Alvar and Enzo, but Ezno is missing or dead. So Alvar has to go into hiding because he can’t admit to lying all these years, and he is afraid of Mittelwerk and what he is doing.

Maybe Alvar has been trying to track down Ezno since 2001, and that's why he hasn't been seen...

Under this scenario, Rachel Blake still gets to be the good guy. She can stop Mittelwerk AND the world won’t come to an end. Even Mittelwerk gets a little redemption, since he didn’t know the equation was fake. Especially if all those people in Sri Lanka can still be saved. Alvar turns out to be a good guy overall, but a failure by letting things get out of hand.
